Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz positions itself as the country’s fastest mobile network – a fact which is undeniable given the two consecutive Ookla Speedtest awards it has received recently. As per the latest Ookla Speedtest score, Jazz received a score of 16.01 with average download speed of 17.13 Mbps, beating competition hands down.

With facts being what they are, it was quite naive of Telenor’s advertising team to come up with a campaign that blatantly spewed lies about being a fast mobile network. It was only a matter of time before Jazz took matters into their own hands and dissed the competition’s campaign with a cunning hoarding of their own.

The “Look Who’s Talking!” billboards by Jazz can be seen in various locations around Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad right next to every Telenor Hoarding, which says “Speed Par Aao”. A girl can be seen pointing towards the Telenor billboard, clearly belittling the competition.

Jokes apart, it is one thing to take a dig at a rival company publically but another to deceive the people. Telenor is clearly misleading customers into believing something which isn’t true with their latest campaign and Jazz’s response is something that’s not only humorous but also cheekily outsmarts its competitor with the truth.

Jazz’s unconcealed response and innovative advertising strategy is on point with these billboards. This move has been serving as a constant source of laughter for everyday commuters since it was put up.

Dasani Discovery Challenge competition - Plastic Waste Management Solutions Competition Winners Announced

Karachi, March 28, 2019: Dasani, the bottled water brand of The Coca-Cola Company announced the winners of the Dasani Discovery Challenge competition, which had sought solutions for plastic waste management, a growing societal concern. The competition was launched in November last year at the 021DISRUPT event of the incubator organization, The Nest I/O. Overall 73 entries were received, which were evaluated by a panel of 3 eminent judges, following which a shortlist of 12 entries was made. These shortlisted participants were then invited to make detailed presentations to the judges, based on which the final 3 winners were selected, all of whom happened to be from Karachi.

The first prize of half a million rupees was won by Umer Abid and team, who proposed using plastic waste as a road-building material, as is being done in several countries including Scotland, Dubai, India and Australia. The second prize of Rs. 300,000 went to Umer Farooq and team, who proposed manufacturing of building blocks, paver blocks, roof tiles, park benches, and other items using plastic waste. The winner of the third prize of Rs. 200,000 was Najm ul Hassan whose idea was to create an architectural solution by using PET bottles as building blocks. The closing ceremony of Dasani Discovery Challenge took place on the Lahore edition of Cokefest, where more than 40,000 people were present.

Speaking about this competition, Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager of Coca-Cola Pakistan said, “The idea of organizing this open competition originated from The Coca-Cola Company’s concern with the global crisis of plastic waste management. In this regard, the Company launched its product packaging policy, ‘World Without Waste’ on January 19, 2018, where the Company will lead the industry in a bold, ambitious goal to help bring back by 2030 a bottle or can for every one that it sells. The goal is to make recycling more accessible to achieve 100% collection and recycling by 2030, creating public awareness about what, how, and where to recycle, with continued focus on making our packaging 100% recyclable.”
One of the judges, Nazifa Butt of WWF-Pakistan stated that it was very encouraging to see the great interest shown in the competition by mostly young people from all over the country, which proves that the youth is quite aware of the growing threat to our future caused by plastic waste, and it is ready to try and come up with solutions to mitigate this threat. She further opined that other companies and brands should also come forward like Dasani to generate further public awareness and interest for this key issue.

Engro successfully synchronizes 330mw power plant on Thar coal

Engro successfully synchronizes 330mw power plant on Thar coal

Engro successfully synchronizes 330mw power plant on Thar coal

It was opening up of a new chapter in the history of Tharparkar when Engro Powergen Thar (Private) Limited (EPTL), fed electricity from its first unit into the national grid. It was realization of the nation’s dream of producing electricity from Thar coal. EPTL – the majority owned company of Engro Energy Limited, tested and energized the first unit of 330MW of the combined 660MW power plant located in TharBlock II. EPTL operates as a subsidiary of Engro Energy along with other sponsors that include Habib Bank; Liberty and China Machinery Engineering Corporation.

