Haqqani commander among dead in US drone strike in Pakistan

A US drone strike killed at least seven militants in Pakistan's restive tribal belt on Thursday, including an important commander of the feared Haqqani network, security officials said.

The attack happened early Thursday in Nargas village of Birmil area, some 30 kilometres west of Wana, the main town of South Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border which is considered a stronghold of Taliban militants.

Officials and a militant source said four foreigners and an important commander from the ruthless Haqqani network, which is blamed for numerous bloody attacks in Afghanistan, were among those killed.

"At least seven militants were killed in the drone strike," an intelligence official based in Wana told AFP, adding that the dead included four foreigners and a top Haqqani commander.

"Abdullah Haqqani (the commander) was responsible for sending suicide bombers to Afghanistan," the official said.

Another official in the neighbouring garrison town of Bannu confirmed the death toll and killing of the commander.

A source in a militant group said that a vehicle loaded with arms and ammunition was also destroyed in the attack.

Pakistan's foreign ministry condemned the drone strike.

"Pakistan has consistently maintained that such strikes are a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity," foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told reporters in Islamabad.

"Drone strikes and their impact is a subject that is part of our talking points in our engagements with the US from the head of government level to the working level.

"Naturally, the United States has its own position which is not backed by international law and now the international public opinion," she added.

South Waziristan is one of the seven lawless tribal districts of Pakistan that border Afghanistan.

These semi-autonomous areas have for years been a hideout for Islamist militants of all stripes -- including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.

Washington pressed Islamabad for years to wipe out the sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal area, which militants have used to launch attacks on NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The Pakistani military launched a major offensive in North Waziristan in June and say they have killed more than 1,100 militants so far, with 100 soldiers losing their lives in the operation.

The area is off-limits to journalists, making it impossible to independently verify the number and identity of the dead.

The army assault was launched after a dramatic attack by militants on Karachi airport, which killed dozens of people and marked the end of faltering peace talks between the government and the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan routinely protests against US drone strikes, which have been targeting militants in the tribal areas since 2004, saying they violate its sovereignty and are counterproductive in the fight against terror.

But most analysts believe the resumption of the drone programme after it was suspended at the start of the year -- reportedly to give Pakistan space for negotiations with the Taliban -- is evidence of collusion between the two countries.

The Islamabad government and military officials strongly deny this.

Groom Leaves Bride After Her Wedding Joke

Groom Leaves Bride After Her Wedding Joke

For better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health ... but you'd better stay lookin' good.

That's the lesson a young bride in China seemingly learned after a very public spat with her groom.

She showed up for a wedding photo shoot in her white dress, as most brides do. But with the help of some stage makeup she looked 50 years older.

The apparent joke did not go over well with her groom. The couple got in quite the spat in Shenzhen City.

Honestly, we can see how having your 26-year-old bride showing up with fake wrinkles and gray hair, reminding you that you are going to spend your lives deteriorating together, may not be the most romantic of gestures.

The bride told local media, "I thought he would laugh and see it as a joke, but he was furious and told me there was no way he would have photographs of me looking like that. He then got in a taxi and left."

It's reported that the young woman was left alone in her dress, squatting down on the ground and crying before eventually getting a taxi back home herself.

The couple has apparently not spoken since, and there is no news on whether the wedding is set to go ahead.

There's no word on whether this was a staged reminder of the fickleness of love or an actual lovers' quarrel — either way we wish these crazy kids the best of luck.
Congo crowd kills man, eats him after militant massacres: witnesses

Congo crowd kills man, eats him after militant massacres: witnesses

BENI Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - A crowd stoned to death a young man in northeast Congo on Friday before burning and eating his corpse, witnesses said, in apparent revenge for a series of attacks by Ugandan rebels.

The incident in the town of Beni followed a number of overnight raids in the area blamed on the Islamist group ADF-NAUL, who are thought to have massacred more than 100 people this month, using hatchets and machetes to kill their victims.

Witnesses said the man, who has not been identified, aroused suspicion on a bus when passengers discovered he could not speak the local Swahili language and that he was carrying a machete.

Speaking from the town of Beni, Congo's President Joseph Kabila said the ADF-NALU militants would face the same fate as the rebel movement M23, which was defeated by a U.N.-backed government offensive last year.

"There is no question of negotiation with the terrorists," Kabila said in a speech at a local hotel. "They will be defeated as was the case with the M23. And it will be very soon."

