The Bank of Punjab and InfraZamin Pakistan Sign MOU to Expand Agricultural Warehousing Finance Capacity

The Bank of Punjab and InfraZamin Pakistan Sign MOU to Expand Agricultural Warehousing Finance Capacity

The Bank of Punjab (BOP) and InfraZamin Pakistan (IZP) have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening Pakistan's agricultural warehousing infrastructure through a credit guarantee–backed financing framework. This initiative represents a significant move towards enhancing post-harvest storage capacity, mobilizing private-sector investment, and supporting long-term agricultural development in the country.

InfraZamin Pakistan, a pioneering credit enhancement institution jointly sponsored by InfraCo Asia Investments and Karandaaz Pakistan, provides local currency guarantee solutions to encourage private-sector participation in infrastructure financing. With its PACRA-rated long-term AAA and short-term A1+ ratings, InfraZamin continues to play a critical role in enabling sustainable, long-tenor funding for infrastructure projects that traditionally face limited access to institutional finance.

Under the newly signed MOU, The Bank of Punjab and InfraZamin will collaborate on the rollout of the Credit Guarantee–Backed Warehousing Infrastructure Financing Scheme, which seeks to facilitate the construction, expansion, and modernization of agricultural storage facilities nationwide. Through this partnership, BOP is being positioned as a key Participating Financial Institution capable of channeling long-term, local-currency financing to warehouse operators, farmers, and agri-value chain players.

Speaking at the signing, the Group Chief Consumer Banking Group of BOP emphasized that this collaboration will materially enhance the banking sector's capacity to lend in segments that have previously been perceived as high-risk. He highlighted that InfraZamin's credit guarantee structure will allow financial institutions to confidently extend credit to warehousing and storage infrastructure by mitigating underlying risk exposures. He noted that this partnership is expected to expand the overall risk appetite of banks, enabling them to support long-tenor agricultural projects that were historically constrained by financing limitations and risk barriers.

Amir Masood Chief Investment Officer of InfraZamin Pakistan remarked on the occasion "Our collaboration with the Bank of Punjab marks a significant milestone in expanding structured and affordable financing for Pakistan's agriculture sector. This MOU aligns with the national agenda of modernizing the agriculture sector, improving post-harvest management and empowering farmers through better access to finance. Through InfraZamin's credit enhancement, BOP will be able to confidently scale warehousing finance and support the development of modern, accredited storage infrastructure across the country.

The Bank of Punjab reiterated its commitment to supporting sustainable agricultural development and improving Pakistan's food security landscape. By enabling access to modern, scientific storage facilities, the collaboration aims to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance commodity preservation, and create an enabling environment for private-sector investment in the agriculture value chain. The initiative also aligns with national efforts to strengthen warehousing practices, with benefits flowing directly to farmers and rural communities.

The MOU lays the foundation for deeper cooperation between the two organizations, with a formal Master Guarantee Agreement to be finalized in subsequent stages as the program advances. "

Farmers of Ayun to Benefit from Modern Agribusiness Initiative

A new project has been launched in Ayun village of Lower Chitral district to reduce poverty by promoting agribusiness. The initiative is part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rural Economic Development Project (KP-RETP), under which a formal farmer organization has been established.

Regional coordinator Shafiq Iqbal stated that the project offers countless opportunities to transform the lives of those engaged in agriculture. He emphasized that by adopting government procedures, Ayun's farmers would gain awareness of modern farming techniques that could bring significant improvements.

Supported financially by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the provincial government aims to strengthen agriculture and ensure that a large portion of agricultural income directly benefits farmers. Project consultants Azhar Iqbal and Abdul Hameed explained that Ayun was chosen due to its fertile land and soil suitability for diverse fruits and cereal crops. They assured that all necessary resources would be provided to boost production and income. Former union council chairman Muhkamuddin praised the government's efforts, saying farmers would fully utilize the village's agribusiness potential with the project's support.

