PTA receives 8,000 complaints over sharing of objectionable content online
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has received more than 8,000 complaints regarding the sharing of blasphemous content on social media websites.
According to a PTA official, “PTA has established a web analysis cell where 25 IT experts are working solely on identifying unlawful content on internet, including blasphemous material.”
He said that blasphemous material was being shared over the internet in different forms, including literature, pictures, audios and videos. He said that identification of blasphemous material without human intervention was not possible, adding that this was the reason why PTA had deployed a team of 25 IT experts for this purpose.
The official further said that, “PTA has blocked around 13,210 blasphemous links. In light of these facts, way too much content is being produced and uploaded on the internet every minute. It is almost impossible to block all links that carry blasphemous content.”
It is important to mention here that PTA has developed an electronic portal to facilitate stakeholders to lodge complaints relating to any objectionable web content. An email address was also advertised in the media to facilitate the general public regarding providing information about objectionable online content.
PTA had also requested the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Information Technology and Federal Investigation Agency to upload these guidelines on their respective websites, while also requesting all stakeholders concerned to report objectionable content to the relevant platform directly. PTCL, KP Government Sign Agreement for Wi-fi Installation in Education Institutions

Khushhali #Microfinance Bank Inaugurates its New Branch in #Hunza
Hunza: Khushhali Microfinance Bank (KMBL) has inaugurated its new branch in Hunza. This branch will offer all-inclusive banking services including Group and MSME loans, deposit, remittances, online transfer and insurance. The new Hunza branch is KMBL’s third branch in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region; the other two are present in Gilgit and Gahkuch.

UP: Pregnant Dalit woman touches upper cast’s bucket; killed along with unborn child
New Delhi (Web Desk) In an appalling incident, a pregnant woman was punched repeatedly in the stomach, her head was banged against the wall for touching the bucket of an upper cast Thakur. According to sources, the incident occurred on the morning of October 15, when Savitri Devi, a Dalit woman accidentally ‘touched’ a bucket belonging to Anju, an upper caste Thakur while collecting garbage from homes in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district.
The wire with reference to Indian Express, has quoted Savitri’s neighbour Kusuma Devi, as saying ‘Anju stormed towards her, punched her repeatedly in the stomach and banged her head on a wall. She kept accusing Savitri of ‘defiling’ her bucket by touching it.” Later, according to Kusuma Devi, Anju’s son Rohit joined his mother in beating Savitri with sticks.
Savitri was rushed to the district hospital by her husband, Dilip Kumar. The hospital gave no treatment to her, saying that there was no external bleeding and she was fine. However Savitri’s condition worsened on October 21, and when Kumar took her to hospital she was declared brought dead.

Over 156,000 students from private schools switch to govt schools: Atif Khan
PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on Monday claimed that they had managed to convince over 156,000 students to switch their private schools for government-run schools in the province.
Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education Atif Khan, in a statement released on Monday, claimed that the migration over the past academic year was proof of the improvement the government has brought in not only the services provided at these schools but also of the improved educational standards on offer in the province.
Noting that corruption remains one of the main issues afflicting the country, the minister said that if the scourge is dealt with, Pakistan has everything in abundance including the availability of natural resources along with hardworking and talented human resource and the weather conditions to develop the country.

“Eradication of corruption is at the top of the agenda for the PTI government in the province,” Atif said, as he ranked improvement of the law and order situation on second.
“Justice for the people at large without any discrimination, improvement in the police force and then concentration on education and health sectors, both of which were in shambles there,” he explained.
Atif said that the police system had brought at par with most modern independent systems practised elsewhere in the world while the health and education sectors, like all other institutions, have been fully and permanently cleared of political interference.
“So much so that over 40,000 people were recruited on merit and not a single of them is even alleged to have been recruited without merit. The same can be said of the health situation,” he said while pointing out that 32 highly qualified specialists and surgeons returned to the Lady Reading Hospital after completing courses abroad.
The minister also said that the party faced immense resistance in its efforts to eradicate corruption and political interference in the province, but PTI withstood the pressure and remained steadfast in their commitments – a move appreciated by the public as they see the results of that move.
Talking about the party’s oft-repeated stance about the country’s growing debt burden, Atif said that giving up the begging bowl was a pre-condition for development.

