Sethi sends Rs50 bn defamation notice to TIP

LAHORE: Senior journalist Najam Sethi on Friday sent a Rs50 billion legal notice to Transparency International Pakistan (TIP) for defaming him in a letter accusing him of evading tax.

The notice declared the letter, sent by TI-Pakistan Chairman Suhail Muzaffar as “false, ill founded, unsubstantiated” and based on “malicious remarks and insinuations”.

Muzaffar, in the letter which was also sent to the president, chairman NAB, federal tax ombudsman, registrar of Supreme Court and the media, praised Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Tariq Bajwa on the recovery of what he claimed as evaded tax of Rs10.625 million from Sethi.

The journalist blamed the organisation for spearheading a campaign of vilification of him.

“The wrongs committed through Publication by yourself, for which according to law you are directly responsible, constitute both civil as well as criminal wrongs,” said the notice.

The anti-corruption watchdog has been given an opportunity to tender an apology within a week for the loss it has caused to the journalist, or pay Rs50 billion in compensation.

Pakistan’s total debts surge by 8.5pc to Rs16.383 trillion in 2014

Pakistan’s total debts surge by 8.5pc to Rs16.383 trillion in 2014

KARACHI: Pakistan’s total debt surged 8.5 percent to Rs16.383 trillion as on December 31, 2014 from Rs15.097 trillion in the corresponding period of 2013, central bank said on Friday.

The significant surge in total debt during the year suggests that government borrowed massive from domestic resources to reduce fiscal deficit.

“Due to the non-realization of planned external inflows and to meet the IMF target on government borrowing from the central bank, the government was compelled to rely more on commercial banks for deficit financing,” a banker said.

Late last year the government got a setback when it scrapped a 10 percent planned sale of shares in the country’s biggest oil exploration firm – Oil and Gas Development Company Ltd – following lukewarm response from the local and foreign buyers.. The government had hoped to raise $815 million.

The central bank said the government raised Rs3.809 trillion through Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs) in 12 months, which took the overall borrowing through various bonds to Rs4.137 trillion as of December 31, 2014.

Domestic debt and liabilities surged by 13.06 percent to Rs11.89 trillion as of December 31, 2014 as against Rs10.516 trillion as on December 31, 2013 solely because of liquidity mopping through PIBs.

However, government’s short term floating debt was reduced by 24.73 percent to 4.418 trillion in the 12 months of 2014.

Borrowing through government issued Ijara Sukkuk (3-year) declined by 11.83 percent to Rs326.4 billion in the year under review.

Muzammil Aslam at Emerging Economic Research said government’s fiscal deficit was on higher levels i.e. 6-7 percent of GDP, which resulted in higher borrowings.

“Tax revenues are not being increased while government has not been able to cut subsidies, which is causing higher fiscal deficit,” Aslam said and added that country received foreign inflows last year otherwise the government’s debt and liabilities could have been much higher.

Aslam suggested that government should focus on broadening increasing the tax net and enhancing direct tax collection to increase its revenues.

The central government’s total external debt declined by 0.12 percent to Rs4.752 trillion as on December 31, 2014 as against Rs4.758 trillion on December 31, 2013. Its external debt excludes IMF loans to State Bank for balance of payment support, foreign exchange liabilities and IMF loan for budgetary support.

Analysts said that higher borrowing from domestic banking system reflected that fiscal measures taken by the PML-N government were not fruitful and the government was dependent on banks to meet its financial obligations.

The stocks of domestic debt and liabilities have reached new highs mainly due to higher fiscal deficit, shortfall in tax revenue collection and subsidies to power sector.

Government’s efforts to improve financing mix of budget deficit and lower its reliance on SBP borrowing also subdued credit off take by the private sector, analysts said.

According to SBP, total credit to private sector increased by Rs224.5 billion during first half of the current fiscal year; lower than the credit uptake of Rs325.8 billion during the same period last year.

“This slowdown in credit growth could be attributed to both demand and supply side issues such as weak corporate profitability of major industries till September 2014, government borrowings from commercial banks amid slower deposit growth, challenging security situation, falling commodity prices and continued energy/gas shortages for the industry,” the central bank said.

“Moreover, heavy government borrowing from commercial banks has constrained their ability to lend to the private sector.”

EBM donates 200M to AKUH for NICU expansion

The Aga Khan University Hospital inaugurated its newly expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit today with the support of English Biscuits Manufacturers (Pvt.) Limited. The expanded NICU will offer emergency, inpatient and intensive care treatments for babies born early, providing the best possible specialised care to its neonate patients.

