President Donald Trump signs order limiting social media

WASHINGTON (AFP): The White House thumbed its nose at Twitter on Friday by reposting a President Donald Trump tweet that the social media giant had just taken the unprecedented step of hiding, because it violated the platform´s rules against "glorifying violence."

The tit-for-tat marked a new escalation in the row between Twitter and Trump, who has more than 80 million followers and uses tweets daily to announce policies, attack opponents and comment on breaking news.

Twitter concluded that Trump fell afoul of its policies with a late-night tweet on violent anti-police protests in Minneapolis, when he called protesters "THUGS" and warned of military intervention.

"When the looting starts, the shooting starts," Trump tweeted. Twitter said his words were "glorifying violence" and hid the post, although readers could still click through to get access.

In response, the official White House account called Twitter´s bluff by retweeting the same post. This time, Twitter responded by saying that while it violated its rules, the company "determined that it may be in the public's interest for the Tweet to remain accessible."

The White House later defended Trump´s tweet, saying, "The President did not glorify violence. He clearly condemned it." And Trump´s social media director and Twitter feed manager, Dan Scavino, had his own response.

"Twitter is full of shit -- more and more people are beginning to get it," he wrote on Twitter. The latest spat came a day after Trump signed an executive order in the Oval Office seeking to transform the way social media companies are regulated. That followed Trump´s fury over Twitter tagging two of his tweets with fact checks, which was also an unprecedented measure.

Trump claims that the platform, where he dwarfs the presence of his Democratic rival Joe Biden for the November presidential election, is biased against him.

One immediate result of the blow-up between the social media-savvy president and the high-profile company has been to knock the coronavirus pandemic and recently reached toll of 100,000 dead Americans out of the headlines.

It also ties in with one of Trump´s major reelection themes: that despite being a billionaire White House incumbent with a Republican majority in the Senate, he is an outsider fighting a left-wing establishment.

Trump´s executive order seeks to remove social media platforms´ decades-long freedom from liability for content posted. Instead of being allowed to self-regulate, this would treat the companies more like traditional publishers, open to government regulation and court challenges over false or harmful material.

Trump told reporters at the White House he acted because big tech firms "have had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter any form of communication between private citizens or large public audiences."

"We can´t let this continue to happen," Trump said. Ironically, his order could spur companies like Twitter to impose stricter lines for users, eventually curbing social media firebrands like Trump himself, who regularly goes online to insult people and support conspiracy theories.

How much will change in the near term is unclear, given the legal and political challenges facing Trump´s move. Critics say Trump has no authority to regulate private internet operators or change the law, known as Section 230, which backers say has allowed online platforms like Facebook and Twitter to flourish.

The American Civil Liberties Union called Trump´s order "a blatant and unconstitutional threat to punish social media companies that displease the president." Eric Goldman, director of the High-Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University, said the order was "more about political theater than about changing the law." The order "is not legally supportable -- it flies in the face of more than 900 court decisions," Goldman said.

Huawei Enterprise BG Maintain Growth Trend in Industrial Digitization

[Islamabad, May 30th, 2020] Due to the COVID-19 global outbreak, industry digitization has entered a new phase of explosive development —a sign of the market's strong resilience and its great potential for growth. Digitization can drive innovation in both government management models and business models of vertical industries, as well as boost production and service efficiency. With this in mind, what is the direction of digital transformation in various industries, and how should they transform? What advantages can Huawei bring in helping enterprise customers achieve business success? At the Huawei Global Analyst Summit 2020 (HAS 2020) on May 19, Huawei Enterprise Business Group shared its insights into industry trends and challenges it currently faces with global analysts and media. Huawei Enterprise Business Group will work with partners to explore the industry digitization market and help customers accelerate digitization and intelligence processes.

Due to external environmental changes, Huawei has great confidence to achieve its challenging new goals.Firstly, the development and unified application of new ICT technologies such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing has significantly accelerated the digital transformation in vertical industries. Secondly, due to the pandemic, governments and enterprises around the world have now realized that digital transformation is imperative. Therefore, the power and potential of a digital world is evident.

