Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to develop 12 polo grounds in Chitral

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to develop 12 polo grounds in Chitral

ISLAMABAD, Jul 15 (APP): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a Rs2 billion tourism and cultural heritage project for the development and maintenance of 12 polo grounds in Upper and Lower Chitral, including the historic Shandur Polo Ground.

According to an official document available with Wealth Pakistan, the project has been designed to preserve and promote polo as one of the most important cultural and heritage traditions of Chitral. The scheme also aims to strengthen sports-based tourism and create income opportunities for local communities.

The Shandur Polo Festival is one of the key tourism events of the region. It is organised at Shandur Top in coordination with Chitral Scouts, the district administration, the police, and the Gilgit-Baltistan government.

The festival generates millions of rupees for the communities of Upper and Lower Chitral through tourism-related activities, including transport, accommodation, food services, temporary stalls, and local trade.

Chitral’s polo culture is deeply connected with the region’s identity. Unlike formal club polo, the traditional version played in Chitral is faster, more physical, and closely linked with local festivals and community gatherings.
The document also lists several promotional festivals for the region, including the Shandur Polo Festival, the Pre-Shandur Polo Tournament, the Qaqhlasht Festival, the Broghil Festival, the Khut Festival, the Chilam Joshi Festival, the Uchal Summer Festival and the Choimus Winter Festival.

The polo grounds project is the largest individual tourism-related scheme mentioned in the document for Chitral. Other projects include tourist rest areas, picnic spots, camping pod villages, and road schemes.

The development of 12 polo grounds could help Chitral turn its traditional sport into a stronger tourism product, benefiting local players, transporters, hoteliers, shopkeepers and small businesses.

Besides the polo grounds project, the document outlines several other tourism development initiatives for Chitral. These include the establishment of a Tourist Facilitation and Rest Area at Booni in Upper Chitral, development of tourist picnic spots at Garam Chashma in Lower Chitral and Sorlaspur in Upper Chitral, as well as camping pod villages at Bumburait, Sorlaspur and Yarkhun Lasht to improve visitor facilities and encourage tourism.

The document also includes road infrastructure projects, including the construction of a 17.1-kilometre road at a cost of Rs1.783 billion, while the Ayun-Bumburait and Zainey Pass roads have been recommended for inclusion in upcoming Annual Development Programme (ADP) schemes. In addition, a Rs300 million “Mezban” (Host) Tourism Programme has been initiated in Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Mansehra to support home-stay facilities through interest-free loans ranging from Rs1 million to Rs3 million.

Community Mourns Sudden Death of Youth Following Wasp Sting

Health Experts Warn of Rare but Fatal Allergic Reactions to Wasp Stings

CHITRAL: A young man, identified as Sadiq Ullah, reportedly died on Sunday morning after being stung by a wasp in what is believed to have been a severe allergic reaction, leaving his family and community in shock.

According to relatives, Sadiq Ullah was known for his kind nature and was in good health before the incident. Although the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, medical information suggests that a wasp sting can, in rare cases, trigger anaphylaxis—a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause swelling of the throat, breathing difficulties, and a sudden drop in blood pressure.

Health experts say anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment, usually with an epinephrine injection. Without prompt medical care, the condition can become fatal within minutes. The tragic incident has also raised public awareness about the importance of recognizing severe allergic reactions and seeking urgent medical assistance following insect stings.

With more than $4.5B IT Exports in FY26, Pakistan’s Digital Economy Expands Beyond US

With more than $4.5B IT Exports in FY26, Pakistan’s Digital Economy Expands Beyond US

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s digital export economy is entering a more mature and strategically diversified phase, driven by record-breaking growth, as the country exported approximately $4.5 billion worth of IT products in fiscal year 2025-26.

Moving beyond a traditional reliance on the US and European markets, Pakistani SMBs are actively expanding into the key Asia-Pacific (APAC) hubs like Japan and Singapore. This strategic expansion is yielding unprecedented results.

Payoneer.jpeg

The data compiled by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) confirms that the IT sector has maintained uninterrupted growth throughout 2025-26, compared with $3.475bn in the corresponding period last year. In addition to the usual software development services, high-growth sectors — including Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and gaming — are scaling rapidly on the global stage. This growth is backed by Pakistan's young, cost-competitive, and highly skilled workforce, which continues to serve international clients at scale.

