Ericsson and MediaTek top upload speed record with Uplink Carrier Aggregation

Ericsson and MediaTek have set a new 5G upload speed record of 440 Mbps in low-band and mid-band spectrum using Uplink Carrier Aggregation. The zippy uplink speed brings better, smoother experiences for the likes of video conference users, streamers, and their audience with more frames per second and higher image resolution.

The record uplink speed was achieved in an interoperability development test at an Ericsson lab. The test was performed with RAN Compute Baseband 6648 and a mobile device using MediaTek Dimensity 9200 flagship 5G smartphone chipset. The Uplink Carrier Aggregation combination involved a frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) channel, in a frequency range widely deployed in today’s 5G networks.

More precisely, the combination used was 50MHz FDD n1 and 100MHz TDD n77. By aggregating these two bands, communications service providers can considerably increase their uplink speeds, resulting in better network performance and user experience.

Sibel Tombaz, Head of Product Line 5G RAN, Ericsson, says: ”Super-fast uplink speeds make a big difference in the user experience. From lag-free live streaming, video conferencing and AR/VR apps, to more immersive gaming and extended reality (XR) technologies.”

“The 440 Mbps upload speed achieved by Ericsson and MediaTek will help make that difference,” she adds. “We are also continuously designing innovative solutions for optimizing 5G networks so our customers can make the best use of their spectrum assets.”

Service providers are seeking innovative ways of boosting capacity while using existing spectrum efficiently to meet growing demands for wireless data and applications. This is where carrier aggregation comes in, optimizing the service provider’s spectrum assets to bring to users better coverage, increased capacity, and higher data speeds.

HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication System and Partnership at MediaTek, says: “The successful result of combining Ericsson’s state-of-the-art 5G Baseband and MediaTek’s flagship smartphone chip has achieved another 5G industry milestone, and paves the way for superior mobile experiences to benefit users every day.”

Uplink speed is becoming more crucial with the expected uptake of gaming, XR, and video-based apps. For example, as AR devices gain popularity with larger augmentation objects, rendering becomes more demanding. This increases the demand on networks to deliver higher throughput and lower latency.

CASE awarded the Asia-Pacific Leadership Award to Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of LUMS

CASE awarded the Asia-Pacific Leadership Award to Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of LUMS

A first for LUMS Advancement of Education in the Asia-Pacific Region

Lahore: The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has awarded the Asia-Pacific Leadership Award to Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of LUMS. Dr. Ahmad is the first recipient of a South Asian university to receive the award in recognition of his efforts to promote education and institutional advancement.

Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector of LUMS, noted, “Over the years, LUMS has emerged as a model for how a small, young university located in a country without the historic advantages of prosperity, can make a substantial, positive impact on a wide range of complex, interconnected global challenges.”

Dr. Ahmad added, “The gifts of LUMS include its exceptionally talented students across Pakistan and the extraordinary faculty and staff who teach and support them. The CASE Leadership Award will always belong to LUMS, and I’m privileged to be part of the community that is one of the best-kept secrets of the Global South.”

Since joining LUMS in 2018, Dr. Ahmad has strengthened the University’s unique perspective of Learning without Borders to transcend academic, geographic, and socio-economic boundaries to advance quality higher education in the region.

Dr. Ahmad’s drive to bring people together and transcend traditional silos in LUMS’ governance and core academic work has formed the basis for many significant institutional advancements.  He commented, “To truly make a difference to our students, our communities, and the region, we must look at the challenges before us as opportunities that lead to new ways of thinking, learning, and working together.”

Over his tenure, this approach has had a significant impact. By combining LUMS Alumni Relations, Marketing, Development, and Communications under the Office of Advancement, donations and new grants to the University have tripled, and alumni contributions have doubled. Dr. Ahmad also championed the 50% scholarship for women enrolled in graduate programmes at the Suleman Dawood School of Business, which resulted in a 35% increase in women's enrolment within graduate programmes. These efforts have also resulted in more financial support for students coming from disadvantaged areas through LUMS’ signature National Outreach Programme (NOP).

Today, LUMS promotes a transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching that encourages cross-appointments across Schools and Centres at LUMS and strengthens faculty and student collaborations across different fields. New experiential learning programmes such as the Baltistan Experience have expanded immersive learning opportunities at LUMS. Dr. Ahmad spearheaded this new programme in 2022 by engaging hundreds of students for a month-long experiential learning partnership in Skardu. This summer, in the month of July, 50 students from the Computer Science department will lead 25 IT boot camps in high schools across Gilgit. Together, students and faculty from LUMS and communities in Gilgit-Baltistan will engage in several field-based courses that respond to major challenges with local and global impact.

Dr. Ahmad has also initiated the LUMS Learning Institute to support faculty development, pedagogical partnerships with students, and the integration of educational technologies to enhance learning and teaching. Following the pandemic, LUMS became a recognised leader in Pakistan in providing support for effective hybrid and online learning. The recent creation of LUMSx, the University’s new online platform, opens new possibilities for the University to amplify access, relevance, and collaboration.

