Spotify Delivers Another Strong Quarter; Premium Subscribers and Profitability Continue Upward Trend

Spotify released its Q2 2025 earnings today, highlighting accelerating growth in subscriber and Monthly Active Users (MAUs), alongside continued improvements in profitability. In the first half of 2025, subscriber net additions grew more than 30% compared to the first half of 2024, and this marks the company’s second highest Q2 for MAU net additions. Notable highlights from the Q2 report include:

●        Premium Subscribers grew 12% Y/Y to 276 million, driven by strong performance in both mature and emerging markets.

●        Monthly Active Users (MAUs) rose to 696 million with adding 18 million which is the second highest Q2 MAU net adds in history.

●        Total Revenue grew to €4.2 billion, reflecting a solid 10% Y/Y growth.

●        Gross Margin in line with guidance and reached basis points 31.5%.

●        Operating Income reached €406 million, underlining the strength of Spotify’s operating model and sustained cost discipline.

ECP Disqualifies Another PTI Legislator, Abdul Latif Chitrali, Over May 9 Conviction

National Assembly Seat Vacant as PTI's Chitrali Disqualified Following 10-Year Sentence

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified another Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislator, Abdul Latif Chitrali, and declared his National Assembly seat (NA-1, Upper and Lower Chitral) vacant. This decision follows the denotification of his electoral victory, which came after an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sentenced Chitrali to 10 years in prison for his involvement in the violent events of May 9. The official ECP notification explicitly stated that Chitrali stands disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, marking a significant consequence in the aftermath of the widespread unrest.

This action by the ECP is part of a series of disqualifications targeting PTI lawmakers convicted in connection with the May 9 riots. Just a day prior, the ECP issued similar disqualification notifications for three other PTI figures: Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, MNA Muhammad Ahmad Chattha, and Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar. All three were also handed 10-year prison sentences under anti-terrorism charges by an ATC. These rulings underscore the government's firm stance on holding individuals accountable for their roles in the civil and military installations targeted during the unrest.

The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, leading to widespread protests where PTI leaders and workers allegedly targeted key installations, including Jinnah House and the GHQ in Rawalpindi. The military condemned these events as a "Black Day," leading to arrests and trials under the Army Act. While some convictions have occurred, including those of Imran Khan’s nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and Dr. Yasmin Rashid, an ATC Lahore recently acquitted six PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Hamza Azeem, in connection with the same riots, highlighting the varied outcomes of the ongoing legal proceedings.

Indian Air Force to Retire All Remaining MiG-21s by September

End of an Era: India Phasing Out Its Controversial MiG-21 Fleet

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to retire its entire remaining fleet of Russian MiG-21 fighter jets by September 2025. These aircraft, which have served as the IAF's "workhorse" for six decades since their induction in 1963, gained notoriety for their vulnerability after one was shot down by Pakistan in February 2019, leading to the capture of its pilot. The retirement will involve a ceremonial decommissioning of the remaining two active MiG-21 Bison squadrons at the Chandigarh airbase on September 19th.

India had procured over 700 MiG-21 aircraft of various variants over the years. The phasing out of this aging fleet was initially planned for 2022 but was delayed due to setbacks in inducting newer fighter jets, including the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, which are intended as replacements. Between 2017 and 2024, at least four MiG-21 squadrons were already retired, and the complete phasing out will further reduce the IAF's active fighter squadron strength, which currently stands at 31 against a sanctioned strength of 42.

Despite numerous upgrades to the MiG-21 Bison variant over the past three decades, including improvements to avionics, radar, and electronic warfare systems, the core limitations of its engine performance and load-carrying capacity due to the airframe remained. While the supersonic jet played a significant role in India's wars and conflicts, it also earned a mixed reputation due to numerous crashes. Estimates suggest India has lost over 400 MiG-21 jets since their induction, resulting in the deaths of over 100 pilots and some civilians.

Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan agrees to enhance trade volume upto US$100mln

ISLAMABAD (APP - Jul 28, 2025 ): Federal Minister for Power Division and Energy Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari said that Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan trade and economic relations will continue to serve as a foundation of our bilateral partnership.

However, it is a matter of concern that the bilateral trade volume has declined significantly, from USD 11.2 million in 2022-23 to USD 5.18 million in 2024.25.

