Qist Bazaar Raises $3.2 Million in Series A Funding, Led by Indus Valley Capital

Qist Bazaar Raises $3.2 Million in Series A Funding, Led by Indus Valley Capital

Qist Bazaar, Pakistan's leading Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) fintech platform, has successfully raised $3.2 million in its Series A funding round, led by Indus Valley Capital. The round also saw participation from Gobi Partners, a prominent Asia-focused venture capital firm managing assets worth $1.6 billion. Bank Alfalah, one of Pakistan's largest commercial banks, which led Qist Bazaar's seed round, has also continued its support, making this the first time an international venture capital firm has joined forces with a major Pakistani bank to take an equity stake in a BNPL fintech.

Qist Bazaar, licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) as a Non-bank Financial Company (NBFC), is dedicated to providing installment-based payment solutions for Pakistan's unbanked and underbanked populations. In just three years, the company has disbursed over 55,000 product-based loans, totaling $12 million, enabling consumers across Pakistan to afford essential items like mobile phones and home appliances through affordable monthly payments.

The company's inclusive approach sets it apart, as it caters to a diverse range of customers, from those with no formal financial history to those with established banking relationships. Qist Bazaar's simple eligibility criterion—"Every Pakistani"—has empowered underserved groups such as domestic workers, rickshaw drivers, students, and micro-entrepreneurs by providing them access to much-needed financing. The fintech's hybrid scoring model, which combines traditional and alternative credit assessments, further enhances accessibility for unbanked consumers.

Arif Lakhani, Co-founder and CEO of Qist Bazaar, expressed his commitment to addressing fundamental needs:
"At Qist Bazaar, we are dedicated to bringing essential goods within the financial reach of Pakistanis. Items like home appliances and mobile phones are necessities, not luxuries, yet many struggle to afford them. With the support of our investors, we are making these necessities accessible through flexible payment plans."

Qist Bazaar's strong partnership with Bank Alfalah, which led the company's seed round, continues to yield dividends. The collaboration is expected to provide Qist Bazaar with significant debt financing from top financial institutions, enhancing the company's ability to serve customers who have limited or no access to formal credit.

Indus Valley Capital, the lead investor for the Series A round, is a key backer of several successful Pakistani startups, including Bazaar, Maqsad, BridgeLinx, and Farmdar.
Aatif Awan, Founder and Managing Partner at Indus Valley Capital, highlighted Qist Bazaar's transformative potential:
"We see enormous potential in Qist Bazaar's ability to reshape consumer financing in Pakistan, akin to what Bajaj Finance has achieved in India. What excites us most is not just the market opportunity but the tangible impact Qist Bazaar can have on the daily lives of millions of Pakistanis."

Unlike many high-growth fintech startups, Qist Bazaar has maintained a positive EBITDA since its inception, reflecting its strong unit economics and focus on sustainable growth. This disciplined approach, coupled with a growing customer base and a low delinquency rate, positions Qist Bazaar as a leader in Pakistan's BNPL sector.

Naiel Ikram, General Partner at Gobi Partners, praised the fintech's use of technology to drive operational efficiency and growth:
"Qist Bazaar's innovative use of technology to streamline operations while enabling rapid, sustainable growth stood out to us. The founders' deep expertise in the BNPL space, combined with their understanding of customer behavior, mirrors some of the most successful founders we've backed across Asia. With a clear path to scale by serving underserved users, Qist Bazaar is poised to replicate the success stories we've witnessed across the region."

With the fresh infusion of capital from the Series A round, Qist Bazaar plans to accelerate its growth by expanding its product offerings, enhancing its technology infrastructure, and scaling operations across Pakistan. The company is set to establish a presence in key cities like Islamabad, Sukkur, Faisalabad, and Multan while bolstering its operations in Karachi and Lahore. Additionally, new product categories, such as solar power generators for small households, are in the pipeline.

To extend its reach, Qist Bazaar has also launched a dealer network across various product categories, allowing partners to market its installment-based payment plans. Furthermore, the company has initiated B2B2C efforts, securing partnerships with major players in the textile sector.

