Islamabad, 27th June - Zong 4G, Pakistan's leading telecommunications company, has emerged victorious once again by winning the prestigious “Content of the Year” award at the esteemed Pakistan Digital Awards. The award recognizes Zong 4G's exceptional creativity, innovation, and outstanding execution in their remarkable campaign titled "The Notes of Chagla" released on Independence Day, 2022, as a tribute.

"The Notes of Chagla" was a one-of-its-kind campaign that captured the hearts and minds of millions across the nation. Through this remarkable initiative, Zong 4G sought to shed light on the life and achievements of an unsung hero, A.G Chagla, whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the fabric of our nation. For those who are unaware, Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla is revered for writing the music for our national anthem in 1949.

The campaign resonated deeply with audiences, captivating their attention through its compelling storytelling. Zong 4G's dedication to highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of A.G Chagla struck a chord with viewers, fostering a sense of pride and patriotism amongst Pakistanis.

The short film introduced the audience to a boy, who is working on his musicology thesis. Seeing him struggle, his mother encouraged him to explore the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan. Intrigued, the boy conducted research to find that one ideal melody. While on this journey, he discovered the National Anthem, Pak Sarzameen, composed by A.G Chagla in 1949, only one year after he was appointed to the National Anthem Committee (NAC).

The film, titled ‘Celebrating 75 years of Azadi –The Notes of Chagla’ empowers the protagonist to utilize the power of digital to shed light on the stories of Unsung National Heroes, both big and small. The film featured acclaimed actors Shehryar Munawar and Simi Raheal and was distributed across all of Zong 4G’s social media platforms.

To continue making a significant impact, UFL stands at the forefront with unwavering dedication. UFL has continued its commitment through Sunridge Taqatwar Pakistan program by launching a major food ration donation drive for 20,000 families in collaboration with Governor Sindh.

To cater the pressing needs of underprivileged families, Unity Foods will generously donate 20,000 ration packs, starting this June through Governor Sindh. The beneficiaries will be verified by a collaborative effort between Unity Foods and the office of Governor Sindh. In the light of this campaign Governor Sindh said, " Unity Foods & Sunridge Taqatwar Pakistan Program, aims to alleviate the suffering of the common man by providing essential commodities in the form of ration packs. Today we are distributing 20,000 ration packs of 27 kg that are sufficient to cater to a family of five for a month. I am proud of the contribution of Unity Foods and its CEO Farrukh Ameen for Sunridge Taqatwar Pakistan Program. Ericsson Mobility Report: Global 5G growth continues

Ericsson Mobility Report: Global 5G growth continues

Ericsson Mobility Report: Global 5G growth continues

·         5G mobile subscriptions are growing in every region and forecast to top 1.5 billion globally by the end of 2023

·         Continued revenue growth in leading 5G markets

5G continues to drive innovation in mobile service packaging

Despite geopolitical challenges and macroeconomic slowdown in some markets, communications service providers worldwide are continuing to invest in 5G, the June 2023 edition of the Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) Mobility Report shows.

The latest Ericsson Mobility Report reveals that the uptake of 5G subscriptions in North America has been stronger than expected in previous forecasts. At the end of 2022, the region had the highest 5G global subscription penetration at 41 percent.

5G subscriptions are rising in every region worldwide and forecast to reach 1.5 billion by the end of 2023. Global mobile network data traffic continues to grow with the monthly global average usage per smartphone expected to exceed 20 GB by the end of 2023.

The report also shows continued revenue growth in leading 5G markets. Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, says: “The global adoption of 5G technology has surpassed one billion subscriptions, bringing positive revenue growth for communications service providers in leading 5G markets. We see a strong link between the increase in 5G subscriptions and service revenue. Over the past two years, the introduction of 5G services in the top twenty markets has resulted in a seven percent revenue boost. This trend shows the growing value of 5G, benefiting users and service providers alike.”

Worldwide, around 240 communications service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services and about 35 have deployed or launched 5G standalone (SA). The most common 5G services launched by service providers for consumers are enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), gaming and some AR/VR-based services, such as training and education.

The report also reveals that 5G continues to drive innovation in mobile service packaging. Among CSPs, it is increasingly common to offer bundles with various popular entertainment services included such as television, music streaming or cloud gaming platforms. About 58 percent of 5G service providers currently do this in various forms.

More than 100 CSPs, comprising about 40 percent of FWA service providers, currently offer FWA over 5G.

FWA is growing solidly in terms of:

·         Number of mobile service providers offering FWA

·         Proportion of those offering FWA over 5G

·         Proportion of CSPs with speed-based tariff structures

·         Amount of traffic served, as both number of connections and traffic volume per connection increase.

