Over 5,000 patients visit Peshawar hospitals due to excessive meat consumption during Eid

PESHAWAR, May 30 (APP): More than 5,000 people sought medical treatment at the three major hospitals in Peshawar during the Eid holidays, suffering from food poisoning, indigestion, and other gastrointestinal ailments linked to excessive meat consumption.

According to officials of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) and Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), thousands of patients visited emergency and outpatient departments during the Eid holidays, complaining of food poisoning, stomach disorders and digestive complications caused mainly by overeating sacrificial meat.

The patients included people of all age groups, including children, women, men, youngsters, and elderly citizens.

Most complaints were related to stomach pain, nausea, gastroenteritis, indigestion, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as cardiac complications.

Doctors said that consuming excessive quantities of meat, eating improperly cooked meat and using leftover food that was not stored at safe temperatures were among the major causes of health problems during Eid-ul-Adha. They added that excessive consumption of carbonated soft drinks further aggravated digestive disorders.

Health experts advised people to maintain a balanced diet by supplementing red meat with fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, and yogurt.

They also recommended consuming meat in moderate portions, staying adequately hydrated and avoiding excessive intake of soft drinks.

The doctors urged citizens experiencing severe indigestion, dehydration, food poisoning, or other related symptoms to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.
