Saudi king slams religious extremists as #Muslims mark Ramadan

Riyadh (AFP) - Saudi King Abdullah on Sunday sharply criticised religious extremists, vowing not to let "a handful of terrorists... terrify Muslims", in a speech marking the start of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Islam is "religion of unity, fraternity and mutual support" but some people "lured in by false calls... are confusing reform with terrorism", the monarch said, in comments carried by state news agency SPA.

"Their goal is to sow discord among Muslims," he said in an apparent reference to insurgents from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The powerful jihadist group has spearheaded an offensive by Sunni militants in Iraq since June 9, wresting control of northern cities and capturing vast swathes of territory.

ISIL operates in both Syria and Iraq and aims to establish an Islamic state straddling the border of those two countries, but their lightning advance in Iraq also poses a threat to Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The ultra-conservative Sunni Gulf kingdom -- home to Mecca and Medina, Islam's holiest sites -- shares an 814-kilometre (505-mile) border with Iraq.

"We will not allow a handful of terrorists, using Islam for personal aims, to terrify Muslims or undermine our country and its inhabitants," Abdullah said.

"We are continuing, with God's help, to face and tackle this scourge," he said.

The Saudi monarch also wished Muslims "security, prosperity and stability" over Ramadan, which began in most countries on Sunday.

During Ramadan, which is sacred to Muslims because it is during that month that tradition says the Koran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed, believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn until sunset.
Women are more likely to be physically aggressive towards their partners than men

Women are more likely to be physically aggressive towards their partners than men

Women are more likely to be verbally and physically aggressive towards their partners than men suggests a new study presented as part of a symposium on intimate partner violence (IPV).

The symposium 'Developments in Intimate Partner Violence Research and Practice' is presented today, Wednesday 25 June, at the British Psychological Society's Division of Forensic Psychology annual conference in Glasgow.

Dr Elizabeth Bates from the University of Cumbria and colleagues from the University of Central Lancashire gave a total of 1104 students (706 women and 398 men) questionnaires about their physical aggression and controlling behaviour, to partners and to same-sex others (including friends).

Analysis showed that women were more likely to be physically aggressive to their partners than men and that men were more likely to be physically aggressive to their same-sex others.

Furthermore, women engaged in significantly higher levels of controlling behaviour than men, which significantly predicted physical aggression in both sexes.

Dr Elizabeth Bates explained: "This was an interesting finding. Previous studies have sought to explain male violence towards women as rising from patriarchal values, which motivate men to seek to control women's behaviour, using violence if necessary.

"This study found that women demonstrated a desire to control their partners and were more likely to use physical aggression than men. This suggests that IPV may not be motivated by patriarchal values and needs to be studied within the context of other forms of aggression, which has potential implications for interventions."

Other papers presented in the symposium are as follows:

'Inner Strength Domestic Violence Programme' - Dr Nichola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire & Mid Sweden University)

'Men's experiences of victimisation from a female intimate partner: An international study' - Louise Dixon (University of Birmingham).

'Reasons for engaging in conflict within and outside of relationships: A comparison of women's responses' - Abi Thornton, (University of Bolton), Nichola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire) & J. Archer.

'Literature review: Men's Experience of Domestic Abuse' - Brian Dempsey (University of Dundee).

New Lineup Combines the Best of G Pad 8.3 and G3 for Global Audience

Karachi, June 30, 2014 — Following the unveiling of three new G Pad tablets in May, LG Electronics (LG) today announced the launch of the new tablets, starting with the G Pad 7.0 rolling out in Europe this week, followed by the G Pad 8.0 and G Pad 10.1 over the next several weeks.

The three new G Pad devices offer just the right balance of performance, personality and price to fill the gap between entry and premium tablets. All three tablets will offer a 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor, 1GB RAM and a True IPS HD display (1280 x 800), housed in a stylish and ergonomic body in five different colors — Black, White, Red, Luminous Orange and Luminous Blue. With their rounded edges, the tablets are designed to be held comfortably with one hand.

LG’s smallest tablet, G Pad 7.0, gives users a truly portable entertainment hub that delivers both mobility and power. LG’s mid-sized tablet, G Pad 8.0, offers an immersive multimedia experience and smooth multitasking capabilities. And the G Pad 10.1 boasts an expansive display powered by an 8,000mAh battery that gives users an immersive experience for hours and hours of entertainment wherever, whenever.

“LG understands that people have different needs and we wanted to provide consumers with a range of options in size, looks, and attractive price points that included the best of LG’s core technologies,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With our latest tablets, LG is giving consumers options to find a device that best fits their lifestyle and needs.”

