Aga Khan Foundation and Agence Française de Développement Sign MoU for Coastal Resilience in Tanzania

Tanzania to Benefit from Climate-Resilient Farming and Mangrove Restoration Partnership

Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have signed a new memorandum of understanding to strengthen coastal resilience and promote regenerative agriculture in Tanzania. The agreement builds on nearly 20 years of collaboration between the French Republic, the Ismaili Imamat, and the Aga Khan Development Network, which has collectively invested more than $1 billion across 20 countries. The MoU was signed on May 12 during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi.

Under the agreement, AKF and AFD will work with government authorities in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar to protect marine and coastal ecosystems while helping smallholder farmers adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices aimed at improving food security, biodiversity, and livelihoods. An initial €38.5 million has been allocated for marine ecosystem restoration projects under AKF’s 10-year Indian Ocean “ReGeneration” initiative, which has already led to the planting of over 1.7 million mangroves along Tanzania’s coastline since 2023.
