PM urges Chinese company to set up waste-to-energy plant in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): Prime Minister Imran Khan has reiterated his commitment to providing all possible facilities to the investors in undertaking profitable business ventures in Pakistan.

Talking to a delegation of the China Power Hub Generation Company, led by its Chief Executive Officer Zhao Yonggang, the PM said that the government’s new energy policy focuses on the promotion of alternative and renewable energy sources.

He also encouraged the Chinese company to set up a waste-to-energy plant in Pakistan.

On the occasion, the CPHGC chief executive officer apprised the prime minister about the progress made so far on an important CPEC project; the installation of a 1,320 megawatts power plant in Hub, Balochistan.

He was informed that the project’s first state-of-the-art and environment-friendly unit has successfully been synchronized with the national grid.

The CPHGC chief acknowledged the facilitation provided by the Pakistani government that led to the timely commissioning of the project.

It is pertinent to mention that the government, ever since coming into power, has been focused on facilitating the investors by improving the country’s ‘ease of doing business’ ranking.

Among 190 economies, Pakistan ranks at 136, according to the World Bank report on ease of doing business.

However, despite the efforts, the total foreign investment plunged by 22 per cent in the first month of this fiscal year (July FY20).

The total investment fell to $107.2 million during July, as compared to $136.8 million recorded in same month of the previous year.

According to analysts, this could possibly be a worrying sign for the government which has been met with a severe shortage of dollars since coming into power, thanks to the massive current account deficit.

Meanwhile, the net foreign direct investment (FDI) of $73.4 million during the period under review was 57.79pc less than $173.9 million recorded on the July FY19. On the other hand, portfolio investment was down 19.66pc to $33.9 million, as against a net outflow of $42.2 million in July last year.

FY19 proved to be a dismal year for inflows, as annual FDI dipped 61pc to a modest $1.251 billion, down from $3.23 billion in FY18.

Deutsche Bank to transfer up to 800 to BNP in prime brokerage deal: Source (Reuters)

FRANKFURT/PARIS (Reuters) - A deal in the works for BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) to assume the prime brokerage operations of Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) will involve the transfer of up to 800 people, a person with knowledge of the matter said on Friday.

Deutsche Bank said in July it had struck a preliminary agreement with BNP covering the business that serves hedge funds as part of its 7.4 billion euro ($8.2 billion) overhaul, but details on personnel and the timing of any final deal were being hammered out.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agreement may be finalised in coming weeks, confirming a report in the Financial Times.

BNP and Deutsche Bank declined to comment.

Deutsche Bank, which has said it aimed to conclude the effort this year, is eager to clinch a deal sooner rather than later to “provide continuity of service” to its clients.

Some clients have already left Deutsche in the meantime and Barclays (BARC.L) is looking to take on a $20 billion portion of Deutsche’s prime brokerage business, sources told Reuters last month.

Hedge fund clients have balances of close to $200 billion with Deutsche.

Most of the staff affected are based in London and New York. A successful deal with BNP will mean Deutsche won’t have to pay redundancy for those individuals as it seeks to shed around 18,000 from its payroll globally.

Yes, that’s right. The sales reached to a point that eventually all stocks of the TECNO Spark Go were sold out. Since users of the phone across social media were praising the phone for having such brilliant specs at quite an affordable price, it became tough for others to not go and purchase the phone.
Another reason for everyone to buy this phone was that the Spark Go price was reduced to half from 16-21st August at 2:00 PM and exact 8:00 PM for first 5 customers. Due to this, a wide number of people bought the phone online. TECNO even offered gifts to people who purchased the Spark Go such as Power Banks, and water bottles.

As soon as the phone was released online, the phone sold 1000 units within 3 minutes. This clearly reflects that the users were waiting for the phone to become available so that they do not miss out on this opportunity to own a phone with amazing specs and a reasonable price tag.

