Strengthened Networks portfolio boosts Ericsson’s drive towards Net Zero emissions

Strengthened Networks portfolio boosts Ericsson’s drive towards Net Zero emissions

A new range of 10 radios led by triple-band Radio 4485, which is 53 percent lighter than comparable products. Also launching new mobile transport and software solutions

Industry-first, 600MHz Massive MIMO radio with Ericsson-unique Interference Sensing software that adds up to 40 percent more capacity with portfolio-wide hardware support

A quad-carrier microwave transport radio with four times more capacity plus Radio Deep Sleep support across the MINI-LINK portfolio

Ericsson’s (NASDAQ: ERIC) leadership in supporting service providers’ Net Zero ambitions, while meeting market demands for higher 5G capacity and revenue growth, has taken a major step forward with the launch of an enhanced RAN and Transport portfolio. Set to be showcased at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 Barcelona, more than 10 new Ericsson solutions will cut carbon emissions and site footprint, increase energy performance and boost network capacity.

The full range of new remote radios for 4G and 5G capacity is led by the triple-band Radio 4485 for FDD (frequency-division duplexing), which is 53 percent lighter and consumes about 22 percent less energy than comparable products. New dual and single-band radios have also been launched.

Ericsson has also introduced a new range of wideband Massive MIMO radios - spearheaded by the industry-first, ultra-wideband AIR 6476 - which provides 600MHz instantaneous bandwidth that doubles capacity without additional antenna footprint and enhances user experience.

Software is in the spotlight as well with new features such as Interference Sensing, which optimizes mid-band Massive MIMO performance by minimizing inter-cell interference and increasing network capacity by up to 40 percent.

The updated portfolio includes new mobile transport offerings. The new quad microwave radio MINI-LINK 6321, with 4.8 Gbps capacity, is aimed at making RAN evolution options easier for service providers. The offering has around 50 percent smaller site footprint and energy consumption than the previous alternative for building a four-carrier MINI-LINK hop.

David Hammarwall, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, says: “Capacity expansions, energy savings, and sustainability are central to service providers’ RAN evolution plans. Ericsson’s enhanced portfolio fulfills the key needs of service providers and is leading the industry towards Net Zero while capturing opportunities of data traffic growth. We expect these topics will be the center of attention in our discussions with customers at MWC Barcelona 2023 and beyond.”

Portfolio additions include:

Intelligent Cell Shaping: Ericsson-unique software with intelligent automation that improves coverage and boosts downlink speed at the cell edge by up to 35 percent

Booster Carrier Sleep: energy-efficiency software feature that allows carriers to be switched on and off depending on the traffic load

Energy efficiency features in mobile transport with MINI-LINK Radio Deep Sleep, which lowers radio energy consumption by up to 25 percent by hibernating radios in multi-carrier solutions when the capacity is not needed

New cell site router, Router 6676: with high density of 25GE interfaces and is three-times more energy-efficient than the previous generation of routers. It supports Ericsson’s new remote radios and Massive MIMO radios with 25Gbps interfaces

Underpinning the solutions is an Ericsson hardware and software co-design that allows the network to slash power consumption by up to 94 percent during low traffic compared to peak consumption.

Ericsson is also reducing its own carbon emissions in the production of new radios, using the embodied carbon* metric, which gauges the amount of greenhouse gases released before the product is deployed. Radio 4485 has 50 percent lower embodied carbon emissions than comparable products.

The new solutions will be on show in Ericsson’s booth in Hall 2 at the Fira Gran Via during MWC Barcelona 2023 from February 27 to March 2. The portfolio additions will be commercially available during 2023 and Q1 2024.

Ed Gubbins, Principal Analyst at Global Data, says: “Ericsson’s latest RAN and transport solutions address not only a key pain point of service providers – how to grow capacity to further monetize 5G while keeping costs down – but also a top concern, which is energy efficiency or reducing their carbon footprint. The ‘more with less’ theme is spot-on with the new radios and software features - compact yet more powerful with higher capacity and energy efficiency. Also worth noting is Ericsson’s unique hardware and software co-design that enhances overall network performance.”

Achieving Net Zero green gas emissions is one of the most crucial and essential challenges the world is facing. Concerted efforts are underway across the telecoms sector by many players to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

Huawei launches the first-ever smart village in Gokina

Islamabad:- In line with the Government’s Digital Pakistan vision and the UN SDGs, Smart Village Pakistan aims to digitally transform remote and rural communities with Internet connectivity and empower local residents with access to a range of digital services to improve their quality of life and well-being. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Pakistan is the first country to establish a Smart Village in the Asia Pacific region.” - Federal Minister for IT & Telecommunication (MoITT), Syed AminUl Haque said while addressing as Chief Guest at the Inauguration ceremony of Gokina Smart Village Project in a local hotel on Wednesday.

This pilot project comes under the umbrella of Smart Villages of Pakistan, a nationwide initiative launched by the MoITT in 2021 together with Universal Service Fund (USF), International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Huawei.