The successful synchronization happened amidst presence of senior officials of the Company and from China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) – the EPC contractor of the project. The injection of the electrons produced for the very first time from Thar coal – regarded as the 7th largest coal reserve in the world with 175 billion tons of lignite coal – has redefined Pakistan’s energy landscape and secured country’s energy future on an indigenous coal which will eventually free Pakistan from the dependence on foreign fuel mix. EPTL – one of the early harvest projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – commenced construction of Pakistan’s first 660MW power plant after the financial close of the project in April 2016.

The synchronization of the first unit of the power plant is a considerable achievement given that the project has been constructed in a record time of less than 3 years – as per schedule and projected costs, a feat in itself given the complexity of the project. EPTL power plant will annually consume 3.8 million tons coal supplied by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company as both projects achieve their commercial operations date (COD) in June 2019.

Together both the mining and power projects, managed by Engro Energy, will be able to bring average foreign exchange savings of up to US$1.6 billion per annum thereby delivering on Company’s promise of producing electricity which is from indigenous resources; is abundantly available and is economical.

The 660 MW power plant of EPTL will use circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology to burn coal. Post-COD, the plant will transmit 660MW of electricity through a 282-km long 500 kV Double Circuit Quad-Bundle transmission line from EPTL plant to Matiari in Sindh province. The power plant – although first for Pakistan to run on Thar coal – complies with all local environmental laws and has voluntarily adopted various international compliance standards also.

Celebrating this transformational event, the President of Engro Corporation, Ghias Khan said, “The first sync of the power plant on Thar coal is truly a momentous occasion for entire Pakistan. Engro’s commitment to the Thar coal project goes back almost a decade when we entered into a public private partnership in 2009. The synchronization of the first unit of the 660MW power plant is both testament to Engro’s capacity to engineer excellence and deliver on this project of national importance which will ensure the energy security of the county.

At this juncture, “I would like to thank the Government of Sindh and the Federal Government for their catalytic role and support in helping us deliver on our commitments of the Thar coal projects.” Commenting on the landmark achievement, Ahsan Zafar Syed – the Chief Executive Officer of Engro Energy and EPTL said, “This is a historic moment for us where Engro has not only delivered on its promise of realizing the Thar dream but technically demonstrated proof of the concept that Thar coal is suited to produce indigenous energy which can prove to be economical in the long run and reduce our dependence on imported fuel mix. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our partners and sponsors in the project who have played an instrumental role in this landmark achievement. I am confident that together with all our partners, Engro will forge ahead with synchronization of the second unit of the 660 MW power plant in April 2019 and Insha Allah achieve the COD of both the mining and the power project, as per our commitment, in June 2019.”

A 95-year-old Kiwi WWII veteran caught four buses to protest against racism

At Auckland's Aotea Square on Sunday, this 95-year-old veteran joined thousands of others to rally against racism.

Arm-in-arm with a police officer and a stranger, 95-year-old WWII veteran John Sato was determined to show his support for the Muslim community by protesting against racism at an Auckland rally.

The New Zealand Army veteran told Radio New Zealand he couldn't sleep the night of the Christchurch terror attacks, when a sole gunman killed fifty Muslims during afternoon prays at two different mosques.

Mr Sato admits he was living in a bubble; keeping to himself in the Auckland eastern suburb of Howick since losing his wife and daughter.

But when the news broke out of Christchurch, he was plunged into reality.

John Sato, a former Japaense serviceman, took two buses from Howick to join the march against racism in

"I thought it was so sad. You can feel the suffering of other people," he told the broadcaster.

"The Christchurch incident was more than just a tragedy for us."

Mr Sato said he was determined to show his support.

First he caught a bus to visit a mosque in Pakuranga, not too far from his house. After seeing so many flower and messages of support, he decided to press on - heading into the city centre to join a march against racism.

People gather to march against racism at Aotea Square.

