BOP Reports 278% Growth in Operating Profit During 1H-2025, Approves 10% Cash Dividend

Lahore: In a meeting held on August 29, 2025, the Board of Directors of The Bank of Punjab (BOP) reviewed and approved the un-audited financial statements, duly reviewed by the external auditors, for the first half of the year ended on June 30, 2025. The Board lauded the exceptional performance of the Bank, which not only exceeded expectations but also delivered unprecedented financial results across all key performance areas. This extraordinary performance has enabled the Bank to meet shareholders’ expectations by announcing, for the first time in its history, an Interim Cash Dividend of 10% (equivalent to Rs. 1 per share), in line with its dividend policy announced earlier this year.

In the face of business landscape marked by declining interest rates and pressure on industry margins, during 1st half of the year 2025, the Bank earned operating profit of Rs. 15.52 billion by achieving a remarkable growth of 278% over the corresponding period last year.

This stellar achievement demonstrates the strength of the Bank’s strategic vision, the resilience of its business model, and the effectiveness of its leadership. Net Interest Income also advanced impressively by 116% over the corresponding period last year, reaching Rs. 35.81 billion, underscoring the Bank’s capacity to generate robust core earnings. Improvement in Non-interest income reflected the success of income diversification and the deepening of fee-based revenue streams which registered an impressive growth of 40%.

Operational efficiency continued to show improvement with significant declining trend in the cost-to-income ratio, highlighting prudent cost management and enhanced productivity.

Bank’s profit before tax surged by 102% to Rs. 15.16 billion compared with Rs. 7.51 billion in 1st half 2024, while earnings per share increased to Rs. 2.08 from Rs. 1.47, despite the impact of a higher tax rate of 53%. These results demonstrate not only financial strength but also consistent value creation for shareholders.

The balance sheet further reinforced the Bank’s position of stability and growth. Total assets expanded to Rs. 2,444 billion, while deposits advanced by an impressive 23% to Rs. 1,947 billion, driven by a notable 43% increase in current deposits that illustrates rising customer confidence and effective deposit mobilization. Gross advances reached at Rs. 777 billion, while investments and lending to financial institutions stood at Rs. 1,435 billion, reflecting a well-calibrated and balanced approach to asset allocation. The Capital Adequacy Ratio strengthened to 17.42%, demonstrating Bank’s strong capital base and prudent risk management practices.

In addition to its stellar financial performance, the Bank continues to play a pivotal role in supporting national development and social uplift. The Bank has been successfully managing multiple Government of Punjab (GoPb) initiatives including the CM Punjab Asaan Karobar Scheme, CM Punjab Kissan Card, CM Punjab Livestock Card, CM Punjab Petrol/Electric Bikes, and the Apni Chat Apna Ghar Program.

Guided by the visionary leadership of the Honorable Chief Minister Punjab, BOP has acted as the enabler of these landmark initiatives. Together, these efforts are strengthening financial inclusion and accelerating economic progress across Punjab.

During FY25, the Bank led the SME and Agriculture sectors’ growth in the country in line with the true spirit of promoting financial inclusion. While the Bank’s overall share in lending to the SME sector surged to the level of 21% in terms of amount across the entire industry, its share in total growth in number of borrowers reached 97%. Additionally, on an industry-wide basis, 51% of the total year-on-year growth in Agriculture advances was contributed by BOP, whilst around 500,000 new first-time borrowers were added. The  Bank’s contribution in SME and Agriculture was driven by GoPb schemes using BOP’s Digital & AI Platform, which by default elevates it to the pole position in this future banking key success factor across the industry by a very wide margin, with an impressive recovery rate of over 96% reflecting a robust follow-up mechanism.

Equally significant has been the delivery of 50,000 houses under the Chief Minister Punjab’s Apni Chat Apna Ghar scheme in just the first six months of FY25 — an unprecedented effort in scale and speed within the housing sector. These loans were channeled through Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), with Akhuwat playing a leading role in enabling access for low-income households.

With this outstanding performance both on financial front and the development financing side, The Bank of Punjab continues to reaffirm its role as one of the most dynamic and impactful financial institution in Pakistan, driving both shareholder value and inclusive growth.

Europe’s July car sales rise most since April 2024, BYD ahead of Tesla

Europe’s July car sales rise most since April 2024, BYD ahead of Tesla

Karachi - New car sales in Europe rose 5.9% in July, the best month for more than a year in a boost for the struggling industry as consumer confidence weakens, European Automobile Manufacturers Association data showed on Thursday.

Plug-in hybrid sales in the European Union recorded the biggest jump since at least January 2023, when the ACEA started reporting the figure, while those of battery-electric cars had the biggest increase since August 2023.

