LG Introduces World’s First 8K OLED TV at IFA

First To Mass Produce Large Screen OLED TVs, LG Poised to Lead Market in Advanced Premium TV Technologies LGE_8K OLED TV_00

Seoul / Karachi: Already a leader in advancing TV innovation with its OLED TVs, LG Electronics (LG) is introducing the world’s first 8K (7680 x 4320) OLED TV at IFA 2018. The 88-inch 8K LG OLED TV features over 33 million self-emitting pixels to produce the unmatched contrast ratio and true blacks that define OLED TV’s iconic picture quality.

With OLED TV shipments in the market expected to double in 2018 and reach over nine million units by 2022, LG will continue to increase the OLED share in its premium TV portfolio and drive large scale consumer adoption of OLED TVs. While the 8K TV market is still in its infancy, it is expected to grow to more than 5 million units by 2022 and LG is committed to leading the ultra-premium market with its 8K OLED TV technology.

Despite advancements in LCD field, OLED has been often referred to as the “next-generation display technology” because it emits its own light, eliminating the need for any kind of backlighting. This allows for state-of-art TVs which redefine both the picture quality and the product design. Not only was LG able to pioneer such technologies, but it was also able to successfully market them.

“LG’s first 8K OLED TV is the pinnacle of technological achievement and the next evolutionary step in display technology” said Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “4K OLED played a major role in reshaping TV industry and LG is confident that 8K OLED will do the same.”

Crackdown on hashish and cannabis plants - #Cannabis crops destroyed in #Chitral

CHITRAL: The police began a crackdown on hashish and destroyed cannabis plants and arrested growers in Mulkhow area of upper Chitral.

A police official told Dawn that sub-divisional officer of the Mulkhow police station Attaullah led the crackdown on the cannabis crops cultivated on a vast piece of land.

He said the police also recovered a large quantity of liquor from the possession of hashish dealers, who were allegedly involved in the peddling of other drugs as well.

The official said the police had zero tolerance towards the production, sale and use of narcotics and liquor in the district and would continue the crackdown on those involved in it until their elimination.

Also in the day, former district secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chitral chapter Saifur Rehman Mashkoor has demanded of the central and provincial leadership to ensure the party’s reorganisation in the district.

In a statement issued here on Monday, he said the PTI’s current district president had miserably failed to strengthen the party in the region.

He said the party had dedicated workers and was popular in the area.

Mr Mashkoor said the party’s district president had lost many elections but continued to occupy the office.

He warned if the leadership didn’t step in for corrective measures, including reorganisation, the party would disintegrate in the district.

Teenage girl, boyfriend beheaded by father and uncle in Attock village

Teenage girl, boyfriend beheaded by father and uncle in Attock village

An 18-year-old girl was beheaded along with her 21-year-old boyfriend by her father and uncle in what the police are calling yet another incident of honour killing, DawnNews TV reported on Monday.

The incident, that took place in a small village in Attock district, transpired when the man arrived at the girl's house to meet her, police said. Soon after, the girl's father Masood and her uncle Waheed walked in and, after tying the victims with ropes, beheaded them with a sharp object.

The police have arrested both suspects and recovered the murder weapon as well, Sub-inspector of Saddar police station Asif Khan told DawnNews TV. The bodies of both victims have been sent to District Headquarters Hospital for an autopsy after which they will be returned to their families. A case of double-murder has also been registered.

Honour killings continue despite new laws
Scores of people in Pakistan, an overwhelming majority of whom are women, are still being murdered by relatives for bringing 'shame' on their family, more than a year since new laws came into force aimed at stemming the menace of 'honour killings'. In October 2016, a joint sitting of both houses of parliament passed two key pro-women bills that had been pending assent for a long time.

The move at that time was cautiously hailed by women's rights activists. More than a year on, however, lawyers and activists say honour killings are still occurring at an alarming pace.

At least 280 such murders were recorded by the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan from October 2016 to June 2017 ─ a figure believed to be understated and incomplete.

The legislation mandates life imprisonment for honour killings, but whether a murder can be defined as a crime of honour is left to the judge's discretion.

That means the culprits can simply claim another motive and still be pardoned, according to Dr Farzana Bari, a widely respected activist and head of the Gender Studies Department at Islamabad's Quaid-i-Azam University.

Google, Facebook agree EU ”fake news” code of conduct

Major tech companies including Facebook and Google agreed Wednesday on a code of conduct to combat online disinformation in the European Union, although critics said the commitments were too weak. Seven months before the European elections, the code published by the European Commission, the EU''s executive arm, called in particular for the withdrawal of advertising revenues from disseminators of "fake news".