ADF-NALU is an alliance of groups opposed to the Ugandan government that has operated from bases in neighboring Congo since the mid-2000s, undermining Kinshasa's grip on the area.

The movement was blamed for the deaths of 14 people, killed early on Thursday in the village of Kampi ya Chui, bringing the total death toll this month to at least 107, said Teddy Kataliko, president of the Civil Society of Beni.

Tensions ran high in the town on Friday morning with around 100 demonstrators blocking the road from the airport into town, throwing stones and waving machetes to demand greater government protection against the rebels.

Local government officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Earlier in the week, the government sought to downplay the threat posed by the group, which it had previously said was defeated in an operation earlier this year.

Estimates of its strength vary greatly, but the website of the U.N.'s peacekeeping mission in Congo estimates it has around 500 fighters.

The Ugandan government has said ADF-NALU is allied with Somalia's al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab movement, but analysts say the nature of these ties is not clear, despite the ADF-NALU's clear Islamist ideology.

In his speech on Friday, Kabila appealed for public support for a ramping up of its offensive against the group, but did not specify what that would entail.

"I call on the population to support the army because the victory against the M23 was because the population was behind the army," he said. "I call on young people to join the army in great numbers."

Kabila also defended the U.N. peacekeeping mission known as MONUSCO following criticism from locals that it had failed to defend them and had even collaborated with ADF-NALU.

Crowds of mainly young men attacked several peacekeeping facilities with stones and bows and arrows last week, forcing the evacuation of some staff.

The U.N. mission says it has stepped up patrols in the area in the wake of the massacres.

Stop playing on both sides of wicket, Imran tells Siraj -

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman, Imran Khan, has asked the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Sirajul Haq to stop playing on both sides of the wicket and clear his position on whether he stood for the status quo or change in Pakistan. In a statement issued here on Thursday, Imran termed the JI chief’s reported assertion that both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had similar interests as disappointing.

The JI leader has denied having issued a statement that the PML-N and PTI were two sides of the same coin.Earlier, a statement by JI’s Liaquat Baloch had not gone well with the PTI, wherein he had said that by songs and dances, no real change could take place. He said Sirajul Haq’s effort to equate the PTI with the Pakistan People’s Party and the PML-N was condemnable.

The PTI chief emphasised that Sirajul Haq would have to stand up against the corrupt circles if he wanted supremacy of the law. Imran alleged Sirajul Haq had forgotten ‘as usual’ the National Accountability Bureau cases against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former president Asif Ali Zardari.

The JI Ameer has barred his leadership from issuing statements in response to what Imran said.Sirajul Haq stood with Imran on elimination of corruption and rule of law in KP. Online adds: Imran Khan said it was indeed ironic that Sirajul Haq and the JI, which talked of the need to enforce the Islamic laws, was unwilling to see the PTI fight for the basic Islamic principle of justice as enshrined in the PTI struggle against rigging and theft of the people of Pakistan’s electoral mandate.

Khan reminded Sirajul Haq that wherever constituencies had opened, massive irregularities and blatant systematic rigging had been uncovered. He said that in three constituencies NA-154, NA-125 and NA-118, ballot box stuffing and fake votes had been discovered.

Khan also pointed out that in PP-147’s six polling stations that had been opened, massive fraud had been proven. That is why in the NA-122, the speaker of the NA continues to hide behind delaying tactics preventing the verification procedure from proceeding.

Khan said Sirajul Haq’s failure to recognise the injustice of the May 2013 elections despite a national political consensus that systematic rigging took place, raised serious questions about the commitment of the JI and its chief to the implementation of Islamic principles of justice.Khan also said Sirajul Haq could not, if he was honest, fail to recognise the corruption and robbery of the public resources by the PML-N and PPP for accumulating personal family assets. China's Xiaomi becomes world's third biggest smartphone maker without leaving Asia

China's Xiaomi becomes world's third biggest smartphone maker without leaving Asia

Over the past three months, more than 327 million new smartphones were shipped out from factories around the world, and young Chinese company Xiaomi has been responsible for more than 5 percent of them. That, according to IDC's latest figures, is enough to place it in third spot behind established leaders Samsung and Apple, overshadowing global competitors like Lenovo and LG. Xiaomi's rise has been remarkable both for how quick it has been and for the fact that the company still operates primarily in its home market of China. It has recently broadened its reach to adjacent countries in Southeast Asia like India and Singapore, but its growth remains testament to the incredible explosion in smartphone demand that China is experiencing.

