One-Legged Rider Solaiman Inspires Millions with Unstoppable Determination

Solaiman, a 23-year-old Foodpanda delivery rider in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has emerged as a powerful symbol of resilience and determination, inspiring thousands across social media. His journey is not just about delivering food—it is a story of perseverance in the face of life’s harshest challenges.

At the age of five, Solaiman lost his leg after a tragic fall from a tree. Just a year later, he faced another heartbreaking loss when his mother passed away. Despite these early setbacks, he refused to let circumstances define his future. With unwavering determination, Solaiman spent nearly a decade learning how to ride a bicycle using only one leg—turning what many would see as a limitation into his greatest strength.

Today, he navigates the bustling and often chaotic streets of Dhaka as a delivery rider, balancing his work with university studies to support himself and his family. Known for his relentless work ethic and positive mindset, Solaiman never seeks sympathy or makes excuses for his condition. Instead, he focuses on moving forward, one delivery at a time.

His inspiring journey gained formal recognition in March 2026 during the “Panda Rider Grand Iftar,” where Foodpanda Bangladesh honored him with an e-bike to ease his daily workload and improve his mobility. The gesture not only acknowledged his hard work but also amplified his story as a beacon of hope.

Solaiman’s story serves as a reminder that determination can overcome even the toughest obstacles. Widely shared online, his journey continues to motivate young people, proving that resilience, courage, and hard work can redefine what is possible.

Fuel Conservation: Indonesia Shifts to Remote Work Amidst Middle East Tension

Fuel Conservation: Indonesia Shifts to Remote Work Amidst Middle East Tension

Global Ripple Effects: Travel Bans and Energy Risks Escalate

Indonesia's Ministry of Defence and military are implementing a one-day-a-week remote work policy to save fuel as the Middle East crisis tightens global energy supplies. Aligned with President Prabowo Subianto's efficiency directives, the move includes shifting some departments to a four-day in-office week to reduce commuting and operational costs. The government plans to monitor the impact of this work-from-home arrangement before potentially expanding it to other sectors.

The broader geopolitical crisis, sparked by a joint U.S.-Israel offensive on Iran and subsequent retaliations, has led to severe travel restrictions and flight cancellations. Hong Kong has raised travel alerts for Iran and Israel to the "black" level, and Cathay Pacific has halted Dubai flights through May 2026 due to security risks. Furthermore, Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz poses a significant threat to global energy stability, particularly affecting Asian economies.

Ministry of Commerce Seeks Action Over Additional Cargo Charges on Meat Exports

Ministry of Commerce Seeks Action Over Additional Cargo Charges on Meat Exports

KARACHI: The Ministry of Commerce has formally sought the intervention of aviation authorities over complaints from meat exporters regarding additional logistics charges imposed on export consignments, marking a significant development in an ongoing dispute that industry representatives warn could disrupt Pakistan’s meat exports.

In an official letter dated March 17, 2026, the Ministry of Commerce asked the Director General of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) in Karachi to look into the issue of “unauthorized additional charges” reportedly being levied by cargo handling company Gerry’s Dnata on meat export shipments.

The communication followed a complaint submitted by the All Pakistan Meat Exporters and Processors Association (APMEPA), which raised concerns that the newly imposed charges were increasing export costs and affecting the industry’s competitiveness in international markets.

According to exporters, Gerry’s Dnata recently introduced an additional charge of PKR 50 per kilogram on meat exports and warned that consignments would not be processed for shipment unless the payment was made.

Industry representatives say the additional levy translates into roughly $180 per ton, a cost escalation that could significantly impact exporters operating in highly competitive global markets.

Officials in the Ministry of Commerce noted in the letter that the Prime Minister’s Committee on Export of Surplus Food Items to GCC Countries had been informed during a meeting on March 15 that the additional charges had already been withdrawn.

However, exporters maintain that the issue has not been fully resolved and that the charges are still being applied in practice, prompting the Ministry to ask the aviation regulator to examine the matter and resolve it to the satisfaction of exporters.

The Ministry has also asked that the committee be updated on the outcome of the inquiry.

Exporters warn that continued uncertainty around cargo handling costs could disrupt shipments of perishable meat products, which rely heavily on tightly managed cold-chain logistics and air cargo operations.

Pakistan’s meat export sector has expanded steadily over the past decade, supplying halal meat to key markets across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region as well as Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.

Industry stakeholders say maintaining predictable logistics costs is essential to sustaining this growth, particularly as Pakistan competes with established exporters such as Brazil and Australia in global meat markets.

