Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited builds local factory for ZYN Oral Nicotine Pouches

Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited builds local factory for ZYN Oral Nicotine Pouches

Philip Morris (Pakistan) Limited (PMPKL), one of the leading cigarette manufacturers in Pakistan, has taken a major step towards facilitating access to better combustion-free alternatives to adult smokers by localizing the manufacturing of ZYN Oral Nicotine Pouches at its Sahiwal facility. The localization process is in two steps beginning with the packaging of imported raw materials into finished goods which has already begun. The process will be expanded into end-to-end manufacturing of the nicotine pouches locally in the second phase.

The localization of ZYN in Pakistan follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization of the marketing of ZYN nicotine pouches in the US, validating their potential as a less harmful alternative for adults who smoke and/or use other tobacco products. This regulatory milestone marks a significant step forward in tobacco harm reduction, achieved after a thorough scientific evaluation that demonstrated the product's potential as a better alternative to smoking. Addressing the significance of this authorization, Ricketts, Nikolaus President Global Commercial Oral Products noted: "This authorization from the U.S FDA is a strong validation of our commitment to tobacco harm reduction. This regulatory development sets an important precedent that could influence global policies to drive a notable reduction in smoking rates, contributing positively towards public health."

Recognizing the importance of better alternatives to cigarettes in Pakistan, Ali Takesh, Managing Director, Pakistan & Afghanistan, PMPKL, said: "Providing less harmful alternatives to adults that would otherwise continue to smoke is at the core of our ambition at PMPKL in line with Philip Morris International's global vision to be a predominantly smoke-free company by 2030. Localizing ZYN production shows our dedication to offering combustion-free alternatives to adults who would otherwise continue to use traditional tobacco products. This switch will take time, but we are making significant efforts to accelerate the shift."

This initiative also brings economic advantages by reducing reliance on imports and fostering industrial growth in the country. Hussain Ali, Director Manufacturing, PMPKL Sahiwal, highlighted this aspect, stating: "Localized production of ZYN at our Sahiwal facility marks a crucial milestone for PMPKL. This not only supports our economy by reducing import dependency but also ensures accessibility to better alternatives for adult smokers, which can help them transition away from smoking."

Through this initiative, PMPKL continues to drive progress in tobacco harm reduction while contributing to economic development by investing in innovation and local production.

Nasir Adeeb Reflects on His Daughter's Acting Skills and Career Choices

Popular Pakistani filmmaker Nasir Adeeb recently shared that he gave his daughter, Zoya Nasir, one piece of advice before she entered the entertainment industry. Nasir Adeeb, known for delivering numerous hit films in the Lollywood industry, has been making headlines with his podcast appearances where he reveals facts about the Pakistani film industry and actors.

In a recent YouTube show appearance, Nasir Adeeb discussed his daughter's acting skills and career in showbiz. He stated that if Zoya's career remains stagnant over the years, it indicates a lack of quality work. Nasir emphasized that he has never recommended his daughter for any roles.

Nasir Adeeb's Stance on Support and Recommendations

Nasir Adeeb mentioned that he advised his daughter not to expect any support from him as he would not request work for her. He also never considered writing a film for her, as he generally writes Punjabi-style films.

Zoya Nasir's Potential in TV Dramas

Nasir Adeeb acknowledged that Zoya Nasir might not be suitable for films but is an excellent choice for TV dramas, having performed well in several series. He highlighted that if she has talent and is capable of good work, she will achieve a prominent position in the industry on her own, as talent cannot be stopped.

Family Dynamics and Industry Challenges

Regarding his daughter's entry into showbiz, Nasir Adeeb revealed that while he was never against it, her brother disapproved and tried to prevent her from joining the industry. Nasir emphasized that the film industry itself is not flawed, but some individuals within it can be problematic. Therefore, he made only one request to his daughter before she entered the industry.

Nasir Adeeb's request to his daughter was simple: not to engage in any actions that would bring shame to her father in the showbiz industry.