A separate report from Strategy Analytics agrees with IDC's conclusions, while also highlighting Samsung as the biggest market share loser. Both data firms report Samsung ceding roughly 10 percentage points, meaning it's gone from commanding a third of the global smartphone market a year ago to a quarter today. The impact of this slowdown has been felt immediately by Samsung, which just reported its smallest set of quarterly earnings in a long time. Apple's as steady as ever, growing iPhone shipments with the release of its new 6 series, while LG, Lenovo, and Huawei are among a big group of companies contesting the fourth and fifth spots. As to Xiaomi, the company remains committed to its low-cost approach and will continue expanding internationally, however its global VP Hugo Barra told The Wall Street Journal this week that the United States does not figure in the company's expansion plans.

Companywide Operating Profit Doubles as Mobile Business Revenues Surge 39 Percent with Nearly 17 Million Smartphones Sold

Karachi, Oct. 31, 2014 — LG Electronics (LG) announced unaudited third quarter consolidated revenues of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 14.54 billion), an increase of 7.4 percent year-over-year, and operating profit of KRW 461.3 billion (USD 449.61 million), more than double the figure from the same period a year ago. LG’s earnings reflected strong performance from its mobile business which saw record smartphone sales in the third quarter with sales of 16.8 million units.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported third-quarter revenues of KRW 4.71 trillion (USD 4.59 billion), a slight decline of 3 percent from the same period last year. Operating profit of KRW 130.5 billion (USD 127.19 million) increased 5 percent from the same quarter last year due to better product mix. Sales of LCD TVs increased year-over-year in regions such as North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. LG expects sales of 4K Ultra HD TVs and commercial digital signage products to grow, while market demand for monitors and AV products is expected to slow.

The LG Mobile Communications Company shipped a record-breaking 16.8 million smartphones in the third quarter, an increase of 39 percent year-on-year and 16 percent more units than the previous quarter. Sales of KRW 4.25 trillion (USD 4.14 billion) and operating income of KRW 167.4 billion (USD 163.16 million) were the highest in the company’s history since the third quarter of 2009. Building on its momentum and two consecutive profitable quarters, LG expects to strengthen its positioning in the smartphone market with its G Series and L SeriesIII models despite the landscape becoming more competitive.

The LG Home Appliance Company reported revenues of KRW 2.91 trillion (USD 2.84 billion), a slight decrease from the same period the year before, despite improved sales in Korea, Europe and developing markets such as the Middle East and South East Asia. Greater competition in North America and unfavorable foreign currency exchange rates resulted in a lower third–quarter operating profit of KRW 51.8 billion (USD 50.49 million). LG expects profitability to increase in the fourth quarter with an expanded home appliance product portfolio and improved cost structure.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solution Company reported revenues of KRW 925.6 billion (USD 902.14 million), a 5 percent decline from a year ago. An operating loss of KRW 2.5 billion (USD 2.44 million) was primarily due to weak demand in residential air conditioners in Korea related to weather conditions, which offset steady growth in the Middle East and Latin America. LG expects overseas sales to improve with more customized and higher energy efficient systems while it targets the growing construction and civilian industries in Korea with its commercial products.

2014 3Q Exchange Rates Explained

LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period ending September 30, 2014. Amounts in Korean won (KRW) are translated into U.S. dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period of the corresponding quarter — KRW 1,026 per USD (2014 3Q).

Search begins to find site for cadet college in Chitral

CHITRAL: The commandant of the Chitral Scouts has been tasked with searching a suitable place for the establishment of a cadet college in the landlocked district.

Several sites, including Kaghlasht, Mori Lasht, Lawi (Drosh), Ayun and Chitral city are being considered to set up the cadet college in the largest district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It may be mentioned that MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin had appealed to the prime minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor and corps commander Peshawar to help establish a cadet college in the district.

“It would be a giant step and a major breakthrough in providing quality education to the youth in Chitral as they are faced with a stiff competition from students from other districts,” said the MNA when contacted by telephone.

Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain has ordered the establishment of sub-campuses of the Federal Urdu University in Booni, Chitral and Drosh. The MNA said he had sent a letter to the president, requesting him to order the establishment of the sub-campuses.

He said he had also held a meeting with the vice-chancellor of the Federal Urdu University in January 2014 and requested him to include degrees in Hotel, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Mining, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The News 29 Oct 14

Taking world’s highest road into record book

FOUR employees of Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) did the country proud by becoming the first Malaysians to cycle across the Karakoram Highway, the highest paved international road in the world that connects Pakistan and China across the Karakoram mountain range.

