KP Assembly Committee Raises Alarm Over Flood Threat in Lower Chitral

Flood Preparedness, Irrigation Projects Reviewed in KP Assembly Meeting

The Standing Committee on Irrigation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has voiced serious concern over increasing flood risks in Lower Chitral, where nearly 600 houses are currently vulnerable. The committee directed relevant authorities to take immediate preventive measures to protect lives and property from potential disaster.

The meeting, chaired by MPA Zarshad Khan, was held at the Assembly Secretariat and attended by committee members and senior officials, including representatives from the Irrigation and Law departments. Participants reviewed the department’s performance and progress on previous directives, while also discussing technical matters such as the replacement of an outdated transformer and the solarization of irrigation schemes.

Officials informed the committee that a transformer installed in 1952 could not be converted to solar power due to technical limitations, though a backup unit is available. Updates were also shared on delayed solarization work in Takht Nusrati due to unpaid contractor dues, which are now being addressed. Meanwhile, the Baizai Irrigation Scheme was reported to be functioning effectively, supplying water to around 25,000 acres. Concluding the session, the chairman instructed the Irrigation Department to present detailed data on staff deputations and departmental resources in the next meeting.
