With LG 360 CAM and Google Street View, Share and Enjoy 360-Degree Content with Ease

Karachi: With the announcement of the LG 360 CAM at Mobile World Congress last week, LG Electronics (LG) expects to see an increase in interest in creating and sharing 360-degree visual content using mobile devices. With the introduction of affordable, consumer-friendly devices such as the upcoming LG 360 CAM and the G5 smartphone, creating and sharing 360-degree content will be as easy as pressing a button.

While many phones and point-and-shoot cameras have a panorama mode, 360-degree spherical images and videos take visuals even further by including everything in the scene, including the ground and the sky. With its compact, portable size and high-resolution images, the LG 360 CAM is one of the first imaging devices to take advantage of the growing trend of 360-degree content creation. In fact, this is the first camera from a smartphone manufacturer to be optimized for Google Street View with its support for the Google-backed Open Spherical Camera (OSC) API.

With the free Google Street View app installed on their iOS or Android smartphones, LG 360 CAM owners will be able to easily capture, upload and share their 360-degree content directly from their phones without having to convert or process their files into the appropriate format, a time-consuming process. LG 360 CAM features three embedded microphones and supports 5.1 channel surround sound recording. It is equipped with an internal battery with a capacity of 1,200mAh allowing for up to 70 minutes of video recording. With its microSD card slot, the camera can be extended to a maximum of 2TB.

“This announcement of the LG 360 CAM means a lot to over 500 million Street View users and all who loves to create and share 360-degree contents,” said Charles Armstrong, Product Manager of Google Street View. “With its capability to create 16MP images, the LG 360 CAM will be the most preferable choice for anyone to join in the fun of 360-degree content.”

“Until recently, creating 360-degree images and videos required expensive and heavy equipment out of the reach of everyday consumers,” said Kim Hong-joo Kim, Vice President and Head of product planning at LG Mobile Communications Company. “LG 360 CAM will enable users to create their own content easily and share them freely in a way that nurtures a new mobile ecosystem within the LG Playground.”

Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) takes SDGs to the field in Balochistan

Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) takes SDGs to the field in Balochistan

Participants of Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund fourth provincial workshop on, ‘Taking SDGs to the Field’, in Quetta.
Islamabad: The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund conducted the fourth provincial workshop on, ‘Taking SDGs to the Field’, in Quetta. The objective of the workshop was to emphasize the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 5 around achieving gender equality and empowering all women. This platform allowed participants to discuss ways PPAF and its partners could take forward SDG Goal 5 and to reach an agreement with the field staff to take forward the commitments on inclusion and equity. Field staff and senior management from partner organizations in Balochistan implementing PPAF Program for Poverty Reduction funded by the Italian Development Cooperation, Government of Italy participated in the workshop.

Mr. Meer Mohammed Tareen, Legal Advisor to the speaker of the provincial assembly represented the Balochistan Government and gave the keynote address. He applauded PPAF for creating a platform to discuss the low gender indicators and noted that Balochistan is the first province to have a female speaker in a provincial assembly. Furthermore, since. Ms. Raheela Durrani has assumed responsibility as the speaker, an active dialogue regarding gender empowerment has been present within the assembly. He added that Balochistan was desperate for funding to develop infrastructure, strengthen education programs and improve accessibility to quality health workers and facilities. He said that with the development of infrastructure projects, social mobilization and social awareness, the women of Balochistan will be better empowered. Therefore PPAF and its partners should increase social mobilization which will lead to social awareness of basic rights at the grassroots thus building a social pressure leading to accountability of the government officials and better implementation of government strategies and policies. Finally, Mr. Tareen said that the civil society needs to represent women’s issues, and in order to do that, women need to voice their concerns and challenges.

Mr. Nadir Gul of the Balochistan Rural Support Program highlighted that natural resource degradation has a direct correlation with the social and economic development of communities which hampered attainment of the MDGs. He mentioned that a collaboration of economic, environment and social integration will be a more effective strategy to improve policies that improve gender empowerment. In addition, Mr. Gul stressed that women are the biggest victims of the water crisis in Balochistan. The expectation from society and the home is for women to gather water for the household, resulting in girls being marked absent from schools. He stressed that social mobilization is an effective tool to help governance and that female economic independence leads to overall empowerment of women and enhances their ability to lead in society and be involved in decision making processes at home.

