PM Shehbaz Orders Fast-Track Modernization of Pakistan Railways

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed Pakistan Railways to fast-track its modernization drive by engaging international-level legal and economic experts for projects aimed at boosting regional connectivity.

During a high-level meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that a modern rail network is vital for strengthening Pakistan’s economy and transport system. Officials briefed him that Pakistan Railways is expanding its digital infrastructure, with seven portals under the Rabta initiative now fully operational, 56 trains integrated into the system, and 54 stations digitized. Major stations in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad already offer free Wi-Fi, with 48 more stations set to receive the service by December.

The department has also launched an online freight booking system and introduced a pilot digital weighing bridge at Karachi City Railway Station, with plans to expand to Pipri, Karachi Cantonment, Port Qasim, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. At Rawalpindi Station, 148 AI-powered surveillance cameras have been installed to enhance security, while ATM machines, outsourced cleaning services, and upgraded waiting areas are being added to improve passenger convenience.
