Lucky Cement announces the consolidated earnings of PKR 17.15 billion for the first half ended December 31, 2021

Lucky Cement announces the consolidated earnings of PKR 17.15 billion for the first half ended December 31, 2021

Karachi:  On a consolidated basis, Lucky Cement Limited reported the profit after tax to date of PKR 17.15 billion of which PKR 4.01 billion is attributable to non-controlling interests for the first half ended December 31, 2021. This translates into earnings per share (EPS) of PKR 40.66 / share as compared to PKR 32.05 / share reported during the same period last year.

Further, on a consolidated basis, the Company achieved gross turnover of PKR 154.50 billion which is 24.9% higher as compared to the same period last year’s turnover of PKR 123.72 billion. During the HY 2021-22 under review, the Company’s consolidated net profit (attributable to owners’ of the Holding Company) increased by 26.8% as compared to the same period last year. The increase in Net Profit was mainly attributable to the stellar performance of Company’s Chemicals business. Apart from the one-off unrealized accounting gain recognized on acquisition of controlling shares in NutriCo Pakistan amounting to PKR 1.847 billion, the Chemical business achieved considerable improvement in net profitability on account of impressive growth in its Polyester, Pharma and Animal Health business segments.

In the automobile business, Lucky Motor Corporation introduced Kia Stonic in its line up as well as started commercial production of Samsung branded mobile phones during the half year under review. Whereas, profitability of Company’s overseas operations increased mainly due to improvement in sales volume and operations of Company’s Joint Venture Greenfield cement plant in Samawah, Iraq, which achieved its COD in March 2021.

On unconsolidated basis Company’s overall sales volumes posted a decline of 5.9% to reach 4.70 million tons during HY 2021-22. Company’s local sales volumes remained almost in line with the corresponding period last year i.e. 3.63 million tons in 1HY 2021-22 versus 3.66 million tons during the same period last year. The export sales volumes of the Company declined by 19.7% to 1.07 million tons as compared to 1.34 million tons during the same period last year.

The decline in overall dispatches is mainly attributed to decline in export volumes on the back of volatily in coal prices and freight costs internationally, which have adversely impacted the viability of cement exports from Pakistan.

Further, with regards to Company’s unconsolidated financial performance, the gross sales revenue increased by 20.2% to PKR 50.61 billion compared to PKR 42.11 billion reported during the same period last year. The per ton cost of sales also increased mainly due to increase in coal prices along with other input costs. Lucky Cement recorded net profit after tax of PKR 5.77 billion showing growth of 27.2%. Similarly, the standalone EPS of the Company is PKR 17.86 / share as compared to the same period last year’s reported EPS of PKR 14.04 / share.

The Company reported progress on its brownfield plant expansion activities in KPK with project completion targeted for December 2022.

The construction activity for setting up a 660 MW super critical, lignite coal-based power plant is near to completion and it has been synchronized with the national grid in November 2021. The Project is currently under testing phase and it is targeted to achieve COD in February 2022.

Lucky Cement continued its patronage on Education & Scholarship, Women Empowerment, Health, Environment Conservation and reassured its commitment for the development of society and the communities in which it operates.

While the previous waves of Covid-19 receded in the past, the pandemic continues to resurge with different variants of the virus. Even with the persistent drive of the Government on compliance of SOPs and getting the masses vaccinated, prudent expectation is that volatile infection rates will continue for the time being. We, however expect that the economy will continue to show resilience against the adverse impacts of such pandemic.

On the other hand, the ongoing inflationary trend in commodities globally has resulted in an increase in cost of inputs, such as coal, diesel, furnace oil and freight charges, which are a major cost component of cement. Currency devaluation has further impacted and increased these costs.  Due to increase in costs of other construction materials, the local demand will remain flat. At the same time, cement prices have only partially offset the increase in input costs faced by the manufacturers.

Construction of dams, hydropower projects, real estate development and low cost housing schemes will help to maintain the demand of cement in the medium to long term.

OPPO Predicts Exciting Zero-Battery Future Powered By Wireless Signals

OPPO Predicts Exciting Zero-Battery Future Powered By Wireless Signals

In the near future, IoT devices will be able to harvest energy directly from Bluetooth, WIFI, and cell phone signals, resulting in features such as smaller size, better durability, lower cost, and high sustainability value. OPPO’s “Zero-Power Communication” white paper highlights exciting futuristic scenes where the number of batteries in use the world over will be significantly reduced. An example given is of electronic tags, applied to locate items, not requiring battery replacement or recharging. Another scenario is of every endangered migratory bird being equipped with long-distance tracking devices.