In addition, companies agreed that the source of adverts should be clearly labelled and also agreed to closer scrutiny of ad content disseminated on platforms. They will also track the misuse of automated bots to distribute fake news and expand the possibility for users to lodge complaints about suspect posts. AFP

$2 billion invested in power infrastructure since 2009: K-Electric CEO

K-Electric's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Moonis Alvi Monday said that the power utility has invested some $ 2 billion in its power infrastructure since 2009. The investment, he said has resulted in addition of 1,057 megawatts to its system, strengthening of distribution network, increasing the transmission capacity along with deployment of several customer centric solutions.

He stated this while addressing the 3rd Financial Reform for Economic Development (FRED) Forum here at a local hotel. The event FRED III is led by the South Asian Federation of Accountant (SAFA) and hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP) and the Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMA Pakistan).

While giving an overview of past challenges, he apprised the attendants that in 2009, KE was a troubled utility facing significant financial and operational bottlenecks with cash loss of around PKR 1 billion per month, inability to purchase fuel, accumulated losses of over PKR 50 billion as at June 30, 2008 and several outstanding sovereign & circular debt issues.

"Our initial efforts helped rehabilitate and turn the Bin Qasim power plant more efficient," Moonis said. "Then we brought online more plants while adding 1,057 megawatts to the system. We also added more grid stations and changed cables, including bringing in Aerial Bundle Cables to reduce tripping, distribution losses and power theft. It also helped to reduce load shedding."

Moonis further said that KE has so far not paid any dividend as the profits have been re-invested into the business. "This has resulted in exemption (from power outage) of 70 percent of Karachi including all industrial zones and strategic installations." KE executive said the continuous stream of investment from KE has further strengthened the power infrastructure and "reinforced its long-term commitment to serve the people of Karachi."

K-Electric meets energy demands of Karachi and some adjoining parts of Balochistan. Currently, KE's five plants in combined cycle have the installed generation capacity of 2,267 megawatts. The power utility has also established 30 customer care centers which, through one-window operation, offer solutions to the consumers in addition to operate an award-winning contact center.

VOOC also boasts an intelligent five-layer protection system from the adaptor to the port and interior of the phone. VOOC has replaced the voltage reducing circuit with a MCU, making VOOC a cool fast charging tech. You can also use your phone and maintain high speed fast charging, which high voltage fast charge will not be able to support.

Since OPPO launched VOOC in 2014, VOOC has applied over 500 patents and is used by over 90 million consumers, making VOOC the most mature commercial fast charging technique. The color design aesthetics of the OPPO F9 reflects both OPPO's design ideology and insights into what aesthetics appeals to young consumers around the globe.

OPPO F9 is the first phone to use Corning gorilla glass 6 on both front and back sides giving the users more protection.  Furthermore, the screen occupies almost all of OPPO F9 except for a small droplet shaped notch called the “Waterdrop Screen”, inspired by a water drop. Innovation is what OPPO is known for and with the F9, OPPO has taken it to a whole new level.

Landmark achieved: WAPDA completes Transmission Line on highest-ever altitude Golen Gol Hydropower Project connected to National Grid

Chitral: The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) achieved yet another landmark, as it succeeded in completing the most difficult transmission line from Golen Gol (Chitral) to Timergara for evacuation of power generated by Golen Gol Hydropower Project to the National Grid. The 180-kilometer long Golen Gol-Timergara transmission line crosses through the most difficult mountainous terrain having extreme weather conditions. As many as 706 transmission towers including 141 towers of 132 kilovolt and 565 towers of 220 kilovolt have been erected on the snow-clad mountain peaks including that of Lowari Top at the highest altitude of 10312 feet. The transmission towers in Pakistan have never been erected earlier at this altitude.

Tough construction of transmission lines does not fall within the ambit of WAPDA after unbundling of its Power Wing way back in 2007, WAPDA took the construction of transmission line for Golen Gol Hydropower Project as a challenge. It not only completed the task on its own but also successfully energized the said transmission line two days ago. Resultantly, Golen Gol Hydropower Project has now been connected to the National Grid. Thus, the project has started providing electricity to the system through its second unit on trial basis via the National Grid. The second unit is being operated on various loads in accordance with the standard operating procedure (SOP) up to its maximum generation capacity of 36 MW.

Earlier the first unit of Golen Gol Hydropower Project has been providing electricity to Chitral and its adjoining areas since its commissioning in January this year through a local arrangement developed by WAPDA to evacuate electricity generated by the first unit to fulfill the entire energy requirements of Chitral. The project since its commissioning has provided more than 33 million units of electricity to the consumers.

Third and the last unit of the project is also complete. The wet commissioning of third unit will also commence very soon by connecting it to the National Grid.

Golen Gol Hydropower Project has been constructed on Golen Gol – a tributary of River Mastuj – near Chitral. The installed generation capacity of the project is 108 MW with three generating units, each of them having a generation capacity of 36 MW. The project has been completed in a phased manner. The project will provide 436 million units of electricity to the National Grid every year. Benefits of the project have been estimated at Rs. 3.7 billion per annum.