Exporters have urged authorities to ensure that cargo handling charges remain transparent and regulated, arguing that sudden and unilateral cost increases could undermine the country’s export competitiveness at a time when Pakistan is seeking to boost foreign exchange earnings through higher value-added food exports.

BYD-MMC Delivers 100 Atto 2 Vehicles Across Pakistan in a Single Day

Karachi – Mega Motor Company (MMC), the official partner of BYD in Pakistan, marked another milestone in the country’s growing New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market by delivering 100 Atto 2 vehicles to customers nationwide in a single day.

Building on the momentum of BYD’s earlier launches and deliveries in Pakistan, this nationwide delivery milestone reflects the increasing adoption of electric mobility and the growing presence of BYD vehicles on roads across the country.

As more BYD vehicles take to the roads across Pakistan, our priority is to ensure that customers receive not only advanced electric vehicles, but also a seamless ownership journey supported by strong service and customer care. The encouraging pace of EV adoption and the growing number of BYD vehicles already on the road reflect the increasing confidence Pakistani consumers have in electric mobility.”

“The whole process from booking to delivery was very smooth, and it feels great to finally receive the car. Getting the delivery just before Eid makes it even more special for my family. The team kept us informed throughout, and the experience at the delivery event was very well organised.”

PTML (Ufone) enters 5G race armed with the largest share of the global standard 3.5 GHz spectrum

PTML (Ufone) enters 5G race armed with the largest share of the global standard 3.5 GHz spectrum

Islamabad – Pakistani telecom operator, Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), operating as Ufone, has formally entered Pakistan’s 5G landscape armed with the largest share of the critical 3500 MHz frequency band, a global standard in 5G connectivity. Subject to regulatory approvals, the planned amalgamation of Telenor Pakistan into Ufone is expected to position the combined entity, MergeCo, as the largest spectrum holder in Pakistan’s telecom industry.

MergeCo will hold the largest and most diversified spectrum portfolio of 292.4 MHz, 8 MHz more than the closest competitor, spanning low, mid, and high frequency bands. This will position the company to deliver top quality digital services to both individual and enterprise customers.

PTML (Ufone) followed an aggressive 5G acquisition strategy to secure the largest share in the 3500 MHz band, which is the global benchmark for 5G, alongside an additional 60 MHz in the 2600 MHz band to deliver blazing fast data speeds and a consistently superior user experience.

Moreover, PTML’s 120 MHz contiguous spectrum will support wider 5G channels in line with global standards, translating into higher peak speeds, faster and more stable data throughput, and the ability to serve a significantly larger number of concurrent users, particularly in high-demand urban environments.

Post amalgamation, the MergeCo’s enhanced capacity will unlock a new generation of digital experiences, including seamless ultra-high-definition streaming, immersive cloud gaming, augmented and virtual reality applications, and faster access to a growing ecosystem of digital platforms and services serving both Individual and Corporate customers.

Apart from clocking blistering speeds, MergeCo will lead in nationwide coverage. With 44.8 MHz of spectrum, the largest in industry, in low-frequency bands such as 850 MHz and 900 MHz, the company is well-positioned to extend reliable internet services across rural and semi-urban areas. The MergeCo will leverage the industry’s largest telecom footprint to deliver consistent coverage, improved quality, and enhanced user experience across Pakistan. This integration will also uplift the overall 4G experience for customers nationwide.

Commenting on this milestone, President & CEO, PTCL & Ufone, Hatem Bamatraf said, “PTML now controls the largest share of the global standard 3.5 GHz spectrum, twice as much as any competitor, giving us the ability to set the benchmark for speed and performance in Pakistan. Especially post Telenor Pakistan integration, we will become the largest spectrum holder in the market, which will put us in a position to take digital services to the next level, delivering faster speeds, broader coverage, and experiences that truly matter to our customers. Our goal has always been to build a network that empowers individuals, businesses, and communities across the country, and today we are closer than ever to making that a reality.”

With its matchless spectrum assets and nationwide footprint, the MergeCo will deliver a seamless, inclusive, and high-quality 5G experience, while continuing Ufone’s legacy as a proudly Pakistani brand committed to connecting and empowering communities.

