LG Unveils More Advanced K10 and K8 Series Smartphones at MWC

New Devices Close Gap Between LG’s Price-Friendly Mass-Tier Devices and Flagships

Karachi: LG Electronics (LG) unveiled the 2018 edition of its popular K8 and K10 mass-tier smartphones at MWC 2018, enhanced with even more premium features rival-ing those of premium flagships. Both models will roll out globally in key regions such as Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

With a host of advanced camera features such as high speed auto focus and noise reduction for better low-light photography, the K Series continues to deliver exceptional products to customers at exceptional prices. Both the K8 and K10 carry over the handsome glossy pebble identity that has been a key element of the K Series’ identity, complemented by its 2.5D Arc Glass design for a mod-ern, seamless look that ages well with time. Both phones will be available in three new, striking colors for 2018: Astro Black, Moroccan Blue, and Terra Gold.

The classy metallic design of the LG K10 with its metal U-frame not only looks sleek, but it is also packed with premium features not normally found in its price range. The K10 is equipped with the advanced 13MP rear camera technology found in the flagship LG G6 and a high resolution 8MP front camera that supports Bokeh when shooting selfies. With the K10, shutterbugs won’t miss any great photo opportunities with Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) which is 23 percent faster than traditional auto focus. And the new Smart Rear Key not only unlocks the phone with a fingerprint, it also triggers Quick Shutter for faster photos and Quick Capture for easy screen shots.

The updated LG K8 delivers more advanced camera UX features for 2018 and low-light photog-raphy has been improved from the previous generation K8 with even brighter, clearer images. Fa-vorite features such as Auto Shot, Gesture Shot, Flash for Selfie and Quick Share are carried over to the new K8 by popular demand.

Clearer photographs in dim environments is made possible in both the K8 and K10 with the new Low Light Noise Reduction feature. Combined with High Dynamic Range (HDR), photos come out sharper with more luminosity and contrast levels.

Taking group photos with friends or family is easier than ever thanks to the new Timer Helper fea-ture. No longer is it necessary to guess how many seconds until the timer triggers the shutter. With Timer Helper, the K8 and K10 will help keep count using the flash as a visual aid so friends and family can be in the exact position at the right time.

Another new feature of the K Series camera is Flash Jump Cut, which snaps a photo every three se-conds (up to 20 photos) and stitches the images together into a fun GIF for easy sharing. Flash Jump Cut is available on both the K8 and K10 and can be used with either the front or rear cameras.

“LG’s 2018 K Series range of smartphones is focused on delivering even more value to consumers looking for the right device that fits their lifestyle and needs,” said Ha Jeung-uk, senior vice presi-dent and business unit leader for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We’re confi-dent we can capture the hearts and minds of consumers in the fast-moving market with our smartphone camera technology and other convenient features.”

Facebook Introduces New Feature in Pakistan to Help Increase Blood Donations

Karachi (27 February 2018) - Today, Facebook is launching a blood donations feature in Pakistan to make it easier for people to sign up to be blood donors, and to help connect donors with people and organizations in need. Pakistan, like many countries, has a shortage of safe blood. In some cases, this shortage means patients and their families are responsible for finding donors to replace the blood they receive from blood banks or hospitals. This can cause high-stress situations as people try to find blood donors on their own. Many people are reaching out to their networks on Facebook. There are thousands of posts each month in Pakistan seeking blood donors on Facebook, and over 100,000 people in blood donation groups.

This is where Facebook can help, by finding ways to more efficiently bring blood donors, people and organizations together. We have worked together with nonprofit organizations, health industry experts, potential donors and people who have used Facebook to find blood donors to ensure that this feature was designed to be useful to people. We recently launched a similar tool in India and Bangladesh, where nearly 7 million people have signed up to be blood donors on Facebook.

Making It Easier to Become a Blood Donor
Starting today, people using Facebook in Pakistan will be able to sign up to be blood donors either on their profiles or by visiting facebook.com/donateblood. All information will remain private and set to Only Me by default, but people can choose to share their donor status more widely. This feature will be available on Android, iOS and desktop.