Mr. Qiu Heng, President of Global Marketing for Huawei's Enterprise BG, introduced the business performance and objectives of Huawei Enterprise BG in 2019 during his "Bring Digital to Every Organization" speech. With support from global customers and partners, Huawei Enterprise BG achieved a sales revenue of CNY 89.7 billion in 2019, 86% of which came from partner contribution. Huawei serves more than 50,000 enterprise customers worldwide. Furthermore, 228 of the Fortune Global 500, and 58 of the Fortune Global 100 have chosen Huawei and Huawei's partners to assist them in digital transformation. In Shenzhen alone, Huawei has helped more than 1800 enterprises implement digital transformation across finance, transportation, manufacturing, electric power, education, and healthcare. In the future, Huawei will continue to empower customers' business success by leading industrial digital transformation, driving campus and data center reforms, and developing cutting-edge star products.

Huawei has been promoting digitization in the transportation industry for 20 years. By deeply integrating 5G, AI, and ICT within the industry, Huawei has helped transportation customers improve safety, efficiency, and experience in all areas. Mr. Xiang Xi, Vice President of Huawei's Global Transportation BU, shared Huawei's experience in the transportation sector,"With the transportation industry becoming more integrated in the future, Huawei will continue to cooperate with ecosystem partners to build a unified comprehensive transportation system by focusing on 'One ID for Travel, One Order for Logistics, and One Brain for Operations and Supervision'."

The digital transformation of the financial services industry strives to be "fully digital, fully intelligent, and fully open". Due to the pandemic, the financial services industry has never been more confident and determined to implement digital operations. In addition, the financial services industry has demonstrated its advantages and value in conducting digital operations with new technologies. Mr. Vincent Chen, CTO of Huawei's Global Financial Services BU, said that Huawei will continue to leverage its innovative technology and leading practices in ICT infrastructure to help financial institutions execute business strategies such as inclusive finance, as well as data-driven business innovation and open banking in order to deliver stable, secure and agile financial services.

The energy industry is facing challenges such as energy transformation, low-carbon needs, energy security, and friendly interaction in energy consumption. Mr. Xia Wenbo, Chief Digital Transformation Officer of Huawei EBG Global Energy Industry, believes that these challenges will accelerate the transformation and upgrade of the electric power industry.
"Huawei will work with customers in the electric power industry to promote the application of cloud computing, big data, 5G, and AI technologies in the industry, thereby ensuring secure and stable running of the power grid, supporting large-scale new energy access, and improving operational efficiency. In addition, this will help develop new services and accelerate the industry's digital transformation,"
said Xia.

In the future, Huawei will build the foundation for digital China and the core for a digital world based on "New Connectivity, New Computing, New Platforms, and New Ecosystems".

Britain calls for 5G club of nations to cut out Huawei the leader in 5G technology

LONDON (AFP): Britain said on Friday it was pushing the United States to form a club of 10 nations that could develop its own 5G technology and reduce dependence on China’s technology giant Huawei.

The issue is expected to feature at a G7 summit that US President Donald Trump will host next month against the backdrop of a fierce confrontation with China that has been exacerbated by a global blame game over the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Britain has allowed the Chinese global leader in 5G technology to build up to 35 per cent of the infrastructure necessary to roll out its new speedy data network.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson was reported by The Telegraph newspaper last week to have instructed officials to draw up plans to cut Huawei out of the network by 2023 as relations with China sour.

The Times newspaper said Britain is proposing a “D10” club of democratic partners that groups the G7 nations with Australia and Asian technology leaders South Korea and India.

It said one of the options involves channelling investments into existing telecommunication companies within the 10 member states.

A Downing Street spokesman confirmed that Britain is reaching out to partners in search for an alternative to Huawei. “We (are) seeking new entrants into the market in order to diversify and that is something we’ve been speaking with our allies about, including the United States,” he said.

Few options

Finland’s Nokia and Sweden’s Ericsson are Europe’s only current alternative options for supplying 5G equipment such as antennas and relay masts. “We need new entrants to the market,” a UK government source told The Times. “That was the reason we ended up having to go along with Huawei at the time.”

