Religious festival stampede in Israel kills 44, about 150 hurts

JERUSALEM (AP 30 Apr 2021) — A stampede at a religious festival attended by tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews in northern Israel killed at least 44 people and injured about 150 early Friday, medical officials said. It was one of the country’s deadliest civilian disasters.

The stampede began when large numbers of people thronged a narrow tunnel-like passage during the event, according to witnesses and video footage. People began falling on top of each other near the end of the walkway, as they descended slippery metal stairs, witnesses said.

One of the injured, Avraham Leibe, told Israeli public broadcaster Kan that a crush of people trying to descend the mountain caused a “general bedlam” on a slippery metal slope followed by stairs. “Nobody managed to halt,” he said from a hospital bed. “I saw one after the other fall.”

Video footage showed large numbers of people, most of them black-clad ultra-Orthodox men, squeezed in the tunnel. Initial reports said police barricades had prevented people from exiting quickly.

The stampede occurred during the celebrations of Lag BaOmer at Mount Meron, the first mass religious gathering to be held legally since Israel lifted nearly all restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. The country has seen cases plummet since launching one of the world’s most successful vaccination campaigns late last year.

Lag BaOmer draws tens of thousands of people, most of them ultra-Orthodox Jews, each year to honor Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a 2nd century sage and mystic who is believed to be buried there. Large crowds traditionally light bonfires, pray and dance as part of the celebrations.

This year, media estimated the crowd at about 100,000 people.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who briefly visited Mount Meron around midday Friday, said it was “one of the worst disasters that has befallen the state of Israel” and offered condolences to the families. He said Sunday would be a day of national mourning.

At least 44 people were killed, according to health and rescue officials. In the immediate aftermath of the stampede, rescue workers collected the bodies, wrapped them in white covers and laid them side by side on the ground at the site. Bodies were later taken to Israel’s central forensic pathology institute.

By mid-morning Friday, efforts were still under way to identify some of the victims and connect families with missing relatives. In the night from Thursday to Friday, cell phone coverage around Mount Meron had collapsed for hours and emergency hotlines were overwhelmed with phone calls.

In the overwhelmingly ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv, officials were working with healthcare workers to connect the families of the missing. “The picture is slowly becoming clearer,” Kivi Hess, a municipal spokesman, told Channel 13 TV.

In a race against time, funerals were to be held before sundown Friday, the start of the Jewish Sabbath when burials do not take place.

The death toll at Mount Meron was on par with the number of people killed in a 2010 forest fire, which is believed to be the deadliest civilian tragedy in the country’s history.

Zaki Heller, spokesman for the Magen David Adom rescue service, said 150 people had been hurt in the stampede, with six hospitalized in critical condition.

Heller told Israel Army Radio that “no one had ever dreamed” something like this could happen. “In one moment, we went from a happy event to an immense tragedy,” he said.

The Justice Ministry said the police’s internal investigations department was launching a probe into possible criminal misconduct by officers.

The deadly stampede was also bound to have political reverberations at a time of great uncertainty following an inconclusive March election, the fourth in two years. Netanyahu has so far been unsuccessful in forming a governing coalition, and his time for doing so runs out early next week. His political rivals, including former allies bent on ending his 12-year rule, will then get a chance to try to cobble together an alliance from a patchwork of left-wing, centrist and hawkish parties.

Netanyahu needs the continued support of ultra-Orthodox parties, his long-time allies, if he wants to keep faint hopes alive of staying in power.

Israeli media reported Friday that earlier this month, Netanyahu assured ultra-Orthodox politicians in a meeting that the Lag BaOmer celebrations would take place with few limitations. The reports said this decision was supported by Cabinet ministers and police, despite objections by health officials who warned of a risk of renewed coronavirus infections.

Last year, observances on Mount Meron were limited due to the pandemic.

At the start of this year’s celebrations, Public Security Minister Amir Ohana, police chief Yaakov Shabtai and other top officials visited the event and met with police, who had deployed 5,000 extra forces to maintain order.

Condolences were sent by foreign leaders and diplomats, including the U.S. charge d’affaires. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter that his “thoughts are with the Israeli people and those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.”

The European Union said in a statement that it conveyed “deepest condolences to families and friends of the victims” and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said his country stands by Israel after the “terrifying news from Mount Meron.”

This Ramadan, help the Patients’ Aid Foundation (PAF) in its relentless pursuit of saving lives of needy patients through your Zakat & donation

Islamabad:- Being a developing country, it is evident that the healthcare system in Pakistan does not offer ideal healthcare solutions to its citizens, especially the vulnerable section of the society. The healthcare system in Pakistan is in quite the difficult phase despite many efforts as a considerable percentage of the population belong to lower income groups. The affluent groups do not face much hindrances as quality healthcare is readily available for them via private health institutes. However, the less privileged citizens of Pakistan are very much at a disadvantage as they are unable to receive standard quality healthcare which they so rightfully deserve.

