Leading smartphone vendor charts plans to launch more top-end and affordable handsets for early adopters
At a much-anticipated event in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi Corp showcased the culmination of its years of design and engineering effort with Mi MIX Alpha.
The 5G-powered concept phone is what Lei Jun, founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said future 5G smartphones will look like. Priced from 19,999 yuan ($2,800), the MIX Alpha, is the company's latest endeavor to transcend technological boundaries.
It has an innovative surround screen with a screen-to-body ratio of more than 180.6 percent. That is to say, when Mi MIX Alpha lights up - the front, side, and back of the phone are almost entirely covered by displays, except for where the cameras are located.
At the same launch event, Xiaomi, the world's fourth-largest smartphone vendor, also demonstrated the most affordable 5G handset in China so far: the Mi 9 Pro 5G with a starting price of just 3,699 yuan.
The price is about 2,000 yuan to 3,000 yuan lower than 5G alternatives unveiled by domestic rivals such as Huawei Technologies Co and foreign competitors such as Samsung Electronics Co, and falls in the same price range as some of the 4G handsets currently selling in the market.
The sharp divergences between the prices of Xiaomi's two 5G smartphone models underline the company's strategy of stepping up its push in two directions.
The first step is to revive a market mired in an innovation lull with cutting-edge and premium designs, and the other is to establish a beachhead in the market with an affordable device to woo as many early-adopters as possible.
It also underscores the mounting competition in China, the world's largest smartphone market which has been declining for months in terms of shipments. In fact, Xiaomi's double-edge strategy has been adopted by another Chinese smartphone vendor Vivo. It has also come up with two 5G models targeting both premium and affordable ranges.
So far, 11 5G smartphone models, from Huawei, Samsung, Vivo, ZTE and China Mobile, have been launched in China in August and September. More are scheduled to come in the following months.
Pinning hopes on the new-generation devices to revitalize the market, Chinese smartphone makers are scrambling to woo early adopters and hope to gain a first-mover advantage in the global 5G battle.
The country granted licenses for commercial use of the new-generation wireless technology on June 6.In July, 72,000 units of 5G smartphones were shipped in China, data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed.
According to a survey by Citibank, 87 percent of the Chinese consumers indicated they might or will buy a 5G phone this year.
Chinese companies' eagerness to embrace 5G is in sharp contrast to Apple Inc. The US tech giant did not include 5G connectivity with its latest iPhones unveiled in early September.
LG Files IP Lawsuit against Arçelik A.Ş. and Related Home Appliance Companies
LG Responds Aggressively to Unauthorized Use of Its Patented Freezer Door-Ice Making Technology
Karachi / SEOUL, Oct *, 2019 :- LG Electronics Inc. (LG) has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Turkish-based home appliance manufacturer Arçelik A.Ş. and its German affiliates Beko Deutschland GmbH and Grundig Intermedia GmbH in The Munich (Ger.) District Court I. The suits center on the unlicensed implementation of LG’s freezer door-ice making technology featured in a number of the companies’ refrigerators sold in Europe. The three companies are all affiliates of Turkey’s Koç Holding A.Ş., whose home appliances are available mainly in Turkey and major European markets.
Legal action became LG’s final option after negotiations with Arçelik A.Ş., Beko Deutschland GmbH’s and Grundig Intermedia GmbH’s parent company, failed to make headway. LG’s freezer door-ice making technology was originally developed by LG for its Side-by-Side refrigerator models and is included in a portfolio of more than 400 patents specifically relating to door-ice making technology. LG’s patented door-ice making technology efficiently utilizes the storage space of the freezer to take up less room than a conventional ice maker and frees up more space for food storage. In June of this year, LG licensed its patented door-ice making technology for French-door refrigerators to Haier-owned GE Appliances.
“We continue to proactively protect our intellectual property and will respond vigorously to the unauthorized use of our patented technologies,” said Jeon Saeng-gyu, executive vice president of LG’s Intellectual Property Center. “As international competition over innovation increases, it is more important than ever that we protect our investments in research and development.”