EBM has generously funded the Rs 200 million expansion, and are the first partners in the Aga Khan University and University Hospital’s effort to increase private fundraising to expand its academic and clinical facilities at its Stadium Road campus.

“Welcoming a baby is such an exciting time. For parents of babies born early, however, it is a time of anxiety. Families and their new additions need specially trained medical staff, special equipment and special understanding to survive this period. We are delighted to partner with AKUH on this initiative,” said Dr Zeelaf, Chairperson, EBM at the inaugural ceremony. “We, as a company, have always been conscious of our social responsibility and have endeavored to institutionally strengthen initiatives for public welfare.”

Every year, 600 babies are referred to the NICU - from AKUH and other hospitals in the city - because many babies are born early, with low birth weights or with complications - are at risk for a variety of neurologic and developmental problems in childhood.

The Level III NICU at the University Hospital, gifted by Rashada and Khawar Butt of EBM, provides the highest level of care for critically small or ill newborns. There are four wards with five incubators in each, four isolation rooms with two isolation rooms for babies with infections and two ‘negative’ isolation rooms for babies with communicable infections. The new 9,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility will allow the University Hospital to care for more babies at risk.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Muhammad Sohail Salat, Chair, NICU Commission Group, AKUH, thanked the EBM team for this help in meeting the specialised needs of preterm babies in the city. He spoke of how the new NICU, with double the number of beds and nursing staff, has realized University Hospital’s vision of helping more than 1,000 pre-term newborns every year, allowing the hospital to apply new technological advances in newborn intensive care in a family-centered environment.

“We are extremely grateful for this magnificent donation from EBM. This was the first gift in our campaign to raise substantial funds from the corporate sector in Pakistan for the University Hospital,” said Firoz Rasul, President of Aga Khan University. “Such generosity enables us to initiate specialty and acute care services to provide world class healthcare in Pakistan.” PR

King Salman left Super Power Obama alone on his arrival in Saudi Arabia to obey the Supreme Lord of the Universe

On his way back to US, President Barack Obama landed in Saudi Arabia to offer his condolences to the royal family on the demise of King Abdullah. When Obama reached there, King Salman left the ceremony to welcome Barack Obama midway to offer Namaz. In the video, Barack and Michelle Obama arrive at the airport where Saudi officials welcome him. Saudi King Salman also shares a handshake with the couple.

But before Obama could walk the red carpet, King Salman leaves the place for performing evening Namaz. He does not forget to greet Obama but then leaves in a rush. He might have given an excuse for leaving the ceremony in between. Obama later walks the red carpet and then moves to the scheduled place in his car.

Obama might have found this behaviour unusual because whenever the US President visits any country, the emperor or head of the country greets him with exceptional hospitality. So did Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But the Saudi King Salman preferred religious responsibility over the official ceremony to welcome Barack Obama.
Defamation case: Babar Awan to represent Imran Khan against ex-CJ

Defamation case: Babar Awan to represent Imran Khan against ex-CJ

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Former law minister and Senator Dr Babar Awan on Thursday submitted his license in order to represent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in defamation suit filed by former Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

District and sessions Judge Nazir Ahmad heard the case proceedings when Iftikhar Chaudhry’s lawyer, Sheikh Ahsan, objected stating that former CJ suspended Awan’s practice license so he might hold a grudge against the plaintiff.

Babar Awan stated that the case will bring a lot of details to light adding that Imran Khan had to take it to the streets to protest against the blatant injustice. Both the lawyers also exchanged verbal blows during the argument.

Judge Nazir Ahmad remarked that court will pass the judgment without any pressure. Court ordered Imran Khan to submit response pertaining to the defamation suit in the next hearing and directed Iftikhar Chaudry’s lawyer to provide rationale of the objections pointed at Babar Awan.

Case hearing was adjourned till February 14.

Earlier, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had submit a Rs20 billion defamation suit against Imran Khan. Khan had accused that ex-CJP was involved in rigging in 2013 general election.

The defamation notice has been submitted against Khan for maligning the top judiciary of the country and bringing the former judge to disrepute.

Meanwhile, the court had issued a notice to Khan and summoned him on January 29.

Saudi Air Force sergeant gets 35 years to life for raping boy in LA

A Saudi Air Force sergeant convicted in the rape of a 13-year-old boy at a Las Vegas casino hotel was sentenced on Wednesday to 35 years to life in prison for the crime, a court spokesperson said.

Mazen Alotaibi, 25, was found guilty in Las Vegas in 2013 of kidnapping, burglary, coercion, lewdness on a child and sexual assault on a minor over a 2012 New Year's Eve attack.

Prosecutors say Alotaibi, who was visiting Las Vegas while temporarily stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, lured a then-13-year-old boy to a room at the Circus Circus hotel and sexually assaulted him.

