School On Wheels Launched in Shorkot, D. I. Khan, KP to Minimize Education Disruptions Caused by Flood

In D. I. Khan district alone, the heavy rains and flash floods damaged over 350 school buildings that disrupted educational activities in some areas of the district. An official in the district education department reports that the recent rains and floods have destroyed or damaged around 257 male and 87 female schools in all five tehsils of the district.

To help flood-affected students return to school, the Ministry of Federal Education and KP Education Department has launched School On Wheels, a Google-funded pilot initiative to bring classroom amenities to the students of D. I. Khan, coupled with powerful devices, i.e., Chromebooks. School on Wheels aims to help students continue their education by generating interest through engaging curricula and fun activities.

Under a proof-of-concept, a single model will be deployed for three months at DI Khan with all the resources, such as the internet, generator, foldable desks, whiteboard, and LCD,  to create an effective teaching and learning environment. This pilot project will serve as a roadmap for the future scale-up of such models to eradicate out-of-school children's problems in Pakistan.

Regarding this initiative, Additional Secretary, the Ministry of Federal Education, Waseem Ajmal said, “We are thankful to Google for helping us visualize the idea and execute it with the help of multiple local and international teams. Through this pilot initiative, the Ministry of Education will explore further opportunities to scale up this idea.”

The Google for Education team also joined the launch ceremony remotely while representatives from the Ministry of Federal Education, KP Education Department, and Deputy Commissioner D. I. Khan were present on the ground.

Commissioner D. I. Khan, invited as a chief guest, said, “Through this initiative, we hope to attract students towards educational activities that can further generate their interest in exploring the digital world.”

This project is being implemented by Tech Valley, which is a Google for Education Partner in Pakistan. At the occasion, the CEO of Tech Valley, Umar Farooq, said, “With this initiative, we plan to engage and motivate students in D. I. Khan to pursue their education after being affected by flood and equip them with basic digital literacy skills so they can continue learning remotely in future too.”

As a local representative of D. I. Khan, Faisal Amin Gandapur, Minister of Local Government, Elections, and Rural Development said, “Education is the top priority of our government, and we appreciate the efforts of Google for Education and Tech Valley for taking this initiative.”

Ericsson was recognized as a leader in climate performance and reporting

Ericsson was recognized as a leader in climate performance and reporting

Ericsson’s global leadership in climate performance and reporting has been recognized by the independent non-profit CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) by being named in its annual ‘A List’ – the top ranking possible.

CDP’s annual climate disclosure and scoring process is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate reporting. Based on data reported through CDP’s 2022 Climate Change questionnaire, Ericsson is one of more than 280 of companies that achieved an ‘A’ out of more than 20,000 companies scored.

“At Ericsson, we take our role in climate action seriously, and you can’t manage what you don’t measure,” Heather Johnson, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility, Ericsson, says. “That’s why it means so much to colleagues across the company to see our commitment to climate action recognized on the CDP A List this year. This recognition is a testament to our continuous progression toward ambitious and science-based climate targets.”

A detailed and independent methodology is used by CDP to assess companies with scoring based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of climate risks and opportunities, and demonstration of best practices associated with climate leadership such as setting ambitious and meaningful targets.

Johnson adds: “Today more than ever, companies have a crucial role to play in limiting climate change to 1.5°C. That’s why Ericsson will continue to join forces with our customers, suppliers, and the entire ICT ecosystem to manage our climate impacts and develop sustainable solutions that can help take effective climate action.”

Maxfield Weiss, Executive Director, CDP Europe says: “CDP saw nearly 20,000 companies disclose environmental data this year. The CDP A List companies are showing they are ahead of the game – taking clear action to reduce emissions and to address environmental impacts throughout their value chains. This is the type of environmental transparency and action we need economy-wide to prevent ecological collapse.’’

Taliban’s Ban on Education for Afghan Women and Girls Will Have Potentially Disastrous Consequences, Say U.S.

Taliban’s Ban on Education for Afghan Women and Girls Will Have Potentially Disastrous Consequences, Say U.S. National Academies Presidents

We are deeply concerned by the recent decision taken by the leadership of the Taliban to ban women in Afghanistan from participating in university-level education. This discriminatory measure is only the latest in a series of highly repressive actions affecting women and girls in the country, including restrictions preventing Afghan girls from attending secondary school.

This ban ignores the body of evidence on the benefits of education for women for themselves, their families, and their nations. Education has a significant impact on the well-being of individuals, and a strong link exists globally between schooling levels and subsequent earnings, as well as between schooling levels and various social outcomes, such as child health outcomes.