Bayer Pakistan and AMAN Collaborate on World Contraception Day

Bayer Pakistan and AMAN Collaborate on World Contraception Day

On the occasion of World Contraception Day 2024, Bayer Pakistan and the Association for Mothers & Newborns (AMAN) committed to a collaboration utilizing their combined expertise and knowledge to increase awareness about modern contraceptive methods and their safe use, for the benefit of the general population of Pakistan.

An MoU signing ceremony was held between both parties, followed by the first of multiple planned scientific sessions for doctors to be held across the country, to create awareness on how modern contraceptive methods can contribute to women's wellness and child health.

Celebrated globally and supported by a coalition of international organizations including Bayer, World Contraception Day (WCD) focuses on the crucial role of informed decision-making in reducing unintended pregnancies, in a world where many women have limited control on their reproductive health.

This is especially relevant for Pakistan, where among women aged 15 to 49, approximately 19 million express a desire to avoid unintended pregnancy. However, of these, 50% (9.5 million women) do not have access to modern contraceptives.1

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a leading reproductive health research organization, approximately 3.7 million unintended pregnancies occur annually in Pakistan, with 61% (2.2 million) resulting in induced abortions.1

Unintended pregnancies take a serious toll on women's health, often leading to unsafe medical procedures, as well as exacerbating economic challenges for families. Increasing access to modern contraceptives is therefore critical in mitigating both issues.

Speaking on the occasion, Khurram Mirza, Country Commercial Lead, Pharmaceutical Division, Bayer Pakistan, said, "Our WCD collaboration with AMAN is well-aligned with Bayer's global mission, Health for All, Hunger for None, as well as the company's focus on women's healthcare. Women's health is in Bayer's DNA; as a global leader in the segment, Bayer offers a wide range of contraceptive options, as well as therapies for menopause management and gynecological diseases. Additionally, Bayer intends to provide 100 million women in low-and-middle income countries with access to family planning by 2030, by funding capacity building programs and ensuring the supply of affordable modern contraceptives."

Prof. Dr. Sadiah Ahsan Pal, Vice President AMAN, commented, ""Family planning is Pakistan's number one health priority. The progress of our nation depends on it. Not forced but by choice. Every doctor, nurse, LHV, LHW or midwife who is delivering a healthy baby holds the key to future health of that family. That family is eternally grateful and looks up to them for advice. We should counsel them properly about family planning, making informed choices to prevent unplanned pregnancy. If we do this right, we will be making a huge contribution towards the healthy progress of our nation."

Both Bayer Pakistan and AMAN are optimistic that this series of symposiums will catalyze a wider conversation in the healthcare community and beyond about the urgent need for increasing access to modern contraceptive methods, benefiting women and families across Pakistan.

Delhi CM Atishi Announces Minimum Wage Hike, Citing AAP’s Pro-Poor Policies

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi announced a significant increase in the minimum wages for various worker categories in the national capital. Unskilled workers will now earn ₹18,066 per month, semi-skilled workers ₹19,929, and skilled workers ₹21,917 per month. Atishi attributed this achievement to the AAP government under the leadership of former CM Arvind Kejriwal, emphasizing that Delhi now has the highest minimum wages in the country.

Atishi criticized the BJP, accusing it of being "anti-poor" and claiming that wages in BJP-ruled states are "half of what is being paid in Delhi." Despite what she called BJP's efforts to obstruct progress, Atishi pointed out that the Kejriwal government successfully revised wages twice a year, ensuring better earnings for workers in the capital.

The announcement followed a meeting between Atishi, cabinet ministers, and department heads, where she urged officials to work collaboratively in the interest of Delhi's people. She emphasized that the government is fully committed to supporting the officials and fulfilling its responsibility to provide the best services for the city's residents, emphasizing accountability and integrity in governance.

Aga Khan University Hospital Reaccredited by Joint Commission International, Reinforcing Commitment to Global Standards in Quality and Patient Care

Aga Khan University Hospital Reaccredited by Joint Commission International, Reinforcing Commitment to Global Standards in Quality and Patient Care

Karachi: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has once again been reaccredited by The Joint Commission International (JCI), a recognition that reaffirms its longstanding commitment to excellence in healthcare. This prestigious reaccreditation continues a legacy of quality and safety that began with AKUH's first accreditation in 2006, when it became the first JCI-accredited hospital in Pakistan.