Their feat was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records, which presented them with a certificate at a ceremony in the Kajang Stadium.

The recipients were Mohd Shahrizaifuddy Shamsuddin, Ashraf Nasir, Shamsol Omar and Ismail Mat Rasidin.

They traversed a total of 1,300km across the highway, located on altitudes over 4,000m and in some parts higher than Mount Kinabalu in Sabah.

The XPDC Karakoram Highway, which ran from Aug 30 to Sept 12, was supported by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The four cyclists from MPKj were split into two teams, one departing from Islamabad in Pakistan and the other from Kashgar, China as they made their way across the Karakoram Highway to meet at the mountain city of Gilgit.
The four cyclists from MPKj were split into two teams, one departing from Islamabad in Pakistan and the other from Kashgar, China as they made their way across the Karakoram Highway to meet at the mountain city of Gilgit.
The idea for the ride came from MPKj president Datuk Hassan Nawawi Abd Rahman, who is an avid cyclist.

“We are very proud of our council employees for managing this feat, despite the tough challenges they faced.

Ashraf (with cap) said that one of the most memorable experiences of the Karakoram Highway expedition was the hospitality of the locals.

“I am confident that with this achievement, more Malaysians will be inspired to make their own record-breaking feats in cycling,” said Hassan.

The teams were split into two, one starting their journey from Islamabad in Pakistan, while the other set off from Kashgar, China.

They met in the capital city of Gilgit, within the Gilgit-Baltistan territory of Pakistan.

Some parts of the ride were accompanied by the local authorities, including the Pakistani police, as the riders had to cross dangerous areas controlled by rebels or the Taliban.

The riders had many stories to share on their experiences.

Ashraf (with cap) said that one of the most memorable experiences of the Karakoram Highway expedition was the hospitality of the locals.
Ashraf (with cap) said that one of the most memorable experiences of the Karakoram Highway expedition was the hospitality of the locals.
For Ashraf, who was part of the team riding from Islamabad, the most memorable experience was interacting with the locals.

The 26-year-old technician from MPKj Project Management Department said that despite being poor, the local tribes were very respectful of tourists and did what they could to welcome them.

“Although some barely had enough to feed themselves, they often insisted on treating us to a simple drink and a meal,” said Ashraf, adding that he was touched by their hospitality.

“It made me realise that we have much to be thankful for in Malaysia,” he said.

Ashraf felt that the most challenging part of the ride was the road conditions, which were often bumpy and uneven in places.

There were also frequent rockslides although nothing major occured during their journey.

Ismail, who rode from Kashgar, said that the expedition was “difficult but fun.”

“It was very cold in Kashgar, but as we made our way to Pakistan, the temperatures went up to 36 degrees Celcius,” said Ismail, who suffered nosebleeds due to the sudden climate change.

“We often had to ride in the rain or under the hot sun,” he added.

“I was not used to the food and missed Malaysian food. The meals there were usually simple naan cheese or chapati,” said Ismail, 40, who has been attached to the Project Management Department for 10 years.

He said the team trained for a month before the expedition, cycling through hills in Kajang.

Road conditions were one of the main challenges faced by the cycling team as they cycled across the Karakoram Highway linking Pakistan and China across the Karakoram mountain range.

The four riders are part of the council’s cycling team and regularly go for expeditions all over South-East Asia.

“We have been on expeditions to Medan, Jakarta, Bali, Phuket and Koh Samui, so in a way we have been constantly in training,” said Ismail, adding that the Karakoram highway was the most challenging ride yet.

Ismail said he loved the beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains as they made their way to Gilgit.

“When I finished the challenge there was a sense of disbelief. Then came a fulfilling sense of accomplishment, and I knew that if I put my mind to it, I could do anything,” he said.

Pakistan's Malala receives US Liberty Medal

Malala Yousafzai, the child rights activist and youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, received the Liberty Medal and pledged her $100,000 award to education in her homeland Pakistan.

PHILADELPHIA: Malala Yousafzai, the child rights activist and youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, received the Liberty Medal and pledged her US$100,000 award to education in her homeland Pakistan.

Yousafzai won the annual prize from the National Constitution Center for her "courage and resilience in the face of adversity and for serving as a powerful voice for those who have been denied their basic human rights and liberties," the NCC said.