Mr. Qaiser Jamali, provincial coordinator, UNESCO, quoted ex Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch who outlined that there were 600 ghost schools with 200,000 ghost students. Civil society and Government need to work together to target teacher accountability. He emphasized that out of 12,500 schools in the Province, only 3400 cater to girls. Therefore, he proposed that a joint strategy be developed and implemented that decentralized powers to the district level, created a merit based system for teacher selection, and developed a monitoring system for the operation and attendance of teachers and students.

Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund is playing a leading role to ensure equity, inclusion and women’s participation within the organization and amongst the partner organizations. PPAF is committed to bringing empowerment and improving representation of women, poor, youth, minorities, transsexual, migrants, and highly vulnerable individuals or with special needs, insecure and/or any other marginalized community through a transformative framework.

As part of its Gender Action Plan 2015, PPAF held the first national level retreat of social mobilizers/organizers, and credit officers of its POs, following which provincial workshops are being conducted across Pakistan. Social mobilizers are a bridge between PPAF and the communities and bring about a sustainable change in terms of access to resources, behaviour as well as economic condition. However, bringing about this transformation is not easy, especially, for the women social mobilizers.

Three-year-old girl beheaded in 'random' attack outside subway station in Taipei

A three-year-old girl has reportedly been decapitated in what local media reports are describing as a random attack outside a subway station in Taipei.

According to Taiwanese media, a man identified only by his surname Wang has been arrested following the attack and remanded in custody.

The girl was riding her bicycle a short distance in front of her mother when the man approached, and the mother was quoted by the TVBS broadcaster as saying she initially thought he was going to help her cycle up the hill.

When he pulled out a large knife and attacked the girl, however, she was unable to prevent the attack.

Local media said the man was tackled by passers-by and police were called shortly before noon on Monday.

TV footage showed an angry crowd gathered outside the police station where 33-year-old suspect Wang was being questioned.

The government-run Central News Agency said he had an arrest record for drug crimes and had been treated for mental illness.

His father, quoted by the Eastern Broadcasting company, said he lived at home and was unemployed.

Karachi: Dr Shireen Narejo, Special Secretary Health Government of Sindh, along with Fahad Ashraf, Director Marketing Reckitt Benckiser, and Asim Saleem, representative from Plan International Pakistan announced the launch of “Dengue Se Paak Pakistan” campaign to further the cause of a dengue-free Pakistan. This was announced at a press briefing held in Karachi where the importance of undertaking proactive measures to reduce the incidence of dengue was highlighted.

The incidence of dengue increases post rainy season due to stagnant water that becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This year, provincial governments are taking proactive measures at the grass root level to ensure reduction in the incidence of dengue in Pakistan, which has significantly increased in the last 5 years. In 2015 alone, 3,692 cases were reported in Sindh while KPK and Punjab accounted for 1,397 and 4,281 dengue victims. These cases were reported across urban cities as well as rural settlements.

“The Sindh government is already working on a dengue prevention and control programme. We want to proactively plan for this season to ensure people are adequately equipped with the right tools to protect themselves from diseases like dengue.”
said Dr Shireen Narejo speaking to reporters at the event.

Fahad Ashraf also spoke about the Campaign,
“This initiative is in line with RB’s philosophy of ‘Healthier lives, happier homes’. Mortein has been actively involved in enabling and empowering families to protect themselves from mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue, since the past several years. This time with this campaign we aim to go national and have envisaged a Dengue Se Paak Pakistan. We appreciate the government’s support immensely in this regard.”

The Campaign aims to reduce the incidence of dengue all over the country through a multi-pronged approach that will focus on a number of pre-planned activities characterized by a combination of innovative approaches to generate maximum impact and learning. These activities will focus on educating people mainly on 4 key areas mainly: cover (open water containers and getting rid of stagnant water puddles); clear (trash and keep surroundings clean); safety (through use of anti-mosquito products) and, support (each other by encouraging this behavior). A ‘Dengue Se Paak Pakistan’anthem sung by acclaimed vocalist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan also forms part of the Campaign’s awareness plan.

Explosions hit Brussels airport, metro station; at least 13 killed: Belgian media

by Reuters
Two explosions tore through Brussels airport on Tuesday morning killing 13 people in what Belgian public broadcaster VRT called a suicide attack, and a further blast struck a metro station in the capital shortly afterwards.