He shared that the company has successfully launched courier and freight services in Pakistan, catering to growing logistics needs with fast and reliable delivery solutions. He further added that inDrive's courier service has played a crucial role for small businesses, particularly during peak seasons. In February last year, the platform saw a twofold surge in deliveries, reinforcing its increasing reliability among users.

Speaking about the company's long-term commitment to Pakistan, Awais disclosed that Pakistan remains a strategic market for inDrive's global growth. The company is working to enhance its ride-hailing offerings by introducing premium services such as Business class, while also actively exploring electric vehicle (EV) rides in line with global sustainability trends.

While responding to a question on inDrive's global investments, Awais briefly mentioned that the company had made a strategic investment in Krave Mart in December last year. This investment is part of inDrive's $100 million global venture capital initiative aimed at supporting startups in emerging markets. However, he reiterated that inDrive's primary focus remains on enhancing mobility services and creating lasting economic impact in Pakistan.

With a mission to challenge injustice and make the world a fairer place, inDrive aims to impact the lives of 1 billion people by 2030. In Pakistan, inDrive has donated PKR 10 million to the Akhuwat Foundation for the reconstruction of schools in Thatta and Thar, areas severely impacted by the 2022 floods. This initiative aimed to restore access to education for children and support community rehabilitation. Additionally,  the inDrive Rozgar initiative, through which the company invested PKR 7.5 million to establish 100 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in partnership with HANDS Pakistan. This initiative was designed to create sustainable livelihoods and promote economic independence across major cities.

"We organised the "Ride to Donate" (RTD) project in Pakistan last year. This initiative was aimed at empowering youth through sports, focusing on improving school sports facilities in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. With the Global project "YourPace" we launched three sports facilities in Karachi and Islamabad and we impacted 5K+ kids through this initiative.

We will be launching another Ride to Donate project in Ramadan and will build sports facilities in underprivileged schools" added Awais.

While discussing inDrive's expansion into Pakistan's tech sector, Awais revealed that the company is setting up an IT development initiative in Lahore, engaging local tech talent to contribute to its global operations. He added that this initiative will not only enhance inDrive's technological capabilities but also generate employment opportunities for Pakistani professionals in the global mobility sector.
As the company deepens its presence, expands its services, and strengthens partnerships, inDrive continues to drive positive change, setting new benchmarks for mobility and urban services in Pakistan.

Bank of Punjab Achieves Record Profitability, Declares Highest-Ever Dividend

Bank of Punjab Achieves Record Profitability, Declares Highest-Ever Dividend

The Bank of Punjab achieves its highest profitability and announces a record cash dividend, the highest-ever since its inception in 1989

A meeting of the Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) was held on 17th February 2025 to review and approve the Annual Audited Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2024.

Despite facing challenges on both the revenue and expenditure sides, including the implementation of IFRS-9, the debt restructuring of a large state-owned entity, a difficult interest rate environment, the MDR anomaly, and significant investments in technology and infrastructure, the Bank posted a pre-tax profit of Rs. 24.56 billion for the year 2024. The Board also declared a cash dividend of Rs. 1.8 per share, marking a historic milestone with the highest-ever profit and the largest cash dividend payout in the bank's 35-year history.

Total deposits grew to PKR 1,710 billion from PKR 1,521 billion in 2023. A significant contributor to this growth was the 24% increase in current account deposits, which rose to PKR 354 billion and now constitute 20.7% of total deposits. These deposits have more than doubled over the past three years.