Dr. Ahmad’s unwavering commitment to LUMS and to the advancement of quality higher education in the region will be long-lasting. He has played a pivotal role in supporting and advancing LUMS across all aspects of its work, its outreach, and its impact in the region and beyond. This award celebrates his dedication to exceptional quality higher education and signals the extraordinary progress that the LUMS community has achieved to make a difference in the Global South. The award ceremony recently took place during the CASE Asia-Pacific Advancement Conference and was followed by Dr. Ahmad’s participation in the President’s Panel held in Melbourne.

Nehaal Naseem is Spotify’s latest success of Fresh Finds Pakistan

The 17-year-old budding vocalist, Nehaal Naseem is the latest discovery of Spotify’s signature Fresh Finds Pakistan. After Abdul Hannan and Aleemrk, two of Pakistan’s freshest music sensations, Nehaal is the latest musician who has grabbed attention emerging from Fresh Finds PK, a fact highlighted by a staggering 2852% growth in her monthly listeners.

“Having joined Fresh Finds on February 13th with her melancholic song ‘Beqadra’, Nehaal has already accumulated over 2 million streams and counting. With Fresh Finds, we aim to discover voices that have potential and just need that extra push. Like other Fresh Finds discoveries, we supported Nehaal on various playlists. Pesticide Imports to be Facilitated through Pakistan Single Window

Pesticide Imports to be Facilitated through Pakistan Single Window

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Single Window has launched a new service to facilitate the import and clearance of pesticides in Pakistan. As part of the service PSW has also deployed the unified registration system enabling electronic registration of pesticide products and premises with the Department for Plant Protection. The URS enables real-time validation of pesticide products and premises at the time of customs clearance.

Under Pakistan’s trade regulations, all imports of pesticides are subject to mandatory Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) by independent third parties, to ensure that imported pesticides conform to international and national requirements. With a view to facilitate regulatory compliance, the module also allows PSI companies to electronically communicate inspection certificates with the PSW system, which are then made available to traders and relevant regulatory departments for verification.

PSW’s new module is based upon electronic validations driven by PSW’s integration with the DPP and the indigenously developed Integrated Tariff for Trade (ITT) which allows pesticide traders to provide 4-digit product codes while filing a declaration on the PSW system. The ITT allows PSW to derive relevant regulatory requirements for each consignment and automatically route it to the relevant DPP office for processing.

In a statement released from his office, Syed Aftab Haider CEO Pakistan Single Window stated, “The new services simplifies the inspection process and ensures consistent application of laws while at the same time reducing the time and cost involved in submission of paper based documents to multiple authorities. Electronic receipt of the PSI certificates further enhances the transparency and integrity of the process.”

The new service is an important milestone in PSW’s mission to transform and digitize the cross-border trade landscape of Pakistan by enabling electronic validation and processing of trade consignments, thereby significantly reducing trade compliance costs and time.

Pakistan Single Window (PSW)

The Pakistan Single Window initiative led by Pakistan Customs aims at reducing the time and cost of doing business by digitalizing Pakistan’s cross border trade and eliminating paper based manual processes. The DPP is the first government department to have integrated with the PSW system and is currently offering services for electronic issuance of Import Permit (IP), Release Order (RO), and Export Certificate (EC) through the PSW platform. As of April 2023, DPP has processed more than 100,000 documents through PSW with 36% of import permits and 55% of export certificates processed and issue the same day resulting in substantial savings for the traders.

Wells Fargo to pay $1 bn to settle shareholder class action

Wells Fargo to pay $1 bn to settle shareholder class action

New York (AFP) - US bank Wells Fargo has agreed to pay $1 billion to settle a class action lawsuit by shareholders who accused it of not having changed its management and practices quickly enough after a series of scandals.

The agreement has been submitted to a federal judge in Manhattan for approval, according to a document filed Monday.

In June 2020, a group of shareholders, including Sweden’s Handelsbanken Fonder AB and the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Pension & Relief Fund, launched a class action against the San Francisco-headquartered bank.

Their lawsuit accused Wells Fargo of shortcomings in strengthening its risk control and compliance following commitments made to regulators in 2018.

At the time, the Federal Reserve had forced the bank to submit a plan to take control of the management, accompanied by a temporary asset cap following a series of compliance problems.

The Fed’s punitive restrictions followed a series of scandals over abuses at the bank, including opening millions of fake accounts and charging unnecessary insurance premiums to more than half a million customers on their car loans.

In March 2020, a report by the House Financial Services Committee accused the bank of not having started real reform of its governance and of not complying with the Fed’s directives in terms of risk management and compliance.

In September 2021, the bank was hit with a new fine of $250 million for failing to meet requirements in an agreement to pay previously harmed customers in the fake accounts scandal.

Since 2016, Wells Fargo has paid billions in settlements and financial penalties related to its business practices.
