Instagram Is Aggressively Expanding Its TikTok Clone ‘Reels’

Instagram Is Aggressively Expanding Its TikTok Clone ‘Reels’

Instagram Is Aggressively Expanding Its TikTok Clone ‘Reels’

Instagram is expanding its TikTok competitor known as “Reels” to new markets, following its launch last year in Brazil. Starting today, Instagram is rolling out further access to Reels in France and Germany, allowing users to record short, 15-second video clips set to music or other audio, then share them on the platform where they have the potential to go viral.

The Reels feature is similar to TikTok in that it presents a set of editing tools that make it easier to film creative videos. At launch, for example, Reels offered a countdown timer, the ability to adjust the video’s speed and other effects.

The company learned from its early tests in Brazil and has since rethought key aspects to the Reels experience.

Before, Reels were meant to be shared only within Instagram Stories. But the Instagram community said they wanted the ability to share Reels with followers and friends in a more permanent way, and also have the opportunity to expand that distribution more broadly if desired.

In addition, the community said they wanted a dedicated space where they could easily compile Reels and watch other people’s Reels.

With the expansion in Germany and France, Instagram has moved Reels to a dedicated space on the user Profile and in Explore — the latter for public accounts — so people can share with a new audience and share on their Instagram Feed, a company spokesperson tells TechCrunch.

These changes offer the chance for more exposure for both Reels and their creators, as Reels becomes more of a destination in the app — like the Stories row is today, for instance.

Reels are not Facebook’s first attempt at challenging TikTok’s growing popularity.

The Instagram parent company had previously launched short-form video app Lasso, but it has so far failed to gain significant traction. With Reels, however, Instagram is able to tap into its existing base of creators and leverage users’ familiarity with its video editing tools.

The challenge for Reels is in getting Instagram users to create a different type of content than they do today in Feed posts and in Stories. Those videos tend to be more personal in nature — like clips from someone’s day or a vlog, for example. Meanwhile, more professional creator content has been relocated to IGTV.

TikTok videos, on the other hand, tend to be rehearsed and choreographed. Users learn a dance, perform a trick, make jokes, lip-sync to songs or audio, or replicate a popular meme in their own way. These videos are not typically off-the-cuff, as on Instagram. Encouraging this content requires a different editing tool set and workflow, which is what Reels offers.

Instagram didn’t say when it plans to roll out Reels globally or when it expects to bring the product to the U.S., but says the further expansion will allow the company to continue to build on the existing experience and evolve the product.

Facing a growing boycott by advertisers, Facebook to ban more ‘hateful content’ in ads

Facing a growing boycott by advertisers, Facebook to ban more ‘hateful content’ in ads

Facing a growing boycott by advertisers, Facebook to ban more ‘hateful content’ in ads

Facebook said Friday it would ban a “wider category of hateful content” in ads as the embattled social media giant moved to respond to growing protests over its handling of inflammatory posts.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook also would add tags to posts that are “newsworthy” but violate platform rules following the lead of Twitter, which has used such labels on tweets from President Donald Trump.

The initiative comes with the leading social network facing a growing boycott by advertisers — with soft drink behemoth Coca-Cola and Anglo-Dutch giant Unilever joining Friday as activists seek tougher action on the content they deem to promote discrimination, hatred or violence.

The new policy on hateful content in ads will “prohibit claims that people from a specific race, ethnicity, national origin, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, gender identity or immigration status are a threat to the physical safety, health or survival of others,” said Zuckerberg.

“We’re also expanding our policies to better protect immigrants, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers” from hateful ads, he continued.

Facebook has underscored its moves to stem racism in the wake of civil unrest triggered by the May 25 killing of African American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

“We invest billions of dollars each year to keep our community safe and continuously work with outside experts to review and update our policies,” a spokesperson said.

“The investments we have made in (artificial intelligence) mean that we find nearly 90 percent of hate speech” and take action before users report it.

‘Newsworthy’ exception

Zuckerberg said the “newsworthy” exemption normally occurs “a handful of times a year,” when Facebook decides to leave up a message that would ordinarily be removed for rule violations.

“We will soon start labeling some of the content we leave up because it is deemed newsworthy, so people can know when this is the case,” said Zuckerberg under the new policy.

He said users will be allowed to share the content “but we’ll add a prompt to tell people that the content they’re sharing may violate our policies.”

Twitter in recent weeks has labeled at least one Trump tweet misleading and has flagged others as violating platform rules, accessible only when users click through a warning. The move has angered the president and his allies.

Internet platforms have faced intense pressure from activists following Floyd’s death.

A coalition including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has been urging companies to stop advertising on Facebook, using the #StopHateForProfit hashtag.

At the same time, Trump and his allies have voiced anger over what they claim is biased against conservatives.

Brand boycott accelerates

Zuckerberg made no mention of the ad boycott but said the changes were based on “feedback from the civil rights community and reflect months of work with our civil rights auditors.”

Coca-Cola, a major force in global advertising, said it would suspend ads on social media for at least 30 days as it reassesses its policies, though it said the decision was not related to the #StopHateForProfit campaign.