Johnson’s decision to include Huawei angered Washington because it believes that the private Chinese company can either spy on Western communications or simply shut down the UK network under orders from Beijing.

The United States has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Huawei that have put the future of Britain’s 5G rollout in peril.

Downing Street said the UK National Cyber Security Centre was studying the implication of the US sanctions on Huawei’s immediate ability to produce the equipment Britain needs.

Pressure on Johnson to cut ties with Huawei is being compounded by the new security law Beijing plans to impose on the once British-held Hong Kong.

London infuriated Beijing on Thursday by saying it would offer 350,000 Hong Kong nationals holding a British National (Oversees) passport the right to relocate to the UK if the new law goes into effect.

But Johnson’s reported plan to completely remove Huawei from the UK network could prove costly at a time when his government is seeking new trade partners following Britain’s exit from the EU.

Johnson challenged his US critics in January to come up with an alternative to Huawei if they did not want Britain to use the Chinese firm.

CLUJ, Romania/BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Soon after a two-month lockdown to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus eased in Romania in mid-May, Grigore Lup, a Romanian shoemaker from the Transylvanian city of Cluj, noticed people were not respecting the rules of social distancing.

So Lup came up with the idea of long-nosed leather shoes to help keep people apart. They come in a European size 75.

“You can see it on the street, people are not respecting social distancing rules,” said Lup, who has been making leather shoes for 39 years.

“I went to the market to buy seedlings for my garden. There weren’t many people there but they kept getting closer and closer.

“If two people wearing these shoes were facing each other, there would be almost one-and-a-half metres between them.”

While he also sells ready-made shoes, Lup’s shop, which he opened in 2001, relies heavily on custom orders from theatres and opera houses across the country, as well as traditional folk dance ensembles.

His business ground to a virtual standstill as live events were cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he was cautiously optimistic that sales would recover over time.

The European Union state, which has reported 18,791 cases of the coronavirus and 1,240 deaths, began gradually easing its lockdown on May 15.

Lup, who said he adapted the long footwear from a model he made for actors, said he had so far received five orders for social distancing shoes.

It takes him two days to make a pair, which requires almost one square metre of leather. They cost 500 lei ($115) a pair.

Now 55, Lup first started making shoes when he was 16, learning from a cobbler who at 93 today still makes traditional ethnic Hungarian footwear.

Peshawar (WebDesk) The Afghan Taliban have announced that they will start a regular jihad in India after Eid-ul-Fitr. India’s capital New Delhi has been terrified after this announcement.

Afghan Taliban have taken this decision due to the indiscriminate atrocities perpetrated on Muslims and other minorities by the RSS, BJP, and other similar terrorist organizations in India, besides the massacre of Kashmiris by India. Taliban have announced open revenge against Indians.

Muslims in India have been increasingly at risk since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was first elected in 2014. Several Muslims died in a carnage amidst rising communal tensions in the country. On December 12, 2019, the Modi administration achieved passage of the discriminatory Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). Under the act, for the first time in India, religion is a basis for granting citizenship. The law specifically fast-tracks asylum claims of non-Muslim irregular immigrants from the neighboring Muslim-majority countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The amended citizenship law, coupled with the government’s push for a nationwide citizenship verification process through a National Population Register (NPR) and a proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), aimed at identifying “illegal migrants,” has led to fears that millions of Indian Muslims, including many families who have lived in the country for generations, could be stripped of their citizenship rights and disenfranchised.

To Challenge Amazon Ind, Flipkart India Reliance launches JioMart an online grocery service

India (By Reuters) Reliance has launched an online grocery service, JioMart, the head of its grocery retail business said, in a move aimed at rivaling Amazon local unit and Walmart Flipkart in the huge Indian market.

JioMart will deliver groceries in more than 200 towns across the country, Damodar Mall, chief executive of grocery retail at the Indian conglomerate, said on Twitter late on Saturday.

