LAHORE: Two doctors were arrested for running an illegal clinic selling organs in Lahore.

The arrest was made during a Federal Investigation Agency raid at the clinic, which was being run in a private housing society.

The raid was carried out on a tip-off, during which the FIA officials caught the two doctors conducting an illegal operation in the operation theater in the house.

The arrested persons have been identified as surgeon Dr Fawad, anaesthesia specialist Dr Altamash, who was also the general secretary of Young Doctors Association Punjab. However, the arrested persons denied their crime when they were arrested.

When the raid was carried out, two foreigners and others were also present at the clinic to sell their kidneys. The organ sellers were shifted to a hospital.

"Other people who are part of the group will also be arrested," FIA Assistant Director Jamil Khan Mayo told Geo News.

A rickshaw driver, Amir, who was there to sell his kidney said he sold his organ for Rs130,000, but had yet to be paid.

The doctors are also alleged to have taken out a kidney of a resident of Kalma Chowk, Roshni, and sold it to a foreigner for Rs133,000.

Sources said the doctors were also involved in kidnapping passers-by and forcefully taking their organs out.

Punjab Health Secretary Najam Shah told Geo News they have asked FIA to provide a report on the group of such doctors. He suspected more doctors could also be involved in the crime.

This is not the first time a group was nabbed for doing illegal business of organ sale. The health department of Punjab announced action be taken against the doctors involved in organ sale in Lahore.  (Geo News)

LG Electronics Announces First-Quarter 2017 Financial Results

LG Electronics Announces First-Quarter 2017 Financial Results

Karachi: LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced first-quarter 2017 revenue of KRW 14.66 trillion (USD 12.70 billion), an increase of 9.7 percent from the same period last year. LG nearly doubled its operating income to KRW 921.5 billion (USD 798.3 million) with the Home Appliance & Air Solutions Company posting its highest quarterly operating income in eight years.

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company reported a 10 percent increase in first-quarter sales from the same period a year earlier and 15 percent higher than the previous quarter. Revenues of KRW 4.64 trillion (USD 4.02 billion) reflected strong performance in Asia and Latin America. Domestic sales were 33 percent higher year-over-year due to strong performance by TWINWash washing machines, air conditioners and some refrigerators, as well as the company’s newest premium LG Styler clothes management system and air purifiers. As LG enters the peak season, the company foresees an improvement in the business environment across much of Asia and Latin America, two key growth markets.

LG Home Entertainment Company recorded its highest first-quarter operating margin of 8.8 percent on sales of KRW 4.33 trillion (USD 3.75 billion), largely due to expanding sales of premium products, improved cost structure and a more flexible strategy to deal with the increase in panel prices. The company expects TV demand in the next quarter to remain positive due to opportunities in North America, Latin America and Asia, led by the growing popularity of premium LG OLED and Ultra HD TV products and the rollout of the new LG SIGNATURE OLED TV W.

LG Mobile Communications Company reported revenues of KRW 3.01 trillion (USD 2.61 billion), an increase of 4 percent quarter-over-quarter and 2 percent year-over-year, driven by the launch of the flagship LG G6 smartphone and new mass-tier models. The company reported smartphone shipments of 14.8 million units this quarter, up 10 percent from the first quarter of last year in large part due to the Americas. While effects of last year’s reorganization are beginning to bear fruit, price competition in the mass-tier segment and competition from other flagship models are expected to increase this year.

LG Vehicle Components Company reported strong sales of KRW 876.4 billion (USD 759.2 million), a 48 percent increase from the first quarter of 2016 thanks in large part to the successful collaboration with General Motors on the popular Bolt electronic vehicle. Continued investments in R&D and growth are expected to continue to affect profitability this year.

#PPAF wins Diversity & Inclusion Outstanding Achievement Award

#PPAF wins Diversity & Inclusion Outstanding Achievement Award

Karachi: Pakistan’s lead agency for poverty reduction, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) has been awarded the Diversity & Inclusion Outstanding Achievement Award at the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks Conference held in Karachi on April 27, 2017.

Diversity Achievement awards were presented to those organizations which have taken the initiative to promote diversity and inclusion not only in their organization, but also in the larger society through their work. A rigorous process of evaluation was adopted by seasoned HR and business leaders to finalise the winners.