“There is no place for racism in the world and there is no place for racism on social media,” James Quincey, chairman, and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company said in a brief statement.

He said social media companies need to provide “greater accountability and transparency.”

Unilever, home to brands including Lipton tea and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, said it would stop advertising on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in the US until the end of 2020 due to the “polarized election period.”

American Honda said it would halt ads on Facebook in July, “choosing to stand with people united against hate and racism,” adding to a list that includes US telecom giant Verizon and sporting goods makers Patagonia, North Face and REI.

The Facebook move on hate speech in ads “is welcome but (they) account for a small portion of harmful content on the platform,” said Graham Brookie, director of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensics Research Lab, which monitors social media disinformation.

Michelle Amazeen, a Boston University professor of political communication, said details still remain unclear.

“Will Facebook allow independent verification of which content they tag and the subsequent effects on diffusion?” she asked.

Unilever PLC  to stop US advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

THE HAGUE, Reuters - 27 June 2020: Unilever PLC said on Friday it will stop advertising on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the United States for the rest of the year, citing “divisiveness and hate speech during this polarised election period in the US”. The consumer goods company, which owns brands like Dove Soap and Lipton tea, joins a growing advertising boycott against Facebook as part of the “Stop Hate for Profit” campaign started by U.S. civil rights groups after the death of George Floyd. The effort called on Facebook, which owns Instagram, to do more to stop hate speech and misinformation.

Shares of Facebook and Twitter both fell more than 7 per cent.

“Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society. We will be monitoring ongoing and will revisit our current position if necessary,” Unilever said in a statement.

“The Stop Hate for Profit” campaign focused on giving specific recommendations to Facebook, though Twitter has also long been under pressure to clean up abuses and misinformation on its platform.

“We have developed policies and platform capabilities designed to protect and serve the public conversation, and as always, are committed to amplifying voices from under-represented communities and marginalized groups,” said Twitter VP, Global Client Solutions Sarah Personette.

“We are respectful of our partners decisions and will continue to work and communicate closely with them during this time.” Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Huawei Pakistan Launches All-Inclusive Educational Certification Programme 2020

Islamabad 26 June, 2020:- With all education institutions still remaining closed in Pakistan, following the impact of COVID-19, both learners and educators have struggled to cope with the disruptions to traditional education, interruptions that threaten to widen pre-existing learning gaps in different regions, thus aggravating the growing digital divide.

To help bridge this gap, Huawei Pakistan launched the “Learn ON for All” program in Pakistan, to ensure widespread accessibility to high-quality education.

Prior to the launch of the ‘Learn On for All’ program, Huawei Pakistan has already conducted six online guide sessions with around 150 students from Huawei ICT Academy. Six ICT academies have conducted 12 online certification courses.

Additionally, 167 instructors from 15 HEI’s participated in four Train the Trainers (TTT) programs for HCIA-Security, HCIA-5G, HCIA-AI and HCIP-AI, including senior professors from the top universities in the country. From March to today, more than 500 teachers and learners have participated in the online certification exams, with a 90% passing rate.

“This training has been quite enlightening, and a great learning experience. I nominated other faculty members of our department to enhance their skills in the field of AI. I appreciate Huawei’s efforts and would suggest to keep on conducting such trainings, as it helps us provide quality online education and train our instructors on the latest industrial trends,” remarked Prof. Dr. Laiq Hasan on the TTT program, Chairman of the Department of Computer Systems Engineering, UET Peshawar.

After having successfully facilitated the above mentioned online programs, Huawei Pakistan is now launching the “Huawei Certification for All Pakistan Programme 2020”. Students, teachers, ICT industry participants, and anyone interested in the networking technologies can now apply to remotely obtain associate and professional level certifications free of cost.

The subjects feature an array of different networking technologies, from traditional Routing and Switching to latest technologies like 5G, AI to name a few.

Interested parties can participate by registering for a Huawei Uniportal ID and availing the high-quality resources available online on the open platform, including lectures from Huawei experts from across the globe, for self-study.

In order to be eligible for a free exam voucher worth 200USD, candidates will be required to clear a mock examination, following which they can apply to take the certification exam at home. The dates for the exams will be regularly updated on Huawei Pakistan’s social media. Live sessions and Webinars for Online Higher Education are also scheduled to be inducted into the ‘Learn On for all’ program.

Intelligentization has become a benchmark of countries’ competitiveness, and a digital society is emerging in it’s truest sense. Huawei Pakistan remains committed to further decrease the digital divide by reaching out to any and all who are interested in improving their digital skills in advanced technical fields, with a program that provides remote accessibility from its first step to its last.

The Ehsaas Ration Portal aims to link donors and beneficiaries using the existing database of Ehsaas beneficiaries. Donor organizations undergo rigorous background checks before being admitted into the program, and beneficiaries are also screened before being allowed access to the support. A unique feature of the portal is that it allows donors and beneficiaries to be linked on a geographic basis, enabling organizations to conduct targeted distribution efforts.