After three more bus trips, he arrived to join thousands of Aucklanders rallying against hate.

When strangers saw him, they were quick to offer him a hand.

Karandaaz Pakistan Launches A Portal On Financial Services Indicators For Pakistan

Islamabad, 26 March, 2019: Karandaaz Pakistan has launched an online data portal with aggregated data on financial services and selected socioeconomic indicators for the country. The data is classified by segment—SME, Agriculture, Branchless Banking, Demographics—and also allows for detailed visualization by province, gender, age, etc., where available. Drawing on publicly available information from reputable sources, the breadth of information contained in the portal will expand over time with the addition of new data categories and metrics accompanied by continuous backend upgrades. The portal can be accessed at: https://karandaaz.com.pk/karandaazportal/.

Karandaaz is of the view the portal will be useful for a wide range of stakeholders including policy makers, financial service providers, researchers and academics. Ultimately, the success of the portal will be contingent on the level of utility that it can create for policy makers and industry proponents. Therefore, in addition to developing a one-stop aggregator tool, in future, Karandaaz aims to add the capability of layering datasets, to generate more nuanced learnings and insights.

Speaking about the initiative, Mehr Shah, Director Knowledge Management and Communications, Karandaaz Pakistan said,
“Developing the portal has involved extensive effort in design, optimization, data entry and collation. The effort was hinged on a delivery model that leverages a SAS platform for data visualization, negating the need for maintaining expensive in-house servers and computing hardware which substantially reduced project cost. The result is an easy-to-use platform which ensures access to data at the click of a button.”

Ali Sarfraz, CEO Karandaaz Pakistan said,
“At present, there are numerous data sources on the provision of and access to financial services in Pakistan. These data are collected and collated at significant cost by government agencies, industry associations and development agencies. Therefore, while the availability of rich data was identified by Karandaaz as a positive, the lack of a platform to aggregate these indicators and industry benchmarks to allow for time series analysis and cross-sector comparisons was a pressing knowledge gap. We hope that this data portal will give rise to similar initiatives in other sectors, giving momentum to the good practice of making data the center piece of our discussions, debates and conversations on financial inclusion in Pakistan.”

Karandaaz Pakistan promotes financial inclusion in the country through promoting access to finance for SMEs through commercially directed investments and financial inclusion for individuals through promotion of digital financial services. It also develops and disseminates evidence based insights, and encourages innovation in financial space. Karandaaz has financial and institutional support from DFID and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Awards for seven exceptional women - PPAF organises first ever National Women’s Jamboree

Islamabad, March 26, 2019: Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund invited community leaders from across Pakistan to celebrate the 8th Amtul Raqeeb Awards and for its first ever national Women’s Jamboree. The event highlighted female leaders from rural Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and FATA who, through resilience and determination and with exemplary effort and work, have provided for their households and communities. Provincial pavilions were set up for representatives from diverse backgrounds, such as donors, ambassadors, diplomats, government officials, academia, UN agencies, the corporate sector, and the media to interact with the awardees. Representatives also learned how PPAF financial and non-financial support provided through partner organizations has enabled the women to positively transform their lives and of others across the country.

This year, the Amtul Raqeeb Awards were presented to seven exceptional women for their extraordinary and courageous developmental work for their communities. This year, the award highlighted the work of champions including Bibi Sadqa (Killa Saifullah, Balochistan), Bibi Saleha (Lasbela, Balochistan), Shabana Gul (Upper Dir, KP), Faryad Khela, (Karak,KP), Shazia Shiekh (Thatta, Sindh), Janat Manzoor (Rajapur, Punjab), and Ruqia Bibi (Layyah, Punjab). While receiving the awards, the women shared heart-touching stories and talked about their gratitude for PPAF and its partner organizations for the enormous support.

