Media Regulator Seeks Explanation from Broadcaster After On-Air Criticism of Finance Minister
Pakistan’s media regulator, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, has issued a show-cause notice to a private television channel for airing controversial remarks by journalist Mohsin Baig about Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The comments, broadcast during a television programme over the Eid holidays, sparked widespread debate and criticism on social media.
According to reports, Mohsin Baig questioned Aurangzeb’s performance as finance minister, alleging that he was “physically and mentally absent” during office hours and linking this to the country’s economic difficulties. PEMRA has asked the channel to explain why regulatory action should not be taken and whether the content violated the authority’s code of conduct and editorial standards.
The controversy comes as Aurangzeb continues to defend the government’s economic policies and tax reforms. Speaking at a press conference alongside Bilal Azhar Kayani, the finance minister said Pakistan’s economy had remained stable despite major challenges, including last year’s floods and ongoing regional instability.