One of the major barriers to access good quality healthcare is poverty. The relationship between poverty and access to quality healthcare is direct; due to financial instability. Lower income groups are unable to get quality healthcare services as the public sector is struggling against its limited financial budget. Availing quality healthcare services puts a great financial stress on the needy patients, many of the affected patients are not able to get the timely treatment or have to leave their treatment in between due to monetary shortcomings.

However, not all hope is lost. As a nation, there are many steps which we can take in order to help our government restructure the country’s healthcare system and policies. If you are privileged enough, then you are capable of becoming a part of this process to make quality healthcare accessible to all. With the help of your contribution via Zakat or donation, there is a lot of positive changes that can be brought to the healthcare system of Pakistan.

Being the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, we are also blessed to witness the Holy month of Ramadan which gives a beautiful option of Zakat to help relief the pain and suffering of less privileged patients. Through Zakat and other donations, the healthcare system can be improved in no time, making good quality healthcare services available to the less privileged citizens of our country.

The Patients’ Aid Foundation (PAF) is a non-profit organization formed in the year 1990 by a group of philanthropists who were majorly concerned about the healthcare system of our country. Through a public-private partnership with the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and the Government of Sindh, PAF has helped revolutionise the healthcare landscape at JPMC. PAF is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and with the Ministry of Finance and Taxation as a non-profit organization.

The Patients’ Aid Foundation (PAF) provides free quality healthcare services, to all those citizens who walk through the gate of JPMC in hopes of seeking treatment but cannot afford it. PAF has certainly made a lot of progress since its inception to transform public healthcare available for all at JPMC. PAF has helped inaugurate some of the latest, state of the art, modern medical equipment at JPMC which has helped treat life threatening diseases, completely free of cost. For instance, PAF is the only organization in all of Pakistan to introduce 2 CyberKnife units, PET-CT facility and Tomotherapy machine which treat less privileged cancer patients for free. PAF has helped treat millions of deserving patients at JPMC who were on the verge of losing hope and quite possibly their life.

During this Holy month of Ramadan, contribute towards the mission of the Patients’ Aid Foundation (PAF) to help in its relentless pursuit of ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible to the less privileged patients. You can contribute through various methods such as call to collect, bank transfers, online payments, or foreign remittances, all of which are mentioned on its website.

Karandaaz Offering Grants for Digital Financial Services in Savings and Insurance

Karandaaz Offering Grants for Digital Financial Services in Savings and Insurance

Karandaaz Offering Grants for Digital Financial Services in Savings and Insurance

Islamabad, April 30, 2021 – Karandaaz Pakistan is currently accepting applications from commercial banks; branchless banks; PSO/PSPs; Fintechs; non-banking financial institutions; and entities that primarily focus on the excluded segments of the population, to apply for grants to scale up their pilots that generate new financial use-cases for digital channels. Two categories that have been defined for this set of grants are savings and insurance. In savings, pilots that are testing the use-case generation in term deposits, periodic returns, and rotating savings and credit association (ROSCA), locally known as committee system will be focused. In insurance, pilots that are geared to improve adoption of health, life, assets, and travel insurances through digital financial channels will be considered. The last date to apply for grants is May 11, 2021.

Karandaaz under its strategy for 2020-2024 is building and supporting models and solutions for the financial inclusion of the unbanked and underbanked population through private sector engagement. In addition to empowering those who do not have an account, this underbanked population must be targeted with pilots that introduce financial deepening. Entities interested to apply for grants under this pilot to scale program can get more details from https://bit.ly/3gjcLVe

Ali Sarfraz, CEO Karandaaz said, “Karandaaz collaborates across the ecosystem to maximize impact through improved access to digital finance for low income, rural, and otherwise excluded population segments, especially women. We work with all stakeholders to facilitate the digitization of government and other payment streams as well as provide support for innovation in the realm of digital financial services that originate from the private sector. To this end, Karandaaz runs multiple programs that contribute to a holistic impact on the ecosystem. It is crucial to extend support for innovations that are likely to create sustainable social impact as far as financial inclusion is concerned, but are often limited in terms of resources. This pilot to scale program was specifically designed to support such innovative ideas.”

Rehan Akhtar, Chief Digital Officer Karandaaz said, “We are looking for pilots that are intended to make a difference through identification of consumer adoption strategy, digitization of information flow, incentives adoption, technically develop systems and products, test new use cases, test multiple consumer interfaces and activate on-ground adoption of a saving or insurance solution. We are hopeful that these grants for scaling up innovative pilots will help increase the product portfolio of mobile wallets, specifically with insurance and savings products and re-invent existing un-conventional digital financial services for these two categories.”