Diversity and inclusion has emerged as a worldwide best practice. Diversity refers to the variety of differences and similarities such as gender, race/ethnicity, age, culture, religion, class/caste, language, education, nationality, disability, work style, work experience, job role and function of people who are necessary to propel an organization to success. Inclusion refers to how diversity is leveraged to create a fair, equitable, healthy, and high- performing organization or community, in which all individuals are respected, feel engaged and motivated, and whose contributions toward meeting organizational and societal goals are valued.

Expressing his views on winning the award, PPAF’s General Manager HR said, “PPAF has a rich history of  its inclusive HR practices. The basis of equitable development lies in the empowerment of individuals within communities who have no voice and individuals who are marginalized and vulnerable, such as women, the differently abled, minorities and the youth. In order to ensure that diversity does not result in deprivation, it is essential that we track diversity to ensure that our institutions and practices are inclusive.”

He added: “We have also undertaken measures that ensure equity, inclusion and women’s representation within the organization. Gender has now become an established theme across all projects and programmes.”

In 2016 the experts, guided by researchers Julie O'Mara and Alan Richter, produced the tenth anniversary edition of Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks: Standards around the World. The GDIB 2016 supports all types and sizes of organizations in the development and implementation of diversity & inclusion (D&I) best practices. It is a comprehensive guide to explain what creating inclusive systems and managing diversity entails.  It represents the best thinking and consensus agreement of global experts.  GDIB is for use by organizations across all sectors, sizes, types and work regions.

#NailaJaffri refused government aid protesting Nawaz,Jindal meeting

Last month the news of actor Naila Jaffri battling cancer took social media by storm. While a few online portals misreported her being completely bedridden, Jaffri was quick to clear the air. She said that she was suffering from ovarian cancer which is now in its third stage but she is regularly getting her chemotherapy done and is in high spirits.

However, she remained open to the option of any government assistance in receiving her expensive treatments.

In a recent turn of events, Naila has decided to forego the financial support she was about to get from the government as a protest.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, the actor said that she had applied to get help from President Mamnoon Hussain’s Artist Welfare Fund and a cheque of rupees 500,000 is in the process of being issued to her but she will no longer accept it since the government has allowed an Indian tycoon in Pakistan with a no-police-inquiry visa.

“I cannot accept a dime from the government that entertains people from the very country that has been plotting against us our interests and our people,” she told The Express Tribune in a telephonic conversation while referring to Indian tycoon Sajjan Jindal’s recent arrival in Pakistan.

“I am glad that the government decided to offer me help but I really can’t accept this fund under present circumstances. The love, respect and prayers I have received from my people when they came to know of my illness is unimaginable and I won’t do anything that hurts their feelings. "

Coke adds Fiber to drinks to try and convince people to buy soda again

Coke adds Fiber to drinks to try and convince people to buy soda again

by Business Insider

Coca-Cola now sells a soda with added fiber.

Coca-Cola Plus rolled out in Japan in February. The company reportedly spent more than a decade researching and developing the drink, which is sugar-free, calorie-free, and contains 5 grams of dietary fiber in each bottle.

"We're looking to add functional beverages," CEO James Quincy said on a call with media on Tuesday. The company is rolling out Coca-Cola Plus and Canada Dry Plus as part of a "fast-growing segment where ingredients are added to beverages to address specific dietary needs."

The company didn't reveal plans to sell Coca-Cola Plus in the US anytime soon.

The beverage giant is desperately looking to grow sparkling drink sales as soda consumption slumps, and executives are hoping that healthier reformulated versions of Coca-Cola could do the trick.

"Consumers, even the same person... want less sugar at one point, more caffeine, less caffeine [at other times,]" Quincy said. Coca-Cola, he said, "can actually have multiple objectives in the same reformulation. You can... improve the taste, and reduce the added sugar, and add a new fruit juice or some other ingredients."

Most of Coca-Cola's reformulations have created successful new beverage brands simply by cutting sugar or calories from pre-existing drinks. For example, the company reported that the revamped Coca-Cola Zero Sugar experienced double-digit growth in the last quarter, after growing 9% by volume in 2016.