The 17-year-old gave a speech outlining her desire to see 57 million children out of school given the right to an education, speaking less than two weeks after winning the Nobel prize with India's Kailash Satyarthi.

"I'm honored to receive this medal," she said in an address peppered with jokes. "It encourages me to continue my campaign for education and to fight for the rights of every child," she added, announcing the money would go toward education in Pakistan.

She called on countries around the world to stop spending money on weapons and instead invest in their children's futures. "Education is the best weapon through which we can fight poverty, ignorance and terrorism. So I ask all countries all around the world, let us say no to wars."

The schoolgirl, who currently lives in Britain, rose to prominence in Pakistan by campaigning for girls' right to education. In October 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman and is regarded with suspicion and hatred among many in Pakistan.

Evacuated to Britain, she made a remarkable recovery and today attends school and flies around the world to champion for universal access to education through her Malala Fund charity.

"Malala's courageous fight for equality and liberty from tyranny is evidence that a passionate, committed leader, regardless of age, has the power to ignite a movement for reform," said NCC chairman Jeb Bush. "Let us all, young and old, strive to be like Malala - to challenge the status quo and to serve as catalysts for meaningful change."

The Liberty Medal is awarded to people who strive to secure freedom for people around the world. Past recipients include former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Shimon Peres, Kofi Annan and Bono.

* Bangladesh says has tightened security on border with India
* Militants also sought to assassinate main opposition leader
* India has arrested at least six, found dozens of bombs (Adds detail about madrasa in West Bengal, analyst comment)

By Reuters - Rupam Jain Nair and Andrew MacAskill

NEW DELHI, Oct 29 (Reuters) - India's top counter-terrorism agency has uncovered a suspected plot by a banned militant group to assassinate the prime minister of Bangladesh and carry out a coup, three senior Indian security officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

India will hand over a dossier to Bangladesh with details of the plan by members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, which has carried out scores of attacks in India's eastern neighbour, the government and police officials said.

Bangladesh did not comment directly on the assertions that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had been the target of a plot, but said it had tightened security on the border with India.

Mainly-Muslim Bangladesh has suffered three major army coups and two dozen smaller rebellions since gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971 in a war that killed and displaced millions.

The alleged conspiracy was discovered after two members of the group were killed in an explosion while building homemade bombs at a house in West Bengal in eastern India earlier this month. Indian police say the militants were Bangladeshis and were using India as a safe haven to plan the attacks.

"The strategy was to hit the political leaders of the country and demolish the democratic infrastructure of Bangladesh," said a senior Indian Home (interior) Ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"This was all being planned on Indian soil and we could have been blamed if there was an attack."

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Monday visited the house where the blasts took place and met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss the situation.

The revelations come against a backdrop of political friction earlier this year between Indian nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Banerjee.

On one campaign stop in West Bengal before his general election victory in May, Modi said illegal immigrants from Bangladesh should get their "bags packed" if he came to power.

Analysts said the speech sought to mobilise Modi's Hindu support base against Banerjee, who leads a regional party in West Bengal that is backed by many of the Muslims who make up a quarter of the state's 90 million population.

Asaduzzaman Khan, Bangladesh's junior home minister, said Dhaka had been tipped off about a possible militant plot.

"We have received this information unofficially from India about a terror threat to top politicians in Dhaka. This is the first time there has been such information," said Khan.

"We are always serious about curbing the activities of the militants. After the news from India our (security) efforts have been raised manifold."

West Bengal Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee declined to comment.

Modi reached out to leaders of neighbouring countries as soon as he was elected, inviting them to his inauguration as prime minister, and he sent his foreign minister to Dhaka to establish friendly relations. However, border disputes and water sharing remain unresolved issues between the two countries.

MASSIVE ATTACKS

The Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen also planned to assassinate the country's main opposition leader, Khaleda Zia, the Indian officials said. Prime Minister Hasina and her chief rival, Zia, have dominated the country's politics for more than a decade.

The security officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the record, did not say how the militants planned to carry out the assassinations.

The outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujihadeen detonated nearly 500 bombs almost simultaneously on one day in 2005 across Bangladesh, including in the capital, Dhaka.

Its militants later carried out suicide attacks on several courthouses, killing 25 people and injuring hundreds.

Earlier this year, gunmen opened fire and tossed bombs at a security van carrying members of the group on the way to court.