Connecting People and Organizations with Blood Donors
We're also make it easier for people and organizations, such as blood banks and hospitals, to connect with blood donors on Facebook.

When people are seeking donations, they will be able to create special posts to spread the word or go to facebook.com/findblooddonors. Facebook will automatically notify blood donors who may be nearby to help. Donors can then review the request and, if they wish to respond, contact the requester directly through a phone call. The requester won’t be able to see any information about the donor, unless the donor explicitly provides it when he or she replies.

When organizations are hosting a blood camp event in Pakistan, they will be able to create an event on Facebook and nearby blood donors will be automatically notified. Donors can review the event and indicate if they're going or interested.

Hema Budaraju, Head of Product, Health at Facebook: "We hope that by increasing awareness and providing tools for people and organizations in need to connect with those who are willing to help, we can make it easier for people to donate blood."

Prof. Hasan Abbas Zaheer, National Coordinator, Safe Blood Transfusion Programme, Ministry of National Health Services, Government of Pakistan:
“Safe Blood Transfusion Programme is proud to work with Facebook. We believe Facebook's Blood Donation feature will help us address a key programmatic challenge for us, that is reaching a younger population of potential donors. We are confident that now this gap will soon become history.”

Dr Saeed Elahi, Chairman, Pakistan Red Crescent Society:
“Safe blood saves lives and improves health. For 70 years, the Pakistan Red Crescent has worked to prevent and alleviate human suffering. We believe Facebook's Blood Donation feature will make it easier for people in need to find donors and increase blood donations overall. Thousands of people seek blood donations every month in Pakistan and today the Facebook Blood Donation tool will help raise awareness of and the importance of reliable access to safe blood in Pakistan.”

People in Pakistan can go to facebook.com/donateblood to learn more and sign up to be a blood donor. For organizations interested in using the blood donations feature, contact us here.

Syria is burning -  'Survive or die together': More than 400 killed in Eastern Ghouta

Syrian government aerial offensive on rebel-held enclave that began on Sunday has killed at least 403 people.

More than 400 people have been killed in Eastern Ghouta, a monitoring group said, as Syrian government forces backed by Russian warplanes continued their aerial bombardment of the rebel-held area.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday that at least 403 people were killed in the "hysterical attack" that began on Sunday, including 150 children. Almost 2,120 others were wounded.

UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in comments made before Thursday's UN Security Council meeting.

"The humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta is appalling and, therefore, we need a ceasefire that stops both the horrific heavy bombardment of Eastern Ghouta and the indiscriminate mortar shelling on Damascus," he said.

He added the ceasefire needs to be followed by immediate, unhindered humanitarian access and a facilitated evacuation of wounded people out of Eastern Ghouta and warned against this being a repeat of Aleppo.

Living under bombardment
Residents of Eastern Ghouta, the majority of whom are internally displaced, say there is nothing they can do and nowhere to hide.

Rafat al-Abram lives in Douma and is a car mechanic. The air attacks over the last few days have disrupted his job as the street he works on was destroyed by two raids.

"I managed to get some of my tools and equipment out, and fix cars whenever I can," he told Al Jazeera.

"Sometimes I also fix the ambulances of the civil defence, which break down often because of their constant use."

His wife and two teenage daughters, Khadija, 17, and Ola, 15, remain at home. They start their day by sitting together before al-Abram visits his neighbours to get the latest grim news.

"Sometimes a bombing takes place near where I am working, which means I have to stop and hurry to help the civil defence pull victims from the rubble," he said.

After al-Abram returns home, he says he is haunted by the unbearable scenes he witnessed during the day.

"Seeing a father or mother wailing and crying over their dead children, or a father carrying his son who has one leg amputated, or another screaming at God and then at people to help save his family who are all lying under the rubble of a building … I try to comfort them even though I want to sit and cry with them from the horror of what is happening all around us," he said.