Pakistan to Establish First AI Hub at LUMS with Gates Foundation Support, Focus on Maternal & Child Health

Pakistan to Establish First AI Hub at LUMS with Gates Foundation Support, Focus on Maternal & Child Health

LUMS Awarded Major Grant to Establish Pakistan’s First National AI Hub, Launching with a Flagship Focus on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health

LAHORE: Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has been awarded a major multi-year grant from the Gates Foundation to establish Pakistan’s first nationally coordinated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub. The Hub will launch with a flagship focus on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH), one of the country’s most urgent public health priorities, while being designed as a long-term national platform that will progressively expand to address other critical development challenges facing Pakistan. The initiative is also supported by Mubarik Imam, member of the Advisory Board at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS.

The National AI Hub is significant because it brings together two of Pakistan’s leading research universities, LUMS and Aga Khan University (AKU), to address the critical challenge of maternal, newborn, and child health. LUMS will build on its longstanding expertise in artificial intelligence, language technologies, gender and technology research, and digital public health innovation, while AKU will serve as a key technical and clinical partner, contributing to the development of large maternal health datasets, providing clinical expertise, and supporting evaluation and field testing of AI-enabled interventions across diverse care settings. The AI Hub will enable the development and scaling of AI-driven healthcare solutions tailored to Pakistan’s underserved populations, using timely predictive analytics to strengthen prevention, early diagnosis, and continuity of care. It is designed to deliver impact at a national scale.

The AI Hub will be led by Dr. Maryam Mustafa, Associate Professor of Computer Science at SBASSE, LUMS, with Professor Fyezah Jehan, Chair of the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at AKU, collaborating closely on clinical design and implementation. The Hub will also convene government partners, clinicians, AI researchers, policymakers, and innovators to strengthen early diagnosis, clinical decision-making, referral pathways, and continuity of care for women and newborns nationwide.

“This is a milestone moment for both LUMS and Pakistan,” said Dr. Maryam Mustafa. “We are launching this Hub with maternal, newborn, and child health because this is where the need is most urgent and the opportunity for immediate impact is greatest. At the same time, our vision is to build a nationally anchored, responsible AI platform, one that can grow over time to support multiple sectors where data-driven intelligence can strengthen public systems and improve lives across the country.”

This national initiative builds on a successful earlier Grand Challenges grant led by Dr. Maryam Mustafa, titled Awaaz-e-Sehat: Empowering Maternal Healthcare with Voice-Enabled Electronic Record Management. The project demonstrated how voice technology and multilingual interfaces can support frontline health workers and improve continuity of care in low-resource settings.

Sharing her views, Ms. Mubarik Imam stated, “Honoured to support Pakistan’s first AI hub, a pioneering partnership between LUMS & AKU. Limited access to specialist expertise continues to drive preventable loss of life and poor health outcomes among women and children; AI can change that by democratizing world-class medical knowledge for frontline healthcare workers from Astore to Ziarat. This hub is built for impact, equipping researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs to tackle Pakistan’s toughest challenges, starting with maternal, newborn, and child health, and creating scalable models for the Global South.”

Pakistan continues to face some of the highest maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the region. Maternal mortality currently stands at 186 deaths per 100,000 live births, driven by limited access to quality antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care; shortages of skilled health workers; weak referral systems; and delays in managing critical complications such as hemorrhage, eclampsia, and sepsis. These challenges are further compounded by language and literacy barriers, fragmented health data systems, and social and economic constraints that delay timely care.

LUMS Awarded Major Grant to Establish Pakistan’s First National AI Hub, Launching with a Flagship Focus on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health

The AI Hub will address these gaps by working within existing health systems to deploy ethical, evidence-based, and locally relevant AI tools and by bringing timely, life-saving support closer to the women and families who need it most. For a mother in a remote village, this could mean earlier identification of pregnancy-related risks and faster referrals in case of complications. These also include AI-enabled risk prediction and decision-support systems for frontline health workers; speech-based and multilingual tools to bridge literacy and language barriers; strengthened referral and follow-up mechanisms; and frameworks to enable interoperability across health data systems. The Hub is explicitly designed to move beyond proof-of-concept pilots by integrating AI tools into national care pathways and enabling sustainable, system-wide impact.

Beyond its initial focus on MNCH, the AI Hub is envisioned as a national platform for responsible AI innovation aligned with Pakistan’s public-interest priorities. As it matures, the Hub’s infrastructure, governance, and technical capabilities will be extended to additional nationally relevant areas. The initiative will also strengthen Pakistan’s AI ecosystem through capacity building, policy development, AI governance, and support for startups working at the intersection of AI and social impact, while advancing Pakistan’s commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, particularly in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.