Despite increased uptake of digital channels for financial services in the last 12 years in Pakistan, research and data shows that the users have a low-value perception of such services. Identifying and communicating a compelling value proposition to consumers is vital for increasing use-cases. Understanding the nuances of how consumers of different segments earn, save, and spend their money can help providers develop relevant value propositions for each segment. This pilot to scale grants from Karandaaz will help create value propositions that resonate with the end-users under the categories of savings and insurance and broadening as well as normalizing everyday usage of digital financial services and products for these functions.

SECP launches combined digital registration with provincial agencies

ISLAMABAD, April 29: As part of its transformational journey, the SECP has now introduced a single combined digital certificate evidencing registration with SECP and some provincial departments simultaneously.

The SECP continues to strive for reducing physical interaction with the citizens, and is focused on providing services through use of modern technology at the door-step of the end-users. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the overall “Starting a Business” time in Pakistan and would have a positive impact on the country's ranking on the Doing Business Index.  There are less than 10 jurisdictions globally where federal and provincial registrations are integrated online on a real-time basis, and Pakistan has also now joined this league.

The single combined certificate will be issued through SECP’s e-Services in real-time upon incorporation of a company through a ‘single window, and will simultaneously register the company with provincial departments, including Punjab Employees Social Security Institution (PESSI), Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI), Labour & Human Resource Departments and Excise & Taxation Departments of Punjab and Sindh. The digital combined certificate features QR code and a hyperlink for instant verification of registration status of the company. SECP has in the past also integrated its systems with FBR, EOBI and BOI.

The launch of this combined electronic certificate by SECP is another landmark initiative towards automation of regulatory processes to foster a user-friendly business environment in the country, expected to further fuel the growth of new company registrations in Pakistan.

The SECP’s vision is to relentlessly develop a digital ecosystem under the ‘Leading Efficiency through Automation Prowess’ (LEAP) program for end-to-end digitalization of all its internal processes as well as outside interface. The recent reforms introduced under LEAP include Digital Certificate of Incorporation, launch of an online portal for banks to facilitate expeditious account opening, online issuance of Digitally Certified True Copies of statutory returns and mortgage register.

Lucky Cement announces the highest consolidated earnings of PKR 22.15 billion for the nine months ended March 31, 2021

Karachi:  On a consolidated basis, Lucky Cement Limited reported the highest profit after tax to date of PKR 22.15 billion of which PKR 3.93 billion is attributable to non-controlling interests for the nine months ended March 31, 2021. This translates into earnings per share (EPS) of PKR 56.36 / share as compared to PKR 14.38 / share reported during the same period last year.

Further, on a consolidated basis, the Company achieved gross turnover of PKR 202.46 billion which is 63% higher as compared to the same period last year’s turnover of PKR 123.99 billion. During the 9M 2020-21 under review, the Company’s consolidated net profit (attributable to owners’ of the Holding Company) increased by 292% as compared to the same period last year. The increase in Net Profit was mainly attributable to increase in profitability of the Cement segment (Holding Company) which grew by 3 times due to higher turnover and better efficiencies from new line at North. The increase in the consolidated Net Profit was further supported by considerable increase in Net Profit of Lucky Motor Corporation, which reported a revenue of 3.5 times the revenue of corresponding period. The other subsidiaries, ICI Pakistan Limited and LCL Investment Holdings Limited also posted significant increase in profitability mainly attributable to growth in sales revenue.

On a standalone basis Company’s overall sales volumes posted a high double digit growth of 31.1% to reach 7.61 million tons during 9M 2020-21. The local  sales volumes grew by 38.8% to reach 5.71 million tons in comparison to 4.11 million tons during the same period last year. Also, the export sales volumes of the Company increased by 12.3% to 1.90 million tons as compared to 1.69 million tons during the same period last year.

The increase in Company’s local sales volume during the period under review is mainly due to availability of new capacity in Pezu and significant growth in the Cement demand triggered by upsurge in economic activities especillay in North. Moreover, growth in export sales volume is mainly due to higher exports of loose cement owing to effective push by the Company, keeping in view the better margins and its unique position to make such sales.

Further, with regards to Company’s standalone financial performance, the gross sales revenue increased by 37.9% to PKR 66.13 billion compared to PKR 47.95 billion reported during the same period last year. The per ton cost of sales also decreased mainly due to better absorption of fixed cost as a result of increase in volumes and efficiencies achieved from new production line in the North. Lucky Cement recorded net profit after tax of PKR 11.69 billion. Similarly, the standalone EPS of the Company is PKR 36.14 / share as compared to the same period last year’s reported EPS of PKR 9.08 / share.

