China’s Sichuan Publishing Group gifts 200 sets of ‘King Gesar’ to Pakistan as token of historical bonds

Beijing, December 28, 2019: China’s Sichuan Publishing Group presented 200 sets of King Gesar, an epic story of the East, to Pakistan as a token of the deep-rooted historical cultural ties between the two countries at a ceremony held at Tsinghua University.

Pakistan Ambassador to China, Naghmana A. Hashmi, chief guest of the event said she would present the precious collection to the National Library of Pakistan.

Due to geographic proximity, the culture, language, lifestyle and architecture of people living in Baltistan of northern Pakistan are similar to those of the Tibet ethnic minority in China. King Gesar is a hero-worshiped by Tibetan, as well as the Baltistan people.

It is said that Baltistan has passed down the Gesar tradition from history, and some local villagers can still sing “King Gesar” in its full lyrics even now, China Economic Net reported.

Ambassador Hashmi said, “Even before it was built in early 1950s, Khunjerab Pass was a popular route for trade and exchanges of culture and religion between northern Pakistan and Xinjiang, China.” The people of Baltistan used to connect with the Tibetan through the Pass.

She continued, if you go to Baltistan, you could still see similar ethnic groups with Tibetan, and even (hear) similar dialect.

The Epic of King Gesar got published in more than 100 Tibetan versions in China, and the “Gesar epic tradition” was included in Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.

Preceding the ceremony, Ambassador Hashmi delivered a lecture titled “Pakistan: The land of Sufis, Mountains, Valleys, and Deserts”, in an endeavor to share the core spirit of Pakistan and its people. She provided deep analysis of the unique geographic presence of Pakistan explained the concept of Sufism that shape the characteristics of Pakistani and presented a comprehensive image of the magnificent landscape, as well as economic status quo of all the provinces of Pakistan.

Today Pakistan is a country in rejuvenation, rebirth, and a land full of hope,” the ambassador mentioned because excellent young people with knowledge and expertise are taking the tide, and especially, the backbone of the Pakistani characteristics “Sufism” that contains tolerance, love, understanding and humanism, is leading the nation forward.

We are not fundamentalists through history, and it is such a basic spirit of Pakistan that has made it the only country in the world to have fought the scourge of terrorism. The ambassador pinpointed.

To provide the audience with a more perceptual vision of Pakistan, Ambassador Hashmi displayed representative images of each province of Pakistan, from the magnificent mountains and glaciers to the breathtaking vast seas and azure blue lake, from the development of the primitive agriculture to the emerging industries… It can be said that everyone in the lecture was impressed by such inclusive and in-depth presentation of a country that no one would leave and say that Pakistan is not a beautiful place full of hope.

Regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, Ambassador Hashmi said, the first phase of CPEC has laid a solid foundation in terms of infrastructure and energy and the second phase would focus on economic zones and social welfare. She invited Chinese friends and international ones to relocate industries, set up joint-ventures or invests in Pakistan.

Hailing Belt and Road Initiative as a route of peace and connectivity, the ambassador advocated for the proper settlement of Afghanistan issue to maintain a peaceful environment for the west border of Pakistan, as well as peace and development for the region.

The event was hosted by Prof. Li Xiguang, Director of Pakistan Culture and Communication Center, and participated by scholars, teachers and students from different countries in Tsinghua University.

Huawei Remains Leader in GlobalData's 5G RAN Competitive Landscape Assessment

Huawei Remains Leader in GlobalData's 5G RAN Competitive Landscape Assessment

Huawei Remains Leader in GlobalData's 5G RAN Competitive Landscape Assessment

GlobalData, a world-renowned data analytics and consulting company for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, has published its latest analysis of 5G competitiveness in the second half of 2019. The report, 5G RAN: Competitive Landscape Assessment, evaluates the 5G radio access network (RAN) product portfolios of the world's leading equipment vendors. According to the assessment, Huawei gained the top position in H2 2019 and remained the clear leader across the entire 5G RAN portfolio.

The criteria categories employed in the 5G RAN competitive assessment include baseband unit (BBU) capacity, Radio Unit portfolio, installation ease, and technology evolution. The assessment concluded that Huawei's 5G RAN portfolio held the strongest overall leadership position, achieving a rating of Leader across all four evaluated criteria.

