Trump is disqualified from Illinois ballot, judge rules

(Reuters) -An Illinois state judge on Wednesday barred Donald Trump from appearing on the Illinois' Republican presidential primary ballot because of his role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but she delayed her ruling from taking effect in light of an expected appeal by the former U.S. president.

Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter sided with Illinois voters who argued that the former president should be disqualified from the state's March 19 primary ballot and its Nov. 5 general election ballot for violating the anti-insurrection clause of the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment.

The final outcome of the Illinois case and similar challenges will likely be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard arguments related to Trump's ballot eligibility on Feb. 8.

Porter said she was staying her decision because she expected his appeal to Illinois' appellate courts, and a potential ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court.

The advocacy group Free Speech For People, which spearheaded the Illinois disqualification effort, praised the ruling as a "historic victory" in a statement.

A campaign spokesperson for Trump, the national frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination, said in a statement this "is an unconstitutional ruling that we will quickly appeal."

Colorado and Maine earlier removed Trump from their state ballots after determining he is disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Both decisions are on hold while Trump appeals.

Section 3 bars from public office anyone who took an oath to support the U.S. Constitution and then has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

Trump supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, attacked police and swarmed the Capitol in a bid to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 election victory. Trump gave an incendiary speech to supporters beforehand, telling them to go to the Capitol and "fight like hell." He then for hours did not act on requests that he urge the mob to stop.

The Supreme Court is currently weighing Trump's challenge to his Colorado disqualification. The justices in Washington appeared skeptical of the decision during oral arguments in the case, expressing concerns about states taking sweeping actions that could affect the national election.

Engro Corp revenues show robust growth of 35% in 2023

Engro Corp revenues show robust growth of 35% in 2023

Engro Corp revenues show robust growth of 35% in 2023

Karachi: On a consolidated basis, Engro Corporation’s revenue grew by 35% to PKR 482 billion in 2023, while consolidated PAT before accounting impact due to remeasurement of thermal energy assets increased to PKR 66 billion versus PKR 46 billion last year, recording an EPS of PKR 63.01.

Major variance is attributable to higher urea sales, efficient plant operations, higher earnings from dollar-denominated businesses, and efficiencies derived through cost optimization.

However, after incorporating the accounting impact due to remeasurement of thermal energy assets, the consolidated PAT stood at PKR 36 billion with an EPS of PKR 38.60 in 2023.

Engro Corporation announced a final cash dividend of PKR 2/- per share for the year. This is in addition to the PKR 46/- per share dividend announced during the year, bringing the cumulative payout to PKR 48/- per share.

Proposed Divestment of Thermal Energy Assets

Referring to the various disclosures made at PSX by the Company regarding the ongoing discussions with Liberty Mills Limited along with other parties acting in concert, the Company is now evaluating to execute the proposed divestment of the Company’s thermal energy assets comprising of shareholding in Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited, Engro Powergen Thar (Pvt.) Limited and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company Limited held via Engro Energy Limited through a sale of shares process.

SECP vide SRO 986 (I)/2019 dated September 2, 2019, has granted specific exemptions to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) from the applicability of IFRS 9, IFRS 16 and IAS 21. As a result of this, debt component recovered from CPPA-G as part of tariff approved by NEPRA is recorded as revenue in the profit or loss statement over the life of the loan. However, the corresponding depreciation expense related to the IPP is recorded over the term of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The term of the loan being shorter than the term of the PPA results in higher Net Assets in the Consolidated Financial Statements of the Group.

In accordance with the requirements of IAS 36, the Company has carried out an assessment of the recoverable amount the thermal energy assets for the purpose of Standalone and Consolidated Financial Statements.

Due to the specific accounting treatment for IPPs, as mentioned above, the Net Assets of thermal energy assets in the Consolidated Financial Statements of the Group are higher than their recoverable amounts. Accordingly, an accounting impact of PKR 30 billion (Owners’ Share: PKR 13 billion) has been recognized in the Consolidated Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2023.

In case of Standalone Financial Statements of the Company for the year ended December 31, 2023, no impact has been recognized as the recoverable amount of thermal energy assets is significantly higher than their carrying amount.

Portfolio Performance

The Fertilizer business achieved a historic milestone of highest ever urea sales of 2,327 KT through record urea production, cost optimization, and long-term reliability projects executed during 2022.  The business enabled import substitution to the tune of USD 0.8 billion in 2023.

Despite macro-economic headwinds, Engro Polymer and Chemicals Limited was able to sustain an 89 percent market share by ensuring product availability and implementing various incentives to boost market confidence. The business recorded domestic sales of 199 KT, thus, enabling import substitution of USD 91 million. As a mitigant to lower domestic demand, business focused on export opportunities and achieved the highest ever export volumes of 44 KT, including caustic soda exports of 22 KT, generating foreign exchange of USD 26 million for the period.