Germany, which in June presented an EV incentive plan replacing a subsidy scheme removed in 2023, recorded increases of 58% and 83.6% in BEV and PHEV sales respectively in July.

Despite rising EV sales, battery-electric carmaker Tesla lost market share in Europe for a seventh consecutive month and trailed China's BYD, which was included in the monthly sales data for the first time.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Europe's battered car industry faces challenges including U.S. import tariffs, competition from China and difficulties in meeting profitably domestic regulations for EV adoption.

ACEA CEO Ola Kaellenius co-signed a letter on Wednesday to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying that EU targets to cut CO2 emissions from vehicles, including a 100% reduction for cars by 2035, are no longer feasible.

BY THE NUMBERS

Sales in the European Union, Britain and the European Free Trade Association rose to 1.09 million cars in July, ACEA data showed. Registrations at Volkswagen  and Renault  rose 11.6% and 8.8% year-on-year, respectively, but fell 1.1% at Stellantis

Tesla's sales dropped 40.2%, squeezing its market share to 0.8% from 1.4% a year ago. BYD's sales jumped 225.3% to give it 1.2% of the market.

Total EU car sales rose 7.4%. Registrations of battery electric, hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid cars were up 39.1%, 56.9% and 14.3%, respectively, to account collectively for 59.8% of the bloc's registrations, up from 51.1% in July 2024.

Overall sales in Germany rose 11.1%, and fell 5% in the UK, 7.7% in France and 5.1% in Italy. Spain, Poland and Austria recorded increases of 17.1%, 16.5% and 31.6%, respective

Spotify Unveils How Gen-Z is Redefining Music Discovery and Consumption in Pakistan

Karachi,  – As the world marks two iconic occasions in August, International Youth Day and World Hip-Hop Day, Spotify is shining a spotlight on how Pakistan’s Gen-Z is reshaping music discovery and consumption. With their phones in hand and earbuds in, young Pakistanis are not just listening to music, they are building communities, reviving genres, influencing global trends, and driving cultural movements on the world’s leading audio platform.

From genres spanning Desi Pop and Indie to the unapologetically raw sounds of Punjabi Hip-Hop, Spotify data shows that Gen-Z is tuning in most often between 10pm and midnight, with mobile remaining their go-to device for streaming. In fact, Gen-Z isn't just streaming, they're curating. Playlist creation is up 45% this year, featuring tracks such as “Jhol” by Annural Khalid and Maanu, “Bikhra” by Abdul Hannan and Rovalio, and “Wishes” by Hasan Raheem, Umair and Talwiinder.

When it comes to hip-hop, Pakistan’s youth are not just listeners, they’re trendsetters. Local hip-hop has exploded on Spotify with streams surging over 245% since 2022. Leading the charge is Talha Anjum, whose tracks “Departure Lane” and “Heartbreak Kid” with Umair have seen exponential streaming growth, 2,700% and 500% respectively, since their release in 2024. Rising stars like JJ47, Jokhay, and JANI are also fast gaining traction, with Umair himself emerging as a breakout artist with a remarkable 1,200% growth in streams since 2022.

“The appetite for new sounds that Gen-Z has, whether it’s Desi Pop or the raw energy of Hip-Hop, reflects the generation of music enthusiasts that is bold, expressive and unafraid to experiment," said Rutaba Yaqub, Artist & Label Partnerships Manager at Spotify for Pakistan and UAE. “It is exciting to see how they are not only streaming but actively curating and building communities on Spotify. This generation is clearly setting the tone for Pakistan’s music scene by amplifying voices of their favourite artists and pushing them onto the global stages.”

The top local voices in Gen-Z’s streaming reflect a generation that embraces both nostalgia and new finds. Talha Anjum, Umair, Atif Aslam, Hasan Raheem and Bayaan dominate the charts, while albums like “Safar” by Bayaan, “My Terrible Mind” by Talha Anjum, and “ROCKSTAR WITHOUT A GUITAR” by Umair have become cultural touchpoints for young listeners.

As Spotify continues to elevate local talent, these insights showcase Pakistan’s youth as passionate, expressive, and connected through music that transcends borders while remaining deeply rooted in their own culture and stories.

Toxic Methanol in Illegal Liquor Kills 13 in Kuwait, Victims Mostly Migrant Workers

Kuwait's Health Ministry Confirms Methanol Poisoning as Death Toll Rises to 13

At least 13 people have died and 21 have been blinded after consuming poisonous alcohol in the Gulf state of Kuwait. According to reports, more than 63 individuals are in critical condition.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths and stated that over 63 people are in critical condition, with 31 having been placed on ventilators. The ministry's statement revealed that the toxic alcohol was found to contain methanol, an extremely dangerous chemical. Health experts note that methanol is a deadly poison that directly attacks the liver, brain, and optic nerves, with its first major effect being the loss or weakening of eyesight.