With this historic investment, Pakistan joins a small group of countries building nationally coordinated, responsible AI platforms to address maternal, newborn, and child health, while laying the foundation for broader, cross-sectoral impact. The initiative aligns with similar efforts supported by the Gates Foundation in Africa, where AI Scaling Hubs are being established in Rwanda, Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya as national platforms to scale mature AI solutions across health, education, and agriculture by coordinating ecosystem actors, enabling access to data and compute, and embedding solutions into public systems.

Pakistan’s Beetroot Sugar Exports Gain Demand in Gulf Markets

Pakistan’s Beetroot Sugar Exports Gain Demand in Gulf Markets

Beetroot Sugar Still Just 1% of Pakistan’s Production Despite Rising Exports

LAHORE (APP - 15 March 2026): With coherent policy support, sustained investment, and market-driven ambition, the beetroot sugar could emerge as one of Pakistan’s most quietly transformative agricultural success stories.

Convener of FPCCI Regional Committee on Food, Shahid Imran stated this in a meeting with progressive farmers delegation led by Ms Sana Abdullah Chaudhry here Sunday

Pakistan’s beetroot sugar export, he added, are still small in volume with one percent share in total sugar production of the country, whereas globally, beet is cornerstone of industrial agriculture. Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait have emerged as primary destinations, driven by demand for refined and specialty sugar products. Export prices averaged over USD 3,300 per tonne in 2024, signalling improving quality, packaging, and market acceptance, he mentioned.

Shahid Imran was of view that expanding beetroot sugar can reduce dependence on sugarcane; smooth seasonal supply fluctuations; conserve water resources; and unlock non-traditional export revenues.

“At a time when climate volatility and global price swings threaten agricultural stability, diversification is not simply prudent – it is essential,” he remarked.

The Convener said, sugar beet cultivation remains concentrated in regions with favourable temperatures, soil structure, and irrigation access. Farmers in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have beginning to recognise that sugar beet is not merely a substitute crop, but a structural solution to rising water stress, declining soil health, and volatile cane pricing, he added.

For decades, he said, sugarcane has dominated Pakistan’s sweetener landscape, consuming vast quantities of water and tying the country’s sugar economy to a single crop cycle. Beetroot sugar, by contrast, offers a compelling alternative. It requires 30-40 percent less water than sugarcane, matures in five to six months instead of 12-14, and delivers higher sugar recovery rates, often ranging between 14 percent and 18 percent, compared to sugarcane average of 9-10 percent.

From viral trend to rare Treasure: Kashmiri bangles sweep Pakistan’s Eid markets

ISLAMABAD, Mar 15 (APP):In the crowded lanes of Moti Bazaar in Rawalpindi, the glow of colourful bangles reflects under bright shop lights as women move from counter to counter in search of a single item.

“Do you have Kashmiri bangles?”

From viral trend to rare Treasure: Kashmiri bangles sweep Pakistan’s Eid markets

It is the same question echoing across markets this Eid season.

For many women, Eid-ul-Fitr — the festival of joy and colours — feels incomplete without the deep shades of henna and the cheerful clinking of bangles. But this year, a new sound has joined the celebrations: the delicate chime of Kashmiri bangles, whose tiny ghungroos are ringing through markets and social media alike.

From viral trend to rare Treasure: Kashmiri bangles sweep Pakistan’s Eid markets

What started as a viral fashion moment online has quickly turned into one of the most sought-after and surprisingly rare items in Pakistan’s Eid markets.

When worn together, the bright red, emerald green, golden and turquoise sets appear like a rainbow from Kashmir resting on the wrists.

From viral trend to rare Treasure: Kashmiri bangles sweep Pakistan’s Eid markets

From the historic lanes of Moti Bazaar in Rawalpindi to Islamabad’s busy shopping centres including Karachi Company, Aabpara and I-9 Markaz, traders say the demand for Kashmiri bangles has risen sharply this Eid season.

The bangles are easily recognised by their four small ghungroo-decorated kadas, paired with slim glass or metal bangles that fill the rest of the set. Customers can choose whether the filling is glass, metal, or a mix of both, creating colourful combinations that sparkle when worn together.

What has surprised traders most is the sudden increase in price. A set that was earlier sold for around Rs350 is now being sold for up to Rs3,500, while in many markets the bangles have become difficult to find.

In Moti Bazaar, Shaukat, who has been running Kiran Bangles House for nearly two decades, told APP that the bangles once had very limited demand.