India says it won't close embassy in North Korea
Oct. 25 (UPI) -- India said it plans to maintain its embassy in North Korea, citing a need to keep channels of communication open with the reclusive state.
Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said Wednesday during talks with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in New Delhi that embassy-level diplomatic ties will not be scrapped despite Pyongyang's provocations, Yonhap reported.
Swaraj also said trade with North Korea has declined and the embassy in Pyongyang is "very small," according to the report.
The top Indian diplomat also said she had told Tillerson of India's decision and that countries with friendly ties with the United States should stay to keep communication open with North Korea.
In April at the United Nations Security Council, Tillerson said members of the U.N. should suspend or downgrade diplomatic relations with North Korea.
Pyongyang's diplomats often do more than conduct diplomacy when overseas, and are responsible for business operations that earn foreign currency for the Kim Jong Un regime.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump declared ties have "never been stronger" following their summit in June, but India has also maintained diplomatic relations with Pyongyang since 1973.
India is North Korea's third-largest trading partner, but according to the Press Trust of India, annual trade has declined to $134.33 million in fiscal year 2016, from $198.78 million in 2015.
India has also banned all trade in weapons in March 2017, and has banned the import of North Korea seafood, lead ore and textiles.
On Wednesday, North Korea's state television stressed "internal solidarity in its programming," a sign the country is bracing itself for the impact of sanctions that will hit North Korea's energy supply, South Korean news service News 1 reported.
Nam Kwang-kyu of the Maebong Unification Research Center told News 1 the long-term effect of the current sanctions "will not be easy to overcome" for North Korea.

The Beijing-based company, which is listed on the NASDAQ with a current market cap of $21 billion, announced today it will offer up to $700 million in convertible senior notes in order to finance "working capital needs and potential acquisitions of complementary businesses."
Any acquisitions are likely to be in China and could well focus on video and entertainment, where Weibo is finding serious traction, and ad tech, where it has made recent investments.
Beyond a valuation which is nearly double that of Twitter, which has struggled to get to anything close to profitability, the Chinese service has gained widespread attention for having a larger userbase than its U.S. peer and very impressive financials, too.
Weibo claims 159 million daily users -- and 361 million monthly -- and, according to unaudited figures released this week, its most recent quarterly profit reached a record $101.1 million up from a then-record $73.5 million in the previous quarter. It's worth noting that the previous quarter had seen profits increase by 184 percent year-on-year so there's plenty of momentum right now.
The company has credited its surging video and mobile ads business for the revenue jumps, with the Weibo platform rapidly standing out as a platform for entertainment and celebrity news for young generations in China.
Weibo's biggest backers are parent firm Sina (media) and e-commerce giant Alibaba, both of which help funnel advertising revenue to the business. Together the two investors own more than 70 percent of Weibo.