The majority of the victims are migrant workers from South Asia who are employed in construction, domestic, and commercial services in Kuwait. It is worth noting that Kuwait has had a complete ban on the import of alcohol since 1964, and drinking was criminalized in the 1980s. Despite these strict prohibitions, the secret sale of illegally produced alcohol remains a persistent issue, often affecting poor expatriates.

Collection and recycling value chain for used beverage cartons

Lahore – Tetra Pak Pakistan Limited and Bulleh Shah Packaging (Private) Limited (BSP) have entered into a strategic collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at creating a commercially viable collection and recycling value chain for used beverage cartons (UBC) in Pakistan.

This collaboration will enable BSP to develop UBC’s (Used Beverage Cartons) collection network, by activating BSP's current collection centres (Hubs) to work with UBC’s,  identifying and adding new stakeholders into the system and strengthening the value chain with the deployment of UBC champions and Digital tools.

The MoU focuses on scaling up the collection, transportation, and recycling capacity of UBCs through partnerships with waste management companies and scrap dealers, while also conducting thorough value chain assessments to improve operational efficiency and pricing transparency. In addition, the two organizations will work together to implement real-time data reporting through Tetra Pak’s digital platforms, ensuring greater transparency across the value chain that is an impact unique to this partnership in which digital traceability transforms used beverage cartons from anonymous waste into trackable assets—fueling transparency, sustainability, and smarter recycling.

BSP will use recovered fibers from UBCs to manufacture recycled paper-based packaging products such as liner, fluting, and kraft, thus reducing dependency on imported Old corrugated cartons (OCC) fiber.

This initiative reflects Tetra Pak and BSP’s shared commitment to environmental sustainability, resource efficiency, and community impact through a structured and transparent formal recycling model.

Monsoon Devastation in Upper Pakistan: Over 200 Dead as Flash Floods Hit KP and AJK

Khayber Pakhtunkhwa Declared Disaster-Struck After Cloudbursts and Landslides

Death Toll Rises to 200 in KP as Authorities Declare Flood Emergency

Widespread Destruction in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The seventh spell of monsoon rains has brought widespread devastation to Pakistan's upper regions, with the death toll in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone surpassing 200 people. The calamity, caused by cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides, has also left dozens injured and several missing. The Deputy Commissioner of Buner confirmed 91 deaths in his district, which, along with Bajaur, Battagram, and Mansehra, has been declared a disaster-stricken area.

The intense rainfall and resulting flash floods have paralyzed life, causing river overflows, land erosion, and the closure of key roads. In response to the crisis, a flood emergency has been declared in Buner. The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts that the heavy rains will continue intermittently until August 21st, raising fears of further destruction.

NDMA and PDMA Reports

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a total of 150 people died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the past 24 hours due to rains, floods, landslides, and lightning strikes. The victims include 128 men, 9 women, and 13 children. Additionally, the NDMA reported 5 deaths in Gilgit-Baltistan and 9 in Azad Kashmir. Both the Pakistan Army and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) are engaged in extensive rescue operations, urging citizens to take safety precautions.

The PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa released its own report, stating a total of 189 fatalities and 21 injuries. The report confirmed that 91 people died in Buner, 23 each in Shangla and Mansehra, 21 in Bajaur, 15 in Battagram, 11 in Swat, and 5 in Lower Dir. The floods have also damaged 45 houses, killed 43 animals, and rendered many roads impassable.

Government and Military Response

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has released a total of Rs50 crore for the most affected districts: Rs15 crore for Buner, Rs10 crore each for Bajaur, Battagram, and Mansehra, and Rs5 crore for Swat. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has announced a day of mourning throughout the province.

The Pakistan Army has launched a flood relief operation in the most affected areas of Swat and Bajaur, utilizing helicopters to rescue stranded individuals and provide urgent supplies like rations and medicine. The local population has praised the army's prompt response.

Impact Across Regions - Pakistan Army and NDMA Launch Massive Relief and Rescue Operations

The devastation extends beyond Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Azad Kashmir, 18 people have died from cloudbursts and landslides, which have cut off land links in many areas. Similarly, in Gilgit-Baltistan, 10 people have died in floods, and major roads like the Shandur and Deosai roads are blocked, leaving a large number of tourists stranded.

The Prime Minister has instructed the NDMA to coordinate with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to expedite relief and rescue efforts. In Punjab, the PDMA has issued a fact sheet indicating low-level floods in the Indus, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers, with some areas of Sindh also bracing for heavy rainfall in the coming week.