Mumbai-headquartered Reliance has not announced JioMart’s launch at a time it is selling $7 billion in new shares.

Reliance launched a small pilot of JioMart deliveries in select areas of the Indian financial capital Mumbai late last month, days after announcing that Facebook would spend $5.7 billion for a 9.99 % stake in the company’s digital unit, Jio Platforms.

That partnership will help Reliance roll out service for India’s grocers and small businesses by capitalising on India’s 400 million-strong user base for Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging service.

JioMart, the e-commerce venture of Reliance’s retail arm, offers free express grocery delivery from neighborhood mom-and-pop stores. It will pose a formidable challenge to local rivals, which are also betting big on groceries for their growth.

The launch comes as India is witnessing a surge in coronavirus cases. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the product catalog on JioMart’s website will be expanded after lockdown restrictions aimed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus are eased.

“Never waste a crisis, they say!” Mall said in his tweet.

“A wise colleague mentioned today, ‘Alibaba also flourished starting from the SARS crisis.’”

The oil-to-telecoms giant, controlled by India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the launch.

Reliance is on a fundraising spree with Jio Platforms, which houses telecoms ventures Jio Infocomm, winning a massive $10 billion from investors including Facebook, KKR & Co, and General Atlantic in a month.
Eid Greetings - SMS, E-cards outshine ancient Eid cards activity

Eid Greetings - SMS, E-cards outshine ancient Eid cards activity

Peshawar (APP 27 May 2020) Following the introduction of information technology, the ancient tradition to send Eid cards to relatives and dear ones on joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr had been significantly declined in Peshawar where majority of people were sending SMS and E Cards for greetings.

Due to a boom in IT sector in Pakistan, most of people were now sending greeting SMS and E cards to their loved ones to convey their best wishes and greetings on Eid.
With the introduction of cheap communication means and excessive use of social media such as SMS, E Cards, WhatsApp and Facebook messages, the business of traditional Eid cards has affected in the lucrative market of Peshawar where people were preferring to greet their loved one by sending a simple SMS on Eid day and Chand Raat.

The Eid card sellers in the past had arranged many stalls at different areas of Peshawar including Hastnagri, Karimpura, Goara Bazar, Liaquat Bazaar and Qissa Khawani Bazaar to attract customers.

However, with the introduction of IT technology, people prefer shortcut method of sending their wishes and greetings through E-cards, SMS and Whatsapp messages instead of sending traditional Eid cards through post offices and courier services as they consider it expensive, outdated and time consuming exercise.

Khurshid Khan, a government employee who was busy in shopping in Liauqat Bazaar told APP that he does not have much time to go to shop and buy old fashioned eid cards and then send it to friends and relatives through courier services.

“For the last five years, I select a nice SMS from internet and send it to my friends and relatives to congratulate them on Eid day,” he maintained.

He said prayers for someone was most important than sending Eid cards,” adding that money spend on Eid cards can be donated to poor people and labourers affected by coronavirus lockdown to include them in joy of Eid celebrations.

The book sellers and gift showers owners at Liauqat Bazaar said the trend of buy eid cards has significantly declined due to boom in IT sector, SMS, 3 and 4 G, WhatsApp services in Peshawar.

They said that majority of shopkeepers associated with decades old Eid cards business have said good bye to it.

The placing orders for special Eid greeting cards has almost come to an end and mostly the corporate sector gets the cards printed these days.

The printers had to hire extra staff for printing and designing of eid cards’ as its selling had used to gain pace during the last days of Ramzanul Mubakark.

In these days, mostly senior citizens and traditional people come and purchase Eid cards while attendance of students and young lots were almost comes to an end.

Khushal Khan, a student of engineering in a private University in Peshawar said he would send Eid greeting SMS to friends and relatives on Eid day as he could not afford to buy expensive Eid cards from pocket money.

He said, “SMS is a cost efficient and a fast way of communication to convey Eid greetings to friends, cousins and relatives.”

“The electronic cards give us an option to edit text and modify background besides an addition of animation of choice. Such cards are liked especially by youngsters who are quick to adopt new technologies,” he remarked.