The minister said, “We acknowledge the pressing need to revitalize our trade engagement and reaffirm our shared aspiration to elevate bilateral trade upto USD 100 million”.

He was addressing at 5th Session of the Pakistan-Kyrgyzstan Inter-Governmental Commission and welcomed to the

Baisalov Edil Zholdybaevich, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, honourable delegates from the Kyrgyz Republic and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

He said that Baisalov Edil Zholdybaevich and esteemed delegates to Islamabad for the 5th Session of the Pakistan-Kyrgyzstan Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade-Economic and Scientific-Technical Cooperation. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our Kyrgyz counterparts for their continued engagement and shared commitment to a prosperous and interconnected future for our two nations.

Pakistan and the Kyrgyz Republic share longstanding relations, founded on deep-rooted cultural, historical, and spiritual affinities. Since the formalization of our economic relationship in 1994, we have made notable progress across various sectors. This session marks yet another important milestone in our collective journey of strengthening and institutionalizing our bilateral partnership.

Under the framework of this Commission, our cooperation has steadily expanded across a broad spectrum—ranging from trade and investment to tourism, agriculture, energy, science and technology and education. It is heartening to witness the growing momentum, despite the challenges that continue to affect global and regional economic landscapes.

Achieving this goal will require consistent and collaborative efforts across multiple sectors.

The revival of the Pakistan-Kyrgyz Joint Business Council (JBC), sustained B2B interactions, and the early finalization of key Memorandum of Understanding on Electronic Data Interchange between customs authorities, are essential steps forward.

The minister said that “We also take positive note of the inaugural meeting of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment, and now look ahead to expediting progress on the Pakistan-Kyrgyz Transit Trade Agreement, a key initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating seamless cross-border trade. Signing of another Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation in Halal Trade is a step towards achieving our shared goals”.

Investment remains a key area of priority and potential for both our countries. Positive steps have already been taken, including the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the National Investments Agency of Kyrgyzstan and the Board of Investment of Pakistan.

This agreement provides a solid foundation for targeted engagement in high-potential sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, minerals, tourism, and information technology.

Pakistan also appreciate Kyrgyzstan’s offer of access to the At-Bashi Logistics Center for Pakistan’s National Logistics Corporation (NLC), which stands as a commendable example of enterprise-level cooperation, and one that we also hope to replicate across other domains. To foster broader private sector participation, we encourage both sides to enhance the online visibility of investment opportunities by providing comprehensive and up-to-date information on Special Economic Zones (SEZs), tax incentives, and priority sectors.

Tourism and cultural exchange serve as powerful conduits for deepening people-to-people connectivity. Both Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan, endowed with stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage, stand to gain significantly from closer collaboration in this domain. We look forward to finalizing the MoU on Tourism, Hospitality, and Investment, and to expanding the exchange of tour operators and tourism-related information, including active participation in international exhibitions.

Likewise, the signing of Memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of Agriculture is a pivotal step towards promoting trade in Kyrgyz legumes and the export of Pakistan’s Basmati rice, among other value-added food products. Enhanced collaboration on veterinary and phytosanitary controls will further facilitate safe and efficient food trade.

Both Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan share a vision of green and sustainable development. We are aligned on exploring Pakistan’s participation in the proposed 500 kV Torugart–XUAR–Gilgit Baltistan transmission line, which would establish a strategic Kyrgyzstan–China–Pakistan electricity grid. We also welcome Kyrgyz interest in investing in Pakistan’s mining sector, particularly in copper and gold exploration.

Moreover, strengthening transport and communication infrastructure remains critical for the realization of our economic potential. We anticipate progress on the postal cooperation agreement, operationalization of cargo under the 1995 International Motor Transportation Agreement, and improvements in e-commerce connectivity. We are also encouraged by discussions on expanding air and rail links, including flight frequency increases.

The financial sector serves as a vital engine for economic growth. We appreciate the mutual interest in enhancing interbank and financial cooperation, particularly in Islamic banking and financial innovation. The recent agreement between the State Bank of Pakistan and the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic for joint training programs is a constructive step toward deepening institutional collaboration.