While applauding the efforts of USF, ITU and Huawei,Federal Minister for MoITT, Syed Amin Ul Haque said, “It is anticipated that the pilot projects and the Smart Pakistan Village initiative as a whole will help overcome key challenges that people in rural areas face such as limited access to healthcare, education, financial, and digital services; lack of employment and income-creation opportunities; digital literacy and gender gaps; and a rural-urban divide exacerbated by uneven technology proliferation. The Smart Village Pakistan Projectswill be initiated in all provinces very soon.”

Highlighting the Gokina Smart Village Project details IT Minister said that, three priority areas were identified through the needs assessment study in Gokina,a valley settlement located 21 kilometers away from Islamabad.

Education- Gokina village has a high school for boys and for girls. However, it was found that there were no science teachers, particularly in girls’ school, which creates hurdles for students in getting benefits both, in terms of learning as well as competing for the future professional opportunities that science subject’s offer at national and international levels. The project has identified an e-education provider (Tele-Taleem) to bridge this gap.

Health- There is a medical center in the village with limited to no medical services available. The health worker is responsible to provide very basic health advice and services to the community members. It was also highlighted that the biggest challenge in getting access to health services is time consuming as it involves commuting to Islamabad, no emergency services, no doctors and absence of pharmacy etc. The project has identified an e-health provider (Sehat Kahani) to bridge this gap.

Digital Skills & Entrepreneurship- It was found that there is a clear need and demand for digital skills enhancement & entrepreneurship whereby community members can utilize a hybrid model of digital as well as non-digital tools to become entrepreneurs in the identified areas like fashion, stitching, handicrafts and other home businesses for women; modern agricultural skills, chef skills for local youth, marketing of products and access to finance and market for existing and upcoming businessmen in the communities.

Speaking on the occasion,Chairman NADRA, Tariq Malik said, “After the success of Mobile NADRA vehicle, we are excited to launch the NADRA Motorcycle Services - starting from Gokina Smart Village and shall soon be initiated all over Pakistan - where people will be able to avail all NADRA facilities close to their homes, such as family registration certificate, child registration certificate, etc.,”.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Haaris Mahmood Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)of USF said; “Gokina Smart Village project is an exemplary model of how we envision the future of digital inclusivity in Pakistan. Sustainable digital growth is key to accelerating rural development and supporting the socio-economic stability of individuals. The agenda of the USF has been to empower unserved and underserved communities. We look forward to transformative collaborations with our esteemed partners ITU, Huawei, NADRA, and Jazz, as well as service providers TeleTaleem and Sehat Kahani, to have a significant impact on the lives of the peoples.”

Addressing the occasion,Atsuko Okuda, Reginal Director of ITUsaid,“The Smart Village Pakistan initiative promotes a whole-of-government approach to bring the benefits of digital transformation in sectors such as health, education and agriculture to the rural and remote communities, leaving no one behind and offline”.

While also addressing the occasion, Ahmed Bilal Masud, Deputy CEO of Huawei Technologies Pakistan said, “Huawei continues to progress in Pakistan as a market leader with USF projects in the rural areas through our operators.  The challenges that come with digitalization are large, but the opportunity is even larger in Pakistan. Digitalization is essential for competitiveness, representing an incentive to increase the ability to play a more significant role in the international community.”

Gharpar Beauticians Teach Pakistani Women How To Do Breast Self-Exams.

Gharpar Beauticians Teach Pakistani Women How To Do Breast Self-Exams.

A Waxing Appointment That Could Save Lives: Gharpar Beauticians Teach Pakistani Women How To Do Breast Self-Exams.

A new initiative by the brand finds a smart way to overcome Pakistan’s social taboos and spread awareness around early detection of Breast Cancer.

Pakistan has found an unusual ally in its fight against breast cancer – the waxing lady. GharPar, Pakistan’s leading mobile app for at-home beauty services, recently trained their beauticians to offer customers breast self-exam tutorials.

The insight for the powerful campaign comes from the social convention that Pakistani women often hesitate to discuss breast cancer, or agree to get checked, even around their doctors or husbands. But there is one person whom they have a very intimate connection with and are especially open with when it comes to their bodies – their waxing ladies.

In a country as conservative as Pakistan, GharPar’s new initiative smartly navigates around social taboos that prevent open discussions of Breast Cancer, not only spreading much-needed awareness about the topic, but actually finding a way to teach women how to self-examine.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, and Pakistan has the highest number of cases in Asia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 26,000 women in Pakistan were diagnosed with breast cancer, and over 13,500 women died of the disease in 2020.

Sahar Suleman, Marketing Manager at Indus Hospital, the institution that trained the beauticians, said,

“We are glad to play a part in this initiative as healthcare partners to promote early detection of Breast Cancer in an effort to save precious lives of women in Pakistan.”

Early detection is key in the treatment of breast cancer. Experts recommend that women below the age of 40 should perform regular self-examinations and women above 40 should undergo regular mammography screenings. As a personal-care service provider, GharPar recognized its unique position as a brand that engages with women in a safe space and turned it into an educational tool. The brand tied up with Indus hospital to train its beauticians so that they could pass on this valuable knowledge. Waxing ladies are often booked on a monthly basis, which now serves as a timely reminder to self-examine.

