Lahore: - The launch of Muhammad Saeed Mehdi's much-anticipated memoir, The Eyewitness: Standing in the Shadows of Pakistan's History, was held at a well-attended event in Lahore. The judicial aspects of the Bhutto case documented in this book are an important part of our legal history." He further remarked, "Writing a book is a form of jihad. Adding a senior bureaucrat perspective, Farhan Khawaja remarked, "Young journalists and bureaucrats must read this book to understand what professional integrity truly means in difficult circumstances." The conversation, moderated by Raheela Baqai, further explored the ethical and historical weight of the memoir.

Chitral Hunter Secures Trophy Ibex as Conservation Efforts Boost Population

In Upper Chitral’s Arkari Valley, local hunter Zeeshan Nasir has marked a significant achievement by successfully hunting a Himalayan ibex during the ongoing trophy hunting season.

According to Wildlife Department spokesperson Latif Rehman, the ibex was 10 years old and carried horns measuring an impressive 43.5 inches, making it a prized trophy. He noted that sustained conservation and protection efforts in Arkari Valley have led to a healthy rise in the ibex population, allowing regulated hunting to continue without harming the species.

Under Pakistan’s trophy hunting framework, 80 percent of the revenue generated from hunting permits is allocated to Village Conservation Committees (VCCs). These funds are invested in local welfare initiatives, including education, healthcare, and community development projects, ensuring that the benefits of conservation are shared directly with residents.

Nine Killed in Chitral Avalanche as President, PM Order Swift Relief Operations

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives due to the avalanche in Chitral.

In their separate messages, they extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the elevation of ranks of the departed souls.

In his message of condolence, the President directed federal, provincial, and local authorities to accelerate relief efforts in the affected areas and maintain constant communication with the public.

In his message, the Prime Minister directed the relevant federal rescue and relief agencies to accelerate aid operations in cooperation with the provincial government.

The Prime Minister also directed the Chairman National Disaster Management Authority to monitor the situation in the country's mountainous regions following the heavy snowfall and to maintain close coordination with relevant agencies to tackle any potential emergencies.

Nine people of a same family were killed and a child injured when an avalanche struck the in Arandu area of Lower Chitral district on Friday.

According to Rescue 1122, rescue teams recovered the bodies of nine victims from the rubble that includes five men and four women.

Avalanche in Chitral’s Srigal Damel Claims Nine Lives, Woman and Child Rescued

😢 Tragedy in #Chitral: Avalanche Buries Home, Nine Dead, Two Survivors Pulled Out Alive  

In Chitral’s Darosh Tehsil, a tragic avalanche struck a house in the remote mountainous area of Srigal Damel, killing nine people. Rescue teams managed to save a woman and a child alive from the debris.  

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the avalanche hit the home of Bacha Khan, son of Gul Muhammad. At the time, 11 family members were inside the house. Local residents immediately began rescue efforts, later joined by Chitral Scouts and police personnel.  

Among the deceased are five women and four men. Rescue workers recovered nine bodies from the snow while successfully pulling out a woman and a child alive.

Kohat Discovery Expected to Yield 3,100 Barrels of Oil Daily

Pakistan's energy sector has received a major boost with the discovery of a significant oil and gas reserve in Kohat. The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced this as their third major find within just one month.

According to details, the Bargzai X‑1 well in Kohat is expected to produce 3,100 barrels of oil per day and 8.185 million standard cubic feet of gas daily. In this discovery, OGDCL holds a 65% share, PPL 30%, and the government 5%. OGDCL's spokesperson noted that three discoveries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since the start of the year have collectively yielded 9,500 barrels of oil and 24.2 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, marking a milestone for Pakistan's energy sector.

Experts believe further reserves may soon be uncovered in Hangu district's Lockhart and Lumshiwal formations, which could enhance Pakistan's energy production and strengthen the local economy. Both companies have informed shareholders of this development, sparking optimism among investors. The discovery is seen as a step toward energy self‑sufficiency and greater regional economic growth.

PQGTL IPO Attracts Rs4.74bn Bids in Pakistan's First General Takaful Listing

Karachi: Pak-Qatar General Takaful Limited's (PQGTL) IPO book-building has concluded with an historic oversubscription of 21x times, marking the first-ever IPO of a dedicated General Takaful company at PSX.

Investors responded strongly, with the strike price closing at Rs 14 per share, compared to the floor price of Rs 10. Total demand reached Rs 4.74 billion against the issue size of Rs 225 million.