"The group were a very serious threat in 2005 and up to 2008, but they have now been very badly decimated," said Ajay Sahini, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi that monitors militant groups across South Asia.

"The group's leadership has been eroded, which means their planning capability and capacities for execution have been seriously limited."

India has arrested at least six people tied to the coup plot, according to the National Investigation Agency, the law enforcement institution investigating the case.

The suspects were radicalised in "violent jihadi ideology" at a local madrasa, about 35 km (22 miles) from the blast site, according to the agency.

Police found nearly five dozen crude bombs and arrested two women who were living in the same house and were trying to burn bomb-making manuals after the incident. In a nearby home, police found 35 unexploded bombs.

"It is an embarrassment for India because it is a sign we haven't taken the threats from these groups seriously enough," said S. Chandrasekharan, director of the South Asia Analysis Group in New Delhi. "The border with Bangladesh is literally open at the moment.

"The quantity of explosives secured is probably only a minuscule amount of what has been built." (Additional reporting by Serajul Quadir in Dhaka and Sujoy Dhar in New Delhi; Editing by Douglas Busvine, John Chalmers and Mark Heinrich)

Gene inciting violent crimes discovered

Gene inciting violent crimes discovered

LG UNVEILS LATEST ECO-FRIENDLY HVAC SOLUTIONS AT CHILLVENTA 2014

Newest Lineup of Innovative Products and Technologies Designed for High Standards of European Efficiency, Performance and Durability

LG Electronics (LG) will give visitors to Chillventa 2014 their first look the company’s latest residential and commercial HVAC products as well as its renewable energy solutions. A biennial event taking place from October 14–16 at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg in Germany, Chillventa is the premier European tradeshow for refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation and heat pumps.

The LG booth at Chillventa 2014 will feature five main sections: Multi V IV Zone, Multi V Zone, Therma V and RAC Zone, Inverter Single and Multi Split Zone and the BMS Zone. There will be live demonstrations of the company’s newest technologies including Multi V IV Heat Recovery, Hydro Kit, Therma V and ARTCOOL Stylist Inverter V. All LG products on display at this year’s Chillventa are energy efficient, eco-friendly and offer incredible installation flexibility.

“Already one of the world’s largest providers of HVAC and energy solutions, LG’s presence is becoming increasingly visible in markets throughout Europe,” said Jae-sung Lee, president of the LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solution Company’s commercial unit. “Chillventa provides us with a fantastic opportunity to showcase our excellent HVAC solutions, which are designed to raise the bar for energy efficiency and deliver the eco-friendly results that are so important to LG and our European customers.”

At Chillventa 2014, LG will demonstrate energy efficient heating technologies such as its Multi V IV Heat Recovery of Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) solution, ideal for commercial buildings such as hotels, hospitals and offices. A central component in LG’s lineup, Multi V IV Heat Recovery was designed to allow simultaneous heating and cooling in different building zones. Though capable of running these two very different functions at the same time, this system is able to save energy even when both functions are in use. For example, with the heating and cooling operation rates at 60 and 40 percent respectively, the LG Multi V IV Heat Recovery system achieves an impressively high coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 8.5, resulting in a maximum energy savings of 30 percent over conventional systems.

Multi V IV Heat Recovery can help meet the hot water needs of medium to large sized buildings when combined with LG’s Hydro Kit water heating solution. Working in tandem to minimize energy consumption, this combination can rapidly heat water to a maximum temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. The Multi V IV Heat Recovery solution generates powerful heating airflow and helps the Hydro Kit perform its floor and water heating duties at the same time. In keeping with LG’s green vision, these systems produce a minimal amount of CO2 emissions and lower energy costs by recycling heat from all connected indoor units.

Optimally suited for new or recently renovated houses, LG’s Therma V offers a reliable supply of hot water, effective floor heating and optimum flexibility. The main strength of Therma V is its ability to deliver superb energy efficiency without sacrificing performance. Weather Dependent Operation Mode automatically adjusts the indoor temperature in response to changes in outside temperature in order to provide optimal comfort and convenience. What’s more, this system’s Silent Mode lowers operational noise at night or whenever a quieter environment is desired.

The elegant ARTCOOL Stylist Inverter V will highlight LG’s advanced residential air conditioning showcase at Chillventa 2014. In addition to their beautiful aesthetics, LG’s 2014 residential models are designed with discerning European consumers in mind. Energy-conserving inverter technology, effective health care benefits from technology such as Plasmaster Ionizer Plus and convenience-enhancing smart functions such as Active Energy Control and LG AC Tag On provide customers with unbeatable value.