The Belga agency said shots were fired and there were shouts in Arabic shortly before two blasts rang out at the airport. Pictures on social media showed smoke rising from the terminal building through shattered windows and passengers running away down a slipway, some still hauling their bags.

All public transport in Brussels was shut down, as it was in London during 2005 militant attacks on the underground that killed 52. The Belgian Crisis Centre, clearly wary of a further incident, appealed to the population: "Stay where you are".

The blasts at the airport and metro station occurred four days after the arrest in Brussels of a suspected participant in November militant attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. Belgian police had been on alert for any reprisal action.

British Sky News television's Alex Rossi, at the airport, said he heard two "very, very loud explosions".

"I could feel the building move. There was also dust and smoke as well... I went towards where the explosion came from and there were people coming out looking very dazed and shocked."

"The thinking here is that it is some kind of terrorist attack - that hasn't been verified by any of the authorities here at the airport."

The blasts triggered concern across western Europe with Britain calling a meeting of its crisis response committee. The Dutch military strengthening security at airports and borders and London’s major airports Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and City said they were working to provide a high police presence.

Video showed devastation inside the departure hall with ceiling tiles and glass scattered across the floor. Some passengers emerged from the terminal with blood spattered over their clothes. A witness said the blasts occurred at a check-in desk.

The metro station hit by the explosion was Maelbeek, close to European Union institutions. There were no details immediately available of casualties in this second incident of the morning.

VRT said the blast went off on a carriage of the underground train but that no one was killed. Earlier, private broadcaster VTM had said there were reports of the metro death toll at 10.

“The government steers the agenda of Digital Pakistan as a progressive member of growing global digital economy. For this purpose, we are continuously pooling in resources with the very responsive private sector to strengthen our digital foundation through effective public private partnerships. We appreciate the support being provided by our partners, such as Mobilink, to further Digital Pakistan agenda. We are working to connect the unconnected on a priority basis and all our endeavors with the industry are aligned to achieve our accelerated digitization objectives and for the revival of sustainable and inclusive growth, benefiting the citizens and overall economy,” said Anusha Rahman.

While appreciating the renewed focus of the mobile industry on incorporating digital citizen based services into the future business strategy, the Minister added “The policy of MoIT fully aims at partnering with the industry players in bringing market innovation that impacts lives of our citizens delivering socio-economic empowerment.”

“The success of any business is linked to the socioeconomic success of the marketplace in which it operates. It is our priority to find ways to help drive an innovative, productive and high employment economy, where the population at large can reap full benefits of our digitized services,” said Jeffrey Hedberg, President & CEO – Mobilink.

“This Digital Innovation Lab will be the cornerstone of our initiatives to engage digital entrepreneurs, and industry innovators, in whatever capacity required, to speed up the provision of high quality digital solutions to the masses.”
He further added, “The progress we have made in the direction of a digital revolution, in the past three years, could not have been possible without the continuous support of the Ministry of IT and the Government of Pakistan. Without their vision and policies geared towards a Digital Pakistan, our efforts would have gone in vain.”

“New advancements in Digital Services open up limitless possibilities in Mobile Health, Payments, Education, Security, IoT and M2M, while driving rapid economic growth and job creation”, said Aamir Ibrahim, Deputy CEO & CCO – Mobilink while elaborating on key elements that are to be the focus of the Digital Lab initiative. “The idea of having a Digital Innovation Lab is to provide easy access to Digital Innovators and Game Changers so they have a profound impact on the way people interact and engage online.”

As a Telecom Leader in Digital, we go above and beyond providing mere connectivity or access, we are at the forefront of enabling Digital Innovation and Connecting the Unconnected. This welcome development looks to tap in to the enormous digital potential Pakistan holds, and provides a launch-pad to speed up the digital revolution by partnering up with local and global players taking keen interest in the market.

In a very interactive discussion with the Mobilink leadership there was a mutual agreement on effectiveness and utility of the upcoming USF Telecenter program as well as the National incubation Center initiative of MoIT, for achieving the GoP-Industry joint objectives.

Several key points on further strengthening effective PPP arrangements to leverage these joint resources were discussed.

It was agreed that a workshop on possible implementation mechanisms with full participation of the industry as well as the USF and R&D Funds of MoIT, will be held to chart out practical course of action with full involvement of the Telecom Industry, for the future.