Revamping well-known brands can be a tricky business, though. The 1985 reformulation of Coca-Cola that resulted in "New Coke" was one of the most catastrophic decisions in the company's history.

Now, Coca-Cola's reformulations are used as extra variations on the core brand, instead of replacements for a classic Coke. Coca-Cola Plus will never replace Coca-Cola, but instead serve as yet another option, alongside brands such as Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, and Coke Life.

Crafting a healthier version of Coke could be key to saving Coca-Cola's soda business. While Coca-Cola grew its sparkling soft drink revenue last quarter, by volume, global soft drink sales fell by 1%.

PepsiCo outshines Coca-Cola as profit beats expectations - FT Report

PepsiCo outshines Coca-Cola as profit beats expectations - FT Report

Maker of Mountain Dew benefits from smoother shift to healthier products than rival

PepsiCo profits beat expectations in the first quarter, boosted by sales of “guilt-free” snacks and drinks as the company tries to appeal to more health-conscious customers.

The results, announced on Wednesday, followed a weaker performance by its main rival, Coca-Cola, underscoring PepsiCo’s success in adapting to changing consumer tastes and diversifying from sugary soft drinks.

The maker of Mountain Dew and Quaker Oats reported adjusted earnings rose nearly 6 per cent to 94 cents a share, beating consensus forecasts of 92 cents a share. Sales climbed 1.6 per cent to $12.05bn, eclipsing estimates of $11.98bn.

Sales of “guilt-free” products, such as diet carbonated drinks and baked crisps, now account 45 per cent of revenues, PepsiCo said.

Indra Nooyi, chief executive, said the group had managed to increase revenues “despite challenging food and beverage industry trading conditions in North America”.

PepsiCo has been adding new products to reduce its reliance on its namesake Pepsi brand, which makes up about 12 per cent of total sales. In the past year it has introduced drinks such as probiotic versions of its Tropicana juices and has acquired Kevita, a maker of kombucha, the fermented tea drink, and other beverages.

Coca-Cola, the world’s largest soft-drink maker, on Tuesday reported that first-quarter sales had dropped 11 per cent to $9.1bn as it restructures its business. The Atlanta-based company has been selling off chunks of its bottling divisions to diversify away from fizzy drinks.

James Quincey will take up the chief executive role at Coca-Cola in May to lead a turnround strategy, replacing Muhtar Kent. Mr Quincey said on Tuesday that the group would axe 1,200 jobs as it looks to cut costs by $800m a year.

Mr Quincey, who has worked at Coca-Cola for two decades, is looking to recast the company, pledging to use ingredients with less sugar, to become “bigger than the Coca-Cola brand”. Analysts at Wells Fargo warned that challenges would “remain very strong for the near-term” but said the company was “doing the right things” to address them.

Coca-Cola reported adjusted earnings of 43 cents a share in the first three months of the year. It said structural changes accounted for 10 per cent of the fall in revenues. Mr Kent said the results were “in line with our plan” and had been “adversely impacted” by Easter falling earlier this year. “We continue to execute against the long-term strategic transformation plan for the company,” he said.

PepsiCo this month drew ire on social media for an advertisement depicting model Kendall Jenner joining a demonstration and offering a police officer a can of Pepsi. The company axed the ad and apologised after being condemned for trivialising civil protests.

PepsiCo shares fell about 1 per cent in morning trading as lower than forecast profit margins, particularly in emerging markets where higher commodity prices have pressured the bottom line, weighed on investor sentiment.

Talking to Geo News, Wasim Akram rejected the rumours that he was joining PTI, saying that he was not joining any political party.

The former captain said that he will join the rally for the betterment of infrastructure of the port city.

Imran must dislose the name who offered him10bn - Politicians seek clarification on #ImranKhan’s Rs 10 billion offer allegation

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/PESHAWAR: Leaders from Pakistan’s main political parties have sought clarification into recent allegations made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan of being offered Rs 10 billion to stay silent in the Panama Case.

Khan during a gathering at Shaukat Khanum Hospital alleged that he had been made an offer in the Panama case. "Just imagine how much money he offered me to be silent. Rs10 billion. If he can offer me this much money, just imagine how much he would offer to others. That is why if we don't maintain public pressure on this issue, then after two months it will be dragged to next year," Khan said.

