Ahsan Zafar Syed assumes the office President & CEO of Engro Corporation

Karachi: Ahsan Zafar Syed has assumed the office of President & CEO Engro Corporation, after the completion of Ghias Khan’s seven-year tenure at the Group. He began his journey with Engro in 1991 as a young engineer, accumulating three decades of experience in operations, project management, and strategic leadership across the petrochemical, energy, and food & agriculture sectors.

Before his appointment as President and CEO of Engro Corporation, Ahsan led Engro's flagship fertilizer business. Under his leadership, Engro Fertilizers became the most valuable fertilizer company on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The increase in valuation is attributable to portfolio optimization where the company divested low return noncore businesses, improved market positioning of Engro urea, scaled up specialty fertilizers, enhanced digital presence to better serve the farmers, and completed one of the largest turnaround activities at the Plant site focused on driving efficiencies and debottlenecking urea capacity. In his earlier role in the Company, Ahsan led the construction of the $1.1 billion Enven Plant, a milestone achievement for Engro and one of the largest projects completed in Pakistan.

During his tenure as CEO of the Energy vertical, Ahsan played a pivotal role in realizing Pakistan's Thar dream by unearthing indigenous coal and operationalizing a 660MW power plant at mine mouth. This project has been instrumental for Pakistan's energy security, achieving import substitution of $1.5 billion till date and providing electricity to 9 million people annually.

On assuming office Ahsan Zafar Syed said, “I am deeply humbled to assume the role of President & CEO of Engro Corporation. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Board for their confidence in me and appreciate the contributions of my predecessor Ghias Khan. I am excited to lead the organization that is committed to addressing pressing issues of our time, recognizing their dynamic and ever-evolving nature. In this journey, we will adhere to our core values, contribute positively to the communities we operate in, and cultivate trust-based relationships with our employees, shareholders, and wider society.”

In recognition of his engineering contributions to Pakistan, Ahsan was awarded the prestigious "National Engineering Excellence Award" by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan in 2024. He was also appointed as Honorary Convenor of the Light Engineering Sector, a committee formed by Engineering Development Board - government body under Ministry of Industries & Production entrusted to strengthen engineering base in Pakistan.

Ahsan has championed multiple diversity and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives across Engro to increase women representation in mid-management roles to nurture them as future leaders. His dedicated efforts in this area have not only earned Engro several prestigious local and global awards but have also set a benchmark for inclusive practices within the industry. Further, Ahsan firmly believes that Pakistan's true potential lies in investing in the upskilling and empowerment of its youth, preparing them to excel in the future landscape. This conviction drives his ongoing commitment to bridge the gap between education and industry needs.

Government misses opportunity to earn billions by delaying gas reforms in fertilizer sector

Government misses opportunity to earn billions by delaying gas reforms in fertilizer sector

Government misses opportunity to earn billions by delaying gas reforms in fertilizer sector

By failing to urgently address the existing gas pricing discrimination in the fertilizer sector, the Government is missing out on an opportunity to earn billions in revenue.

Government misses opportunity to earn billions by delaying gas reforms in fertilizer sector

On April 4, 2024, Fauji Fertilizer (FFC) increased its urea prices by Rs 633/bag (17%) to Rs 4,400/bag. This price increase was made even though there had been no change in its gas input cost. It is still receiving Mari network gas on the subsidized price of PKR 580/mmbtu compared to other manufacturers on SSGC and SNGPL networks that faced a tariff hike to PKR 1,597/mmbtu in February 2024.  The Government has taken notice of this sudden urea price hike by FFC as there has been no increase in the manufacturers’ gas input costs. For the fertilizer industry, gas prices are key and account for around 70 percent of the input costs. In case FFC is unable to provide a convincing justification for the price increase, the Ministry of Industries & Production may take administrative measures against it under Section 5 of the Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Order, 2021.

The missed opportunity to earn billions in revenue becomes difficult to justify, especially in view of the ongoing economic crisis and IMF loan discussions. This revenue could be used for investment in the agricultural sector through targeted projects and initiatives that generate economic activity and growth in the country.

According to industry analysts, if the Government had removed the current price discrimination among fertilizer manufacturers earlier this year, it would have been able to collect between PKR 80 – 100 billion in revenues. This is a missed opportunity for the Government and detracts from its objectives of reducing the national debt and achieving long-term urea price stability for the farmers.

It has been suggested that the only way to bring stability to the urea market is to immediately remove the current price discrimination among fertilizer manufacturers for the same homogenous product (gas). Through uniform gas pricing, 40% of the fertilizer manufacturing capacity on the Mari network should be charged the same rate as the existing 60% on SSGC and SNGPL network.

Government sources reveal that the IMF has already asked the authorities to end subsidies for all fertilizer manufacturers and develop a direct subsidy mechanism for the farmers. By continuing with the much-needed fertilizer reforms to completely remove all subsidies and any price discrimination, the Government will be able to reduce its debt burden, promote efficiency and attract new investments in the fertilizer sector.

