Spotify’s $10 Billion Milestone and a Decade of Getting the World to Value Music

Spotify’s $10 Billion Milestone and a Decade of Getting the World to Value Music

Karachi: In 2014, the music industry reached a low point when global recorded music revenues hit $13 billion. Spotify's annual contribution at the time was around $1 billion, with around 15 million paying subscribers. In 2024, Spotify alone paid out a record $10 billion to the music industry — totaling nearly $60 billion since their founding.

It's a milestone that Spotify has achieved as the system that the world's top audio streaming platform has built is working, and where they are now is only the beginning. Today, there are more than 500 million paying listeners across all music streaming services.

There's a vibrant marketplace of streaming services for different types of consumers, each doing its part to normalize the behavior of paying for music streaming. It's been a collective effort. But there are a few things specific to Spotify that make it not only the most popular subscription streaming service but also the highest paying.

Retention is priority number one, and retention is driven by personalization, curation, and product innovation. Fans like the recommendations, the expert editorial curation, and surprise-and-delight moments like AI DJ, daylist, and Wrapped, as well as the access to non-music content. They keep coming back, discovering more new artists, and retaining their subscriptions.

Spotify offers an ad-supported free tier. Beyond the ad dollars this generates, more than 60% of Premium subscribers were once free tier users. Bringing in users who don't expect to pay for music, and deepening their engagement, means they're more inclined to become subscribers in the future.

A decade ago, there was a widely held view that you couldn't monetize certain markets. But the journey of getting the world to pay for music means making long-term investments. Today, Spotify is seeing tremendous growth across markets like India, Brazil, Mexico, and Nigeria. These are places where the platform's investments are paying off.

"In the pre-streaming era, you were either in the club or not. If you didn't have a label deal or the means to distribute your music worldwide, you weren't one of the few thousand artists on shelves at a record store or one of the 40 in rotation on a radio station. Now, you can record something today and have it on Spotify tomorrow. Even better, payments to the music industry have shifted from a concentrated few at the top to an increasingly diverse and growing ecosystem of artists finding success", said  David Kaefer, VP, Music Business, Spotify.

"Case in point, Spotify estimated that, in 2014, around 10,000 artists generated at least $10,000 per year on Spotify. Today, well over 10,000 artists generate over $100,000 per year from Spotify alone", he added.

The global value of music copyright today sits at $45.5 billion. Spotify's goal is to help artists get their work in front of existing and future fans, continue to innovate on their behalf, and deliver it in a way that inspires people to pay for it.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Deputy Suraya Bibi's removal sparks anger in Chitral

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Deputy Suraya Bibi's removal sparks anger in Chitral

There is anger in Chitral over the news of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Deputy Suraya Bibi's removal. Not only PTI workers in Chitral but also workers of all parties in Chitral have expressed their anger and grief over this news. They have termed this act as an injustice to Chitral.

Suraya Bibi of Sunni Ittehad Council was elected Deputy Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly by getting 87 votes. Arbab Waseem of PTI (Parliamentarians) got only 19 votes against Suraya Bibi.

Suraya Bibi, an independent candidate supported by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, won the general seat from PK-1 Upper Chitral constituency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and later joined PTI's ally Sunni Ittehad Council.

When Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Babar Saleem Swati announced the victory of Suraya Bibi, he was holding a picture of Imran Khan in his hands.

It should be remembered that in the recent general elections, the polling process was also very enthusiastic in the remote constituency of PK-1 Upper Chitral, where women actively participated in Suraya Bibi's election campaign.

Turkey detains nine people over ski resort hotel fire that killed 76

Turkey detains nine people over ski resort hotel fire that killed 76

ANKARA, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Turkey has detained nine people, including the owner of the hotel, in connection with a deadly fire that claimed the lives of 76 people and injured dozens at a ski resort in western Turkey, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said early Wednesday.

Yerlikaya also reported that the bodies of 45 victims had been handed over to their families, while DNA tests were being conducted to identify the remaining bodies at the forensic institute.

The fire occurred at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Kartalkaya ski resort in the Bolu mountains.

The hotel, where the fire broke out, expressed deep sorrow in a statement on Wednesday and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.

"We are cooperating with authorities to shed light on all aspects of this incident," the statement said. "We are deeply saddened by the losses and want you to know that we share this pain with all our hearts."

The 12-storey hotel, which had 238 registered guests, was consumed by flames after the fire started on the restaurant floor around 3:30 a.m. (0030 GMT). Survivors described scenes of panic as they fled through smoke-filled corridors and jumped from windows to escape.

Authorities are facing growing criticism over the hotel's safety measures, as survivors reported that no fire alarms went off during the incident. Guests said they had to navigate the smoke-filled corridors in complete darkness.
Thousands of Islamic State fighters are held inside this heavily fortified prison guarded by Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria.

President Tayyip Erdogan declared Wednesday a day of national mourning following the tragedy, which occurred during the peak of the winter tourism season, with many families from Istanbul and Ankara travelling to the Bolu mountains for skiing.

CCP clears 95.59% share acquisition of Alfalah Securities by Optimus Capital

CCP clears 95.59% share acquisition of Alfalah Securities by Optimus Capital

ISLAMABAD (APP -  January 20, 2025): The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has approved the acquisition of a 95.59 percent shareholding in Alfalah Securities (Private) Limited (ASPL) by Optimus Capital Management (Private) Limited (OCMPL) under a Share Purchase Agreement, following a comprehensive competition assessment.