Voices from the Roof of the World Set to Launch Season 4 Amid Intensifying Climate Crisis

Voices from the Roof of the World Set to Launch Season 4 Amid Intensifying Climate Crisis

Islamabad: Voices from the Roof of the World (VRW), the internationally recognized documentary series highlighting the far-reaching impact of environmental change across Central and South Asia, is set to launch its fourth season. The new season amplifies urgent climate narratives, focusing on air pollution, rising heat, glacier retreat, water scarcity, and the resilience of communities confronting these challenges in the third pole, also known as the 'Roof of the World'. This region's glaciers provide life-sustaining water to an estimated 1.6 billion people living downstream.

As Pakistan faces one of the most severe environmental periods in its history, the climate crisis has become a daily reality. In recent years, the country has felt the force of climate change most vividly through the surge in intense rainstorms that have triggered devastating floods and landslides, causing widespread loss of life and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. These events have been compounded by the rapid melting of glaciers, which has increased the scale and severity of flooding.

Alongside these disasters, Pakistan is facing an ever-deepening air pollution emergency that harms every form of life. The country ranks among the five most polluted in the world, and millions in Punjab are seeking treatment for respiratory illnesses, especially children. It's widely recognised that developing countries contribute the least to global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and industry, yet bear the brunt of the impacts. Pakistan is just one stark example.

Against this backdrop, "Color of Smog," one of VRW season one's films directed by Jawad Sharif, showcases Lahore's spiraling smog emergency. Once known for its gardens, Lahore now ranks high among the world's most polluted cities.

"Smog in Lahore is not just a figure but a daily reality that shapes how people breathe, move, and imagine their futures," said Director Jawad Sharif. "Behind every air quality reading are families trying to protect their health and dignity. Through VRW and films like Color of Smog, we hope audiences can clearly see how the climate crisis is already unfolding around us and why meaningful action can no longer wait."

VRW's Executive Producer Andrew Tkach, eight-time Emmy Award winner who brings over 30 years of experience, is also mentoring young filmmakers and helping them shape their ideas into impactful stories.

"VRW was created to highlight the climate emergency from the perspective of the people who live it every day," notes Andrew Tkach. "In Season 4, we shed light on communities confronting melting glaciers and vanishing forests, but also more hopeful stories of saving falcons and reviving ancient water canals. These stories make one thing clear: the environment is changing faster than we are responding."

The series has won numerous honours and awards including Columbia University Journalism School's John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism. VRW episodes have been selected and screened at over 50 international film festivals worldwide.

"VRW's unique expression of local realities highlights the impact of climate change on the lives and the cultures of the vulnerable communities whilst narrating the story of a changing era," explained Laila Naz Taj, Director AKDN Pakistan Communications. "These films are not distant warnings, they are reflections of the challenges communities are facing right now across Pakistan and the region."

VRW is a joint initiative of the Aga Khan University (AKU), the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), the University of Central Asia (UCA), and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), made possible through the generous support of Ross Beaty, the Jenabai Hussainali Shariff Family, the Sitka Foundation, Gulshan Kassamali Jiwa Family, and Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan Fund for the Environment. Across three seasons, VRW has produced 30 documentaries from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Nepal and beyond, available in English, Urdu, and Russian, with Arabic versions also planned.

Emirates orders 65 additional Boeing 777X aircraft, worth US$ 38 billion at Dubai Airshow 2025

Emirates orders 65 additional Boeing 777X aircraft, worth US$ 38 billion at Dubai Airshow 2025

Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, today announced orders for 65 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, powered by GE 9X engines, worth US$ 38 billion at list prices, on the opening day of Dubai Airshow 2025.

This takes the airline’s total orderbook with Boeing to 315 widebody aircraft, comprising 270 Boeing 777Xs, 10 Boeing 777 freighters, and 35 Boeing 787s; and its orderbook with GE Aerospace for GE9X engines to a total of 540 units including the 130 additional units signed today. This is a massive long-term commitment to US aerospace manufacturing, generating support for hundreds of thousands of high value manufacturing jobs in the US over the life of the programmes.