The OPPO Research Institute in its white paper examines the technical positioning of Zero-Power Communication technology in the context of current unmet demand in the IoT space. The paper outlines a future roadmap for the technology to develop in conjunction with other communications systems of the future.

Zero-Power devices have excellent features such as being battery-free, highly compact, low power consumption, and low cost

The majority of portable electronic devices today rely on batteries as their power source. While battery technology has advanced over the years, it still presents significant problems in terms of overall size, production cost, lifespan, ease of use, and environmental friendliness of the batteries themselves. Zero-Power Communication technology avoids the need for batteries by harvesting ambient radiofrequency energy from the surrounding environment to generate power, resulting in highly compact, efficient, and low-cost devices. Such properties have benefits in commercial applications such as warehousing, logistics, agriculture, wearable devices, smart homes, and other cutting-edge consumer applications.

With an increasing emphasis in all industries to develop and implement sustainable products and practices for the betterment of the planet as a whole, OPPO believes that technology should also evolve to deliver greater convenience and sustainable value. In countries, like Pakistan, which face serious power shortages, Zero-Power devices can be particularly advantageous. These devices harvest ambient radio signals broadcast from sources such as TV towers, FM radio towers, cellular base stations, and WIFI access points (APs) as their source of power. After harvesting energy from existing radio waves, the device can modulate ambient radio signals with its information and transmit these signals outwards in a process known as backscattering communication.

Zero-Power Communication mainly utilizes RF power harvesting, backscattering, and low-power computing technology

Zero-Power Communication systems can be constructed in a framework that uses cellular communications, sidelink communications, or both, in hybrid form. These systems support devices used for various applications, in a variety of environments, over a range of distances. OPPO has already successfully built its own Zero-Power Communication system and demonstrated the feasibility of the concept as a viable approach to future communications networks. OPPO is also taking the lead in promoting the Zero-Power Communication standard by proposing research projects to 3GPP, and sharing findings at industry conferences such as FuTURE and ICCC.

OPPO unveiled two white papers to continue researching cutting-edge communication technologies

OPPO also published its 6G AI-Cube Intelligent Networking White Paper regarding cutting-edge communication technologies. In line with its brand mission of “Technology for mankind, kindness for the world,” OPPO is targeting to release commercial Zero-Power Communication technology within the next 3 to 5 years as it continues to build smarter, more convenient, and greener communications systems.

NCHR launches awareness campaign on discrimination against Christian sanitary workers

NCHR launches awareness campaign on discrimination against Christian sanitary workers

ISLAMABAD, Tuesday, January 25, 2022: In line with its mandate to address violations of human rights, the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), in collaboration with EU funded Huqooq-e-Pakistan (HeP) project, on Tuesday launched an awareness campaign on systemic discrimination against Christian sanitary workers.

The campaign was launched at the conclusion of NCHR’s day-long civil society consultation held to get stakeholder’s feedback on Commission’s four-year strategic plan. The event was attended by members from the civil society and professional from print, electronic and digital media.

Aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by sanitation workers in occupational safety and employment security, the campaign was launched with the screening of a film highlight the plight of the families of sanitation workers who died in Sargodha. A few months ago, 2 Christian Sanitation workers, Nadeem and Faisal Masih, died due to toxic fumes and gases in the sewers in Sargodha.

The campaign also features sharing of messages around the issues through print, electronic and digital media, a series of online posts on the discriminatory ads that appear for hiring of sanitation worker, posts on facts related to the Government’s quota system and how it is skewed to discriminate against minorities, showcasing of similar cases such as Sargodha deaths through print, electronic and digital media.

Speaking on this occasion, Chairperson NCHR Rabiya Javeri Agha shared that the Commission intends to file a suit against the Government to remove the discriminatory language in the advertisements for employment of sanitary workers. “Such advertisements are in violation of Article 27 of the constitution of Pakistan as well as the violation of international treaties ratified by the government especially Article 1 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 1-7 of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.”

She said that in 2009, Pakistan introduced a quota of 5 per cent for minorities on all federal and provincial Government posts. “However, the Annual Statistical Bulletin of Federal Government Employees 2017–18, states that only 2.8 per cent were hired, and most of them were concentrated in low paid work,” she said adding that as of 2021, there are a total of 29,692 vacant minority posts of different grades for recruitment across Pakistan.

