Technology an enabler of spiritual, social and commercial activities in Pakistan during the holy month of Ramadan
New online survey commissioned by Facebook shows majority agree technology help them follow Islamic practices during Ramadan
Islamabad, 30 May 2019: During the holy month of Ramadan and in the run up to the celebrations for Eid, people in Pakistan are adopting new technology to observe timeless traditions in modern ways.
Results of an online survey by Facebook show that 57% of respondents observing Ramadan, in Pakistan and who also own a mobile phone agree with the statement: “Mobile phones help me to follow Islamic laws and practices during Ramadan.” Almost three quarter of respondents (71%) agreed that mobiles helped them stay more closely in touch with friends and family during the holy month. Being connected is important, most respondents agree (68%), as it helps them know more about what is happening during Ramadan.
Facebook commissioned Kantar to conduct an online quantitative research study in Indonesia, Turkey, USA, UAE, Egypt, Pakistan, UK, France and Nigeria to understand how people observe Ramadan and how their daily routines change during the holy month. The research was conducted in April 2019 and included 954 respondents from Pakistan.
Majority of Pakistani respondents (99%) agreed that Ramadan is more important when compared to other occasions with 94% of Pakistani parents saying it is important to share traditions with their children. Eighty per cent of respondents agreed that they experience a stronger sense of community during Ramadan.
Umar Qamar, Founder of Pakistan based fashion house Export Leftovers (elo), agreed that the holy month of Ramadan was a significant one not just for the business but also for the community. “The holy month of Ramadan and Eid is anxiously awaited by Muslims around the world and it is the same in Pakistan. During this auspicious month, Allah Almighty not only opens His doors of mercy and forgiveness upon all of us but also blesses us with countless opportunities.”
Along with the focus on spirituality, the survey shows that Ramadan also has an important social side - 61% of respondents agree that it is a time to spend quality time with family and friends. This is also reflected in the way that Pakistanis use social media during Ramadan. Eighty-five per cent of Pakistanis surveyed said they use the Facebook Family of Apps during Ramadan, with WhatsApp emerging as the most used service with 73% of respondents using it during Ramadan. Connecting with friends and family is one of the top reasons for accessing Facebook services during Ramadan, along with discovering spiritual content - from participating in prayer groups on WhatsApp to sharing religious quotes and sermons on Messenger.
“The key takeaway is that Ramadan is a time of great spiritual importance and community and that technology is increasingly integrated into rituals for the holy month. It also has an important social side and brands have an opportunity to forge meaningful connections with their audiences at this time through inspiring and relevant content,” said Ali Khurshid Ahmed, Client Partner-South Asia, Facebook.
The survey also shows that during Ramadan, people tend to focus on purchasing food, clothing and household items. Sixty-one per cent of respondents agree that Ramadan is a time for good food, 37% say it is the best time to find good deals and 37% agree that they like dressing up for the occasion. “The holy month of Ramadan signifies new beginnings and is the biggest occasion of the year to shop for everything from clothes to makeup and platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp have become key tools of marketing for us today.” said Mr Qamar.
A quarter of respondents said they spend the same or more time than usual researching what to buy during Ramadan. Of those who plan Ramadan purchases in advance, thirty-four per cent of respondents said they use Facebook and Instagram for research on clothing and fashion and 30% of respondents who plan in advance said they use Facebook and Instagram to research household appliances.
Ramadan observers are open to brand communication through the Facebook Family of Apps. According to the survey, 40% or respondents prefer Facebook as a channel for communication with 33% being open to communication on WhatsApp and 15% being open to a brand approaching them on Instagram. “At elo, we have successfully used Facebook and WhatsApp to promote and sell our products and have witnessed a significant increase in business orders as we offer Ramadan sales through our Facebook page,” added Mr. Qamar.

LG to Accelerate Development of Artificial Intelligence with Own AI Chip
LG to Accelerate Development of Artificial Intelligence with Own AI Chip
New AI Processor with LG Neural Engine Designed for Use in Various Products Including Robot Vacuum Cleaners, Washing Machines and Refrigerators
Karachi: May 30, 2019: As part of its strategy to accelerate the development of AI devices for the home, LG has developed its own artificial intelligence chip (AI Chip) with proprietary LG Neural Engine to better mimic the neural network of the human brain to greatly improve the processing of deep learning algorithms.