Spark Go comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage and is 4G enabled which gives faster internet connectivity. The phone has a 6.2” Dot Notch Display and has an 8MP rear and 5MP front camera. The Spark Go also ensures faster processing speed and less lag with its 2.0 Ghz Quad Core processor and MediaTek Helio A22 chipset.

Tecno Expected to Launch Camon 12 Air in 19,999 with Amazing Features!

A new mid ranger by TECNO, Camon 12 Air, packed with some incredibly powerful features, is arriving in the local market pretty soon as suggested by some rumors. The rumors of this upcoming phone emerged right after the successful launch of company’s phone, Spark Go.

TECNO Camon series have already been praised by a lot of tech enthusiasts for their advanced cameras that capture crystal clear and high definition images. It is quite evident that their upcoming Camon 12 Air will keep up with the tradition. So, selfie fanatics can now take a sigh of relief as they can now take great pictures.
And aspiring photographers can also finally enjoy a budget-friendly phone that offers top-notch camera quality.

According to leaked design, the phone will feature 6.5inch hole screen which is the latest trend in the market. Further rumors suggest that Face Unlock feature will also be present in this phone for enhanced security.

A leaked image circulating on the internet shows that the smartphone will feature triple camera setup.
This was inevitable owing to the fact that this series has its major focus placed on remarkable camera quality. Rumors further reveal that this new addition to company’s Camon series will have powerful battery of 4000 mAh so, users won’t have to worry about charging the phones every now and then. Camon 12 Air is also rumored to feature latest Android Operating system. Some sources have also claimed that the phone will feature 4GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage.

A lot of tech experts consider TECNO to be growing its presence substantially in Pakistan’s market. The rapid growth is due to company’s dedication towards bringing latest handsets that would not cost you a fortune.

If this smartphone manufacturer keeps moving with the same pace and maintains its reputation of making premium quality handsets, it wouldn’t take long for TECNO to achieve the status of top company in smartphone category regionally.

The date of launch is still unknown but hopefully the phone will be launched in the upcoming two months. The price is suggested to be somewhere around 20,000 PKR. Latest features and such economical price is a combo very hard to find these days. TECNO has already established its manufacturing unit in one of Pakistan’s metropolitan cities, Karachi and this fact clearly reflects that the demand of TECNO smartphones is quite high.

ISLAMABAD (APP): The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and USAID’s Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA) jointly organised a one-day stakeholders’ workshop on Pakistan Single Window (PSW).

The objective of the workshop was to encourage stakeholders to participate in making trade-related processes more efficient, effective and transparent, in line with globally-accepted practices as per the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

PSW is a key trade facilitation tool that helps the countries improve their efficiencies in the area of customs clearance. PSW is, therefore, one of the most important reforms needed to improve Pakistan’s trade competitiveness and ultimately stimulate its economic growth.

The conference brought together more than 70 participants from the public and private sector, including government officials from key trade regulators, members of various chambers of commerce, trade bodies and business associations, and representatives of the international donor community collaborating with FBR on various aspects of the PSW.

Speaking on the occasion, Customs Member Jawwad Owais Agha said, “Pakistan Single Window is the most significant cross-border trade facilitation initiative undertaken by the government.

“In order to successfully implement this programme, Pakistan Customs has not only deployed capable resources but has also allocated a part of the GD (goods declaration) fee to fast-track the in-house development and early deployment of the PSW.

“We hope that with continued support from participating government departments and development partners, Pakistan Customs will be able to implement this programme in time.”

USAID’s Acting Director for Office of Economic Growth and Agriculture Malick Haidara said, “Today’s workshop is a continuation of our collaborative efforts with Pakistan Customs and FBR to enhance the understanding and capacity of the stakeholders to manage the complex reforms resulting from PSW implementation.”

USAID’s PREIA is providing active technical assistance to the PSW initiative since its inception in order to ensure the development and early deployment of the PSW system.