Punjab Law Minister and PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto notice of Imran Khan’s allegation.

"The Chief Justice should ask Imran Khan who offered him the money," said Sanaullah while speaking outside the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday. The accusations he has hurled should be enquired into, the law minister said.

If the accusations are proven to be true then the person who offered the amount should be brought before the entire nation, he remarked, adding "that person should be punished."

However, if the allegations are proven to be false then Imran should be taken to task, Sanaullah suggested.

"For the last four years, Imran has been insulting people," he maintained. "He should be sent a notice and punished."

However, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, responded to Imran's claim.

In a tweet, Maryam responded to the accusation and called Imran a 'liar'.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Saeed Ghani said Imran Khan's allegations are very serious. Speaking to reporters, Ghani said it is Imran Khan's duty to clarify who made the offer? Upon whose instructions was the offer made? All such details must be brought to light, Ghani added.

The PPP Senator said that if such an offer was made, an inquiry should be conducted against the prime minister on these grounds. He added that by not clarifying, Imran Khan's statement was also casting a shadow of doubt on the PPP.

Separately, President Awami National Party Asfandyar Wali reiterated that Imran Khan should clarify who made him the offer and give a detailed explanation.

The ANP leader was speaking to the media after party’s think-tank session in Peshawar on Wednesday.

On Panama verdict, he remarked that he respects the Supreme Court’s decision and will not demand PM’s resignation.

He also raised doubts whether Imran Khan will accept the decision of the Joint Investigation Team if he is not willing to accept SC’s decision. “It is strange that the leaders distributed sweets one day and the next day they asked for the PM to resign,” he remarked.

PESHAWAR: After inking memorandum of understandings worth $24 billion with neighbouring China, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approached Beijingtoopen diplomatic mission in Peshawar.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said that during his meetings with senior officers of the Chinese foreign office in Beijing, he discussed with them establishment of a consulate level office in Peshawar.

To a question, he said that he also proposed Chinese government to start Air China flights from Peshawar. `Chinese officials showed willingness to consider the proposal and KP government will send formal request in this regard,` said Mr Khattak, who along with a delegation visited China on April 15.

The chief minister`s trip was part of the road show, which was organised in Beijing. The delegation comprised 60 ofñcials and 100 investors from the province. The two-day event was aimed at persuading state-ownedChinese companies and private sectors to bring investment to the province.

Terming the tour very successful, Mr Khattak said that total 86 projects were put on display in the road show in Beijing and more than 80 MoUs were signed with the stateowned companies.

He said that those MoUs would bring around $24 billion investment to the province. He said that total 900 companies participated in the road show.

In addition, he said, private sector also signed MoUs worth $1 billion with their counterparts during the show.

`One of the main objectives of the tour was to promote business to business interaction between the two countries,` he said.

The chief minister said that he would go to China with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif next month for follow-up meetings with the Chinese authorities. Chinese government is hosting summit next month and leaders from 28 countries are likely to attend the event.

Mr Khattak said that economic landscape of KP had totally changed after China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the province was emerging as the most feasible central point in the region. He said that KP was not feasible for investment before CPEC.`Few years back, distance from seaport and shortage of skilled manpower were considered major disadvantages for KP. Foreign and local investors did not come to our province, but situation has totally changed after CPEC,` said Mr Khattak.

He said that proposed GilgitChitral route would linl( KP with Central Asian Republics via Wakhan Corridor.

He said that during his previous visit to China in December, the KP government had signed four agreements to build Peshawar Circular Railway, Gilgit-Chitral Road, and industrial park and 2,000 megawatts hydel power generation plants.

`Major challenge for the provincial government is now to make these MoUs feasible and start work on these projects in next three months, hesaid, addingthatthe proposedprojects would be run on `build, operate and transfer` (POD) basis. He said that the government would not borrow loans for those projects.

The media report regarding donkeys` trade with China was inappropriate. `Some politicians, especially those belonging to PML-N, brought the province to disrepute by making fun of the trade,` he said.

Mr Khattak said that the programme was in hands of the private sector but some were out to defame the province in the eyes of the people.