AKDN Digital Health Resource Centre helped develop the Paigham-e-Sehat application to support the project
‘Paigham-e-Sehat’
Just by making use of phone as a medium, couching the need for immunization within the target's frame of reference and being all-time available to check feedback, a study carried out by researchers from Aga Khan University (AKU) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) has found that automated messages, delivered through interactive voice response (IVR) system, helped achieve a 26 percent increase in vaccine coverage in underserved areas of Sindh. Juxtaposed with continuing problems besetting the anti-polio campaigns in some areas the AKU-UBC success is indeed quite heartening. The exercise under the rubric of "Paigham-e-Sehat" comprised a randomized controlled trial spanning 3,300 households in rural and urban areas of the province. Sindh has one of the lowest rates of routine immunization with seven out of 10 children at risk of contracting preventable, and often fatal, diseases. But equally amazing is the fact that 97 percent of the province's population owns mobile phones, and thus reachable. The messages through IVR system were in consonance with socio-cultural and religious values of the target audience. The parents, be they rich or poor, urban or rural, educated or uneducated, would like their children to be protected against diseases, but as for the anti-dote they need to be convinced of its positive result. And that is possible only if your message aptly befits their frame of reference.
A thinking mind can help society in ways that all other inputs do not. By using mobile phone medium for communication, talking to the target audience in his/her socio-cultural and religious frame of reference, the AKU-UBC initiative has set an example for others who too are engaged in similar pursuits. This online application, developed by Aga Khan Development Network's Digital Health Resource, helped track the response to each intervention. This, in turn, helped verify if infants were immunized at the 14-week stage through follow-up calls and a visit at 20 weeks of age. Since Pakistan suffers from high rate of illiteracy reaching people by phone is the best bet - there may not be as many books in national libraries as mobile phones with people. And also, the written word is not the only means of mass communication; contact through mobile phones is not only easier it also offers retreat for one-to-one conversation. This exercise tends to generate "novel insights into the value of voice messages which is an innovative medium for health awareness," says Dr Momin Kazi, an assistant professor in paediatrics at the Aga Khan University. According to him, the study's findings are particularly useful in "contexts where literacy is a challenge, where a variety of local languages and dialects are present or where users have trouble using SMS". Strangely, and perhaps sickeningly, while nearly every university in Pakistan has a mass communication department and books by mass media savants like Marshall McLuhan and Wilbur Schramm sit on their shelves there is hardly a practical use of this body of knowledge.

Land `encroached` upon by Sharifs 37 years ago retrieved - via Dawn
Dawn - By Zulqernain Tahir | 9/29/2019
LAHORE: The Punjab AntiCorruption Establishment (ACE) has retrieved 36 kanals of land allegedly encroached upon by the Sharif family`s mills in Sahiwal some 37 years ago.
According to ACE, Ittefaq Sugar Mills had encroached upon an area of state land measuring 36 kanals and made part of it in1982. However, it (mills) had shifted its machinery to Rahim Yar Khan to set up another sugar mills which was lately stopped by the Supreme Court.
After retrieving the land on Saturday in collaboration with the Sahiwal deputy commissioner, revenue and police officials, ACE chief Gohar Nafees ordered an inquiry into the matter directing to fix responsibility in this regard and receive `rent` from the mills owners for 37 years so the national exchequer`s loss could be compensated.
`The Sharif family members will soon be issued notices in this regard by the ACE to record their statements with regard to encroachment of state land,` anof ficial told Dawn.
He said upon receiving a source report in this regard the matter was taken up with the Pakpattan assistant commissioner and the revenue department that confirmed the encroachment on the state land by Ittef aq Sugar Mills.
`This move should not be seen as a political one as the ACE is showing zero tolerance against those who occupied state land, he said.
On Saturday, officials of the ACE, revenue and police visited the site. Of the 36 kanals of occupied land inside the mills, 16 kanals were found vacant and on the remaining area stores of sugar and a laboratory were built.
According to the official, the value of the land at the site was Rs22.5m. `No rent of the land has been paid since 1982 and its worth will be in billions,` he said.
At present, the official said, this mill was not functional as the Sharif family had shiftedits machinery to Rahim Yar Khan to set up a sugar mill there. `Although this mill in Sahiwal had not been functional for quite some time, its owners had the land possession,` he said.
When contacted, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said she was studying the issue and wouldoffer acommentlater.
Meanwhile, the ACE may again quiz former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat jail regarding a three-decade-old case pertaining to alleged illegal allotment of land belonging to Baba Farid shrine in Pakpattan.
A four-member ACE team about two months ago had recorded Mr Sharif`s statement in this case.
Mr Sharif, however, couldn`t give a satisfactory reply to the ACE, saying how could he remember anything so old.
According to sources, when the ACE team sought a reply on the allegation that he being chief minister of Punjab in 1986 had allotted the land in violation of the court order, Mr Sharif said: `It is an over 30-yearold case and I do not remember anything about this. My legal team will give a reply in this regard.
A joint investigation team (JIT) earlier this year had recommended initiation of criminal proceedings against several individuals, including then Punjab chief minister Nawaz Sharif, for withdrawing a Dec 17, 1969, notification and allotting 14,394 kanals land of Auqaf around the shrine to Dewan Ghulam Qutab in 1986, allegedly in violation of a Lahore High Court (LHC) order.
Mr Sharif is serving a seven-year imprisonment in the Al Azizia Mills case.