Emirates’ latest agreement with Boeing also provides strong backing for Boeing’s feasibility study to develop the 777-10, a larger variant of its 777X family, with the airline signing up for options to convert its latest 777-9 order into the 777-10 or the 777-8.

Emirates orders 65 additional Boeing 777X aircraft, worth US$ 38 billion at Dubai Airshow 2025

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group said: “Emirates is already the world’s largest Boeing 777 operator and we are expanding our commitment to the programme today with additional orders worth US$ 38 billion for 65 Boeing 777-9s, and 130 GE9X engines. This is a long-term commitment and testament to our partnership with Boeing and GE, and to US aerospace.

“Each of our aircraft on order has been carefully factored into Emirates’ expansion plan, which is aligned to Dubai’s growth plans. Flying a young and modern fleet with innovative cabin products has always been a cornerstone of Emirates’ strategy, and we look forward to continue working closely with Boeing to receive delivery of our first 777-9s from Q2 of 2027, and to equip our latest aircraft with state-of-the-art, industry-leading onboard products.”

Commenting on the 777-10 study, HH Sheikh Ahmed said: “Emirates has been open about the fact that we are keen for manufacturers to build larger capacity aircraft, which are more efficient to operate especially with projected air traffic growth and increasing constraints at airports. We fully support Boeing’s feasibility study to develop the 777-10 and have options to convert our latest 777-9 order to the 777-10 or the 777-8.”

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes said: “We are deeply honoured that Emirates has once again selected the Boeing 777X to power its future as the airline refreshes its world-class fleet and expands its vaunted global network. Boeing has been a proud supporter of Emirates over the past 40 years as the airline has grown into one of the world’s leading carriers and developed a reputation for excellence and innovation. We look forward to growing our partnership and for Emirates to fly Boeing airplanes for decades to come.”

Russell Stokes, President & CEO, Commercial Engines & Services for GE Aerospace said: “We are proud to deepen our decades-long partnership with Emirates as we advance the future of flight together. Already the world’s largest customer for GE90 and GP7200 engines, this additional GE9X order reflects Emirates’ confidence in our technology and our team. We are ready to support Emirates in every way to leverage the efficiency and durability of our industry-leading solutions and services.”

Over its 40-year history, Emirates has operated every model in the Boeing 777 family and today flies the largest 777 fleet in the world, powered by GE90 engines. Emirates’ 119 Boeing 777-300ERs, 10 Boeing 777-200LRs, and 11 Boeing 777 freighters connect Dubai to over 140 cities and facilitate trade, commerce and tourism traffic across six continents.

After today’s order, Emirates will be expecting Boeing aircraft deliveries up to 2038, a long-term commitment and partnership that will engage the skill and craftmanship of many thousands of workers who manufacture and assemble the 777X and GE9X engines at locations throughout the United States including in Alabama, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont and Washington.

Negative workplace treatment affects more than 2 in 3 employees living with diabetes in Pakistan

Negative workplace treatment affects more than 2 in 3 employees living with diabetes in Pakistan

New research from the International Diabetes Federation reveals that more than 1 in 2 employees with diabetes in Pakistan have considered leaving their job due to concerns about how they might be treated at work.

NOVEMBER 14, 2025: More than 2 in 3 employees living with diabetes in Pakistan reported negative treatment in the workplace because of their condition, according to a new study conducted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). To mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November, the Federation is highlighting the stigma, discrimination and lack of structural support that people living with diabetes continue to face at work.

The survey found that well over half [58%] of employees living with diabetes have considered leaving their job due to the way people with the condition are treated at work. Ms Erum Ghafoor, President, National Association of Diabetes Educators of Pakistan, Vice President, International Diabetes Federation, described the findings as "deeply concerning" and a wake-up call for employers around the world. "It is indefensible that people living with diabetes are facing stigma, isolation and discrimination in the workplace," she said.

