Karachi: The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) organized a unique event, the "Dining in the Dark Experience," in collaboration with Khaas Foodz Kitchen (KFK) on Thursday. Aviation’s substantial contribution to Dubai’s economy revealed in latest report

Karachi 24 October: Emirates Group and Dubai Airports have released an economic impact study reaffirming aviation's pivotal role in Dubai's economy. The study, compiled by global research firm Oxford Economics, provides insights into the sector's current and projected contributions, assessing direct, indirect, and induced economic activity as well as the catalytic impact of aviation-driven tourism.

In 2023, the aviation sector, including Emirates Group, Dubai Airports (covering Dubai International and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum airports), and other aviation entities, contributed AED 137 billion (USD 37.3 billion) to Dubai's GDP, accounting for 27% of the total. This figure includes the core impact of AED 94 billion from aviation operations and AED 43 billion from aviation-facilitated tourism. By 2030, this contribution is expected to rise to AED 196 billion, representing 32% of Dubai's GDP.

The sector also played a significant role in employment, supporting 631,000 jobs in 2023, equivalent to one in five jobs in Dubai. With projected growth, an additional 185,000 jobs will be created by 2030, bringing the total to 816,000 jobs.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group and Chairman of Dubai Airports, emphasized that aviation remains a key pillar of Dubai's economic growth strategy under the D33 Economic Agenda, which aims to further expand the city's global role in trade, tourism, and logistics. With strong air connectivity, Dubai is already a prominent hub for international business and leisure travel. Sheikh Ahmed highlighted that Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International Airport, when fully completed, will significantly enhance the city's global standing. The airport, currently undergoing a AED 128 billion investment to expand its capacity, will ultimately be five times the size of Dubai International and able to serve 260 million passengers annually.

While the Dubai World Central (DWC) expansion is not included in the 2023 impact results, it is expected to contribute an additional AED 6.1 billion to Dubai's GDP and 132,000 jobs by 2030.

Aviation is also a critical driver of tourism, with international visitors in 2023 contributing an estimated AED 66 billion to Dubai's economy, staying an average of 3.8 nights and spending AED 4,300 on hotels, dining, attractions, and shopping. Aviation-facilitated tourism accounted for AED 43 billion in gross value added (GVA) to Dubai's GDP and supported 329,000 jobs. By 2030, this figure is projected to grow to AED 63 billion, contributing 10% of Dubai's GDP and supporting one in eight jobs in the emirate.

A previous report by Oxford Economics from 2014 also found that the aviation sector contributed 27% of Dubai's GDP, but the number of jobs supported has risen significantly, reflecting faster growth and diversification across other sectors of the economy.

Dubai's continued investments in aviation infrastructure, particularly the expansion of Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International, will play a vital role in the emirate's future growth. These developments, aligned with the D33 Economic Agenda, will strengthen Dubai's position as a global logistics and tourism hub, connecting it to 400 new destinations and making it one of the top five logistics centers globally.
The study illustrates the crucial link between aviation and Dubai's broader economic success, emphasizing the role the sector plays in maintaining Dubai's competitiveness on the world stage and its future economic prosperity.

FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Ltd announces Q3 2024 Financial Results.

FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited (FCEPL) announced its financial results for Quarter 3, 2024.

Effective July 1, 2024, an 18% sales tax was imposed on the sale of UHT milk, which was previously zero-rated. In an environment where the disposable income for an average consumer is declining. The imposition of Sales Tax has severely impacted the processed milk category, leading to a significant decline. This also incentivizes the consumption of loose milk, which is unsafe and remains untaxed.
With an agile business model in place, the company continued to drive cost efficiencies across its value chain, effectively mitigating the impact of inflation. The drive for efficiencies led to an improvement in the gross margin by 60 basis points compared to last year. As a result, the year-to-date profit after tax saw a significant increase of 28% from the previous year.

The growth in profit after tax was driven by the enhanced gross margins and a reduction in tax expense.

The purpose of the company continues to be the provision of nutrition for all Pakistanis. Accordingly, the company has continued to advocate with relevant stakeholders to increase awareness around the benefits of UHT Milk and increase accessibility, driving the school milk program and working towards the safe milk city pilot with the Government.


DAIRY-BASED PRODUCTS SEGMENT
The segment reported revenue of Rs. 73.5 billion, reflecting 12% growth compared to the same period last year. The growth was led by flagship brand, Olper's, through a consistent focus on strengthening the value proposition and driving distribution coverage.

Olper's UHT maintained a strong presence in 2024 with the 'Happy Mornings' campaign across key touchpoints, including TV, digital platforms and in-store. The campaign continued to position Olper's as an enabler of Happy Mornings by providing high-quality, nutritious, and delicious milk. These efforts across consumer touchpoints strengthened Olper's leadership in both market share and brand equity within the category.  

Other value-added brands under the Olper's umbrella continued to expand penetration across households through a mix of equity-building campaigns and best in class market execution.

