Facebook Tightens Rules on Copycat Content, Expands Monetization for Creators
Meta has announced new measures aimed at rewarding creators who publish original content on Facebook, while reducing the visibility of copied or unoriginal posts. The company said the initiative is part of its broader effort to make Facebook Feed and Reels more relevant by limiting spam and discouraging impersonation and duplicate content.
According to Meta, creators producing original content are now receiving greater reach and improved monetization opportunities on Facebook. The company reported that both views and watch time for original Reels nearly doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. At the same time, Meta has taken strong action against impersonation, removing more than 20 million fake accounts posing as well-known creators, which led to a 33 percent drop in impersonation-related reports.
Facebook has also updated its guidelines to clearly define what qualifies as “original” content. Videos filmed or produced directly by a creator will be considered original, while posts that simply re-upload, stitch together, or slightly edit another creator’s content may be deprioritized in recommendations. Creators who transform third-party material with meaningful commentary, new information, or creative additions can still qualify for recommendations and monetization.
In addition, Facebook is testing improvements to its content protection tool to help creators identify potential impersonators and report them more easily. The new feature will allow creators to detect copied or impersonated content in one place through their professional dashboard. Meta says these updates are part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring authentic creators are recognized, protected, and rewarded on the platform.