Huawei boasts the industry's most complete 5G Radio Unit product portfolio. A total of 94 Radio Unit products are supported, including 22 Massive MIMO models, 32 integrated antenna models, and 14 dual-band models (referring to these capable of operating on two bands). Huawei holds the top position in all four dimensions. In addition, Huawei's 5G RAN Radio Unit products support 35 NR bands, the industry's most powerful support capabilities, enabling operators to better serve their subscribers.

Huawei boasts the industry's most streamlined and flexible 5G RAN deployment. Apart from clear leadership across traditional installation criteria (such as product weight and dimensions), Huawei also delivers multiple novel solutions to ensure quick, simplified 5G deployments. One example is Super BladeSite, which solves 5G deployment challenges in cases where antenna space is extremely limited, while also reducing the dependence of site devices on equipment rooms and air conditioning facilities.

Huawei delivers the industry's most powerful BBU capabilities. Huawei's BBU products supports 36 cells with a bandwidth of 100 MHz on the sub-6 GHz and 36 cells with a bandwidth of 400 MHz on the mmWave band. Such high BBU capacity puts global operators in very strong position to deal with increasingly demanding traffic growth well into the future.

The assessment serves as both a guide for mobile operators when selecting 5G RAN suppliers and a tool for vendors to assess their own competitiveness over products and solutions .The assessment also examines trends and drivers of 5G RAN markets. The constantly increasing data speed demanded by mobile users is a major driver for telecom operators to improve service experiences and avoid user churn. The extraordinary network capabilities of 5G will become an essential foundation for promoting digital transformation across vertical industries, which will in return drive the further commercial adoption of 5G networks. Fixed wireless broadband in homes and enterprises will also become typical use cases as we advance further into the 5G era.

Kifalat programme under the Ehsaas initiative to empower poor segments of society: Sania Nishtar

ISLAMABAD (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan's special assistant on social protection and poverty alleviation, Dr Sania Nishtar, said Sunday the Kifalat Programme — under the Ehsaas initiative umbrella — would be launched in 15 districts within a few weeks to empower the society's poor segments.

Speaking to APP in an interview, she said an additional amount of Rs8.6 billion would be spent on the Kifalat Programme, which would be expanded to 34 districts in March and more till 2020.

Dr Nishtar noted that a socioeconomic survey of 216 villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir was completed under Kifalat Programme to include all women who had their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) without any condition. These women frequently suffered from economic losses as a result of India's ceasefire violations in the list of beneficiaries, she said.

The special assistant said another milestone would be the launching of a shock-oriented precision safety net, called "Tahafaz," by next month — also under the Ehsaas initiative umbrella — for the vulnerable to protect them against shocks.

The "Tahafaz" initiative included provision of one-time financial assistance for the protection of deserving folks against catastrophic events, assistance to poor widows who do not have any other earning family members, and legal aid.

A partnership with NGOs to upscale successful programmes for orphans, street children, seasonal migrants, transgender people, victims of child and bonded labour, and daily wage workers would also be components of this initiative, she said.

Dr Nishtar mentioned that efforts were being carried out to bring transparency in each and every programme as per the PM's vision.

Details of 14,730 government employees of the total 820,165 undeserving beneficiaries of Benazir Income Support programme (BISP) identified in a recent move to make the programme transparent would be sent to relevant departments for further legal action. The number of beneficiaries was now reduced to 4.27 million, she said.

In response to a question, she said a majority of the cases (33 percent) of undeserving beneficiaries were found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 29.67 percent in Punjab, 22.32 percent in Sindh, 5.52 percent in Balochistan, 2.12 percent in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and only one percent and 0.2 percent in Gilgit Baltistan and Islamabad, respectively.

Dr Nishtar said the Ehsaas Programme's digital payment mechanism with biometric verification was in place for the BISP beneficiaries, helping reduce the chances of identity theft and fraudulent withdrawals.

She also said the government planned to launch the 'Ehsaas App' in January to educate common people as well as the beneficiaries about the schemes and facilities being provided under this pro-poor initiative.