Visitors to Chillventa 2014 are invited to visit LG’s interactive exhibition booth in Hall 7–410 of Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from October 14-16.
LG Showcases Latest Range of Energy Efficient Refrigerators at IFA 2014

LG Showcases Latest Range of Energy Efficient Refrigerators at IFA 2014

Cutting-Edge Refrigerators Deliver Enhanced Performance, Energy Savings, Style and Convenience

LG Electronics (LG) is introducing its newest lineup of energy efficient refrigerators at IFA 2014 in Berlin, Germany featuring arange of models offering excellent energy savings and utmost convenience designed specifically with high European standards in mind. LG’s evolutionary refrigerators help keep food fresher longer while making food storage and organization easier and more convenient.

Superb Energy Savings with LG’s Revolutionary Inverter Linear Compressor
With an incredible Total No Frost energy grade rating of A+++ -20%, LG’s bottom-freezer refrigerators are industry leaders in efficiency. This can be attributed to its advanced Inverter Linear Compressor, which employs a straight piston drive instead of a conventional reciprocating drive, resulting in less internal friction, higher reliability, greater durability with less noise. In tests conducted by VDE, LG refrigerators featuring Inverter Linear Compressor technology proved to be approximately 32 percent more energy efficient1 than those equipped with conventional reciprocating compressors, contributing significantly to lower electricity bills. VDE also noted that LG’s refrigerator was up to 25 percent quieter2 compared to another refrigerator powered by a reciprocating compressor. And thanks to its strong durability, LG’s Inverter Linear Compressor comes with 10-year warranty.

Innovative Door-in-Door™ for Quick & Easy Access with Less Cold Air Loss
LG’s convenient Door-in-Door™ design makes it easier to reach frequently consumed food and beverages in the refrigerator while reducing the amount of cold air that escapes from the main refrigerator compartment by up to 41 percent3, keeping food fresher longer. LG’s adjustable Moving Basket combines with a handy drawer section to enable custom configurations. Each member of the family can easily adjust the height of the different interior compartments according to their own needs. This proven Door-in-Door™ feature has been adopted by all of LG’s global refrigerators, including side-by-side, multi-door and top freezer.

Smarter Storage in a Bigger Space for Maximum Flexibility
A thinner insulation wall enables LG’s new four-door refrigerator to boast a cavernous internal capacity. The central partition typically found in two door refrigerators has also been eliminated, allowing the refrigerator to create even more usable food and beverage storage space. What’s more, the convenience enhancing Smart Storage System features space management technology that improves storage separation and also helps owners organize the contents of their refrigerator in more creative ways.

Total No Frost with Intelligent Air Management for Fresher Food
Whereas most conventional internal-airflow systems disperse cool air inconsistently, LG’s advanced Total No Frost technology, featured in all LG refrigerators, offers even cooling throughout the interior. Thanks to the Multi Air Flow system, cool air is circulated through multiple vents, ensuring efficient cooling at an even temperature throughout. And LG’s unique Pure N Fresh air filtration system employs a powerful fan to remove odors while at the same time introducing purified air through fresh air flow channels, ensuring that food stays fresh longer.

Smart Technology and Convenience Enhancing Features
LG’s Smart Diagnosis™ feature, offered in some LG models, allowing call center representatives to quickly diagnose any problems in the refrigerator without having to make a house call. The lattice-type box cover of the Moist Balance Crisper™ improves moisture retention, helping to boost the longevity of vegetables and fruits. Located in the main refrigerator compartment, the convenient Fresh 0 Zone is an ideal place to store meats and fish, as users can access these oft-used items immediately without having to freeze and thaw them.

LG’s new contour glass bottom-freezer refrigerator (model GBB930KRQZT) is a 2014 Red Dot Design Award winner that pairs refined aesthetics with thoughtfully designed features. The contour glass exterior of this unique and premium model offers a combination of luxurious modern style and impressive performance.

“European consumers are very eco-aware and rank energy efficiency as the top factor when choosing home appliances,” said Seong-jin Jo, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “LG’s latest refrigerators have been engineered with this fact in mind. Each model employs an array of cutting-edge technologies that minimize one’s carbon footprint while maximizing performance and user convenience.”

Visitors to IFA are encouraged to come see LG’s lineup of stylish and energy efficient refrigerators for themselves at LG’s booth in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.