LG continues to make connectivity among LG devices more convenient with the introduction of QPair 2.0 which provides seamless convergence between Android-powered tablets and smartphones via a simple Bluetooth connection. Users can receive notifications of calls and messages on a smartphone and respond directly from the G Pad. To encourage the creation of apps that make optimal use of this integration, the QPair 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) is now available for download from LG Developer website (http://developer.lge.com). With the SDK, developers can create apps that let users stream online media and change settings on the G Pad remotely from any Android smartphone.

Smart Keyboard and Dual Window will be also included in the tablet trio. As a key adaptive technology featured on LG’s latest G3 flagship smartphone, Smart Keyboard reduces input errors by up to 75 percent by tracking and analyzing typing habits and intuitively “knowing” what word the user intended to type. Dual Window can split the screen and run two applications at the same time, making multitasking easier than ever.

'I'm drinking and smoking because my unborn baby is a BOY': Pregnant model

Pregnant model who had boob job on the NHS says she would have had an abortion if she'd known it wasn't a girl

  • Josie Cunningham admits she has been smoking 20 a day while pregnant
  • Says she is not proud of having a cigarette when she discovered baby's sex
  • Also drank a small glass of wine in a bid to overcome her disappointment
  • Considered terminating the pregnancy so she could appear on Big Brother
  • Last week she said she would give up smoking if the taxpayer funded it
  • Also revealed she will be releasing a 'raw' autobiographical book this year
  • Will be unedited, so spelling and grammar mistakes will be left in

A pregnant would-be glamour model who had a breast enlargement on the NHS has admitted she is drinking and smoking because she is expecting a baby boy, not a girl.
Josie Cunningham, 23, said if she knew she was having a son earlier, she would have gone through with the abortion she considered after being asked to appear on Big Brother.
As a result, the mother-of-two has turned to alcohol and cigarettes to get over her disappointment.
The former escort is now smoking 20 a day, even though she knows it will harm the baby.
She has vowed to quit, but has said she needs her GP as well as NHS-funded nicotine patches and counselling to help her kick the habit.
Her comments come days after she was pictured smoking before getting into a taxpayer-funded taxi, a service she uses every day because she developed 'anxiety' issues after angry people confronted her on the bus.
She told the Sunday Mirror: 'The evening I found out the sex of the baby was when I lit up my first cigarette. I’m not proud of it – but I couldn’t stop myself. It changed everything.
'Once I’d finished the cigarette I found it difficult to focus on anything positive, so I had a small glass of wine.
'My intention was to have one, but before I knew it I was on my second and I’d smoked a whole packet of fags.'
Today, Miss Cunningham revealed on Twitter that she will be releasing an autobiography at the end of the year.
Her agent Rob Cooper told Mail Online that the book will be 'Josie's exact words, completely unedited', meaning spelling and grammar mistakes will be included.
Last week it was revealed that Miss Cunningham, and her two children aged six and three, are driven two-and-a-half miles to and from the local school every day in a journey which costs Leeds Council £30 a day.

Miss Cunningham also clashed with Loose Women co-host Myleene Klass during an appearance last Wednesday, suggesting it was wrong that NHS money was used to fund her £4,800 cosmetic surgery.
Before her appearance - which caused a stir on Facebook and Twitter - she tweeted a photo of herself in the changing rooms with the message: 'Not long till I'm on Loose Women... Haters are going to hate regardless.'
The talk show’s presenters began the interview by saying that it was an opportunity to 'explain her side' after continuous negative publicity.

Zarb-i-Azb is war of survival ضرب عضب ملک کے بقاء کی جنگ ہے , says ISPR chief

Zarb-i-Azb is war of survival ضرب عضب ملک کے بقاء کی جنگ ہے , says ISPR chief

ISLAMABAD: The ongoing military operation in North Waziristan is a ‘war of survival’ and will pave the way for the dawn of permanent peace in the country, the military’s spokesperson said on Thursday.

In a formal briefing to the media on Operation Zarb-i-Azb, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asim Bajwa told reporters that the operation was being carried out without any discrimination between “good or bad Taliban”.

“This is the biggest and most well-coordinated operation ever conducted against terrorists. It is the beginning of the end for terrorism in the country,” he said.

Maj Gen Bajwa said army troops, Frontier Corps personnel, Khasadars, Levies, intelligence operatives and the Pakistan Air Force were jointly conducting the operation in North Waziristan.
Maj Gen Asim Bajwa says troops have surrounded North Waziristan; claims terrorists did not know operation was coming

“We have surrounded the entire agency and sealed the 180km border with Afghanistan, as well as the boundary with South Waziristan, making it impossible for terrorists to escape,” he said.