The health sector also offers significant and strategic opportunities for advancing our bilateral cooperation. We remain optimistic about the early finalization of the MoU on Higher Medical Education, and commend Kyrgyzpharmacia for its engagement with Pakistani pharmaceutical firms, particularly in exploring the supply of Pakistani pharmaceutical products to the Kyrgyz Republic and potential joint ventures in vaccine production in collaboration with the National Institute of Health. We further underscore the importance of regulatory alignment and the need to streamline the registration process for Pakistani medicines in Kyrgyzstan, which will help ensure timely access and promote greater commercial collaboration in the health sector.

The cultural sector serves as a vital bridge, fostering mutual understanding and enriching the shared heritage between our nations. It is essential that we translate these affinities into formal institutional mechanisms. The finalization of the Agreement on Culture, alongside the organization of joint cultural events, will significantly deepen people-to-people connections.

Youth engagement also presents a dynamic platform for cultivating future leaders and strengthening the bonds of friendship between our peoples. Through conferences, seminars on youth policy issues, and the exchange of experiences, we can empower our younger generations to carry forward this partnership.

Education forms the cornerstone of our partnership, serving as a catalyst for knowledge exchange and capacity building to advance sustainable development. Our efforts remain focused on collaboration in STEAM training, academic exchanges, and joint research initiatives. Audit Uncovers Major Discrepancy: Over 80 Livestock Department Vehicles Missing in KP

KP Livestock Dept Under Scrutiny as Audit Reveals Mass Disappearance of Government Vehicles

An audit report has uncovered a major scandal within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Livestock Department, revealing that 80 government vehicles have mysteriously gone missing. This significant discovery raises serious questions about accountability and transparency within the provincial department.

According to official sources and the audit documents themselves, the Livestock Department was unable to provide any records or justification for these 80 vehicles during the audit process. Compounding the issue, the Excise Department confirmed that over 80 vehicles remain registered under the name of the Director General (DG) Livestock, yet none of these could be located in any departmental office or field location. The audit report not only flags the missing vehicles as a critical concern but also casts considerable doubt on the overall transparency of the department's operations.

Sources indicate that over 200 vehicles were acquired for various livestock projects between 2007 and 2021. However, a substantial portion of these assets now appears to have vanished without a trace. The audit report strongly recommends that the whereabouts of these missing government vehicles be traced and accounted for as soon as possible.

In response to the escalating scandal, KP's Minister for Livestock, Fazal Hakim, has stated he issued strict orders to gather all departmental vehicles. He also confirmed that the Secretary of Livestock has dispatched official letters to all relevant departments, urging their cooperation in the recovery of the missing government assets.

Loans of up to PKR 1 million to benefit almost 350 farmers and 2,000 lives

Karachi: Engro Fertilizers, a major fertilizer company in Pakistan, and Bank Alfalah Limited, Pakistan’s leading commercial bank, announced a strategic partnership aimed at empowering farmers across the country through enhanced lending facilities. This collaboration will extend financing of up to PKR 1 million to farmers registered through Engro Markaz outlets and UgAi – the first integrated agricultural e-commerce platform for Pakistan.

The signing ceremony took place at Bank Alfalah’s Head Office in Karachi and was attended by senior leadership from both the organizations, including Ali Rathore, CEO of Engro Fertilizers; Atif Bajwa, President and CEO of Bank Alfalah Limited; Atif Mohammad Ali, Vice President of Marketing at Engro Fertilizers; along with other senior executives. 

The pilot initiative will be launched with a total funding allocation of PKR 250 million (comprising both secured and unsecured components), offering average loan amounts of approximately PKR 0.6 million to 300–350 farmers. With an estimated reach of up to 2,000 beneficiaries, the program marks a critical step in forging a direct value chain between the fertilizer provider, the financing institution, and the end-user farmer, ensuring resources flow efficiently from source to soil with a robust value-chain. Currently, the program will be accessible through four Engro Markaz locations across Pakistan: Sahiwal, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, and Muridke.

The project is designed to enhance financial access for farmers, providing them with clean and collateral-based lending solutions tailored to their needs. These credit facilities offer subsidized interest rates up to 4.5% lower than the market rates, enabling farmers to purchase high-quality Engro fertilizer products, directly contributing to improved crop yields, and a significant increase in their overall income and livelihood. The collaboration also features for digitization of payments and implementation of a closed loop spending solution via P2M (Person-to-Merchant) transaction enablement.

