PDMA Issues Flash Flood Alert for Chitral Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Threat Prompts Emergency Alert in Chitral

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flash flood alert for Upper and Lower Chitral, warning residents about the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, and other weather-related emergencies. According to the advisory, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected to affect Chitral and several other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from June 18 to June 22.

The authority has directed district administrations in Chitral and other vulnerable areas to remain on high alert and continuously monitor sensitive locations. Rescue teams and emergency services have been instructed to keep personnel, machinery, and equipment ready to respond to any emergency situation. Residents living in high-risk areas may also be shifted to safer locations if conditions worsen.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms, and possible hailstorms in various parts of the country, including Chitral. Authorities have advised tourists and local residents to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous regions and follow official safety guidelines. The weather system is expected to bring temporary relief from the ongoing heat but may also increase the risk of flash floods and landslides in northern areas.