Engro Enfrashare (Pvt.) Limited continued to expand its national tower footprint and achieved a scale of 3,952 tower sites with a 1.21x tenancy ratio during 2023 versus 3,329 tower sites with 1.17x tenancy ratio in 2022, catering to all four major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) of Pakistan.

In the Energy vertical, the Mining business is committed to initiate Phase III of the expansion to enhance capacity to 11.4 MTPA. Engro Powergen Thar (Pvt.) Limited achieved 82% availability during the year, while Qadirpur Power Plant achieved 100% availability through ensuring efficient plant operations and dispatched a Net Electrical Output of 870 GWH to the national grid.

Engro Elengy Terminal (Pvt) Limited handled 73 vessels during 2023, delivering 215 bcf re-gasified LNG into the SSGC network with an availability factor of 97.1%. The Terminal contributed 13% - 15% towards Pakistan’s total gas supply during the year. Engro Vopak Terminal’s chemical throughput was adversely influenced due to disruption in the operations of key customers, however, a notable 64% increase in LPG marine imports was recorded compared to last year.

FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited maintained its growth momentum, achieving a record-breaking topline of PKR 100 billion, marking a remarkable 36% increase compared to last year.

Engro Eximp FZE, the Company’s international trading arm that initiated commercial activity in UAE in 2022, achieved a turnover of approximately USD 400 million including third party contracts.

Maulana Qadri expressed the resolve of his organisation to continue with its humanitarian service for endless times to come.

He informed the audience that volunteers and rescuers belonging to Saylani Trust had reached Turkiye within the next 48 hours n after the deadly earthquake in the country on February 8 last year. He told the audience that emergency assistance in the form of food rations was being provided to the oppressed people in Gaza. He said the Pakistan Air Force had offered to his non-profit the provision of speedy air logistical support for dispatching relief consignment to people in Gaza.

Alarming Number of Out-of-School Children Revealed in Pakistan Education Statistics

A recent analysis of Pakistan's education statistics for the academic year 2021-22 has unveiled a staggering revelation regarding the number of Out-of-School Children (OOSC), which has reached an alarming proportion of 26.20 million.

Released today in a preliminary teaser, the findings underscore the critical state of education accessibility in the country. The breakdown by provinces reveals the following numbers of out-of-school children: Punjab (11.73 million), Sindh (7.63 million), KPK (3.63 million), Balochistan (3.13 million), and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) with 0.08 million out-of-school students.

Furthermore, 39% of children in the school-going age group are currently out of school, indicating a persistent challenge in ensuring universal education. Balochistan stands out with the highest percentage, where a staggering 65% of children are out of school, while ICT reports the lowest percentage. In comparison among the major provinces, KPK fares better with a 30% out-of-school rate. Despite a decrease in the percentage of out-of-school children from 44% in 2016-17 to 39% in 2021-22, the absolute number has surged from 22.02 million to 26.21 million during the same period. This increase is primarily attributed to the population growth rate outpacing the decrease in out-of-school children.

At the higher secondary level, a disconcerting 60% of children are out of school in 2021-22. Further analysis reveals 44%, 30%, and 36% out-of-school rates at high, middle, and primary levels respectively.

A substantial portion of the out-of-school children, totaling 10.77 million, is at the primary level, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions. Economic disparities play a significant role in educational access, with children from the poorest quintile facing the highest disadvantage, evident across all education levels.

Detailed insights into economic disparities and additional statistics will be unveiled during a comprehensive release scheduled for Monday in PIE Islamabad.

Engro Fertilizers welcomes gas tariff revision as a step in the right direction

Engro Fertilizers welcomes gas tariff revision as a step in the right direction

Engro Fertilizers welcomes gas tariff revision as a step in the right direction

Karachi: Engro Fertilizers welcomes the fact that the government has taken a bold first step by removing the subsidy for fertilizer manufacturers that get their gas from the SNGPL network, which represents 60% of all fertilizer manufacturing capacity.

They have done that by increasing the feed stock prices from PKR 580/mmbtu to PKR 1,597/mmbtu, almost a 300% increase in the cost of producing fertilizer.

While this is a step in the right direction, the battle is half won, as the remaining 40% of fertilizer manufacturing capacity that is on the Mari network, is still on the subsidized price of PKR 580/mmbtu.

Pakistan’s current financial position is distressed, it is in a debt crisis, with the debt-to-GDP ratio already above 70 percent and more than USD 27 billion of foreign debt to be repaid by November 2024. The country cannot afford further fiscal pressures or half measures that do not go all the way in solving Pakistan’s problems. The dependence on government subsidies must end, for Pakistan to really move forward and break away from the vicious cycle of debt.

Therefore, in the national interest of the country and to fix the problem at the source, we urge the government to completely remove all subsidies from the fertilizer sector. Only with the complete removal can the government free the nation from this debt and truly benefit the people of Pakistan.

With this complete removal, the government is expected to collect PKR 150 billion, which can then be used for targeted agricultural projects and initiatives that generate economic activity and growth in the country.