The CCP identified the relevant product market as 'brokerage services', encompassing services provided by equity brokers for executing trading orders and related activities, said a press release issued here on Monday.

The assessment concluded that ASPL's considerably low market share ensures that the transaction does not establish a dominant market position for OCMPL.

The equity brokerage services market in Pakistan remains diverse and accessible, with regulatory oversight provided by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The consolidation is expected to drive efficiency gains and elevate service standards within the market.

While the transaction will slightly increase OCMPL's market share, the CCP found no substantial concerns regarding potential unilateral or coordinated anti-competitive effects. The equity brokerage market in Pakistan continues to demonstrate resilience and accessibility, ensuring healthy competition.

Optimus Capital Management (Private) Limited is a privately-owned company incorporated under the laws of Pakistan, specializing in equity brokerage services, including stock and securities trading in the capital markets. Alfalah Securities (Private) Limited, also a privately-owned company, focuses on equity brokerage services, offering trading solutions in equity markets.

PESHAWAR, Jan 16 (APP):Pakistan is increasingly experiencing the impacts of climate change, calling for immediate action to turn these challenges into opportunities.Pakistani cuisine recipes

Sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and public awareness initiatives are key to combating this crisis. Collective efforts can yield positive changes not only for Pakistan but also on a global scale.

In response to these challenges, the Umeed Project, supported by the U.S. Consulate General Peshawar and the Center for Social Education and Development, organized workshops in Malakand, Swat, and Abbottabad.
According to a press release of Umeed Project on Thursday, the workshops emphasized interfaith collaboration, guiding participants on mobilizing their communities for environmental conservation.

The training program, comprising six workshops, brought together religious leaders, local government representatives, civil society members, media professionals, and youth organizations. This diverse participation ensured a comprehensive approach to addressing climate challenges.

Participants acknowledged climate change as a "crisis of survival" for both urban and rural communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They explored strategies for collaboration, addressing environmental challenges, and encouraging community engagement. Religious leaders committed to incorporating environmental conservation into their sermons, lectures, and gatherings to raise awareness and inspire action.

The workshops highlighted the critical roles of youth and women in addressing climate change. Participants agreed to involve these groups in community action projects under the Umeed Project. They recognized that empowered youth and women can provide sustainable solutions and drive effective campaigns against climate change.Pakistani cuisine recipes

Institutional collaboration was identified as essential for implementing grassroots environmental initiatives. Religious leaders were seen as key connectors between citizens and policymakers, strengthening the foundation for effective and sustainable climate action.

Media was also acknowledged as a vital tool for promoting interfaith collaboration and raising awareness about combating climate change.

The workshops fostered unity among religious leaders, emphasizing their shared ethical responsibility to advocate for environmental protection. This unified approach reflects the understanding that safeguarding the environment is a collective duty.

To address climate change effectively, Pakistan needs a comprehensive national strategy. Government agencies, private sectors, civil society, and individuals must work together to preserve natural resources, promote sustainable development, and ensure a secure and prosperous future for coming generations. Although challenging, the resilience and determination of the people of Pakistan provide hope for overcoming this crisis.

Policy Dialogue on Climate Action Fellowship 2024 concludes in Islamabad.

Islamabad: The Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), in collaboration with the US Mission in Pakistan, successfully hosted the final Policy Dialogue for the Climate Action Fellowship 2024 at F-11 College, Islamabad. The event marked the culmination of a yearlong fellowship that empowered 50 educators from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as climate champions, catalysing grassroots efforts into tangible policy recommendations.

With the global climate crisis intensifying, KP faces disproportionate risks due to its fragile ecosystems, frequent floods, and glacial melt. Educators are uniquely positioned to mitigate these challenges through awareness and action.

"This fellowship enabled collective action through educators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa" said Dr Fozia Parveen, Assistant Professor at AKU-IED and Principal Investigator of the fellowship. "By connecting grassroots initiatives to governance, we aim to drive sustainable, long-term change." The culmination event also launched two books published by the fellows, one fiction novel and another short story compilation as well as a student contribution from Chitral.

The dialogue brought together policymakers, educational experts, and fellows to discuss integrating climate change education into provincial and national frameworks. Senior representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Climate Change, and KP government attended the event.

Whilst signing the Letter of Notification,  Mr Masood Ahmad, Secretary, Elementary & Secondary Education Department, KP highlighted "This project has provided opportunities for teacher of KP passionate about environment to drive local action, we in the department would like to welcome such initiatives in future as well, as climate change is impacting us everyday"

The event featured presentations on fellowship outcomes and grassroots initiatives, a policy dialogue aligning climate education with national priorities and a showcase of 50 grassroots projects, including reforestation and waste management campaigns.

A panel discussion featured esteemed panelists and senior educationists, including: Dr A.H. Nayyer – Renowned Pakistani Physicist and Scholar; Sarah Mehmood - Manager Environment and Social Safeguarding, WWF; Dr Qaisar Imran – Manager Research, National Institute of Disaster Management; Dr Farid Panjwani, Professor and Dean, AKU-IED; and Dr Riaz Hussain, Assistant Professor and Head, Professional Development Centre Chitral, AKU-IED.

The fellowship's top 20 projects received incentives to promote scalability and sustainability. Fellows emphasized the urgent need for curriculum reforms, teacher training, and collaboration with local communities to advance climate education.

The Climate Action Fellowship 2024 is a joint initiative of AKU-IED and the U.S. Mission in Pakistan. By building capacity and fostering collaboration, it underscores the key role of education in addressing the climate crisis and bridging the gap between policy and practice.