The awardees belong to far-flung areas of the country. The selection criteria for this year’s event brought into focus women belonging to under-privileged districts of Pakistan where PPAF supports projects under the Government of Pakistan’s Interest-Free Loan Scheme, Programme for Poverty Reduction (PPR) funded by the Government of Italy, the Livelihood Support and Promotion of Small Community Infrastructure Programme (LACIP), and the Hydropower and Renewable Energy Programme funded by the KfW. All the participants of the Women’s Jamboree also underwent a training titled “Iradah,” which engaged participants in activities exploring and strengthening their leadership traits to add further value to the role they play in the socio-economic development of their communities.

Mr. Qazi Azmat Isa, CEO PPAF said, PPAF is committed to supporting and celebrating women, particularly with Amtul Raqeeb Awards and now our first ever national Women’s Jamboree. Through our various programmes, we have highlighted the work of various female leaders from rural Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and FATA. Their resilience in the face of odds shows the strength of the women of our nation.

“Women must be encouraged and supported first and foremost by us men, to participate fully in the civic, economic and political mainstream. It is only through this whole hearted partnership that Pakistan can be transformed into the nation that it needs to become”, he further added.

Samia Liaquat Ali Khan, Senior Group Head, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund elucidated on PPAF’s work in strengthening women’s voices: “PPAF is celebrating 20 years of action. The challenge that we took up was of ensuring that women are equal partners, actors, activists, participants and beneficiaries within all our programmes. Today we have gathered together 55 past and current winners of the Amtul Raqeeb Awards alongside other courageous women who have made an impact within their communities and contributed to the progress of the country.” Women’s share/benefit within PPAF micro finance, institutional development, health and education, community infrastructure and livelihoods interventions is mandated at 40% but is much higher.

One of the winners, Faryad Khela from KPK, spoke on-stage about the difficulties she experienced in her battle for female involvement in community development projects. Other than facing misogyny and unhelpful government officials, her husband threatened her with divorce if she did not halt her welfare work, “I thought: I had to be strong if I wanted other women to be strong to. I reached out, recruited, and encouraged other women to come out and join the fight for their rights.”

Bibi Sadqa from Killa Saifullah, Balochistan spoke about her work to tackle illiteracy and rigid social structures in society: “I promised myself that I had to teach the children in the village, I had to make my country proud. I began teaching my brother’s children. I had about seven or eight children to teach then, now I have fifty. Inshallah, by 2030, I will make sure every girl has completed her matric education- I promise this to you.”

Awards were also presented to winners of the poster and the short film competition that PPAF organized for university students of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. Madiha Khalid from NUST won the poster competition while Noor Alvi from NUST was declared runner-up. Momal Ali from Fatima Jinnah Women University won the short film competition and Alia Fatima from NUST was presented the runner up award.

PPAF organizes the ‘Amtul Raqeeb Awards’ every year on International Women’s Day in the memory of Amtul Raqeeb, the PPAF social mobilizer who was killed by terrorists in 2011 on her way back from healthcare center in Mastung, Balochistan. The award pays tribute to the courageous Ms. Raqeeb and encourages female change-makers living in rural areas to work toward socio-economic development of their communities. Amtul Raqeeb’s immense contribution in capacity building of local traditional birth attendants has resulted in a significant reduction of mother child mortality rate in the inaccessible region of Pakistan.

Each year PPAF invites nominations from its partner organizations for women from deprived regions of Pakistan that are performing extraordinary feats in areas including primary healthcare, girls’ education, livelihood and entrepreneurship, water, energy, infrastructure, climate change, environment, and disaster preparedness. The selection is made on the basis of their contributions as female entrepreneurs, social activists, and innovative champions to bring positive change at the household and community levels. PPAF held the first Amtul Raqeeb Award ceremony in 2012. 40 women and two men have been conferred with Amtul Raqeeb awards in the last seven years.

The event was attended by Ms. Khawar Mumtaz, Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women, H.E Professor Julius Bitok, the Ambassador of Kenya, H.E Mohamed Karmoune, the Ambassador of Morocco, H.E Ali Alizadeh, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan, and Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Beg, the Senior Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI).