Shell Pakistan And CARE Foundation Join Hands To Inculcate Road Safety Awareness Amongst School Children
As per the World Health Organization’s Road Safety Report, ‘Road Traffic Injuries (RTI)’ is the 8th leading cause of deaths across the world and the cost of road traffic injuries account for 3% of GDP’s for developing countries like Pakistan.
Shell believes it can play a role in the vision set out by the National Road Safety Strategy 2018-2030 “to create a safe and sustainable road network across Pakistan as part of the Government’s commitment to bring better quality of life to the people of the country”.
Road safety education in schools is one potential way of reducing the number of deaths or injuries amongst road users. It can play an important role in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of children and young people ensuring they become responsible drivers, passengers and pedestrians. To achieve this objective, a memorandum of understanding was signed with CARE Foundation in Lahore to inculcate road safety awareness amongst the future generation of our road users.
Shell Pakistan Limited is working towards incorporating Road Safety education in the government approved curriculum across the nation. CARE Foundation coming on-board this mission is the first step.
The agreement between CARE Foundation and Shell Pakistan Limited stipulates that the road safety book will form part of the curriculum for the schools of CARE Foundation in the coming school year for grade six and seven. The book, produced by Shell Pakistan for young minds; through content developers and publishers, is a narrative based learning, on observations of unsafe behaviors by people on the road.

“I hope that this partnership will raise the much needed awareness on road safety. Disorderly traffic is a serious risk to individuals commuting daily on the road. I believe that this initiative would have a tangible impact towards achieving the mission of making our roads safer.” said Seema Aziz, Chief Executive Officer, CARE Foundation at the event.
The long-term vision is to advocate road safety education and include as part of the curriculum of the country’s educational institutions, over the coming years.

Leading telecom carriers are stepping up 5G infrastructure construction activities to keep pace with the plan of rolling out 5G services in major Chinese cities by the end of this year.
China Mobile, one of the leading telecom firms, said it has already made deliveries of more than 30,000 5G base stations by Sept 15, covering 318 cities in the nation.
With this the firm has inched closer to its ambitious goal of building more than 50,000 5G base stations and launching 5G commercial services in over 50 cities by the end of this year. By 2020, China Mobile is planning to offer 5G services in all cities above the prefecture level in China.
"As the telecom operator with the largest network and customer base in the world, we will accelerate the development of 5G and establish our new "5G+" competitive advantages," Yang Jie, chairman of China Mobile, said in the company's interim annual report.
The next-generation high-speed 5G technology will be able to transmit data at least 10 times faster than the existing 4G system. In the 5G era, higher reliability and lower latency can be realized, making the internet of things more effective and enabling tasks that were impossible to execute in the 4G era, such as overseeing self-driving vehicles.
Last week, China Mobile and Beijing's Fangshan district announced that they would jointly build China's first road with full 5G coverage for autonomous driving tests, along with the first 5G-enabled autonomous driving demonstration area.

Xiang Ligang, director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance, a telecom industry association, said telecom firms are accelerating their pace of investment in 5G construction to gain traction in the upcoming 5G era.
"They are scrambling to develop 5G now. It's hard to see robust growth in the short term. But we will witness a significant jump in the next two to three years," Xiang said. "5G construction will bring operators opportunities and new revenue streams as well as drive the development of the whole industry."
Earlier this month, China Telecom and China Unicom, the country's second-and third-largest telecom operators, said they will jointly build and share the 5G network nationwide to reduce construction costs and improve efficiency.
The central government had in June granted 5G licenses to the three major telecom operators and the State-owned China Broadcasting Network Co Ltd. It has pushed for a fast rollout of the services across the nation, as it sees 5G development as a key strategy in the transformation and upgrade of traditional industries and for boosting the emerging digital economy.
China is set to become the world's largest 5G market by 2025, with 460 million 5G users, according to a forecast by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, an industry group.
The country's telecom carriers are set to spend 900 billion yuan to 1.5 trillion yuan ($126 billion to $211 billion) in total on 5G network construction from 2020 to 2025, according to a report from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