The AI Chip incorporates visual intelligence to better recognize and distinguish space, location, objects and users while voice intelligence accurately recognizes voice and noise characteristics while product intelligence enhances the capabilities of the device by detecting physical and chemical changes in the environment. The chip also makes it possible to implement customized AI services by processing and learning from video and audio data in order to enhance recognition of the user’s emotions and behaviors and the situational context.
Products utilizing the LG AI Chip take advantage of the On-Device AI to operate even without a network connection. What’s more, LG’s AI Chip employs a powerful security engine to better protect personal data from external hacking. Processing that does not require high security is designed to run in a general zone and jobs that require higher security run in a separate hardware-implemented security zone.
LG’s AI Chip is designed to enhance the recognition performance in the products it powers such as an advanced image recognition engine for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). For example, its powerful image processing function corrects for distortion caused by wide angle lenses and generates brighter and clearer images in dark environments. LG Electronics plans to include the new AI Chip in future robot vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerator and even air conditioners. In addition, LG will expand the reach of its artificial intelligence solutions through collaborations with outside companies, universities and research laboratories.
“Our AI Chip is designed to provide optimized artificial intelligence solutions for future LG products,” said I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. “This will further enhance the three key pillars of our artificial intelligence strategy – evolve, connect and open – and provide customers with an improved experience for a better life.”

LG COMMITS TO CARBON NEUTRALITY BY 2030
Company Plans Further Reductions in Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Expansion of Carbon Offset Projects LG logo
SEOUL:- LG Electronics (LG) has launched its aggressive Zero Carbon 2030 initiative, committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its global operations within 12 years.
In line with its larger sustainable business strategy, LG will look to reduce carbon emissions from its global operations by 50 percent compared to a 2017 baseline by implementing various carbon reduction and renewable energy initiatives. This effort will help bring LG closer to reaching its ultimate goal of carbon neutrality, achieving a net-zero carbon emissions footprint by balancing carbon emissions with carbon removal.
Through a variety of strategic initiatives, the company will cut carbon emissions across its global production sites from nearly 2 million tons recorded in 2017 to 960,000 tons by the end of 2030. LG is looking to expand its high-efficiency facilities and technologies targeting greenhouse gas reduction, alleviating the creation of carbon emissions during the production process.
LG will expand renewable energy installations using solar energy products and actively utilize its own business-to-business technology solutions such as high-efficiency chillers and Energy Management Systems (EMS) to reduce carbon emissions.
Additionally, through the expansion of its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, LG plans to secure Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits. Such forward-thinking CDM initiatives promote clean development in emerging nations by allowing businesses with carbon reduction commitments to implement emissions reduction projects in developing countries using their own capital and technologies. Such projects are critical to earning CER credits, which are issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) after a thorough evaluation process.
As the first household appliance manufacturer to acquire CER credits in 2015, LG paved the way by utilizing highly efficient home appliances and cementing its status as a pioneering environmentally-conscious company. By the end of 2018, LG had secured a total of 340,000 tons of CER through its CDM initiatives.
“Our commitment to combating global climate change is unwavering. LG’s progressive steps in reducing carbon emissions at workplaces the world over, with many more UN CDM projects in the works, exemplify the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability leadership,” said Lee Young-jae, vice president of environmental safety at LG Electronics.

CPHGC Unit 2 Synchronized with the National Grid Commercial Operations in August 2019
CPHGC Unit 2 Synchronized with the National Grid Commercial Operations in August 2019
KARACHI, 29 May: The 660MW Unit 2 of the China Power Hub Generation Company (Pvt.) Ltd. 2 x 660 MW coal-fired power plant was successfully synchronized with the national grid of Pakistan on May 28, 2019 as per schedule. The synchronization, an important milestone towards the commercial operations of the Power Plant, comes exactly 5 months to the day when Unit 1 of the Project was synchronized, on December 28, 2018.