“This strong momentum reflects sustained global demand for Pakistan’s digital services and highlights a growing industry focus on building resilient, multi-market revenue streams,” said Nagesh Devata SVP and Head of APAC at Payoneer.

However, global expansion also brings increased operational complexity. Expanding into the Asia-Pacific region requires adapting to distinct local payment ecosystems. To transform these cross-border logistical challenges into scalable growth opportunities, robust financial infrastructure is critical.

Payoneer, the financial technology company empowering the world’s SMBs to transact globally, is reinforcing its commitment to Pakistani exporters during this pivotal transition. It provides local businesses with vital multi-currency capabilities to seamlessly receive and manage payments across major global currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, and SGD.

Severe Floods Cut Off Broghil Valley After Bridge Collapse

Heavy Rains Trigger Devastating Floods in Upper Chitral, Destroy Key Bridge

Heavy rains triggered a devastating flash flood in **Bang Gol, Upper Chitral**, washing away the only bridge connecting **Broghil Valley** to the **Yarkhun Road**. The destruction has completely cut off road access to the remote valley, disrupting transportation and emergency response efforts.

The flood also damaged large areas of agricultural land, forests, orchards, and several houses, causing significant financial losses. Residents are facing severe difficulties as movement in and out of the area has come to a halt.

Local residents have appealed to the government and district authorities to provide an alternative route, launch emergency relief operations, rehabilitate affected families, and conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage. No casualties have been confirmed so far, while authorities continue to evaluate the extent of the losses.

Security remains a drag on business confidence, says OICCI Security Survey 2026

Security remains a drag on business confidence, says OICCI Security Survey 2026

KARACHIThe Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) on Tuesday released its Security Survey 2026, cautioning that deterioration in Karachi and continued security challenges in the country's western regions are weighing on investor confidence and business operations despite improvements in parts of Pakistan.

The annual OICCI Security Survey 2026, conducted in June amongst the leading foreign investors operating across Pakistan, found that the top leadership of 71 per cent of member respondent companies ranked security among their top three business concerns, highlighting that law and order remains a major impediment to investment and economic activity.

The survey shows that security perceptions in Karachi deteriorated compared to last year, with the proportion of respondents reporting a worsening security environment rising to 42pc from 41pc in 2025. Meanwhile, 81pc of respondents in Quetta and 86pc in the rest of Balochistan continued to report a deteriorating security environment. Street crimes remained the foremost concern for businesses, with 50pc respondents reporting an increase in street crimes trend in Karachi, up from 45pc last year. The same has been observed in Quetta where the street crimes trends have increased to 37pc compared to 24pc in 2025. Meanwhile, 32pc of respondents said security conditions affecting their own businesses had deteriorated, up from 28pc last year, while concerns over employees’ personal security concerns during daily commutes also worsened in Karachi (45pc versus 41pc in 2025) and Quetta (83pc versus 79pc).

OICCI logo.jpg

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Secretary General OICCI M. Abdul Aleem said: “The survey demonstrates the resilience and long-term commitment of foreign investors to Pakistan. However, sustaining investment momentum requires consistent improvements in public safety and law enforcement. Security should be viewed not merely as a law and order issue, but as a critical economic enabler. Reducing street crime, strengthening policing and ensuring a secure operating environment will directly enhance Pakistan's competitiveness as an investment destination.”

Respondents also reported a decline in their assessment of civilian law enforcement, with positive ratings for Karachi Police falling to 30pc from 38pc last year and Sindh Police to 16pc from 26pc. By contrast, Sindh Rangers and KP Police recorded improved ratings, increasing to 43pc from 34pc and 40pc from 34pc, respectively. Businesses continued to identify street crime, illegal gratification, expatriate security and protests as the principal law and order issues affecting business confidence.

The survey also found that regional geopolitical developments have added to the security burden. Eighty-eight per cent of respondents said the Middle East conflict had affected their organisations’ security environment, with supply chain and logistics security (83pc), reduced business activity (69pc) and employee safety (38pc) emerging as the most significant concerns.

Despite these challenges, foreign investors have largely maintained their engagement with Pakistan, with 87pc of OICCI member companies remaining confident of holding board and management meetings within the country, signalling confidence in Pakistan's long-term economic potential.

OICCI urged the government to sustain targeted security interventions, strengthen policing capacity and accelerate institutional reforms to provide businesses with a more predictable and secure operating environment, noting that improved security is essential to attracting new investment and supporting sustainable economic growth.