Under the sentence imposed in a Las Vegas court, Alotaibi is not eligible for parole for a state-mandated 35 years, according to court spokesperson Mary Ann Price. If he is released, he will be required to be under periodic supervision, Price said.

The judge did not sentence Alotaibi for his conviction for coercion, and a court hearing for the judge to impose a sentence on that count is scheduled for Monday, Price said. (Reuters)

ISIS Threatens To Behead Obama, Threatens Japanese And Jordanian Hostages

Three ISIS fighters issue a menacing message to Obama.
ISIS issued a menacing message to Barack Obama and threatened the lives of Japanese and Jordanian hostages in new online messages.
In an online video discovered by the Middle East Media Research Institute, three ISIS fighters stand behind a Kurdish fighter who is on his knees before them.

One of the fighters, clad in black, issues the following message to Obama:

Know, oh Obama, that will reach America. Know also that we will cut off your head in the White House, and transform America into a Muslim Province.
He then threatens France and Belgium:

And this is my message to France and to its sister, Belgium. We advise you that we will come to you with car bombs and explosive charges, and will cut off your heads.
The video fades to black as one of the ISIS fighters holds a knife to the Kurdish captive’s throat.

In a different message, ISIS says that a Japanese hostage and a Jordanian pilot hostage have less than “24 hours left to live.”

ISIS demands the release of  Sajida al-Rishawi, a woman held by Jordan for her role in deadly attacks at Aman hotels that killed at least 57 people. It is only in exchange for her that ISIS says it will release the prisoners.

What is believed to be the voice of Kenji Goto Jogo, a freelance Japanese journalist held hostage, is heard in the message: “Any more delays by the Jordanian government will mean [that] they are responsible for the death of their pilot, which then will be followed by mine.”

He adds: “I only have 24 hours left to live, and the pilot has even less. Please don’t leave us to die.”

Feel free to share your thoughts about the brutal messages from ISIS.

The colonel was leading an operation against suspected separatist militants in a village in south Kashmir's Pulwama district when he came under fire.

A policemen and two militants were also killed in the encounter, police superintendent Tahir Saleem said.

Tens of thousands of troops are deployed in the Indian side of Kashmir to put down the insurgency which began in 1989 and has weakened over the past several years.

India worries that militant groups based in Pakistan will turn their attention to Kashmir as foreign forces complete their withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This month alone, 10 militants have been killed in violence.

After sealing deal with Obama, PM Narendra Modi all set to woo China

After sealing deal with Obama, PM Narendra Modi all set to woo China

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to travel to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping before he completes one year in office on May 26.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is visiting China on January 31 to meet her counterpart Wang Yi for bilateral talks and will return on February 3.

National security advisor Ajit Doval, who is also India’s Special Representative for Boundary Talks, is planning to travel to China to meet his counterpart State Councillor Yang Jiechi in March for round 18 of talks to resolve the vexed border dispute.

"The dates for PM visit will be finalised by March with President Xi keen to host him in his hometown Xian. PM Modi has also expressed his desire to undertake the Mansarovar yatra through new Nathu La land route before travelling to Beijing,” said a senior Indian diplomat.

During the bilateral talks in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told US President Barack Obama that New Delhi would protect its security interests on a priority basis but also closely cooperate with Beijing on economic and global issues.

Modi also told President Obama that India was pursuing the same China policy as US as the latter was also economically engaging Beijing. This was a clear signal that India would not like to be used by any third power against China.

Although much has been read into India-US Strategic Vision for Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean region, senior Indian officials say that it is a “ strategic misinterpretation” to perceive this document as Japan-Australia-US-India alliance against China.

“ Prime Minister Modi told President Obama as ASEAN countries were comfortable with New Delhi and US with Japan and Australia, the two could join hands for maritime security in the region,” said a Indian diplomat.

With President Obama and PM Modi discussing China for nearly an hour during the bilateral talks at Hyderabad house, the Indian leader conveyed that boundary dispute with Beijing was a security concern that need to be sorted out.

But at the same time, PM Modi apparently conveyed to President Obama, India was looking towards a high degree of engagement on economic,  infrastructure development and climate change with China.

“ PM Modi was balanced in his approach towards China in talks with President Obama and told him that even US was engaging China on the economic front in spite of its own security concerns vis-à-vis Beijing,” said an Indian diplomat.

Although the 18th round of Special Representative talks are expected to be held in March, NSA Ajit Doval wants to focus on the boundary dispute and will push for at least the two sides exchanging maps of the western sector (Aksai Chin) so that frequent face-offs between Indian and Chinese armies are avoided.