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023–24, credit facilitation played a major role in driving improved crop yields during FY2024, leading to a significant impact of agricultural financing on national food security and rural productivity. According to the World Bank, access to agricultural finance can make farming up to four times more effective in reducing poverty highlighting the transformative impact of inclusive credit systems on rural livelihoods.

1000 KG Donkey Meat Recovered - In Islamabad Food Authority Raids

The Islamabad Food Authority conducted a surprise raid in the Tarnol area, uncovering a significant illegal operation involving donkey meat. During the operation, officials discovered over 50 donkeys and 1,000 kilograms of processed meat on the spot. Initial investigations suggest that this large quantity of meat was being prepared for supply to foreign markets.

Major Bust: Donkey Meat Prepared for Foreign Markets Seized in Tarnol

Following the successful raid, the Director of the Food Authority immediately ordered the registration of a case against all individuals involved in the illicit activity. The confiscated donkey meat was promptly disposed of under strict supervision at the site of the discovery. Deputy Director Dr. Tahira Sadiq confirmed that a foreign national found at the location was handed over to the police for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also launched efforts to trace any areas where this illegally processed meat might have already been supplied.

Donkey Meat Seizure Islamabad

This incident follows similar actions by food safety watchdogs in other parts of the country. Last year, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) imposed cumulative fines totaling Rs 270,000 on nine eateries and issued warning notices to two food points during an operation led by Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid. During these inspections, PFA teams discarded large quantities of expired ketchup, prohibited Chinese salt, and 72 liters of substandard used cooking oil in areas like Johar Town and on Shaukat Khanam Road.

The PFA's actions were taken against food business operators (FBOs) for various violations, including frying food in rancid oil, failing to maintain records of expired food items, poor storage systems, the presence of prohibited food ingredients, and unhygienic conditions in kitchen premises. The Director General emphasized that, under special instructions from the Punjab Chief Minister, every food business, regardless of size, would be thoroughly inspected, particularly before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, to ensure public health and safety.

Donkey Meat Operation Uncovered in Islamabad

Islamabad Food Authority Raids Farmhouse, Seizes Donkey Meat

The Islamabad Food Authority has launched an operation after uncovering the illegal sale of donkey meat within the capital city. The discovery was made in the Tarnol area, where a foreign national is allegedly involved in the illicit trade.

Acting on information, the Food Authority raided a farmhouse in Tarnol, finding several live donkeys on the premises. During the raid, a significant quantity of already butchered donkey meat was also recovered. Officials on site immediately destroyed the seized meat, while the live donkeys were taken into custody.

A substantial police force accompanied the Food Authority during the operation to ensure security and facilitate the raid. Authorities have not yet released the identity or nationality of the implicated foreign national. Islamabad Food Authority officials have confirmed that further investigations are ongoing, and legal action is expected against those responsible for this illegal sale, raising serious concerns about food safety and the need for stricter oversight of meat sales in the capital.

The event itself was symbolic as the Chairman HEC appeared as an holographic Avatar and hosted the event taking the title of becoming the first ever Hologram Host in the history of Pakistan.

HEC’s strategic IT initiatives includes Astrolabes datacenters, As-Sadeem cloud computing solutions, Al-Meissa HPC, Maktab ERP-SLCS, Al-Fihri LMS, Jidar Network Security, and Smart Classroom. These initiatives will further enhance the digital infrastructure of Pakistan's higher education sector, providing students with access to world-class education and skills. The event featured a state-of-the-art digital infrastructure representation, showcasing HEC's achievements in establishing: 7000 Km of fibre connectivity, 20,000 Wi-Fi points in 96 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and several more IT based features in the HEIs across the country. 

The event marked a significant leap in Pakistan's higher education sector, paving the way for a more digitally empowered and educated society as the pilot project of digitizing 25 HEIs across the country is performing well and creating a demand to implement HEC’s IT initiatives in public HEIs across the country.

At this symbolic event the Chairman HEC, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, said that “We have provided the much-needed technological support to the universities and students of Pakistan. Once these technologies are available to the students they can easily compete with best ranking universities of the world while the HEIs can reduce their costs as well.”