The Company reported progress on its brownfield plant expansion activities in KPK with project completion targeted for December 2022. Further, Greenfield cement production facility in Samawah, Iraq successfully completed its trial production and commenced commercial operations from March 2021.

The Company also reported that its 1 X 660 MW supercritical coal based power project at Port Qasim has achieved completion status of approximately 97.5% by end of this quarter. Based on the current level of readiness by NTDC for providing interconnection facility and the Government’s support, it appears that project would achieve its Commercial Operation by mid of first quarter FY 2022 (July to September, 2021).

Lucky Cement continued its patronage on Education, Women empowerment, Health and reassured its commitment for the development of society and the communities in which it operates.

Lucky Cement expects that in view of hike in infection ratio from third wave of Covid-19, if the Government imposes micro/smart lock-downs in major cities, then the cement demand will be affected in the short term. The Company also believes that the package announced by the Federal Government for the construction industry coupled with various initiatives taken by State Bank of Pakistan to support the housing sector and the commencement of new housing projects under Naya Pakistan Housing (NPHP) scheme will have a positive impact on the local demand of cement in the country in medium to long term. New FDI inflows are also expected in CPEC projects, which will result in increased cement demand. The Company also showed its concern that there will be a pressure on margins due to rising coal and furnace oil prices.

YouGov’s Technology Rankings 2021 MENA reveal Apple, Google and WhatsApp are the brands with the most positive impression among consumers in UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

These rankings are calculated using data we collect from members of the public around the globe every day, for our BrandIndex tool. The brands in the YouGov Technology Rankings 2021 were ranked based on a 12-month average Impression score - a net measure of whether a consumer has a positive or negative impression of a brand.

The UAE top 10 list is led by WhatsApp (Impression score of 54.5). Despite facing a tough year with regulatory and reputational challenges around the world, the instant-messaging giant maintains its positive impression among consumers in the UAE, securing the top spot in the rankings.

Along with WhatsApp, several other leading internet and social media brands feature in the list.  Facebook secures a spot in fifth (40.6), followed by Instagram and LinkedIn- at sixth (36.7) and seventh (30.7), respectively.

Korean tech giant Samsung ranks second (with a score of 52.5), while Apple and Google follow closely in third (52.4) and fourth (49.1), respectively. Multinational tech companies Sony (25.6), Microsoft (27.8) and Huawei (24.8) also appear in the 2021 KSA tech rankings.

Global technology company Apple tops the rankings in Saudi Arabia. The past twelve months saw a host of new launches from the brand, making it the tech brand with the most positive impression (46.6) among consumers in KSA.

Chinese tech giant Huawei (28.5), British telecommunication company Vodafone (26.5), Korean electronics brand LG (16.6) & Japanese multinational conglomerate Sony (14.2) are other brands that feature in the top 10 list of Egypt.

Global Rankings

South Korean tech giant Samsung sits atop our 2021 global list. Another ubiquitous brand - Google - comes second on our list. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn also feature in the list.

Apple secures a spot at number 5 as do Chinese tech brands Huawei and Oppo- at number 10 and 25, respectively.

Some other familiar brands to make it into the global top 25 include Panasonic, LG, Bosch, Philips, Sony, Microsoft, Siemens, HP and Yahoo!.

Methodology:The brands in the YouGov Technology Rankings 2021 were ranked based on the Impression score, which is a measure of whether a consumer has a positive or negative impression of a brand calculated by taking the average over a period of 12 months.

The rankings chart shows the brands with the highest average Impression score between March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021. The scores are representative of the general population of adults 18 and over (some are online representative).

All Impression scores listed have been rounded to a single decimal place; however, we have used additional precision to assign ranks. All brands have been tracked for at least six months to be included in the rankings.

Where brands are tracked in more than one sector within one market, we have taken the average Impression score.

The categories we have included in the YouGov Technology Rankings 2021 are:

  •     Hardware manufacturers
  •     Software manufacturers
  •     Social media platforms

In most cases, only master brands have been included within the rankings. The exception to this rule is the inclusion of Instagram and WhatsApp where it may not be widely known by the public that Facebook is the parent company of these brands.

The categories we have excluded from the Technology Rankings are:

  •     Fintech/Payments
  •     Streaming/media platforms
  •     Gaming consoles
  •     Apps
  •     White goods and appliances
  •     Ecommerce/Online marketplaces*

*Amazon has not been included in the YouGov Technology Rankings as this brand will be included within the YouGov Retail Rankings in line with the primary sector tracked for the master brand in BrandIndex.

The above categories will feature in the relevant, subsequent YouGov sector rankings.