Education is crucial for the economic growth and development of societies. Moreover, the exclusion of women from both participation in and leadership of institutes of higher education can negatively impact the success of the environment, and contribute to hostility, harassment, and violence toward women. These uncivil environments negatively impact not only women, but all members of the community. With this in mind, one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is directed to inclusive and quality education for all women as an important component of promoting peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

Such restrictions not only constitute a gross violation of internationally guaranteed rights and freedoms, they have profoundly negative implications for Afghan women and girls and Afghanistan itself. The Taliban’s denial of education to half of the Afghan population is a misguided decision with potentially disastrous consequences for the future of the country.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have long promoted gender equity in education and the STEM workforce, in the United States and globally, and we strongly support women and girls in Afghanistan seeking to exercise their fundamental rights, including the right of access to education without discrimination.

Putin bans oil exports to Western nations that imposed price caps

Putin bans oil exports to Western nations that imposed price caps

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday banned the export of oil and oil products to the U.S. and its allies that recently imposed a price cap on Russian oil.

The ban will activate on Feb. 1 and remain in force until July 1, 2023, according to the executive order released by the Kremlin.

Russian oil may still be exported to those nations under the ban if Putin authorizes it through a special order.

The Group of Seven (G-7) nations, along with the European Union (EU) imposed a price cap on Russian oil that went into effect this month.

The cap prevents Russia from selling oil at more than $60 per barrel, a move intended to punish Moscow for invading Ukraine while also eating into Putin’s war chest.

Under the new rules, nations that sell Russian oil above the price cap can lose access to essential services for oil shipments across international waters, such as insurance and trade finance.

The G-7 comprises the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, and companies in those nations control about 90 percent of the maritime insurance market.

Russia, the world’s third-largest oil producer, has rerouted much of its oil intended for Europe to China, India and Turkey, giving those nations steep discounts for the energy product.

In response to the G-7 and EU price cap, the Kremlin said it can continue to finance its war effort.

But some analysts said Russia has been living off a huge windfall from high energy prices this year, which will wear off in the next few months and could make the country more vulnerable.

Western nations have slapped rounds of sanctions on Russian officials and entities since the war began. Putin has often retaliated with his own sanctions and prohibitions.

Trump says in his Christmas message: 'The USA is dying from within!!!'

Trump says in his Christmas message: 'The USA is dying from within!!!'

Former President Donald Trump on Sunday offered a holiday tirade on his Truth Social platform that ended with: "The USA is dying from within!!!"

"On this very cold but beautiful Christmas Day, look at our Nation NOW on the Southern Border compared to only a short time ago during the Trump Administration," he wrote on his Truth Social Platform, characterizing current conditions as a "horror show."

That message followed one from Saturday in which he had opened and closed with Christmas greetings — “Merry Christmas to EVERYONE" and "LOVE TO ALL!” — but otherwise took aim at his usual targets and praised himself. At one point, Trump, who is running for president again, referred to himself as "clairvoyant," without elaboration.

The tone of Trump's holiday messages differed from those of his predecessor and his successor.

"Merry Christmas, everybody! One of the best parts of the holiday season is getting to spend time with the special people in our lives. I hope you all have a wonderful and joyful Christmas," former President Barack Obama said in a post illustrated with a picture of his wife and daughters.

President Joe Biden posted a photo of him and first lady Jill Biden finishing up their tree Saturday night, then tweeted on Christmas morning: "Jill and I wish you a very Merry Christmas. We hope you and your loved ones are surrounded by love, happiness, and cheer this holiday season."

On Friday, Trump had responded by video to the release of the 845-page final report of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. He attacked both the credibility of the committee and the accuracy of its conclusions, which were highly critical of him.

The report said: "The central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him." The committee report followed criminal referrals to the Department of Justice from that nine-member committee.

Shae Gill: Spotify Wrapped Most Streamed Pakistani Female Artist and EQUAL Ambassador for December

From her debut to becoming a household name through Pasoori, Shae Gill’s musical career is worthy of the global acclaim it has received

Nearing a year of celebrating astounding women artists, Spotify’s EQUAL Pakistan announced the voice behind ‘Pasoori’, Shae Gill as its Ambassador for the month of December. The global program featured Shae Gill’s track ‘Sukoon’, a soulful melody about finding peace in solitude, as the highlighted track on the platform. To top it all off, like all previous ambassadors, Shae Gill lit up a digital billboard at Times Square NYC.