Both the Units of CPHGC are now providing electricity to the Pakistan national grid on pre-commissioning trial basis. Synchronization of Unit 2 was achieved within the agreed technical parameters laying the foundation for future commercial operations of the Project which is planned to start in August 2019.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Zhao Yonggang, CEO, China Power Hub Generation Company (Pvt.) Ltd. congratulated the CPHGC team, emphasizing the achievement of synchronization of Unit 2 and other ‘one-time’ milestones was the result of the hard work of Pakistani and Chinese employees who are working in harmony to bring success to the Project.
“China Power Hub Generation Company (Pvt.) Ltd. is a priority project under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor and is also the first overseas thermal power project developed by SPIC under the Belt & Road Initiative,” said Mr. Yonggang.
Located in Hub, Balochistan, the CPHGC Project is a Joint Venture Company between CPIH (the Chinese state-owned company) that owns 74% and HUBCO that owns 26%. The Project despite the much higher cost, has adopted supercritical technology for environment protection. This technology requires reduced coal consumption and has lower carbon emissions thus improving its energy-conserving and environment protecting features.
The USD 2 billion Project includes a power plant and a dedicated coal Jetty. During commercial operations, the project will provide 9 billion kWh electricity to the national grid every year which will meet the electricity needs of 4 million households in Pakistan.
The CPHGC 2 x 660MW Coal-Fired Power Project officially had its ground breaking on March 21, 2017 and it is on track to be commercially operational in August 2019 that will help to alleviate a substantial part of electricity shortage in Pakistan and promote local social and economic development.

ZapBuddy Finally Launches on Android: And that is great news for Privacy Conscious Users.
ZapBuddy Finally Launches on Android: And that is great news for Privacy Conscious Users.
It has been almost a year since we covered the upcoming chat startup- zapbuddy. We liked it for a number of reasons mainly because there hasn’t been something new and good in the highly competitive world of chat apps. The world of Chat Apps has been a very limited one with many new entrants failing to make an impact and rise up to the big players. This startup felt one of the best challenger to the main stream apps, and that is a feat that very few apps have achieved so far.
We really liked it and were impressed by the hard work done by the team, given the fact they were working with jobs with the team divided between Melbourne and Islamabad. It was an extraordinary story and it was exciting to see the next garage success story happening before us. How a small team manages to work between different countries and jobs yet still strives to work on new features is truly amazing. Most exciting part was that unlike many apps with no adds, data capitalization was not a part of their business plan and that is good to know considering the impact of such strategies around the globe. The team also had patents focused around privacy and that shows the strategic direction of the company.
The app was amazing, but with one big caveat, there was no android version. Now finally the team has launched their android version and we can get to try the app on both platforms.
The flow in android takes very little getting used to and is neatly laid out. As the team pointed out, one of the most difficult tasks was to make it look simple and easy. As we mentioned earlier as well, the team has patented many new features with the focus on privacy. However, one of the best surprise has been the lock screen. Something we did not expect to catch on, but with whatsapp offering a similar feature, it feels like this is here to stay.
What we love the most- Privacy Control
The most simple yet extremely useful feature has been the privacy control for display image and location and frankly this is the feature we can see ourselves using the most. The display image can now be set for different users depending weather they are in your phone book or not and even if they are, you can also manually set a different image specifically for them. This is something we haven’t seen in any other app and in today’s world and given the complexity around privacy concerns specifically in our region, this can be a handy feature for users who may have their display images ending up seen by the users they may not want to show to.
Similar treatment has been done with the locations as well.
WHATS DIFFERENT
AR Location
The AR location is fun to begin with and we can locate places easily around. Whilst it is not beneficial for places we already know about, it can come in handy when navigating new places. This is a fun new feature which seems to be pretty basic at the moment but has a lot of development potential in our opinion.
Group Features
Group Chats are almost what we have accustomed ourselves to, however the party piece is the function which lets users have the option to join or decline BEFORE becoming a part of a group. This is a feature which is beneficial for users like us whose number is in a lot of blogging circles and get added into many new groups almost on daily basis and feel bad about leaving the group and not hurting the people who have added me.