By 2028 5G is estimated to account for almost 80 percent of all FWA connections.

The June 2023 Ericsson Mobility Report includes four in-depth articles:

·         Exploring how traffic patterns drive network evolution

·         Exploring differentiated service with 5G networks

·         AR uptake enabled by mobile networks

·         Mobile quality of experience: Network readiness for new services

Ericsson rides the next wave of 5G with new RedCap solution

Ericsson rides the next wave of 5G with new RedCap solution

Ericsson rides the next wave of 5G with new RedCap solution

Ericsson unveiled today a new reduced capability RAN software that will enable new 5G use cases and enhance existing ones for an array of devices such as smartwatches, other wearables, and industry sensors by lowering complexity and extending battery life.

Known as Ericsson Reduced Capability (RedCap), the solution will be commercially ready in November 2023 as a software addition to 5G standalone (5G SA) networks powered by Ericsson, with no need for any new hardware. RedCap will strengthen the ecosystem for new types of devices that can be connected to 5G networks.

An expanded New Radio (NR) device ecosystem with new capabilities will in turn spur the growth of even more 5G use cases. Ericsson RedCap will support leaner procedures for optimizing device energy consumption and enable wearables that are currently only available with LTE devices.

David Hammarwall, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, says: “Ericsson Reduced Capability will open up a new world of possibilities for new types of devices that do not require the full range of 5G’s capabilities. The RedCap software will enhance 5G connectivity for everything from consumer wearables to industrial sensors in a way that is both cost- and energy-efficient, unlocking a whole range of new use cases.”

With the new 5G radio access network (RAN) software solution, communications service providers can offer more connectivity options for diverse consumer and enterprise use cases and in industrial settings on the FDD (frequency division duplex) and TDD (time division duplex) spectrums.

Ericsson RedCap will support devices with reduced complexity such as low-end augmented reality (AR) wearables, video surveillance equipment, industrial sensors, and smart grids. The new solution is more energy-efficient than existing LTE low categories and it has already caught the attention of the wearable OEM (original equipment manufacturer) industry.

Bill Stone, Vice President for Technology Planning at Verizon, says: "5G is designed fundamentally as a highly customizable service. The evolution of NR RedCap from Ericsson, coupled with the advanced technologies deployed throughout our 5G network, will serve to bring that customization to life for a variety of devices, allowing us to efficiently allocate network resources while giving customers the best possible experience on our network. We look forward to how this advancement will help evolve the 5G ecosystem."

Ericsson is closely collaborating with leading chipset vendors to bring multiple types of 5G devices to the market. HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems & Partnerships at MediaTek, says: “MediaTek's upcoming solutions supporting 5G RedCap will certainly benefit from Ericsson’s infrastructure readiness, ensuring that operators, consumers and businesses can immediately benefit from the next generation of innovative 5G products and services.”

What is NR RedCap?

New Radio (NR) RedCap is a device category that will help expand the 5G ecosystem, enabling significantly more connections to the 5G network. It does so by bridging the capability and complexity gap between Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) uses in existing 5G settings, with an optimized design for mid-tier use cases.

RedCap can effectively scale down the complexity, size and capabilities of device platforms to offer cost-efficient integration into devices such as wearables and industrial sensors. Part of a concept that was originally introduced in 3GPP Release 17, RedCap brings a mix of capabilities in throughput, battery life, complexity, and device density needed to cost-effectively power diverse use cases that do not always need the high-performance capability of current 5G technology.

Spotify fined $5mn for breaching EU data rules

Spotify fined $5mn for breaching EU data rules

STOCKHOLM (AFP): Music streaming giant Spotify was on Tuesday fined 58 million kronor ($5.4 million) for not properly informing users on how data it collected on them was being used, Swedish authorities said.

Spotify said it planned to appeal the decision.

The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection’s (IMY) said it had reviewed “how Spotify handles customers’ right of access to their personal data.”

“As a result of the shortcomings identified, IMY is imposing a fine of 58 million kronor on the company,” the authority said.

The regulator noted that under the rules of the European data protection act GDPR, users have a right to know what data a company has about an individual and how that data is being used.

IMY said that while Spotify did hand out the data it had when requested by an individual, it said the company had not been sufficiently specific as to how that data was being used.

“Since the information provided by Spotify has been unclear, it has been difficult for individuals to understand how their personal data is processed and to check whether the processing of their personal data is lawful,” IMY said.

It added that the “shortcomings discovered are considered, overall, to be of low severity,” motivating the size of the fine by Spotify’s user count and revenue.

The streaming giant, which is listed on the New York stock exchange, announced in April it had passed 500 million monthly active users with 210 million paying subscribers.

Spotify rejected the IMY findings, saying in a statement emailed to AFP that it “offers all users comprehensive information about how personal data is processed”.