“Most distressingly, evidence shows that government organisations have tried to meet the requirement by advertising sanitation jobs and other low paying work as being exclusively for Christians or other ‘Non Muslims.’ Even though Christians are 1.6 per cent of the population of Pakistan, they represent over 80 per cent of the sanitation workforce,” she informed.

The Chairperson said that an overwhelming majority of sanitation workers who have died cleaning sewers are from the Christian community. “From 2011-2021, over 65 per cent of sanitation workers who died while cleaning sewers were from minority communities.”

Highlighting some other facts, she said that Christian sanitary workers are exploited and discriminated against in a myriad of ways. Instead of being employees of the Municipal Corporation, they are often classified as ‘daily wagers’, denying their basic labor rights. They are not given proper PPE or masks, and are most often forced to strip down to their shorts to descend into the sewage system. Emergency Staff tasked with rescuing workers often refuse to go into sewage systems, leaving the bodies of workers, both dead and near death, for other community members to remove. In some reported cases, even once injured sanitation workers are taken to hospitals, doctors often refuse to treat them because they are ‘unclean’ and covered in filth.

NCHR Member Minority Manzoor Masih stressed for putting an end to unconstitutional and discriminatory advertisements. “We must fill the minority quota in government jobs across all grades, not just BPS 01-04, and we must ensure that we implement affirmative action the way it was meant to be implemented- as a tool to help uplift minority communities, not oppress them further.”

Vivo V23e — Amazing Cameras, Powerful Performance And Gorgeous Design

Vivo V23e — Amazing Cameras, Powerful Performance And Gorgeous Design

In this era of camera centric smartphones, it goes without saying that a good camera is what a customer wants. It takes precedence over everything else. It is more than just a specification; it is a statement. Especially when talking about social gatherings or family settings, the person with the best camera is expected to capture every moment. However, for those looking for an ideal smartphone, this isn’t the only consideration. It must be combined with other aspects such as battery life, performance and build quality.

The benchmark of a modern smartphone has made it so that every phone needs to hit all the right spots and vivo has done just that with its new smartphone, the V23e. This smartphone not just tackles the camera performance from the rear angle, but it equally focuses on the front camera as well. As a company that focuses on technology and innovation, vivo has once again demonstrated its dominance in the global smartphone market.

To put it more precisely, vivo has introduced the all new V23e to its V series. As the latest phone in the series which is known for its outstanding camera quality and features, this phone is sure to fulfil the expectations of a successor. Let’s take a look at its astounding features:

Camera:

To begin with the features of this smartphone, it is only right to talk about its magnificent camera first. The V23e comes with a 50MP AF Portrait Selfie camera. It is not every day that we see a front camera that is so powerful. Even when zoomed in, this camera will produce photos that are sharper and clearer. Even in low light situations, it brightens the face. Furthermore, it also sports Eye Autofocus which automatically locks on to a person’s eye while capturing pictures reducing blur and maintains sharpness in the pictures.

Coming to the rear camera of the phone, V23e offers a triple camera setup of a 64 MP Night Camera, an 8MP super wide-angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. The Camera performs exceptionally well due to its Super Night Mode feature which balances the brightness and darkness with the help of Al multi-frame denoising to help in low light conditions.

The Standard Stabilization is also a big factor in making this camera a success. This function enables automatic cropping which negates jerk and shake while shooting. The camera also features multiple camera modes to deliver outstanding processed images for the subject. Additionally, it sports the Bokeh Flare Portrait mode that makes the pictures even more dazzling. This mode fits perfectly in night scenes as it adds a pop of light to the dim surroundings.

Performance:

When talking about the performance of this smartphone, the device offers a premium specification of 8GB RAM and a 128GB/256GB ROM. The 8GB RAM can be extended so the user can get an experience equivalent to 12GB, with the help of Extended RAM 2.0.

These features go hand in hand with the 4050mAh Battery that has a 44W FlashCharge making it easier to manage your phone usage. A major consideration for any smartphone performance, vivo’s V23e has Funtouch OS 12, that offers its users full customisation when it comes to the home screen. The user is no longer confined to a fixed uniform look, the user can change their home screen whenever they want.

The OS also offers features like Nano Music Player which helps users to quickly play or switch music without the hassle of going to the music app itself. Stickers allows its users to set small reminders and memos on important things, helping day-to-day chores and work. Finally, the Small Windows allows multi-tasking by making the app interface float as a small window.

Appearance:

As a vivo smartphone, this device is not just about its camera and performance. It has the 7.36mm Ultra Slim AG Design that makes this phone aesthetically pleasing. With a superior build of 7.36mm thickness, this phone offers a great feel in the hand with profound elegance and classic taste.

