  • CHITRAL (APP -  October 31, 2025): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday performed the groundbreaking of the Daanish School in Chitral, reaffirming his government’s commitment to promoting quality education and socio-economic development in the remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were brave, patriotic, and had played a key role in the progress and security of Pakistan.

He said his elder brother and former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had always remained committed to the development of Pakistan, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Chitral.

Shehbaz Sharif said the Daanish Schools were aimed at providing world-class education to the children of less privileged families in backward areas of the country.

“Daanish Schools are equivalent to Aitchison College in terms of quality education and facilities, but they are meant for the children of common people,” he remarked. “These institutions provide free boarding, education, sports, and all modern facilities.”

He expressed confidence that the standard of education at the Daanish School Chitral would surpass many established institutions in the country.

The prime minister said he had offered full cooperation to the newly elected Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for working together for the province’s development. “I told him that the federal government will extend full support to the KP government for the welfare of the people,” he added.

Highlighting various federal initiatives, he said 100,000 laptops were being distributed among top-performing students across the country under the recently launched PM’s National Laptop Scheme.

The prime minister also announced several new development projects for Chitral, including the establishment of a gas plant, a hospital, and a university in Upper Chitral. He directed that the issue of electricity tariff in Upper Chitral be resolved on priority.

Shehbaz Sharif informed that work on the 153-kilometre Chitral–Shandur Road was already underway and would be completed next year, while the 46-kilometre Chitral–Buni Road would be completed by May. He said the 7-kilometre Lawari Tunnel project had also been completed.

The prime minister reiterated his resolve to eliminate terrorism and promote peace and prosperity across Pakistan. He lauded the armed forces for their sacrifices and professionalism under the leadership of Field Martial and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir and other services chiefs.

He also acknowledged the historic diplomatic intervention by the U.S. President Donald Trump in helping to defuse tensions between Pakistan and India, saying his efforts prevented a potential escalation.

Earlier, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Engr. Amir Muqam said under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s economy was moving in the right direction. He praised the prime minister’s administrative abilities and diplomatic efforts for strengthening the country’s global image.

BoP Posts Splendid 156% Growth In Operating Profit During 9-Months Ended September 30, 2025

BoP Posts Splendid 156% Growth In Operating Profit During 9-Months Ended September 30, 2025

Lahore: In a meeting held on October 30, 2025, the Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) approved the un-audited financial statements for the nine months ended on September 30, 2025. The Board lauded the exceptional performance of the Bank, which has not only exceeded expectations but also delivered unprecedented financial results across all key performance areas.

Despite a challenging macroeconomic backdrop—marked by declining interest rates and rising operating costs across the industry—the Bank sustained margin pressures and achieved exceptional financial performance. Operating profit reached Rs. 28.52 billion, reflecting a remarkable 156% increase over the same period last year. Net Interest Income grew by 91% to Rs. 58.46 billion, reaffirming the Bank's ability to generate strong core earnings. Fee & Commission Income also posted healthy growth of 31%, driven by diversification of revenue streams and deepening client engagement across retail, corporate, and Islamic banking segments.

Operational efficiency remained a central focus, with a notable improvement in the cost-to-income ratio. This was underpinned by disciplined expense management and productivity gains across business lines. Profit Before Tax rose by 81% to Rs. 26.40 billion, compared to Rs. 14.61 billion in the same period last year. Earnings per share increased to Rs. 3.65 from Rs. 2.57, despite the impact of a higher effective tax rate of 53%. These results underscore the Bank's financial resilience and commitment to creating sustainable value for shareholders.

The Balance Sheet remained robust and well-capitalized, with a Capital Adequacy Ratio of 17.43%. Total Assets stood at Rs. 2,536 billion, while Total Deposits grew 20% year-on-year to Rs. 1,885 billion. Current Deposits rose by an impressive 35% year-on-year, reflecting strong customer confidence and the success of targeted deposit-mobilization initiatives. Gross Advances reached Rs. 837 billion, while Total Investments and Lending to Financial Institutions amounted to Rs. 1,463 billion—highlighting a prudent, diversified asset allocation strategy. Exposure under government-sponsored schemes in agriculture, SME, and affordable housing segments remained fully secured through substantial first-loss guarantees, with exceptionally strong recovery levels of 97.5% to 100%, supported by robust collection mechanisms. Liquidity buffers were maintained at comfortable levels, ensuring resilience in volatile market conditions.
BOP continues to serve as a key partner of the Government of Punjab (GoPb) in advancing transformative development and social-uplift initiatives spearheaded by the Honorable Chief Minister, Ms. Maryum Nawaz Sharif. Flagship programs include the CM Punjab Asaan Karobar Scheme, CM Punjab Kissan Card, CM Punjab Livestock Card, CM Punjab Petrol/Electric Bike Program, and Apni Chat Apna Ghar, among others. Through these initiatives, the Bank is enabling financial inclusion, empowering farmers and small businesses, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

In addition, the Bank has been entrusted with the large-scale disbursement of financial relief to flood-affected communities, while also maintaining a leadership position in Federal Government-sponsored schemes.