“These bangles used to lie in our warehouses for years,” he said. “Then a Pakistani actress wore them in a video that spread on social media. Suddenly everyone started asking for them and our entire stock finished within days.”

Many social media users have linked the trend to actress Mahira Khan, whose elegant appearance helped bring the bangles into the spotlight.

Another trader in the market, Irfan, said almost every woman entering his shop now asks for Kashmiri bangles before looking at anything else.

“The other bangles we stocked are still lying in our cupboards,” he said. “But Kashmiri bangles have become rare.”

Trader Ahmed said the sudden demand just days before Eid has created pressure on manufacturers and importers.

“The demand rose overnight,” he explained. “There is very little time before Eid, so suppliers are struggling to bring enough stock.”

Shoppers say the popularity of the bangles is not only about fashion but also about admiration for Kashmiri culture and beauty.

“I saw them on Instagram and other social media platforms and thought they would look perfect with my Eid outfit,” said Neelam Shehzadi, a 20-year-old girl from the Gawal Mandi area of Rawalpindi.

She rushed to the market to buy a set but was disappointed to learn that the shops had already sold out.

At a shopping plaza in Malakabad on Murree Road, another woman searching from shop to shop said she might now have to visit Moti Bazaar to find the bangles.

Traders say that traditionally Hyderabad and Sukkur glass bangles have dominated Pakistan’s Eid markets. Popular varieties include lacha bangles, lacquer bangles, pearl bangles, metal kadas, stone-studded bangles and colourful glass sets worn by generations of women.

But this year, they say, the rainbow colours of Kashmiri bangles have overshadowed almost every other style.

“It feels like the colours of Kashmir have spread across the markets,” one trader remarked.

Hamza, a bangle seller at Malakabad Plaza, said his entire stock was sold out days before Eid.

“Now people who bought them earlier are even selling them online at higher prices,” he said.

Among the shoppers was Dr Kanwal, who had come to buy bangles for her daughter Anaya.

“My daughter has only one wish this Eid,” she said with a smile. “She wants to wear Kashmiri bangles.”

As Eid draws closer, the soft chime of ghungroos continues to echo through busy bazaars and social media videos alike. This Eid the colours of Kashmir are not only seen in the valleys. They are now shining on the wrists of women across Pakistan.

Muhammad Sohail Afridi Unveils Development Vision for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Muhammad Sohail Afridi has outlined a comprehensive development roadmap for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, directing officials to finalize PC-1 documents for all projects under the 2026–27 Annual Development Program (ADP) by June 1. Speaking during a video-link meeting of the Planning and Development Department, the chief minister emphasized accelerating overall provincial development while prioritizing backward districts and sectors that directly benefit the public, including education, healthcare, employment, and basic services.

During the meeting, officials reviewed the progress of the current 2025–26 fiscal year, noting that about 67 percent of the released funds have already been utilized. Around 218 high-priority projects are expected to be completed in the coming year. The provincial government has also allocated Rs29.6 billion for the development of merged tribal districts, although federal funds for the rapid development program in these areas are still awaited.

For the next fiscal cycle, the government plans to allocate 80 percent of development funds to ongoing projects and 20 percent to new initiatives. Facebook Tightens Rules on Copycat Content, Expands Monetization for Creators

Meta has announced new measures aimed at rewarding creators who publish original content on Facebook, while reducing the visibility of copied or unoriginal posts. The company said the initiative is part of its broader effort to make Facebook Feed and Reels more relevant by limiting spam and discouraging impersonation and duplicate content.

According to Meta, creators producing original content are now receiving greater reach and improved monetization opportunities on Facebook. The company reported that both views and watch time for original Reels nearly doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. At the same time, Meta has taken strong action against impersonation, removing more than 20 million fake accounts posing as well-known creators, which led to a 33 percent drop in impersonation-related reports.

Facebook has also updated its guidelines to clearly define what qualifies as “original” content. Videos filmed or produced directly by a creator will be considered original, while posts that simply re-upload, stitch together, or slightly edit another creator’s content may be deprioritized in recommendations. Creators who transform third-party material with meaningful commentary, new information, or creative additions can still qualify for recommendations and monetization.

In addition, Facebook is testing improvements to its content protection tool to help creators identify potential impersonators and report them more easily. The new feature will allow creators to detect copied or impersonated content in one place through their professional dashboard. Meta says these updates are part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring authentic creators are recognized, protected, and rewarded on the platform.