The V23e comes in two colour variants – Moonlight Shadow and Sunshine Coast. Both the colours are chosen keeping in mind the smartphone’s Flat Frame Design that supports simplicity and vivo’s joy of humanity, nature and technology. The Moonlight Shadow is a classic polished ceramic black finish that is filled with the mystery of the night. On the other hand, the Sunshine Coast is a satin texture with a gradient that changes depending on the lighting comparable to the ever-changing dreamland.

V23e is available for purchase across Pakistan at the price of Rs. 52,999 (128GB) and Rs. 59,999 (256GB). For more details, visit the official product page: https://www.vivo.com/pk/products/v23e

TECNO all set to bring RGBW Camera Sensor Technology to Smartphones

TECNO all set to bring RGBW Camera Sensor Technology to Smartphones

The continuous evolution of technology has urged many brands to either excel at a fast pace or be left far behind. The globally eminent smartphone brand, TECNO has been seen bringing something new for its users from time to time. In a webinar last month, TECNO’s Global team announced to be working with Samsung to bring the latest RGWB Camera Sensor in their phones.

The brand discussed featuring a new Samsung image sensor that uses an RGBW pixel array for better quality images. TECNO mentioned Samsung’s Isocell GWB – an upcoming mobile imaging sensor that adds a white pixel to red, green, and blue pixels. The addition of the white pixel will improve the sensor’s overall sensitivity to light which will help produce better low light photographs. It claims lesser background glare in lit environments and more balanced contrast levels in darker backgrounds.

A few days back, TECNO Pakistan posted on its social media stating “We've launched the industry's latest RGBW Camera sensor technology”. Fans seem to be overjoyed by the news but we still don’t know which phones could be coming with this feature. Can you guess which of TECNO’s phones will be the first to have this technology?

According to multiple sources, TECNO shall be bringing some of the greatest technological devices from its Camon and Phantom series in Pakistan. The brand brought its first Borderless AMOLED – Phantom X along with the Gimbal Technology Camon 18 Premier in 2021. Hence the expectations are too high and we hope TECNO will not make its fans wait too long and launch some amazing devices soon.

UBL joins forces with Visa to drive fintech enablement in Pakistan

• United Bank Limited (UBL) will be the first bank in Pakistan to sign the Visa Ready BIN Sponsorship program agreement

• The program is designed to enable UBL to sponsor fintech clients to issue Visa card credentials and offer, modern, digital payment experiences to their customers

In what is a first for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, and third in the CEMEA (Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa) region, United Bank Limited (UBL), Pakistan’s fastest-growing digital bank, has joined forces with Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments, to drive fintech enablement in Pakistan by becoming the first “Visa Ready BIN Sponsor” in the region.

As a certified Visa Ready BIN Sponsor, UBL, will offer its BINs that could be used by fintechs, enabling them to build and launch payment solutions that meet Visa’s global standards around security and functionality, that too at a low-cost.

Visa created the Visa Ready program to help reduce the need for fintechs to divert their focus on navigating licensing and payment networks requirements. Traditionally, any institution that needed to issue a payment card in the region used to go through the long process of finding a BIN sponsor. In establishing the program, Visa is supporting fintechs to quickly and efficiently stand-up payment solutions for their end clients—thus accelerating time-to-market and fueling their business growth.

Kamil Khan, Visa’s Country Manager for Pakistan, commented, “Pakistan has a massive pool of fintechs and there is a tremendous potential to accelerate digitization. As the first partner to offer BIN Sponsorship, UBL can enable the launch of card programs across non-traditional financial institutions and fintechs in the market bringing to light newer use cases. Visa Ready allows UBL to provide rapid access to Visa’s certified infrastructure – giving fintechs the confidence that payment flows meet local regulations. We are looking forward to seeing a greater number fintech companies benefitting from this partnership with UBL as we continue to drive innovation and support the launch of products and solutions that transform the payment experiences of consumers in Pakistan.”

Sharjeel Shahid – Group Executive Digital Banking UBL, commented, “UBL aims to maintain its lead as the front-runner in the digital-ecosystem by creating an enablement platform for fintechs desirous of entering the market with new use-cases. Our status as a Visa Ready partner is one more step in that direction, where the objective is to create a seamless and fast-track onboarding experience for non-banking players”.

Through Visa Ready BIN sponsorship, UBL becomes a go-to partner for fintech and business players as it provides them with the necessary resources and framework to launch financial products quickly and seamlessly, that comply with the local regulations.