This record-breaking performance is a testament to the Bank's clear strategic vision, disciplined execution, and unwavering commitment to value creation. By prioritizing innovation, digital transformation, and a customer-centric approach, BOP has positioned itself for sustained growth. These achievements reaffirm the strength of its business model and its ability to adapt effectively to evolving market dynamics, while consistently delivering value to all stakeholders.
Six Soldiers Martyred, Seven Terrorists Killed in Kurram Operation Against India-Backed Militants

Six Soldiers Martyred, Seven Terrorists Killed in Kurram Operation Against India-Backed Militants

Six Pakistan Army soldiers, including Captain Noman Saleem, were martyred while seven terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Dogar area of Kurram District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation targeted India-backed Fitna al-Khawarij terrorists. Captain Noman, a 24-year-old medical officer from Mianwali, fought valiantly alongside his men before embracing martyrdom. The other fallen heroes included Havildar Amjad Ali, Naik Waqas Ahmad, Sepoy Aijaz Ali, Sepoy Muhammad Waleed, and Sepoy Muhammad Shahbaz. A sanitisation operation is ongoing to eliminate any remaining militants under the broader Azm-e-Istehkam campaign.

Six Pakistan Army soldiers, including a young captain, embraced martyrdom in Kurram District during an operation against India-backed Fitna al-Khawarij terrorists, as Islamabad continues to face rising cross-border terrorism from Afghanistan despite peace talks.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the martyred soldiers, praising their courage and reaffirming Pakistan’s resolve to eradicate terrorism. The ISPR emphasized that the armed forces remain fully committed to defending the nation against both domestic and foreign-backed threats. This latest operation underscores Pakistan’s continued struggle against cross-border militancy, which has intensified since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Despite repeated calls for action, the Taliban regime has largely ignored Pakistan’s concerns and continued to provide sanctuary to militant groups.

Tensions escalated further after the Taliban launched unprovoked attacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on October 12, prompting a swift military response from Pakistan that killed over 200 militants. However, the clashes also resulted in the martyrdom of 23 Pakistani soldiers. Subsequent peace talks mediated by Qatar in Doha and Turkiye in Istanbul sought to establish lasting calm but ended without progress. Pakistani officials described the Taliban’s stance during negotiations as “illogical” and “detached from ground realities,” leaving the future of cross-border peace uncertain.

Accompanied by senior PPP figures Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Humayun Khan, and Jameel Soomro, Bilawal engaged in wide-ranging talks with Fazl, who was joined by Maulana Asad Mehmood and Mufti Abrar. Sources described the atmosphere as cordial yet calculated, aimed at rebuilding trust between two key opposition forces that previously aligned under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

Insiders revealed that both sides expressed concern over governance issues, institutional reforms, and the government's economic management. They emphasized the need for constructive political dialogue to help stabilize the national situation.

While no formal alliance or joint strategy was announced, the meeting is being seen as a potential precursor to broader opposition coordination in the lead-up to future elections. Political analysts interpret the renewed engagement as a sign that strategic cooperation—even among former allies with diverging paths—may once again shape Pakistan's political trajectory.

Pakistan’s Tractor Industry in Crisis: Sales Plunge 63% Below 8-Year Average

Al Ghazi CEO Urges National Mechanization Policy to Save Agriculture Sector

Pakistan's tractor industry is facing an alarming downturn, with sales plunging 63% below the eight-year average, according to Sakib Eltaff, CEO of Al Ghazi Tractors. In an interview with Business Recorder, he pointed to economic instability, poor taxation policies, and the absence of a national agricultural mechanization strategy as key contributors. He stressed that this decline threatens Pakistan’s farming-based economy, especially as agriculture contributes over 20% to the national GDP and supports nearly 300,000 livelihoods through its vast supply chain.

Eltaff highlighted that tractor sales in January and February 2025 hit record lows—43% down from the previous year—worsened by delayed deliveries under Punjab’s Green Tractor Scheme. He called for a shift from reactive to long-term policies, citing that Pakistan’s mechanization levels (0.8 HP per acre) lag behind the FAO’s recommended standard of 1.4. He emphasized the role of financial institutions, manufacturers, and policymakers in collaboratively building sustainable solutions that include smart technologies like GPS-enabled tractors and drone-assisted agriculture.

Tractor Prices Soar as Industry Struggles with Decline, Policy Gaps & Credit Access

Despite Al Ghazi’s recent innovation in launching advanced models, including the NH 850 tractor, the industry is hampered by affordability and financing issues. With tractors starting at Rs2.5 million, farmers struggle to access credit due to informal income histories. Eltaff urged banks to develop flexible financing solutions tailored to farmers’ seasonal incomes. He warned that without a national mechanization roadmap and cohesive reform, Pakistan risks undermining food security and the future of its agrarian economy.