The balance sheet expanded to PKR 2,380 billion, further strengthening the bank's financial and capital position. Revenue growth remained strong across all segments, particularly in fee income and capital gains etc., which grew by 51% during the year. The Board acknowledged that the cost-to-income ratio improved to 60.76% (adjusted) in 2024. Based on September 2024 results, the Bank maintained the lowest cost per employee at PKR 2.4 million against a peer average of PKR 3.6 million, the second-lowest cost per branch at PKR 45.5 million against a peer average of PKR 56.3 million, and a total administrative cost-to-gross revenue ratio of 12.2% compared to the industry average of 15.0%, demonstrating strong cost discipline and operational efficiency. With a continued focus on improving the composition of current accounts within total deposits and the removal of minimum deposit rate conditions on public sector deposits, the cost-to-income ratio is expected to improve further in the coming years.

The Board also approved BOP's inaugural dividend policy, which explores the possibility of interim/quarterly dividends, moving beyond the conventional annual model, with a preference for cash dividends over bonus shares. This shift aims to strengthen investor confidence and attract long-term institutional investments, backed by projected stability in BOP's earnings.

Looking ahead, the Board approved the strategic roadmap for 2025-27, focusing on growth, capital build-up, digital innovation, and cost efficiency. A key priority is the acceleration of the transition to a fully Shariah-compliant banking model, in line with SBP guidelines. Additionally, the Bank will continue expanding its digital services with enhanced cybersecurity measures and will introduce AI-powered financial solutions to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

The Board commended BOP's management for its pivotal role in executing key initiatives under the Chief Minister of Punjab's programs, including the Kissan Card, Livestock Card, Student Bike Scheme, Dhee Rani Card, Minority Card, and Asaan Karobar Finance & Card Schemes, all of which have been facilitated through BOP's robust digital banking infrastructure. Furthermore, the Bank has played a key role in the successful execution of the CM Punjab Apni Chat Apna Ghar scheme, which facilitates home financing for low- and middle-income families.

The Board recognized that, with a clear vision, strong leadership, and a robust financial position, BOP is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory, delivering greater value to its customers, investors, and the broader economy.

Launch of Pakistan’s Motor Insurance Repository, powered by CDC Pakistan

Launch of Pakistan’s Motor Insurance Repository, powered by CDC Pakistan

Karachi: Under the guidance of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), in collaboration with Insurance Association of Pakistan (IAP) and industry participants, Central Depository Company of Pakistan Limited (CDCPL) is set to revolutionize the motor insurance landscape with the launch of Pakistan's Centralized Motor Insurance Repository. This pioneering initiative aims to enhance transparency, improve underwriting practices, and combat insurance fraud by providing a centralized database for motor insurance policies.

The Repository was launched by SECP Chairman Mr. Akif Saeed and CDC CEO Mr. Badiuddin Akber at the InsureImpact Conference Pakistan (ICP) 2025, themed "Journey to an Insured Pakistan – Fostering Collaboration, Engagement & Innovation on 12th February in Karachi. SECP, in its 2023 report on Motor Third Party (MTP) Insurance, recommended the establishment of a motor insurance repository to address key challenges in the industry.

According to the report, motor vehicle insurance coverage in Pakistan remains significantly low compared to neighboring countries. With less than 3% of vehicles insured in Pakistan, the need for this repository has never been more critical. In contrast, countries like Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have significantly higher insurance coverage rates at 36%, and 73%, respectively, demonstrating positive trends in the region.

Currently, the Motor Insurance Repository caters to Phase 1 by establishing a data repository for cross industry data sharing and regulatory oversight. Phase 2 will integrate with registration authorities for real-time insurance status verification, enhancing transparency and compliance. Phase 3 will cater to adding claims related data and integrations with other authorities (motorway, licensing) and other value-added features for insurers as well as policy holders.

Insurance partners onboarded include Adamjee Insurance Company Limited, Alfalah Insurance Company Limited, Asia Insurance, Atlas Insurance Limited, Century Insurance Company Limited, East West Insurance Co., Ltd., EFU General Insurance Limited, Habib Insurance Limited, IGI General Insurance Limited, Jubilee General Insurance Limited, Premier Insurance, Salaam Takaful Limited, Shaheen Insurance Company Limited, TPL Insurance Limited and United Insurance Company of Pakistan Limited.