Chitral - Uchal,  a festival of shepherds and farmers of the Kalash tribe

The kalash tribe is one of those tribes who have the least population of just 3,500 people. They reside in three valleys ramboor, bamborit and barir. Though initially they were scattered in 12 valleys of Kalash district Chitral of KPK but with the passage of time they were pushed in these three valleys. Their mysterious and wonderful culture attracts the people of world towards these valleys that is why at the time of any Kalash festival the number of police and agencies is greater than the visitors.

Many anthropologists and archaeologists are of the opinion that they are the decedents of Alexander the Great but during the excavation and exploration of Chitral, they come to know that they are residing here before Alexander the Great. Many of their practices and rituals are similar to the ancient Hinduism. Some of their deities who are worshiped in Kalash tribe are similar to the Hindu god and goddess like Mahadev in Hinduism is called Mahandeo in Kalash tribe. Many of their practices and customs are like the old Greek people rather they claim that they are the offspring of Greek people but unfortunately recent DNA testing could not connect these people with the Greek soldiers. But in spite of this their way of preparing wine, their architecture , jewellery and dress is resembling with the Greeks, even many Greek words are noticed in their language. The culture, dress, language and practices are still wondering the world.

The Kalash tribe loves nature and the festivals they celebrate are associated with seasons. In the month of May, they celebrate the Joshi Festival to welcome the spring season in the valleys. In the month of August, they celebrate Uchal to welcome summer and thank God for the harvest and livestock.

In December they celebrate a winter festival called Choo-moss.

Before the Uchal Festival the Kalash tribe celebrates the Rut-Nut. The rut-nut lasts for two months this is a dancing festival and it closes the girls and boys of the tribe to create relations and it also gives the chance to understand each other. The night of 19 and 20 August is called jay jayyaklawat.

During the dance at gree or at some other place new couples can be observed. There is no restriction to choose the life partner in the festival of Kalash people. But it’s difficult to understand a girl or boy fully in a short meeting during the festival. So the rut-nut and others festivals given them chance to meet each other. The Kalash society gives equal chances to girls as given to boys in every field of life either its education, life partner selection and other matters of the life even a woman has free will after the marriage if she wants to marry some other person, the other person has to pay the double expenses of marriage to the first husband. After the payment the first husband leaves the girl for second person to be marry.

After finishing the rut-nut the next day Uchal Festival is celebrated. The main theme of the festival is to thanking the god for those who remained safe during the entire season in the valleys with their livestock and for collection of dairy products. Secondly the Uchal Festival is celebrated by the farmers to thanking god for the crops/ harvesting.

Livestock is everything of many of Kalash people. Almost each family has livestock though the number of sheep and goat is different. So for the livestock fodder they have to stay in open valleys for several weeks. From each family one has to be stay with livestock in the valleys for three-four weeks then he is replaced with another person of family. This loop continuous even after the Uchal Festival. This culture is very much similar to the Cholistani shepherds who also stay with their livestock in the open desert for several weeks and after two or three weeks one member of their family replace him.

During their stay in valleys with the livestock they have to manage everything. They take vegetables, flour and other things with them as per their need. They make a temporary shelter for their animals and for him as well to protect from animals. Sometime they make a group with other shepherds for staying, cooking and managing fodder. It also helps them to reduce the loneliness. The shepherds of Kalash prepare many dairy products during their stay in the valleys with their livestock. They prepare lassi, cheese, yogurt, butter and other dairy products. The shepherds return home after three-four months with the big quantity of dairy products.

The Uchal Festival is celebrated for the successful return of the shepherds with their livestock and for the harvest. An interesting ceremony is organised for the shepherds. Many of the family members from each village/home stay on the way holding home prepared necklace to wear them for the honour and blessing. The necklaces are prepared with the dry apricot, grapes and walnut etc. The shepherds are warmly welcome in the tribe. They thank god for their safety and security in the entire stay in the valley. They also thank god for the collected dairy products during the stay.