This is a fantastic opportunity for all fertilizer manufacturers to demonstrate that even without subsidized gas they are globally competitive. In fact, when everyone has the same gas price, it will encourage the manufacturers to become more efficient, lean and encourage capital investment in the fertilizer industry.

In addition, the fertilizer industry will emerge as a role model that can operate efficiently without any subsidies, thereby encouraging the government to potentially look at removing subsidies from other sectors of the economy as well.

In conclusion, we fully support the government in taking this first step to partially remove the existing subsidy given to fertilizer manufacturers. We encourage the government to continue with this bold strategy and completely remove all subsidies so that it can reduce its debt burden, promote efficiency, attract new investments, and help build a stronger future for Pakistan.

Engro Fertilizers achieves record urea production in 2023 to ensure food security for Pakistan

Engro Fertilizers achieves record urea production in 2023 to ensure food security for Pakistan

Engro Fertilizers, Pakistan’s premier seed-to-harvest solutions provider, achieved record urea production of 2.3 million tons in 2023 to support the Government’s efforts of ensuring affordable and abundant supplies for the farmers.

The Company was able to achieve this feat and continued to play a pivotal role towards enabling the food security of Pakistan, amidst the headwinds of tough macroeconomic conditions, imposition of a higher super tax and gas price hikes. Engro Fertilizers was additionally affected by steep Rupee devaluation as its 950,000 tons Base Plant is supplied gas under Petroleum Policy 2012 pricing, which is dollar-pegged due to its linkage with crude oil rate.

According to the latest annual results, Engro Fertilizers urea production surged by 18.3 percent compared to the year 2022 (1.95 million tons) due to improved operational performance of both EnVen and Base Plants. Consequently, the Company’s urea sales witnessed an uptick by 20.3 percent to reach 2.32 million tons, while its market share also increased to 35 percent.

“The local fertilizer industry has ensured that farmers continue to benefit from lower domestic urea prices. The Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of urea stood at PKR 3,596/bag at year end, at a discount of 40 percent to international prices. This delta constitutes a contribution of approximately PKR 330 billion per annum towards farmer income in Pakistan,” said a Company statement. The industry is also engaging dealers to support Government’s initiatives to curb urea hoarding for market price manipulation, bolstering crop productivity, and farmer profitability.

In 2023, the robust domestic urea manufacturing industry enabled import substitution to the tune of USD 2.3 billion, including Engro Fertilizers’ share of USD 835 million. Further, in 2023, the Company contributed nearly PKR 34.7 billion towards the national exchequer by way of Government taxes, duties, and levies, compared to PKR 11.6 billion last year.

On a consolidated basis, Engro Fertilizers posted a profit after tax of PKR 26.2 billion with earnings per share (EPS) of PKR 19.61 in 2023, mainly on the back of increased production from long-term reliability projects, cost optimization, efficient working capital management and higher interest income.

To sustain domestic urea production levels and safeguard the food security of Pakistan, Engro Fertilizers and other major fertilizer manufacturers are investing heavily in Gas Pressure Enhancement Facilities (PEF) project. The expected share of Engro Fertilizers’ capital expenditure in this project is over USD 100 million.

SIFC to Offer Full Support to Foreign Investors, Says Masood Khan

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States has urged investors to seize the opportunities presented by Pakistan's growing economy, highlighting the country's investment-friendly policies. "With our economy on the rise, now is the time to expand your investments and benefit from the substantial returns offered by our growing economic environment," he stated. To streamline investment processes, Pakistan has established the Special Investment Facilitation Council, aimed at speeding up approvals, cutting through bureaucratic red tape, and offering comprehensive support to investors.

While the government has identified information technology, agriculture, energy, and the extractive industry as key investment sectors, the ambassador assured that foreign investors are welcome to explore other sectors and would receive the same incentives and benefits as those investing in priority areas. Ambassador Masood Khan made these remarks in a virtual discussion with leaders from the Pakistani-American communities in Greater Houston, Texas, and Atlanta, emphasizing the strategic advantages for U.S. investors. He pointed out the significant role of approximately one million Pakistani expatriates in the U.S. as vital connectors between the two nations, the success of around 80 U.S. companies currently operating in Pakistan, and the investment potential among Pakistani-American citizens.

The ambassador highlighted the Special Investment Facilitation Council's role in resolving past investor issues and encouraged the Pakistani-American business community to leverage this resource. He invited Pakistani-American investors, particularly those with successful ventures in hospitality, healthcare, diagnostics, and pharmaceuticals, to intensify their investments in Pakistan.

Furthermore, Ambassador Khan detailed efforts by the Pakistani Embassy and consulates to foster closer ties within the Pak-US business community and promote economic activity through unified commerce chambers and upcoming virtual and in-person investment seminars. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive database for better coordination with the Special Investment Facilitation Council and mentioned plans for enhancing bilateral cooperation in agriculture through university partnerships and sister-state agreements.

The ambassador concluded by acknowledging the significant contributions of the participants to fostering economic ties between Pakistan and the United States and welcomed their suggestions for improving business and investment relations.