Pakistan gives Tillerson frosty welcome after US warns over Taliban havens
Islamabad (AFP) - US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson got a frosty welcome to Pakistan Tuesday after Washington turned up the heat on Islamabad for allegedly providing "safe havens" for Taliban militants.
America's top diplomat was quietly greeted by a mid-level Pakistani Foreign Office official and the US ambassador David Hale at the military airport in Rawalpindi, an AFP photographer saw -- a welcome that, while marked with smiles, was devoid of the pomp that usually accompanies high-level visits.
He was then driven in a convoy amid tight security to the US embassy in Islamabad's diplomatic enclave, before meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the powerful military chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and other top officials.
It was not clear how long the meeting lasted, but the secretary left Pakistan for India Tuesday evening, less than four hours after landing.
The visit was the first to nuclear-armed Pakistan by a senior Trump administration official and comes months after the US President angrily accused Islamabad of harbouring "agents of chaos" who could attack US-led NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan.
It follows on the heels of an unannounced stop in Afghanistan Monday, where Tillerson reiterated America's commitment to the country and warned that Washington has made "very specific requests" of Pakistan over militancy.
Washington and Kabul have long accused Islamabad of supporting Afghan militant groups including the Taliban. They are believed to have links to Pakistan's shadowy military establishment, which aims to use them as a regional bulwark against arch-nemesis India.
Pakistan has repeatedly denied the charge, insisting it maintains contacts only to try to bring the militants to peace talks.
"Tillerson reiterated President Trump's message that Pakistan must increase its efforts to eradicate militants and terrorists operating within the country," a statement from the US embassy said Tuesday.
But Tillerson also expressed his appreciation to Pakistan for the sacrifices it has made in fighting militancy and for its help in securing the release of a US-Canadian family held captive by the Taliban for five years.
"We are committed in the war against terror. We have produced results. And we are looking forward to moving ahead with the US and building a tremendous relationship," Abbasi replied, according to a pool report.
A statement from the prime minister's office later said the US and Pakistan had "agreed to build upon the understandings reached in the dialogue process" -- but also linked regional stability to Pakistan's dispute with India over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. Both claim it in full and have fought two wars over the mountainous region.
US and Pakistani sources say Tillerson's visit to Islamabad will be followed later in the year by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis as Trump seeks to send a tough message to its ally.
- No pleasing the US? -
The US-Pakistan relationship has waxed and waned dramatically since Donald Trump took office in January.
Pakistan said the US President had praised its then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif as "terrific" in an effusive phone call when Trump took office in January.
But Trump's blistering speech in August accusing Pakistan of harbouring militants saw Islamabad angrily hit back at the claims, insisting the US took no account of the thousands of lives lost and billions spent in fighting extremism.
Following the August speech, Tillerson cautioned Pakistan that it could lose its status as a privileged military ally if it continued providing support to Afghan militant groups.
As one of 16 "Non-NATO Major Allies", Pakistan benefits from billions of dollars in aid and has access to advanced US military technology banned from other countries.
Political analyst Zahid Hussain said there may be little Islamabad can do at this point to convince the US it is acting in good faith.
"The perception here is whatever they do, it is not going to please the Americans," Hussain told AFP.
Earlier this month Pakistani forces acting on American intelligence said they had rescued a US-Canadian family held by the Taliban for five years, sparking hopes that ties would improve.
The rescue was followed by drone strikes on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border targeting long-time foes of both Washington and Islamabad.

Coca-Cola to invest up to $90 million in Kenya to broaden product range
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co plans to invest up to $90 million in Kenya over the three years through 2018 to increase its product range in the region’s biggest economy, the soft drinks maker said on Tuesday.

Coca-Cola, which is the leader in the Kenyan soda market with brands like Coke and Fanta, has committed to invest $17 billion in Africa as a whole since 2014, double what was invested in the continent a decade before, the company said.
The group, which faces growing competition in Kenya from other soft drinks producers like SABmiller and PepsiCo, said on Tuesday it will produce a wider range of soft drinks in the country from 2018 but did not give details.
“It brings the total investment by The Coca-Cola Company in Kenya, between 2016 and 2018, to $90 million,” Coca-Cola said in a statement.
PepsiCo takes Aquafina premium; with vitamins, flavours
PepsiCo, maker of Pepsi cola, Mountain Dew lime drink and Kurkure snacks, is taking its packaged water brand Aquafina premium in flavours and fortified with nutrients, the company’s senior VP (beverages) Vipul Prakash said.
A Rs 1,000-crore plus brand, Aquafina competes with Ramesh Chauhan’s Bisleri and Coca-Cola’s Kinley in the crowded and intensely competitive packaged water space.
“The move is in continuation of our portfolio transformation exercise, which includes reduction of calories in carbonated drinks and introducing zero or low-sugar beverages across the hydration space,” Prakash said.
PepsiCo said the new product, called Aquafina Vitamin Splash priced at Rs 30 and 50, had the lowest sugar component in its category compared to others in the domestic market.
Prakash said the company is betting big on hydration, and was looking at introducing more drinks with vitamins, flavours, and possibly even in the herbal space with products such as ayurveda water, in response to rapidly evolving consumer preferences for functional beverages. “We expect the new product to contribute 10-15% of the packaged water mix over three years. Base water will remain the core product for us,” he added.