FROZEN DESSERTS SEGMENT

The segment continued to perform with a growth of 11% vs last year. Consistent investment was made towards the Wow Bharay Deserts" campaign to de-seasonalize the category and leverage broader consumption occasions outside the scope of traditional festivities

Meezan Bank announces Financial Results for the Nine Months ended September 30, 2024

The Board of Directors of Meezan Bank approved the financial statements of the Bank for the nine months period ended September 30, 2024. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Riyadh S. A. A. Edrees - Chairman of the Board and Mr. Faisal A. A. A. Al-Nassar - Vice Chairman of the Board was also present along with other Directors.

The Bank posted a Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 77.5 billion up from 58.04 billion in the corresponding period last year, a growth of 34%. The Bank's Annualised Return on Average Equity (ROAE) stands at 50% - demonstrating its continued commitment to maximizing shareholder value. The Basic Earnings Per Share (EPS) increased to Rs 43.26 compared to Rs 32.42 in September 2023. Continuing the tradition of unbroken dividend payout, the Board approved a cash dividend of Rs 7 per share (70%) per share, bringing the total cash dividend payout for the nine months to Rs 21 per share (210%).



Total assets of the Bank crossed Rs. 3.3 trillion, registering a 12% growth over December, 2023. The Bank maintains superior asset quality with non-performing financing ratio of below 2%. The Bank maintains a comfortable level of provisions against its non-performing financings with a coverage ratio of 179% – one of the highest in the banking industry. Net spread of the Bank grew to Rs 214.8 billion from Rs 154.6 billion in the same corresponding period last year - a growth of 39%. This impressive growth is attributed to increased volumes and higher average benchmark rates. Additionally, the Bank's non-funded income increased to Rs 18.2 billion from Rs 15.2 billion in the corresponding period last year - a growth of 20%. This growth was driven by notable increase in debit card transactions and trade-related income.

Meezan Bank is one of the largest banks in Pakistan in terms of deposits, which closed at Rs 2.6 trillion by Q3 2024. The Bank continued to maintain its leadership position in Roshan Digital Account (RDA) with a market share of 26% in terms of total RDA inflows in the banking industry of Pakistan. The Bank has a robust physical presence with over 1,000 branches in 339 cities and an extensive network of more than 1,200 ATMs nationwide. Furthermore, the Bank's Mobile Banking App leads in digital innovation, continuously improving the customer experience and supporting the increasing shift toward digital banking.

Meezan Bank maintains a robust capital position, with a Capital Adequacy Ratio of 27.31% - significantly above the minimum regulatory requirement of 11.50%. Furthermore, the Bank's market capitalization has surpassed $1.4 billion, solidifying its position as a leading financial institution in Pakistan.

81 industries shut down in five years due to power crisis, Sindh Assembly told

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly was informed on Monday that around 81 industrial units, including 10 textile mills and five sugar mills, had been closed during the past five years due to the electricity crisis in the province.

Furnishing statement and replies to the lawmakers' written and verbal queries, Parliamentary Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department Ali Ahmed said that the power crisis had affected the industrial activities a lot in the province and the industrialists were concerned and worried about power shortage.

In reply to a question by Leader of Opposition Ali Khurshidi, he said that the provincial government was extending all possible cooperation to industrialists.

The opposition leader expressed his concern over the unsatisfactory replies given by the parliamentary secretary and said that he wanted to know as to how many industrial units were closed and how many new units were established during 2018 to 2023 and added that he had not been given answer of his question.

House unanimously passes Sindh Control of Narcotic Substances Bill

Mr Khurshidi said that the lawmakers were not being given satisfactory replies to their questions.

Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani stood to rescue the parliamentary secretary and said that that question pertained to the labour department and not to the industries and commerce department.

To a question, parliamentary secretary said that around 81 industrial units, including 10 textile mills and a cement factory, were closed during the past five years.

In reply to a verbal question, the parliamentary secretary said that 6,856 units were operational across the province and 915 new industrial units were established.

Provincial narcotic law

The assembly unanimously passed the Sindh Control of Narcotic Substances Bill, 2024 to regulate matters relating to narcotics, synthetic drugs and psychotropic substances, including commonly known ice, meth, crystal, ecstasy and molly.

Under the new law, an officer not below the rank of inspector narcotics control, is authorised to enter without search and arrest warrants any building, place, premises or conveyance if he has information about the concealment of narcotic, drugs and precursor chemicals or controlled substance and methamphetamine.

The authorised narcotics officer can break open any door and remove any other obstacles during raid and arrest any person whom he has reason to believe to have committed an offence punishable under the Act.

The officer in charge of the operation is also required to make video recording of all raids, seizures, inspections and arrests.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Najam Mirza told Dawn that Sindh emerged as the second province to make provincial anti-narcotics law as the KP had earlier in 2019 adopted the provincial anti-narcotics law.

Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani informed the house that as many as 13 licenses had been issued so far for the extraction of subsoil water in the city under the revised rules adopted by the Sindh government for the purpose.

He said that initially 34 licences had been issued for subsoil water extraction under the 2018 law as 20 of them were later rescinded due to violation of the rules.

The house was adjourned to Tuesday.