It was for the first time in history that the government was introducing a unique scholarship programme for the poor children, which could be availed by students unable to meet the merit criteria but were deserving, she said, adding that the purpose behind launching the Ehsaas Programme was to empower poor citizens and address their issues.

"We are also in efforts to create close liaison with all the ministries to hold joint efforts to smooth the outreach of facilities through simplifying procedures for the labourers, overseas Pakistanis, teachers etc belonging to the poor sections of society," she said.

Dr Nishtar said the present government was also providing incentives to the private sector so that it can work for the welfare of poor segments. She informed that her division in collaboration with a private organisation is in process to ensure poor children access to the free online content created for educational purposes.

Facebook blocks Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's live streaming: Report

Facebook blocks Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's live streaming: Report

Facebook blocks Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's live streaming: Report

Facebook has blocked live streaming of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's (PBC) news bulletins for highlighting “Indian atrocities in Kashmir”, Radio Pakistan said Monday.

The news coverage exposing “continued atrocities, curfew and military lockdown in IoK” led to the blockage, the statement said.

Screenshots from back in May and July shared on the Radio Pakistan website showed a warning message from Facebook, saying that "your post goes against our Community Standards on dangerous individuals and organisations."

The screenshots are an indication that Facebook has a history of censoring Radio Pakistan's content — a practise it may have repeated on the broadcast of its live streaming content.

The warning, as per the screenshots shared, was given on posts that showed the picture of Kashmiri freedom fighter Burhan Muzaffar Wani and, in another instance, mentioned a "mujahid commander Zakir Musa" in the lead-in text.

However, Radio Pakistan, which is a part of the PBC, said today that it has made "alternate arrangements on YouTube for live streaming for its viewers."

It is pertinent to mention that Radio Pakistan has been "highlighting the voice of the people of Occupied Kashmir, and exposing Indian brutalities and gross human rights violations at every platform including social media".

Facebook and Twitter had earlier suspended hundreds of individuals' accounts and removed multiple pro-Kashmir posts from Pakistan, reportedly under pressure from India.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had approached both the organisations and lodged complaints against their actions.

The PTA has also established a helpline for users if they face suspension of accounts.

Facebook has blocked live streaming of the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation's (PBC) news bulletins for highlighting Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir, Radio Pakistan reported on Monday.

However, temporary arrangements have been made to continue live streaming of Radio Pakistan's bulletins on YouTube, the report added.

In its report, Radio Pakistan has included screenshots of earlier warning messages received from the social-media giant, dating back to May, warning the public broadcaster of violating "community standards on dangerous individuals and organisations".

Specifically, these posts were from news stories about the death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani in July and the curfew imposed after the death of Zakir Musa, also a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, in May.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Monday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan stated that Pakistan has to move away from international [social media] platforms in order to become more self-reliant.

Talking about Kashmir, she said: “As we have seen, every time we try to highlight human rights violations on social media platforms, such as Facebook, the accounts are suspended”.

Boeing fired its CEO Dennis Muilenburg - as the company continues to battle fallout from its 737 Max crisis

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg has been fired effective immediately, the company's board of directors announced Monday, as the plane maker continues to battle the fallout from two 737 Max crisis that left its best-selling plane in crisis.

Muilenburg will be replaced by David L. Calhoun, Boeing's chairman, on January 13, according to the news release.

The aviation giant has this year been gripped by a huge crisis over its handling of two crashes involving the 737 Max plane. The two crashes, in October 2018 and March 2019, killed a total of 346 people. At the time, Muilenburg said the company expected the plane to return to service within six weeks.

"The Board of Directors decided that a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the Company moving forward as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders," the news release said.

The statement did not explicitly mention the 737 Max crisis beyond Calhoun saying he believes in "the future of Boeing and the 737 Max."

There's still no set return date for the plane, as in-progress planes sit idle near Boeing's factories. Airlines continue to push back their estimated dates of service, with United Airlines now estimating a June return.

"Under the Company's new leadership, Boeing will operate with a renewed commitment to full transparency, including effective and proactive communication with the FAA, other global regulators and its customers," the statement said. "Dave has deep industry experience and a proven track record of strong leadership, and he recognizes the challenges we must confront."