Successful bidders will be provisionally allotted 22,500,000. The remaining 7,500,000 shares will be offered to retail investors on 28-29 January.

Shahid Ali Habib, CEO of Arif Habib Ltd., the lead manager for the IPO said that country's first-ever IPO of any dedicated General Takaful Company has made a historic debut at PSX reflects investor confidence in Pakistan's fast-growing Takaful sector and PQGTL's strong market position.

The proceeds from the IPO will be utilized to fund strategic initiatives, including investments in software and other intangible assets, hardware & infrastructure, marketing & brand development, human resource enhancement, and the establishment of new branches, as well as the transformation of existing branches to improve operational efficiency and customer experience.

Pak-Qatar General Takaful IPO Book Building Begins, Targets Up to Rs420 Million

The book-building process for Pak-Qatar General Takaful Limited's (PQGTL) Initial Public Offering (IPO) has commenced and will continue until January 22, with high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors subscribing to 75 percent of the issue, while the remaining 25 percent is reserved for the general public. Under the offering, the company is issuing 30 million shares within a price band of Rs10 to Rs14 per share, aiming to raise up to approximately Rs420 million. Retail investors will be able to subscribe during January 28–29.

This IPO marks Pakistan's first public offering by a dedicated general takaful company and follows the successful listing of Pak-Qatar Family Takaful Limited last month, which was oversubscribed by 3.5 times. According to the company, the listing will strengthen its paid-up capital to meet regulatory requirements and support future expansion. IPO proceeds will be used for technology upgrades, infrastructure, marketing, human resource development, and branch expansion, as PQGTL continues to broaden its Shariah-compliant insurance offerings for individual and corporate clients.

Balochistan Govt and NBP launch subsidized Electric Scooter scheme

The Government of Balochistan and the National Bank of Pakistan have signed a formal agreement to provide electric scooters on subsidized installments to students, working women, and the general public, aiming to improve mobility and promote sustainable transportation.

The MoU signing ceremony was held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Quetta, attended by Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti, Provincial Minister Mir Sadiq Umrani, senior provincial officials, and top representatives from the National Bank of Pakistan.

Chief Minister Bugti described the initiative as a significant step toward ensuring safe, affordable, and dignified commuting options, especially for students and working women. He noted that the scheme will not only reduce daily travel challenges but also encourage the adoption of eco-friendly transport alternatives, contributing to cost-effective and sustainable mobility.

UBL with AUTON8 concludes core banking data migration of 105 Ex-Silk Bank branches

United Bank Limited (UBL) has successfully completed a large-scale core banking data migration with AUTON8 in six months, transitioning data from Ex-Silkbank's Temenos T24 core banking system to UBL's Symbols platform.

The program encompassed customer accounts records across 105 branches and was executed with zero critical data loss within six months, ensuring complete accuracy, reconciliation, and uninterrupted operational continuity.

The initiative addressed significant technical challenges, including high-volume data processing within restricted banking windows, complex mapping across account structures, branch codes, customer identifiers, and GL/symbol hierarchies, as well as the remediation of legacy data quality issues. To accelerate repeatable conversion cycles and reduce cutover risk, AUTON8 utilised MORPH to configure governed transformation logic between source and target structures, enabling the rapid refinement of mapping rules across dry runs with consistent outcomes carried into the final migration.

In 2025, AKU secured over USD 100 million in research funding, while 27 faculty members were recognized among the world's top two percent of scientists. President Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin praised Pakistan's youth for their adaptability, openness to diverse perspectives, and ability to transform technology into opportunity. The university also provided financial assistance to 72 percent of students last year, ensuring access for those facing economic challenges.

Outstanding graduates received awards, while Professor Emeritus Mushtaq Ahmed was honored with the Presidential Medal, AKU's highest distinction. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including AKU's founding president, Shamsh Kassim-Lakhani.

Passenger Van Accident in Upper Chitral Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

 Second Road Mishap in Two Days Claims Lives in Upper Chitral

A passenger van traveling from Peshawar to Booni in Upper Chitral met with an accident near Charun, resulting in the death of one woman.

According to initial reports, there were 11 passengers on board. The woman died on the spot, while the remaining injured were shifted to THQ Hospital Booni for treatment.

Rescue 1122 officials in Upper Chitral stated that the van veered off the road and fell near the riverbank. Recovery operations for the vehicle are currently underway.

This marks the second accident in Upper Chitral within two days. Just a day earlier, at Shogram, another passenger vehicle plunged into a deep ravine, killing two people.