Anushae Babar Gill, who became known popularly to us as Shae Gill, hails from Lahore and is amongst the freshest sensations that the local industry has produced. Starting off as a cover-artist on Instagram in 2019 to debuting with a song like ‘Pasoori’, and now being the most streamed Pakistani female artist on Spotify this year as revealed by Wrapped 2022, Shae Gill has made her mark and has come a long way.

"I feel incredibly humbled and honored to be representing all the women in the music industry who are making the world a more equitable place,” said Shae Gill on her announcement as the EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador for the month. “I believe that women need more of such opportunities," she added further.

Shae Gill has dropped two successive tracks in the winter of 2022, the first being a cover of the much-loved, traditional wedding song ‘Lathay Di Chadar’. Her most recent offering, ‘Sukoon’, the collaboration with the songwriter-singer duo of Hassan and Roshaan, has audiences reminiscing about the glory days of Nazia Hassan. The track has that appeal!

Adding her comments on Shae Gill becoming the latest EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador, Spotify’s Senior Manager Editorial for Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, Rutaba Yaqub stated: “2022 has been an eventful year for Pakistani women in music, from Arooj Aftab to Shae Gill making waves outside of Pakistan and making us proud. This month, our playlist features the best of women creators that Pakistan has to offer.”

These observations were expressed by speakers at Pakistan’s largest Web 3.0 and blockchain event titled “W3B Summit” held at the National Incubation Center (NIC) in Islamabad. It was attended by leading entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, technology professionals, and students. The summit was organized by Teamup and National Incubation Center in partnership with S&P Global and Fasset. The event aimed to lay down the foundation for emerging technologies in Pakistan.

Zouhair Khaliq, former CEO of Jazz, a veteran corporate executive, and Founding Partner, Teamup & National Incubation Center Pakistan, welcomed the guests and delegates at the summit. He highlighted the role of the National Incubation Center, “I am glad to see NIC catalyzing innovation in Pakistan and this event is part of our attempts to turn Pakistan into a tech destination. There is tremendous potential in this field, and we must ensure Pakistan’s place in this rapidly developing landscape.”

Mujeeb Zahur, Managing Director S&P Global shared his firm belief in understanding and supporting the development of technology as the best way forward, “Technology is the only field that gives your economy and social progress an instant boost irrespective of your geo-political situation. It is a world without divisions and works on pure merit and talent. Pakistan has no dearth of either. I hope to see such events regularly and look forward to S&P Global partnering with them in the future.”

Monis Rahman, a leading entrepreneur, and Founder, Rozee.pk & Dukan.pk, spoke on the future of fintech and Web 3.0 in Pakistan. “I have complete faith in the overwhelmingly young and tech-savvy population of Pakistan to take technology and innovation to new levels and enable a strong position for Pakistan as an emerging technology.”

Noshad Minhas, Country Head of Pakistan Fasset, was very optimistic, “Pakistan is amongst the top

3 Web 3 adopting nations in the world. It is home to some of the world’s best and brightest developers, researchers, and scientists in tokenization, digital assets, and blockchain technology. In tandem with National Incubation Center, Fasset hopes to build awareness and educate the next generation of Web3 adopters on safe, responsible, and innovative development as well as the adoption of the future of this game-changing space. We believe that with the right building blocks, the talented youth of Pakistan can unlock $100bn of potential economic growth.”

It is noted that sectors from financial services to retail and e-commerce, media and entertainment, healthcare, IT, government, and energy, almost every sector is expected to adopt Web3.0 blockchain. Industry leaders and users see potential in the highly transparent nature of a decentralized Web3.0, where all transactions are recorded and registered and can be easily traced. On the other hand, developers and IT teams invest in Web3.0 due to the strengths of its rapidly developing technology.

SECP registers 7 new Private Funds in 2022

SECP registers 7 new Private Funds in 2022

ISLAMABAD: The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has registered seven (7) new private funds under the Private Funds Regulations during the calendar year 2022.

Given that the Private Funds industry for past many years had only five funds, the registrations of two Venture Capital (VC) funds, four Private Equity and Venture Capital (PE&VC) funds and the country's first alternative fund is a significant development. Incentivized by the consistent reform measures, a sharp growth has been witnessed during the past three years in the number of PFMCs from four to ten, leading to an increase in the number of players in the SECP regulated PF industry.

The new funds, worth approximately Rs. 13.6 billion are expected to be launched within the financial year ending June 30, 2023. Following the launch of these funds, the cumulative asset size of PF sector is expected to increase to PKR25.8 billion, from PKR12.287 billion as on September 30, 2022, indicating a growth of 110 percent.