Asked if there was a possibility that terrorist leaders had escaped to Afghanistan before the launch of the operation, the ISPR chief said it was possible a few of them had taken refuge on the Afghan side, but most of them were still in the targeted area. “The terrorists could not anticipate the launch of the operation,” he said.

“Terrorists of all kinds, involved in different activities from Fata to Karachi, are based in North Waziristan. They include local and foreign militants, including Uzbeks and Chechens. Now, it is up to them whether they surrender or fight,” he said.

He said the entire nation and the political leadership of the country were on the same page as the military on the issue of terrorism and fully supported the army in the operation.

Asked about the perception that the military once backed militants groups such as the Haqqani group and Gul Bahadur group, the ISPR spokesman said there was formerly a pact with the Gul Bahadur group, but that had since been violated and now, neither side was bound to honour the agreement.

He said that since the launch of the operation on June 15, a total of 327 terrorists had been killed and 45 of their hideouts had been destroyed.

He said 19 terrorists had surrendered to security personnel but did not reveal any details about their nationality or allegiances. Ten security personnel have laid down their lives, while seven had been injured in the line of duty, he said.

The Afghan government had been requested to take action against those terrorists who crossed over to escape operation.

He denied that US drone strikes were part of the operation, adding that US had been asked to coordinate, but the operation was solely being carried out by Pakistani troops.

Control rooms had been set up with the Universal Access Number 1135 in different cities, so people could share information about any suspicious activity in their area.

Internally displaced persons

The DG ISPR told reporters that so far, nearly 36,804 families consisting of 456,292 individuals had been registered as internally displaced persons and that most of them had moved in with host families in Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat. Only a few hundred opted to stay in the camps set up for IDPs, he said.

Maj Gen Bajwa said that 50 army personnel and 20 officials of the National Disaster Management Authority had been deployed to ensure the registration of all IDPs.

Six ration points have been established in Bannu, DI Khan and Tank for the provision of food packets and medicines to IDPs and each family was given Rs15,000 and one month’s ration by the army. Of the registered IDPs, 221,000 had been immunised against polio drops and 32 relief collection points had been set up in different cities.

The DG ISPR said the National Database Registration Authority’s mobile vans were available to check the identity of incoming IDPs at registration centres. “IDPs are also being screened so that no terrorist can escape under the guise of an IDP,” he said.

The report further said that during the nikkah ceremony the 'haq mehr' was set at Rs500,000 adding that the newly-wed couple had departed from Haripur after the event.

Rubab is from Haripur in the Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province, and has recently taken intermediate examination. The 39-year-old cricketer, popularly known as Rawalpindi Express, had earlier this month refuted the reports regarding his impending marriage saying he was unaware about such news circulating on local media.

Restaurant owner and family racially abused in Australia

An Indian businessman in Australia has claimed that his family was racially abused and spat on by two men.

Raj Sharma, owner of the restaurant Indian Mehfil, along with his wife and two children, was racially abused and spat on by two men outside his restaurant in Ipswich locality in the Australian state of Queensland.

Ipswich City Council Safe City Programme and the police identified the two suspects for the attack, one of whom was arrested and charged with public nuisance offence.

A 22-year-old youth has been arrested for the attack on the family and is due to appear in court on July 16. The man was later granted watch house bail. A second male was issued with an infringement notice, The Queensland Times reported.

Ipswich Councillor Andrew Antoniolli, whose office is across the road from Indian Mehfil, said the attack was unacceptable.

"Clearly they're copping abuse from the church garden on a regular basis," he said, adding that "This incident is quite disturbing from the point of view of the racism, the language and the abuse."

Sharma said that three men were sitting on the hill near St Paul's Church started racially abusing his family who were on the veranda outside Indian Mehfil.

They turned their attacks to one of the restaurant's staff members who walked outside and then a passer-by who attempted to intervene.

"I took my wife and kids inside straight away and called the police," Sharma said, adding "One of the group then came inside the restaurant and continued to hurl abuse at them, spitting on Sharma's family."

He said the attacks on his staff, and only those of Indian descent, were regular, occurring as often as once a week.

"This is a common practice," Sharma said. "It used to happen at night. This happened in broad daylight," he said.

#Nigerian pop singer offers her #virginity to Boko Haram in exchange for missing girls

A 23-year-old Nigerian pop singer has offered her virginity to the militant group Boko Haram in exchange for the kidnapped school girls.