Nearly three quarters [72%] of employees diagnosed with type 1 diabetes reported negative treatment in the workplace, compared with over two fifths [41%] of workers living with type 2 diabetes. More than half [52%] of all respondents reported having been denied breaks or time off to attend to their diabetes management.

In addition to its emotional and professional impact, the findings show that diabetes-related stigma can also limit career opportunities. More than a third [37%] said they had missed out on career development or training opportunities because of their condition. These barriers are compounded by a culture of silence. While only one in 20 of employees living with diabetes had not disclosed their condition to their employer, 50% of those said they feared being treated differently. Nearly a third [30%] of these respondents were concerned that disclosure could limit their career progression.

Many employees living with diabetes continue to rely on peer-level support. Almost half [46%] have confided in just one trusted colleague, while significantly less [26%] have shared their diagnosis with just a few people at work. These figures highlight the discomfort in addressing diabetes through formal workplace channels and underline the need for organisations to create more supportive and inclusive environments.

The study also found that daily diabetes management is a source of anxiety for many employees. More than a fifth of respondents [22%] were not comfortable administering insulin at work, while 16% felt the same about checking blood glucose levels. Without adequate support, these routine medical needs can become daily challenges in the workplace, imposing unnecessary stress on employees with diabetes.

"Work life and diabetes are tricky things to deal with," says Ms Anum Anwar, a diabetes educator and advocate living with type 1 diabetes. "We need short breaks, need to follow mealtimes, monitor ourselves and carry extra things like insulin, glucometers and other things to help manage our glucose levels. Sometimes you have to go that extra mile to prove that you are like everyone else and can do as others are doing, if not better."

The global study revealed significant regional variation. Pakistan registered the highest reported rates of negative treatment, followed by India [55%] and the United States [42%], with other countries showing varying degrees of stigma.

Ms Ghafoor added: "No one should have to hide their condition out of fear of being treated differently or denied opportunities. Living with diabetes requires ongoing management, and workplaces must recognise the physical and mental toll it can take. Simple changes, like flexible schedules and private spaces to check glucose levels or administer insulin or other medications, can make a world of difference.

"We want employers everywhere to look closely at how they support people living with diabetes. Employees with diabetes deserve respect, understanding and equal opportunities."

As part of its World Diabetes Day campaign on the importance of well-being at work, the International Diabetes Federation is urging employers to foster supportive environments where health conversations are safe and to implement clear policies that address the needs of employees with diabetes. Strengthening diabetes awareness among all staff and offering flexible arrangements that facilitate diabetes management at work will help ensure that people living with the condition do not feel stigmatised. Workplaces that offer these provisions are better positioned to support all employees, regardless of their health needs.

Pakistan Set to Add $150 Million in IT Exports, 40,000 New Jobs Through Tech Parks

Pakistan’s digital economy is gearing up for major growth as the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) pushes forward with new infrastructure projects aimed at boosting exports and creating jobs. The ministry expects to generate over $150 million in additional IT exports every year while creating more than 40,000 new jobs across the country. This momentum is fueled by large-scale developments, including IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi, along with the rapid rollout of 50 Software Technology Parks (STPs) nationwide.

Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja revealed that the Pakistan Software Export Board has already completed 50 STPs, spanning 1.9 million square feet and supporting more than 350 IT companies with 18,000 professionals. Recently added parks across Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and AJK highlight the government’s focus on regional inclusion and gender diversity—women now account for nearly 20% of the workforce in these facilities. A major milestone was the launch of Pakistan’s first women-only Software Technology Park in Bagh, AJK, giving women entrepreneurs and freelancers an exclusive space equipped with modern tech facilities.

Alongside these achievements, Pakistan’s flagship IT parks in Islamabad and Karachi are moving toward completion. Islamabad’s park alone is expected to generate 7,500 jobs and $60 million in exports, while Karachi’s facility will host over 220 ICT companies, creating 13,400 jobs and $90 million in annual exports. Under the Prime Minister’s initiative for startups and digital skills, the government also plans to establish 250 co-working spaces by 2027, with over 40 already supporting freelancers and new digital businesses across the country.