Khushal said people do not have enough time to buy a card and go to a post office or courier service to post it due to coronavirus pandemic.

He said charges of postal and courier services also increased which was behind purchasing power of poor people and white collars.

Most of people, who had been in the business for decades, are now thinking to quit it.  A handful of shopkeepers were used to set up makeshift stalls in front of their books shops to sell Eid cards but this is no longer a common practice.

The shops of Eid cards also cut down at Liaquat and Qisakhwani bazaars for which it was once famous for.

Very few shops with limited variety and numbers are now available in these areas to quench the thirst of Eid Cards lovers.

Eid card sellers in Qissa Khawani Bazaar said price hike has pushed the card prices up and have no other option but to design quality cards at range of Rs50-150 in the market to attract customers.

The local printers informed that people used to place orders for Eid cards on occasion of Eidul Fitr but now only the corporate sector placed orders and that too with their regular printers who print stationery for them.

SMS and E cards besides coronavirus have badly affected printing cards industry in local market and printers have urged the Government to provide special incentives to printing industry for promotion of Eid Cards business in the province.

The printers said over 20,000 people were associated with printing industry in Peshawar whose business were badly affected by coronavirus lockdown and were looking to Government for support.

They urged KP Govt to announce a comprehensive financial package for revival of printing press business in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

'Online sales can create 780,000 employment opportunities in Pakistan'

'Online sales can create 780,000 employment opportunities in Pakistan'

'Online sales can create 780,000 employment opportunities in Pakistan'

BEIJING - The online sales in Pakistan have increased significantly and if Pakistan pursues the development of logistics service and instant delivery service, it will create 78,000 jobs.

The traditional offline sales around the world have been seriously affected due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Online sales have been developing rapidly, and as far as I know, online sales in Pakistan have also increased significantly.

“If Pakistan pursues the development of logistics service and instant delivery service, and reaches the level of China, it will create 780,000 employment opportunities for Pakistanis according to the proportion of the population. The number may grow to 1.56 million in the future,” Cheng Xizhong, visiting professor at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law said in his article published by China Economic Net here on Tuesday.

Small and medium-sized enterprises are now facing great difficulties due to the pandemic, but various online sales platforms have provided them with new opportunities.

More and more companies of clothing, shoes, and hats, electronic products, frozen food, etc. have begun to sell their products on online platforms.

Online sales have become an important business mode during the pandemic period, and will also become the future development trend of business.

From January to April this year, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in China increased by 6.1 percent over the same period of last year. It is estimated that domestic consumption in China will increase further in the next few months of this year. We would like to share China’s experience with Pakistani friends.

He believed that the development of e-commerce needs strong support from at least two industries: mobile communication technology and the logistics service. Now, no matter in urban or rural areas, e-commerce, logistics service, and mobile communication is highly developed in China. We may stay indoors and buy whatever we need through online platforms.

In Pakistan, e-commerce is developing rapidly, but mobile communication and logistics service may be a little behind as some people in rural areas may not have mobile phones. There is also a conceptual problem. As far as I know, some Pakistanis still like to go shopping in department stores and pay cash, which is considered as a kind of enjoyment. But in the current pandemic period, it would be better not to go out.

In addition, the development of the logistics service industry can also create a large number of employment opportunities. Now, the number of employees in China’s logistics service industry is more than 5 million, and it may reach 10 million in the next few years.

Therefore, if Pakistan pursues the development of logistics service and instant delivery service, and reaches the level of China, it will create 780,000 employment opportunities for Pakistanis according to the proportion of the population. The number may grow to 1.56 million in the future.

In conclusion, from the perspective of consumptive habits, online shopping has become the dominant trend; from the perspective of business strategy, sellers hope to have multiple modes of “offline + online” and “foreign trade + domestic consumption”; from the perspective of industries and enterprises, it is urgent for them to realize informatization and digitalization through industrial transformation and upgrading.