IMY “found only minor areas of our process they believe need improvement. However, we don’t agree with the decision and plan to file an appeal,” Spotify said.

Privacy activist group Noyb said in a separate statement that the fine followed a complaint and subsequent litigation from the group, and while they welcomed the decision they lamented the tardiness of the authorities.

“The case took more than four years and we had to litigate the IMY to get a decision. The Swedish authority definitely has to speed up its procedures,” Stefano Rossetti, a privacy lawyer at Noyb, was quoted saying in the statement.

Intel to invest $25 billion in Israel factory in record deal, Netanyahu says

JERUSALEM, June 18 (Reuters) - U.S. chipmaker Intel Corp (INTC.O) will spend $25 billion on a new factory in Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, calling it the largest-ever international investment in the country.

The factory in Kiryat Gat is due to open in 2027, to operate through 2035 at least and to employ thousands of people, Israel's Finance Ministry said. Under the deal Intel will pay a 7.5% tax rate, up from the current 5%, the ministry added.

During its almost five decades of operations in Israel, Intel has grown to become the country's largest privately held employer and exporter and a leader of the local electronics and information industry, according to the company's website.

In 2017, Intel bought Israel-based Mobileye Global Inc (MBLY.O), which develops and deploys advanced driver-assistance systems, for $15 billion. Intel took Mobileye public last year.

Announcing the deal in televised remarks to his cabinet, Netanyahu called it "a tremendous achievement for the Israeli economy - 90 billion shekels ($25 billion) - the largest investment ever by an international company in Israel".

In a statement, Intel said its Israel operations had "played a crucial role" in the company's global success.

"Our intention to expand manufacturing capacity in Israel is driven by our commitment to meeting future manufacturing needs ... and we appreciate the continued support of the Israeli government," it said.

LG Advances Traffic Safety Solutions for the Road Based on V2X Technology

LG Advances Traffic Safety Solutions for the Road Based on V2X Technology

LG Electronics (LG) is accelerating the advancement of traffic safety solutions that utilize vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. V2X enables vehicles to communicate with one another and surrounding infrastructure and will play a major role in the upcoming era of autonomous driving.

In conjunction with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, LG recently completed the deployment of an advanced accident prevention system and verified its service effectiveness and usefulness in school zone areas in Seoul, Korea through the ‘Seoul Smart ITS 2.0 Deployment Project.’ The project featured the deployment of the company’s in-house-developed 5G Network-based V2X system, ‘Soft V2X.’

Soft V2X is a cloud-based service that collects and analyzes a range of data, including location, direction and speed of pedestrians and vehicles. This data is then used to inform drivers and vulnerable road users of potential traffic safety risks in real time. The solution can also communicate nearby road conditions and traffic signals by linking with smart Roadside Unit (RSU) equipped with an AI camera. Easy to use, the Soft V2X app can be installed via smartphone application* and easily be integrated into various connected mobility devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters, motorbikes as well as in-vehicle infotainment or telematics systems.

The recent demonstration was conducted in school zone areas encompassing two elementary schools and a kindergarten in Gangseo-gu – a suburb in western Seoul – and involved a total of 6,700 participants. Over a six-month period, Soft V2X sent over 40,000 traffic hazard notifications to pedestrians and vehicles, with 74.8 percent of pedestrians and 68.4 percent of drivers and vulnerable road users taking proper actions to avoid potential accidents, such as reducing their velocity or changing moving direction.

The project provided confirmation that Soft V2X, in conjunction with Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure, can reliably deliver a variety of traffic safety information and services. LG’s solution also proved effective at raising users’ awareness of traffic safety, helping to minimize potential collision accident risks and encouraging people to exercise appropriate caution in real traffic environments.

With the 26th 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) Meeting held in Seoul on May 11, LG took the opportunity to invite 70 global automakers and industry experts to participate in the demonstration and experience Soft V2X for themselves. Those who joined in had high praise for LG’s solution, noting the effectiveness of its real-time notifications in positively modifying behavior to keep people safe.

Going forward, LG will further enhance the usability of Soft V2X and refine the services it provides based on feedback from the project’s participants. During a trial event at the upcoming 5GAA meeting in Detroit, USA, this October, the company will introduce a more advanced Soft V2X solution that can offer services tailored to the specific needs and demands of different markets.

The company expects there will be a strong interest in Soft V2X given the recent surge of interest in pedestrian safety, government-led discussions on the establishment of next-generation Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and other vertical industries.

“We will secure technology leadership in cloud-based connected mobility platform for vehicle and pedestrian safety through continuous research and development,” said Je Yeong-ho, head of C&M Standard Lab. at LG Electronics.