JCI, an independent, not-for-profit organisation, is globally recognised as the gold seal of approval in healthcare. AKUH's unbroken chain of JCI reaccreditations underscores its adherence to world-class standards in patient safety, quality care, and performance.

AKUH and its Outreach Health Network have consistently raised the bar, not just meeting but exceeding the rigorous standards set by JCI. In 2015, AKUH, Karachi, became the first and only academic medical centre in Pakistan to receive JCI accreditation.

"The reaccreditation by JCI reaffirms our commitment to excellence in healthcare," said Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President and Vice Chancellor of the Aga Khan University. "At the Aga Khan University Hospital, we strive to provide care that meets and exceeds international standards, ensuring the safety and well-being of our patients. We are proud to continue this journey of excellence, and we remain dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare in Pakistan and beyond."

The JCI reaccreditation process, conducted every three years, involves a comprehensive audit of critical hospital operations, including infection prevention and control, quality improvement, patient safety, and staff qualifications. AKUH's success in this rigorous process emphasises its dedication to delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to every patient.

Dr Farhat Abbas, CEO, AKU Health Services, Pakistan, added, "Achieving JCI reaccreditation is a testament to our team's relentless dedication. This accolade not only recognises our commitment to the highest standards of patient care but also highlights our ongoing efforts to enhance and innovate in healthcare delivery. We are honoured to be at the forefront of excellence in healthcare in Pakistan."

With the JCI gold seal, patients can trust that AKUH upholds the highest global standards of quality and care, which lead to better treatment outcomes. They can trust that the Hospital puts heavy focus and commitment to patient safety and has put in rigorous protocols to prevent infections, errors, and actions that can risk harm to patients. They can rely on delivery of service that is guided by commitment to continuous monitoring and improvement, ensuring that the care they receive is always aligned to the latest research-backed guidelines and practices. This accreditation serves as a reassurance to all patients, both locally and internationally, that AKUH offers world-class healthcare they can trust.

Under the leadership of Mr. Isphanyar Bhandara, MNA, the historic beverages company has commenced the production of 120 kV solar power at its factories in Rawalpindi.

During her visit to the factory, Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam inaugurated the solar power project alongside Mr. Bhandara, with officials from the environment department, staff members, and local community representatives in attendance.

In her remarks, Ms. Romina emphasized the significant costs Pakistan faces due to the adverse impacts of climate change on various socio-economic sectors, particularly agriculture, energy, and water. She underscored the necessity of collaboration with the industrial and private sectors to mitigate these negative effects.

"As the impacts of human-caused climate change become increasingly evident, the private sector in Pakistan has a vital role to play in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable business practices," she stated.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, she noted that businesses across various industries are beginning to understand their responsibility to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a greener future for Pakistan. She highlighted the critical role of private sector involvement in achieving carbon reduction goals, alongside broader economic and social benefits, in line with government green energy policies.

A senior representative from Murree Brewery informed the PM's coordinator that the solar energy project is expected to generate 166,440 units of electricity annually, which will help reduce 150 metric tons of carbon emissions each year and prevent the cutting down of approximately 7,000 trees annually.

Ms. Romina praised Murree Brewery's initiative, stating that it should serve as an inspiring model for other private sector businesses and industries across the country. She urged the private sector to take the lead in investing in renewable energy projects, including solar and wind farms, to foster cleaner energy production and decrease reliance on fossil fuels.

"Such green initiatives are economically, environmentally, and socially significant, and the government will support such efforts by the private sector," she emphasized.

She also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in promoting green energy projects, stating that collaboration is essential for effectively addressing climate change. Joint initiatives can enhance resource sharing, technology transfer, and capacity building.

Ms. Romina concluded by remarking that by promoting sustainable products and practices, businesses can influence consumer behavior, encouraging a shift towards low-carbon choices among the public. She reiterated that the commitment of the private sector to reduce carbon emissions is crucial for Pakistan to achieve its environmental sustainability and climate resilience goals.

"By embracing innovation, implementing sustainable practices, and collaborating with stakeholders, businesses can lead the way toward a greener, more resilient future," she asserted.