First of all with all the villagers they go to Maloosh (worship place) and thank the diety for everything. Only the males of family gathers here.

Theqazi( spiritual leader) leads the procession of people. They do prayer for protection, prosperity and new season. They sacrifice a goat if qazi suggests for this otherwise only prayer is made. After the prayer they distribute the dairy products among all the tribal. Some of them eat the dairy products over there, they also distribute dairy products for the stay at home females. They distribute the dairy products among neighbours especially who do not have their own livestock. At this time the male of tribe do dance in the circle with joy and happiness.

They also prepare small chapatti on this festival and these chappatis with the butter are placed in the graveyards for their deads. This practice is like the Hindus when on the kriakarm they place small chapatis for the birds and animals to please the deity. All the tribal also visit the Mahandeo for worship and pray. After that they reach to the gree (dancing place). They dance and sing traditional songs to thank the god for everything for the harvesting, for the safety and security of their people and livestock from animals, for the new summer season for this festival as well.

The Kalash boys and girls enter the gree with colourful dresses and amazing jewellery. Hundreds of cameras move to take the best shots. Seeing these attractive and alluring fairy like ladies in their colourful dresses and worth watching jewellery, enhance the curiosity of the locald and international visitors.

The soft shaking bodies on drum beats give the message of summer. Sometimes, there is a zaftig style of serpentine dance and at times, nymphs dancing in chorus appear happy and delightful of summer. There are charming young men, children and elders of the tribe who also dance on the event.

This is the Kalasha way to thank God. During this dance, many new couples decide to start a new life.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Sees Tech and Progressive Policies as Key Factors for Enabling Growth

A panel discussion on how the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is leading amongst all other provinces towards a progressive regulatory framework for Online Marketplaces such as Careem was held in its headquarters in Dubai.

The panel included Taimur Jhagra, Minister Finance, KP and Senior Leaders from Careem including Mudassir Sheikha, Co-Founder and CEO, Junaid Iqbal, MD Careem Pay, and Zeeshan Hasib Baig, General Manager Pakistan.

The discussion revolved around recent progressive measures taken by the Finance Minister and KP’s cabinet for understanding the business model of Online Marketplace platforms which have an immense potential to create jobs in Pakistan.

The province of KP despite facing the repercussions of the ‘War on Terror’ for over a decade, has been extremely progressive in introducing the most favorable regulatory framework for the industry out of the four provinces.

This was achieved through the introduction of a subcategory of ride-hailing and a minimal tax rate of 2% on platform’s share giving exemptions to Independent Service providers such as Captains. This has allowed for unhampered growth of the industry in KP with the creation of thousands of new jobs, attracting further investment in the province.

The Minister presented his vision for KP to recognize it as the province that helps the country move into the digital future by creating an environment that encourages the use of technology to improve lives.

The Minister also took questions from the Captains in Dubai, as a significant number of them are overseas Pakistanis who wished to return to their homeland. Reassuring them that the Government is taking all possible steps to assist Pakistanis abroad including a facilitation desk at the Careem Office in Dubai that will help find income opportunities for Captains wanting to move to Pakistan.

Addressing the Captains and senior leadership, Provincial Minister for Finance commented:-
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is committed to taking the lead in developing favorable policies to encourage innovation in the province. By introducing the progressive regulatory framework for Online Marketplaces and ride-hailing platforms, we have laid the foundation for an enabling business environment that will lead us to increased economic activity along with increased job opportunities.

Commenting on the occasion Mudassir Sheikha, Co-Founder and CEO of Careem said:- Technology is playing a key role in the creation of economic opportunity in Pakistan. Careem is passionately committed to bringing innovative technology solutions to the country and creating income opportunities through the sharing economy.

Careem is also working on another project in collaboration with the Government of KP to bring Rescue 1122 Ambulance Services in Peshawar on the Careem platform to improve the ambulance response time in the city and ensure that precious lives can be saved.