The SECP conducted a ‘Diagnostic Review of Pakistan's Private Funds Industry’ and recommended measures to revitalize the sector. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on the recommendation of SECP exempted the income of PE&VC funds from tax. In addition, the SBP has issued a clarification regarding its Prudential Regulations for Corporate/Commercial Banking for explicitly allowing banks to participate in PF units. The SECP has also allowed insurance unit linked funds and equity sub-funds of pension funds to invest up to 5% of net assets in PF units. The implementation of several key recommendations of diagnostic study has led to record growth in new PF registrations and is expected to direct private capital to the sector.

The PF industry has potential to contribute significantly in energizing economic activity through providing non-traditional funding sources and managerial expertise to start-ups, SMEs, and financially troubled listed entities, generating jobs and increasing government revenues. The SECP is actively working to implement remaining diagnostic review recommendations to further rejuvenate the PF industry in Pakistan.

Sarsabz joins farmers to celebrate fourth Kissan Day

Multan: Sarsabz Fertilizer, the flagship brand of Fatima Fertilizer, joined thousands of farmers on December 22 to celebrate the fourth Kissan Day during a special ceremony hosted at Fatima Fertilizer's plant in Multan which was attended by a large gathering of farmers which also included Mr. Khalid Khokhar, President of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, Dr. Anjum Ali, Director General (Extension & AR) in Punjab, and Nazo Dharejo - a progressive farmer from Sindh, who actively advocates about the hardships faced by farmers.

Important officials including Syed Fakhar Imam (Ex-Minister of National Food Security and Research), the Vice Chancellor of the University of Multan, Dr. Asif Ali and member of the Pakistan Crop Protection Association (PCPA), Asif Majeed and other senior officials also attended the event to mark their tribute and deep appreciation towards the farmers.

On account of Kissan Day celebrations, Fawad Mukhtar, CEO of Fatima Fertilizer said, "In context to the recent floods, protecting Pakistan's future food security has become the most important priority for the agriculture sector. This can only be achieved through the hard work and dedication of our farmers' community who are already facing immense hardships and challenges due to the devasting floods and need our support and encouragement to achieve this monumental target."

Rabel Sadozai, Director of Marketing & Sales, at Fatima Fertilizer also said: "Farmers are our true heroes who play a vital role in harnessing the true potential of the agriculture sector. Let us all work towards modernising the agriculture sector and helping small-scale farmers to overcome their current challenges so they can play their due role to ensure our economic prosperity and national food security.”

The recent floods in Pakistan have severely impacted the agriculture sector which is currently facing an acute existential crisis. Not only has it become more challenging to meet the country's food security needs, but the potential income from agricultural exports is also expected to decline significantly. Agriculture experts predict that if thousands of acres of agricultural land are not restored on priority, the country may face a noticeable food shortage in the near future. To rescue Pakistan from this threatening situation, the government needs to mobilise all possible resources and play a pivotal role in reviving the sector.

Sarsabz Fertilizer has been effectively working to protect the interest of farmers by proposing initiatives like Kissan Day to create a platform where farmers' issues can be raised to the attention of stakeholders and policymakers to try and explore possible reforms and policies which can help support the farmers.

The one-day celebrations of Kissan Day concluded with a distribution of shields ceremony among the farmers’ community.

The biggest American tech company Google has been recorded on an official list of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) as a company. This is a big move to open an official office in the country. Now google the giant tech company will open its office in Pakistan very soon.

According to sources, the SECP has issued a certificate of registration to Google under Section 435 of the Companies Act 2017. Google Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. has been registered under the Companies Act 2017 for establishing a liaison office in Pakistan.

Google after registration with SECP will start its operations in Pakistan very soon. A delegation from Google will come to Pakistan next week and will meet the Pakistani authorities and discuss its operations in Pakistan.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) was in touch with international companies and was trying hard to bring them to Pakistan, but the companies were reluctant due to the political instability.

However, there has been a breakthrough in this regard with first Google and then Tik Tok agreeing to set up offices in Pakistan, while the talks between the ministry are ongoing with Facebook.

The officials of the IT ministry are hopeful that Google will establish its office in Pakistan in the next few days. According to MoITT officials, Google in recent years has launched several initiatives in Pakistan.

In September Google launched career certifications to offer flexible learning paths to all Pakistanis. In June 2022, Google launched a suicide hotline in Pakistan to tackle suicide cases and mental health issues.

The MoITT official said Google’s registration as a company in Pakistan is a good sign. Google is investing $3.5 million in the Google certification program and the registration with SECP means that the company wants to invest more.