Smart Notifications
Along the same set of problems is another feature that I personally can use a lot is the “exceptions”. Keeping all the groups quite and creating an exception for selected group like family and team is very useful instead of manually having to silence many number of groups Im already a part of and that can be a daunting exercise.
Finally, we get to try our hands on Audio and Video calling and it has left us impressed. The quality is at par with the likes of whatsapp and that is a big goal to achieve. We haven’t seen that many apps which have successfully delivered the clarity and for that we would give them thumbs up.
WHATS STILL MISSING
Even though the team has done a great job in successfully creating a very very good chat app that we are happy to see, there are a couple of things we feel still need to be done. For example ability to reply to a specific message is something we have dearly missed in this app. Furthermore, ability to recall the message is also something which needs to be there before making it a full fledged alternative to the established apps. The graphics still feel more refinement here and there but overall satisfactory.
In summary, the long awaited android version has proven to be worth the wait as we have loved the smooth interface, the calling quality, simplicity of adapting and getting used to the new features and new ideas that are honestly benefiting to every day usage.
Its been fun using the app and quite frankly can see ourselves using it in the long run. The issues we mentioned need to be addressed and hopefully more speedily now. The basics are good to begin with, but there is still work to be done to truly able to rise up to the established competition. For now, we are glad to be observing one of the best challenges we have seen so far to the likes of whatsapp, FB messenger and Line.

Arif Naqvi released after arranging record £15m cash bail - Geo News
“Arif Naqvi is free. He has been released to his home after meeting all court conditions," says source/ file photo
LONDON: Abraaj Group founder Arif Naqvi has been released on bail after arranging a payment of £15 million – the largest security ever ordered in the UK’s judicial history.
A source at the Westminster Magistrates Court confirmed to Geo News that the Pakistani businessman and philanthropist has been released from Wandsworth Prison after £15 million in cash was deposited with the court - which took over three weeks to raise since the decision granting him bail in early May.
A court source said: “Arif Naqvi is free. He has been released to his home after meeting all the conditions imposed by the Court, including the payment of security.
Naqvi’s bail application was also supported by three sureties, who offered an additional GBP 650,000 in surety in support of his bail.
The Abraaj founder, 58, was arrested at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday 10 April by officers from the Met’s Extradition Unit on behalf of the US authorities.
Naqvi was granted conditional bail at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which was appealed, unsuccessfully, by the US Government. Justice Supperstone had ruled that the US Government, had not provided enough evidence to demonstrate that Naqvi, despite the allegations made against him by the US Government, was at risk of failing to surrender to the court or that he would violate any conditions of bail – hence, not deemed a flight risk.
It was accepted by the US government that Naqvi was a man of good character with ties to the UK. The judge also dismissed any suggestion that Naqvi could access a private jet, stating that there was no evidence to back up the claim or that he would be assisted to flee the UK by any Pakistani official, as had been implied.
Two of Naqvi’s associates – senior Abraaj executives Mustafa Abdel-Wadood in Manhattan and Sev Vettivetpillai in London – are already out on bail. Arif Naqvi had denied any wrongdoing maintaining his innocence.
Throughout since the Abraaj scandal broke out, Naqvi has been cooperating extensively with all parties focused on maximising creditor recoveries of the Abraaj Group, which was at its peak the largest private equity firm in emerging markets with assets under management of US$14 billion, known for its pioneering style of investing and helping grow companies, which resulted in billions of dollars in value that its investors made in profit.
A number of these investments were ground breaking in emerging markets and represent some of the biggest companies that have contributed to the emerging market boom.
Naqvi’s lawyers have stated that the US government was not being truthful in alleging that Naqvi took money out for his personal benefit at the expense of the group was incorrect where through each hearing their numbers changed given the rebuttals by Naqvi’s lawyers. The legal team has maintained before the court that any monies which Naqvi had taken out were legally entitled to him through his contractual arrangements with the company, and specifically also pointed out that no monies were moved from funds to Naqvi’s direct personal benefit directly from the funds – and the US allegations were in fact wrong, incorrect and misleading.