To expand domestic demand and consumption is conducive to the recovery of economic development under the COVID-19 pandemic situation. APP

Huawei Continue To Expand Despite US Pressure

Huawei Continue To Expand Despite US Pressure

Huawei Continue To Expand Despite US Pressure

Islamabad Pakistan: - Huawei's Growing 'European village' in houses 25,000 staff and has several train stations named after European cities such as Paris and Bologna. Construction cranes at Huawei's Headquarters busily expand an already massive faux-European campus that Walt Disney would envy, as well as an in-house "university" that trains the Chinese telecom giant's growing global workforce.

If the United States hoped to stop the company in its tracks, it hasn't yet. An escalating US effort to block supplies of vital semiconductors to a company it views as a security risk has Huawei officials and staff speaking anew of a sense of "crisis" on its huge campuses in and around the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. But despite Washington's now 18-month campaign -- and the current coronavirus pandemic -- staffing and the company's big ambitions continue to grow. The new US pressure "has naturally led to some concerns", said Huawei University's deputy director, Ryan Liu."But I've worked for Huawei many years and we are confident the company will guide us on the correct path."The US Commerce Department recently had tightening efforts to deny Huawei access to global semiconductor supplies.

Huawei responded the move will disrupt world supply chains and threaten the company's "survival". But Washington has repeatedly granted reprieves for earlier sanctions on Huawei, and the US may face opposition from American and foreign chipmakers who would suddenly lose orders from Huawei. There are questions remaining over how strict the ruling will be, in both implementation and enforcement," Broderick said. Huawei -- a dominant presence in Shenzhen, headquarters for a number of huge Chinese tech titans -– projects a business-as-usual front. Since Washington singled out the firm as a proxy target in the wider US-China trade struggle beginning in late 2018, its global staff has grown from 180,000 to 194,000 now, company officials say. It announced 19 percent growth in its global businesses in 2019 despite the pressure.

The expanding "European village" complex, housing 25,000 staff, sprawls around a lake, linked by red and orange trains that stop at stations including "Paris", "Bologna", and "Heidelberg", each with plazas and architecture recalling those cities. Washington fears China could use Huawei's telecom networking systems worldwide for espionage or cyber-sabotage.

The company is expected to become a global leader in coming fifth-generation, or 5G, wireless networks, and Washington has lobbied other countries to shun its equipment over potential security risks. But current chairman Guo Ping said this week the US is driven by fear of losing the technological edge to Chinese companies, and Huawei officials have continuously said Washington's threats merely make it stronger. Staff echo that, telling AFP that US moves to deny access to Google services on its Android smartphones led Huawei to accelerate production of its proprietary HarmonyOS operating system, unveiled last year.

Semiconductor disruptions will likewise fuel Huawei chip unit HiSilicon's efforts to develop its own supplies."This challenge will create a more acute sense of crisis, but our answer is to do our jobs right, and have confidence that hard work will pay off," said Liu.

Pakistani farmers: The unsung heroes during COVID-19 pandemic

Pakistani farmers: The unsung heroes during COVID-19 pandemic

Pakistani farmers: The unsung heroes during COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has captured the world’s attention, as it poses a threat to all nations, sectors and social classes. As the virus sickens and kills people across the globe, countries have imposed restrictions and quarantines in an effort to contain its spread and ‘flatten the curve’. These measures have paralysed economies and supply chains worldwide. Media coverage has focused on ‘essential workers’ getting the world through this time of insecurity, such as health workers, police and supermarket staff. But other unsung heroes are at the first step of the food value chain, ensuring that we have food on our tables: our smallholder farmers. In this crisis, eating healthy with fresh fruits and vegetables is even more important and for this we rely on the farmers who continue to harvest and produce food for us. They are our Food Heroes, braving the risks of the virus, to bring us the food on which we depend.

The agriculture sector which contributes 19 percent to the country’s GDP and employs 39 percent of the labour force is a mainstay of Pakistan’s economy. Pakistan is considered as one of the top producers of quality rice, wheat, cotton, sugarcane, mango and oranges in the world, thanks to the relentless efforts put in by the farmers to toil their lands. With COVID-19 cases rising and lockdowns extended in Pakistan, the impact on health and economy was felt rather much earlier on the food basket. While many businesses ceased during nationwide lockdowns and a complete halt of transport services, farmers and food producers kept working despite facing severe challenges. However, like the frontline fighters, farmers too braced themselves to face these challenges and ensure food security for the nation by all means possible.