Pop singer Adokiye said she would sacrifice her virginity to the Boko Haram militants, led by Abubakar Shekau, in exchange for the return of the hundreds of schoolgirls they have kidnapped.

"This is 11pm in the night and do you know what I am thinking about? Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them. It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange," Adokiye told Vanguard in an interview.
"They are between 12 and15 year old girls for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to12 men have to take me every night, I don't care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents," singer Adokiye said.

Boko Haram militants stormed a secondary school in the northeastern village of Chibok on April 14 and seized 276 girls who were taking exams.

Buledi calls for 'suitable position' in #Balochistan govt for former CJP #Iftikhar Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD: Balochistan government’s spokesperson Jan Buledi called for a ‘suitable position’ for former chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry in the government on Thursday, while also defending his son Dr Arsalan Ifitikhar’s controversial appointment.

“Keeping in view the meritorious services for democracy, the rule of law and the constitution, in his capacity as a chief justice of Pakistan, Chaudhry Saahib, should also be appointed on a suitable post which must be in accordance to his stature,” Buledi told The Express Tribune.

Chaudhry’s role in the case of the Baloch missing persons had gained prominence in the apex court during his tenure.

When asked whether the Balochistan government was seriously considering appointing Chaudhry, Buledi said, “We do not have any suitable job available with us to be offered to the former chief justice in the province as … Chaudhry Saahib is big man and he must be given a government position which is equal to [stature].”

Dr Arsalan’s appointment

Buledi also defended the employment of Chaudhry’s son, Dr Arsalan Iftikhar as vice-chairman of the Balochistan Investment Board (BIB).

Setting aside the notion that Arsalan was accommodated on the recommendation of his father, he said “it was the chief minister’s own initiative”.

In 2012, a financial impropriety case was filed against Arsalan, following media reports that he had received between Rs300-400 million from Malik Riaz, a property tycoon and chairman of Bahria Town, to influence judicial proceedings.

Buledi said Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch had taken a wise decision to appoint Dr Arsalan and thinks it would play a key role in attracting international financial investment in the province.

“Arsalan is Baloch and has the capacity to serve his province,” he said, adding that the former chief justice’s son had served in the health department of Balochistan a long time ago.

While saying he was unaware as to who had recommended Arsalan for the job, Buledi stated, “I think it is in the greater interest of Balochistan and its people who are keen on the development of the province.”

Opposition political parties in the Balochistan assembly and civil society leaders have vehemently criticised the appointment made last week by the provincial chief minister and termed it unacceptable.

Senator Saifullah Magsi of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam –Fazal ( JUI-F ) spokesperson Jan Achakzai, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Assad Umer, and Tariq Mehmood, a former judge of the Balochistan High Court are among those who opposed the appointment.

Achakzai said that the JUI-F, being a key opposition party in Balochistan, had rejected Dr Arsalan’s appointment due to his corruption-tainted reputation in the past.

“The Balochistan government had time and again made tall claims of its drive against financial corruption in the province,” he said, adding that “this appointment has exposed the real situation of the provincial government.”

The JUI-F spokesperson also claimed that the ruling National Party (NP) is divided over the appointment, and said that a Baloch senator affiliated with the NP had promised the JUI-F leadership to review the chief minister’s decision.

Achakzai also claimed that certain members of the provincial cabinet are embarrassed over the issue.

Senator Magsi, son of former governor Balochistan Nawab Zulfikar Magsi, while raising his objection said that it was an unlawful decision on part of the chief minister.

“Relevant rules and regulations demanded a transparent procedure for such an appointment,” he explained, claiming that Arsalan’s appointment was made in a non-transparent manner.

An advertisement by the provincial government should have appeared in the newspapers for the vacant position of the vice-chairman of the BIB, but the government took its decision without meeting that essential requirement, he said.

PTI’s Umer – an economist and legislature – termed the appointment as an example of the worst administrative and financial corruption on the part of the Balochistan chief minister.

“Our party chief Imran Khan has also registered his protest over the issue, and he would continue to resist the appointment in his address to the public meetings,” the PTI leader said, adding that, “Arsalan had no background to run an investment board and he had been accommodated to appease some people.”

Former BHC judge Tariq Mehmood is of the view that it was not a simple matter of offering a job to an unemployed person.

“I would have never accepted such a job for my son had I been offered by the provincial government,” he remarked.

“The matter should be investigated by investigative journalists regarding who managed a government position for such a person,” he concluded.

Buledi, however, said he was not aware of any such reaction but admitted that the decision was not appreciated by anyone.

“I don’t know whether some people have welcomed the appointment,” he added. (Express Tribune)