'Survive or die together'
Rebel-controlled Eastern Ghouta, a mostly rural area on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, has been under government siege since 2013. About 400,000 Syrians live there. The siege has resulted in huge inflation of the cost of basic foodstuffs, a bag of bread now costs the equivalent of $5.

Malnutrition rates have reached unprecedented levels, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, with 11.9 percent of children under the age of five acutely malnourished.

Only one aid convoy was permitted inside the area in February, to the town of Nashabieh, but none were allowed in January and December.

Nisma al-Hatri told Al Jazeera her husband and 10-year-old daughter Sara wake up to the sound of warplanes.

"Every day goes like this: bombings, then I clean the house from the effect of the nearby shelling, then we hide in one room, attempting to survive or die together," Hatri said.

"My daughter Sara and I wake up with our arms around each other from the night before," al-Hatmi continued. "We all sleep on one mattress. She hugs me and asks me why she can't go out to play, or to school or to see her friends. I cannot answer her."

The 32-year-old used to be a teacher, but schools were shut down a month ago because the situation grew too dangerous to go outside. Nevertheless, Hatmi still gives lessons to Sara and other neighbourhood children on an almost daily basis.

Her husband goes out every morning for several hours and returns with barley, which Hatmi cooks with rice for their breakfast and dinner. Some days her husband returns empty-handed.

'War against civilians'
Mahmood Adam, a member of the Syrian Civil Defence, described to Al Jazeera the reality of Eastern Ghouta as "disastrous".

Civil defence help a man from a shelter in the besieged town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta [Bassam Khabieh/Reuters]
"We are talking about a systematic targeting of civilians in their homes, schools, medical centres, marketplaces, and civil defence sites," he said. "This is an extermination of the society in this area."

"There are families who have been hiding in basements and underground shelters who haven't seen the sun in days for fear of the brutality of the regime and the Russian warplanes," he continued.

"We don't know whether we will be alive to tell the world what is happening in the next hour or day. The rocket launchers are relentless, and the warplanes have not left the skies of Eastern Ghouta since Sunday.

"Everyone here knows this is a slaughter and a crime against humanity," he added. "This is a war against civilians."

Targeting medical centres
Speaking from the Turkish border city of Gaziantep, Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid said doctors in Eastern Ghouta are saying the circumstances are "beyond words".

"What they see is body after body arriving in makeshift clinics," Bin Javaid said. "[They are] trying to give medical aid to the people who are in their hundreds being wounded in a relentless barrage of rockets, shells, and air raids.

"They are running out of medical assistance and places to put these people because at least 22 facilities, according to the Syrian American Medical Society, have been targeted since Sunday," he said.

Ahmed al-Masri, spokesman for the Union of Free Syrian Doctors, told Al Jazeera that government forces are attempting to destroy "every aspect of civilian life".

"The regime's forces are using the most ferocious means of bombardment," he said. "As a result, many of the hospitals and medical facilities in Eastern Ghouta were directly hit and destroyed.

"Three of our medical centres were shelled and destroyed, and one of our crews was killed and three others wounded."

No consensus on ceasefire
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council failed to reach an agreement on a resolution put forward by Sweden and Kuwait that called for a 30-day cessation of hostilities to allow aid delivery and the evacuation of civilians from besieged Eastern Ghouta.

Russian UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzya said there was "no agreement" and presented amendments to the draft resolution "for it to be realistic". He also accused the Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, of being "closely affiliated with terrorist groups".

The Syrian ambassador to the UN, Basher al-Jaafari, accused the UN and mainstream media of backing "terrorists recruited by the US from all over the world" to fight in Syria.

Al Jazeera's diplomatic correspondent James Bays said Jaafari's comments were typical of a man who has "stoutly defended his government and whatever it does".

"He is representing a government that is breaching international law - effectively many would say carrying out war crimes," Bays said, speaking from the UN headquarters in New York.

"He's very much supported diplomatically by Russia. They helped the Syrian government turn the tide of the war in the last two years, and they are now helping do whatever it takes to win the war."