While on one hand erratic weather conditions resulting in untimely rains, and the threat of locust attacks posed great worries for the farmers, extended lockdowns did no less in crippling their already poor economic conditions. Transport of perishable crops such as vegetables and fruits got affected the most and most of the farmers had to sell their produce at throwaway prices after being disconnected from nearby markets. This was heart wrenching for many farmers since they had carefully worked this whole time on these crops in the hopes of fetching better returns on their harvesting. Wheat harvesting season also fell during this crisis and faced its own challenges. Following restrictions on public transport services due to lockdown and scarce availability of manual labor for harvesting, it became difficult to procure wheat from surrounding districts which posed a great fear that the nation may face an impending food crisis if the situation carried on.

Even as safety and survival is considered a primary concern for a vast majority of population in Pakistan, the farmers have taken upon themselves to brace the storm and protect the nation from any possible food crisis by becoming the stewards of agriculture. Sadly, many of us don’t realise that these farmers who represent the backbone of our economy are under immense unprecedented pressures while they shoulder the responsibility of feeding the nation. Nonetheless, it was refreshing to see Sarsabz recognising the need to appreciate the farmers in a fitting way on digital platforms to ensure that their message reaches out far and wide, as the whole nation is connected through social media under lockdown situation.

The video revolves around an innocent conversation of two kids who miss their fathers’ presence at the occasion of Eid who are away from their loved ones to fulfill their responsibilities of serving their country in their respective domains. The children see their parents as superheroes who have chosen a greater purpose over their own happiness and that of their families. The video aptly reframes our understanding of the invisible frontline and the essential role of farmers, being our unsung heroes in this crisis, for the provision of food to the whole country.
Sarsabz has always been vocal in support of farmers and have time and again introduced different assistance programs for them to help them increase their crop yield in order to uplift their economic conditions. The appreciation for the role of farmers in ensuring food security amid COVID-19 was a much needed step towards accepting them as one of the true unsung heroes in these testing times.

Media Statement on Foreign Direct Product Rule Changes Made by US Government

Islamabad Pakistan –May 24, 2020:-   Huawei categorically opposes the amendments made by the US Department of Commerce to its foreign direct product rule that target Huawei specifically.

The US government added Huawei to the Entity List on May 16, 2019 without justification. Since that time, and despite the fact that a number of key industrial and technological elements were made unavailable to us, we have remained committed to complying with all US government rules and regulations. At the same time, we have fulfilled our contractual obligations to customers and suppliers, and have survived and forged ahead against all odds.

Nevertheless, in its relentless pursuit to tighten its stranglehold on our company, the US government has decided to proceed and completely ignore the concerns of many companies and industry associations.

This decision was arbitrary and pernicious, and threatens to undermine the entire industry worldwide. This new rule will impact the expansion, maintenance, and continuous operations of networks worth hundreds of billions of dollars that we have rolled out in more than 170 countries.

It will also impact communications services for the more than 3 billion people who use Huawei products and services worldwide. To attack a leading company from another country, the US government has intentionally turned its back on the interests of Huawei's customers and consumers. This goes against the US government’s claim that it is motivated by network security.

This decision by the US government does not just affect Huawei. It will have a serious impact on a wide number of global industries. In the long run, this will damage the trust and collaboration within the global semiconductor industry which many industries depend on, increasing conflict and loss within these industries.

The US is leveraging its own technological strengths to crush companies outside its own borders. This will only serve to undermine the trust international companies place in US technology and supply chains. Ultimately, this will harm US interests.

Huawei is undertaking a comprehensive examination of this new rule. We expect that our business will inevitably be affected. We will try all we can to seek a solution. We hope that our customers and suppliers will continue to stand with us and minimize the impact of this discriminatory rule.