Shameelah Ismail, CEO GharPar Technologies Pvt Ltd , said, “Checkup GharPar is extremely close to my heart because we have a history of breast cancer in my own family. And despite having a history, many

female family members refuse to get themselves tested. What I love about this campaign is that our beauticians have been trained by Indus Hospital to guide our clients on how to perform a breast self-exam. The app will have an option for female clients to opt in for this service. I hope that every time our clients call us for services, they are reminded to check themselves for a self-examination.”

With hundreds of bookings per day, across 6 cities in Pakistan, GharPar is hoping to remove the ignorance and stigma around breast cancer and make breast self-exam an integral part of self-care for women in Pakistan.

Islamabad: PTCL Group, Pakistan’s leading telecom and ICT services provider has achieved a double-digit revenue growth of 10.2% during the financial year 2022. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), posted 8.6% growth in its revenues, owing to its strong performance in both retail and business segments, whereas Ufone achieved 7.1% growth in its revenues. The Group’s subsidiary, U Microfinance Bank, kept a strong momentum and posted 35.4% revenue growth during 2022.

The company announced its annual financial results for the year 2022 at its Board of Directors’ meeting held in Islamabad.

Major Highlights of Financial Performance

PTCL Group

PTCL Group’s revenue has increased by 10.2% YoY to Rs 151.6 billion, mainly driven by strong performance in the consumer segment led by fixed broadband, mobile data, and wholesale & business solutions, along with microfinance services.

The Group’s profitability remained under pressure due to significant hike in power and fuel tariffs, devaluation of the Pak Rupee against USD, higher interest rates, and other costs associated with the acquisition of 4G spectrum and related network rollout. The Group has posted a net loss of Rs 7.8 billion.

PTCL

PTCL continued its strong performance throughout 2022. PTCL’s revenue of Rs 83.4 billion for the year 2022, highest ever in its history, is 8.6% higher than 2021, mainly driven by growth in broadband and wholesale & business solutions segments.

The company has posted operating profit of Rs 4.9 billion, which is 17% higher as compared to 2021.

Net profit of Rs 9 billion, highest since 2013, is 31.7% higher as compared to last year.

PTCL continued to upgrade its existing infrastructure and network, besides expanding its premium FTTH internet Flash Fiber across the country to offer seamless connectivity for greater customer experience. Flash Fiber showed unprecedented growth of 102.7%, taking lion’s share of the market’s net adds, whereas PTCL IPTV segment also grew by 8.1% YoY. Voice and wireless broadband segments witnessed decline due to conversion of customers to OTT services and competition from cellular operators.

PTCL has recently launched Pakistan’s largest OTT Streaming platform ‘SHOQ’ to provide premium entertainment, sports, and news content to all data users. As internet penetration has increased manifolds during the last few years, Pakistan needed a high-quality local OTT service that offers affordable entertainment.

Business services segment continued its momentum sustaining market leadership in IP Bandwidth, Cloud, Data Center, and other ICT services segments. PTCL’s Enterprise business grew by 18.8% as compared to last year, while Carrier and Wholesale business continued its growth momentum and achieved 11% overall revenue growth. PTML – Ufone:

In the year 2022, Ufone has recorded positive Net Adds with 3.9% YoY growth in subscriber base and has gained market share within the industry.

Since the acquisition of spectrum, Ufone has grown from strength to strength registering 7.1% YoY revenue growth in 2022 despite the challenges of increase in Advance Income Tax (AIT) and reduction in Mobile Termination Rates (MTR) and recent floods in the country.

This growth has been achieved through investment in network, aggressive product offering focusing on data and regional play.

Year 2022 was marked with a prime focus on data portfolio enrichment. An array of new offerings was launched targeting data-savvy younger segment resulting in more than 40% growth in data revenue.

Owing to its infrastructure modernization and fast deployment of 4G services across the country, the company has set a higher bar in voice and data service quality. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in its nationwide service quality benchmarking during 2022, declared Ufone the No. 01 voice and data network.

Ufone 4G has officially partnered with Islamabad United, the most successful franchise in HBL PSL history and the winner of the first and third editions of the tournament. The company will be the official telecommunications partner for the franchise for PSL 8.

During the second quarter, VIS Credit Rating Company has assigned initial entity ratings of ‘AA-/A-1’ (Double A Minus/A-One) to Ufone with outlook on the assigned ratings as ‘Stable’. U Bank

U Bank, the microfinance and branchless banking subsidiary of PTCL, continued its growth trajectory and achieved 35.4% growth in its revenue over last year by deepening its advances and investment portfolio, despite the challenging macro-economic situation, further exacerbated by the recent flood. The balance sheet footing of the bank reached Rs 221 billion as the bank continued to diversify its asset classes and funding streams while ensuring positive bottom-line impact.