Meanwhile, at the Spring Meetings 2024, the IMF has once again stressed on the need to “accelerate the reforms, double down on the structure of reforms in order to provide Pakistan with its full potential of growth.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a committee on the implementation of Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) and tasked it present recommendations next week. As WACOG impacts several industries, the committee will be assessing the impact of system-wide WACOG on domestic power, industrial (including fertilizers), commercial, and captive power sectors. It will also propose a technology-based foolproof and efficient system for the disbursement of direct subsidy to farmers by provinces once the subsidies for fertilizer manufacturers are completely removed.

Google fires 28 workers after office sit-ins to protest cloud contract with Israel

Google has fired 28 employees involved in protests over the tech company’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government, according to statements from the company and campaigners.

The workers held sit-ins at the company’s offices in California and New York over Google’s $1.2 billion contract to provide custom tools for Israeli’s military. They were fired on Wednesday evening after police earlier arrested nine people.

Google said “a small number of employee protesters entered and disrupted a few of our locations.”

“After refusing multiple requests to leave the premises, law enforcement was engaged to remove them to ensure office safety,” Google said.

The company said it carried out “individual investigations that resulted in the termination of employment for 28 employees, and will continue to investigate and take action as needed.”

The group behind the protests, No Tech for Apartheid, disputed Google’s version of events, saying the company fired people who didn’t directly participate.

The company’s claim that the protests were part of a longstanding campaign by groups and “people who largely don’t work at Google” was untrue, the group said.

The group posted photos and videos on social media showing workers in Google offices holding placards and sitting on the floor, chanting slogans.

Business community witnesses slight improvement in sentiments: Gallup Survey

Karachi, April 05: Largely pessimistic about the future, more of the country’s business owners now have developed a better perception of their businesses as the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is trying to revive the cash-strapped economy.

A latest Gallup survey conducted in the first quarter this year finds that 47% of Pakistan’s businesses, especially those selling garments, commodities, stationery and gift items, perceive themselves to be in a bad or worse conditions. This shows a three percent improvement over the previous quarter.

The current business situation score on Gallup Business Confidence Index has improved by seven percentage points to 6% in 1Q2024 from -1% in the previous quarter, noted Gallup Pakistan Survey report.

“While economic security has not fully stabilized due to the ongoing political situation, the business situation score has improved regardless,” it said.

It said while the current business score on Gallup Business Confidence Index continued to recover for the fifth straight quarter, the future business score and direction of the country score see a reversal.

Asked about their expectations for future business conditions, the businessmen were pessimistic about the future as the net future business confidence score has worsened by 16% since last quarter and now stands at 4%, according to the survey report.

The business community’s perception about the direction the country is heading in was negative as only 20% respondents said Pakistan was heading in the right direction. The direction of the country score has fallen to -60%, down 13 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.

“There is an overall decline in the future business and direction of country scores” between the third quarter of 2023 and first quarter of this year, the report observed.

Like the previous survey, inflation was the most cited problem as more than two out of four businesses would want the new government to control. The proportion of those who want the government to arrest the devaluation of the rupee has also increased.

“Political instability and taxes have taken a backseat in concern relative to the past quarter, while utility bills and business-related legislation have become more of a concern,” the report said.

Asked whether business conditions during past three months induced a decrease in the workforce, three out of 10 businesses surveyed said yes. This number shows 6% decline over the previous quarter.

Given the still backbreaking inflation and a slow economic activity in the country, businesses were asked about their sales this Ramadan and more than half of them said it had worsened. Only 18% said they are doing better.

Moreover, a majority, 73%, of the businesses surveyed do not have the hope that the newly elected government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will address the country’s business problems. Only 25% of the businesses surveyed were somewhat hopeful.

The survey reveals that while majority of businesses, 74%, did not make such complaints some service providers and manufacturers said they had to pay bribes in past six months ending March to run their businesses.

About half of the businessmen, 45%, think of the government as irrelevant for their business, while 23% look at it as a facilitator and 33% consider it a hurdle, according to the survey report.

Despite government’s claims to have reduced load-shedding, the number of businesses braving power outages has increased by seven percent to 45% this quarter compared to the previous one.

“After many quarters more businesses perceive that their current situation is better than before which is a positive news, said Bilal Ijaz Gilani, executive director at Gallup Pakistan and chief architect of the Gallup Pakistan Business Confidence Index Pakistan, in the report.

He, however, said pessimism about the country’s economic future as well as the direction of the country has deteriorated.

“Lack of certainty about both politics as well as economic policies continues to hurt the business community’s sentiment despite the fact that there is some improvement on the ground,” Gilani said.

He urged the country’s economic and political managers to pay close attention to bringing stability and continuity of policies.

Majority of businesses surveyed are not very optimistic about the new government, he said citing the latest survey results.

“Engagement and actively resolving business community issues should be therefore top priority of the federal and provincial governments,” said the executive director at Gallup Pakistan.

This latest survey is the 12th of a quarterly Business Confidence Survey that Gallup conducted across Pakistan. The Business Confidence Index is an important barometer capturing the sentiments of business community in any country and used across the world by policy makers. The survey was conducted with around 535 businesses across Pakistan.
